Mental load includes the invisible cognitive effort that goes into even the smallest tasks—and it's constant.MOVE Like ThisWith Bonnie Buol RuszcykFor CPA TrendlinesIn the latest episode of MOVE Like This, Tricia Bencich, Inclusion and Social Responsibility Associate Director at Moss Adams, returns to the show to tackle a topic that resonated deeply with attendees of the 2024 MOVE Mini Summit: mental load. With more than 1,000 attendees at her session alone, it's clear that the idea of “invisible labor” is striking a chord, especially with women in the workplace.More MOVEMental load, Bencich explains, isn't just about the physical tasks we perform but the cognitive effort involved in managing them. It's not driving to the soccer game; it's remembering the cleats, checking the weather, packing snacks, ensuring the uniforms are clean, and being an emotionally available parent – all before the car leaves the driveway. It's this invisible, persistent, often unnoticed thinking and planning that women disproportionately carry. And, as she emphasizes, “Mental load affects everyone, but research shows women continue to shoulder more of it, even if their partners work less or not at all.”

Application programming interfaces (APIs) are taking over the internet. APIs now make up 83% of internet traffic because they help applications communicate with each other via API calls. And they're a critical threat vector for companies. Corey Ball, author of “Hacking APIs,” saw the API takeover happening and realized there was a gap in security training and tactics. He founded APIsec University, which offers online courses to help level up the infosec community's API security testing skills. APIs are essentially direct links to a company's database, a valuable target for a malicious actor, and their flaws can be difficult to detect without proper documentation and thorough analysis. Security teams are just getting started tackling API security and Corey outlines how they can get started and which executives, including the board of directors, need to be aware of their API attack surface. ----------Listen to learn more about: * His favorite API vulnerability * Why generic security scanners can't detect API security flaws * The future of API security

Multi-Unit Month is back, and that means four brand-new podcast episodes dedicated to multi-unit franchising. Join us every Friday in May, when we'll be speaking to many franchising experts and insiders – as well as multi-unit and multi-brand operators themselves – to learn why this form of franchise ownership is skyrocketing in popularity. According to FRANdata, over half of all franchise units in the U.S. are controlled by multi-unit operators. There are more than 43,000 of these kinds of operators in the market, and this figure has been rising steadily since multi-unit ownership came to the forefront in the 1980s. And while we'd commonly associate a broad, multi-unit portfolio with the QSR segment, the fact is that multi-unit and multi-brand ownership can be found across the board. It's true that 81.96 per cent of QSR units fall under multi-unit ownership, but 71.5 per cent of beauty-focused brands also come under this umbrella. Just over half of all clothing and accessory locations are part of a multi-unit portfolio, too. To learn more about multi-unit franchising and the strategies involved, we spoke with Matthew Haller, president and CEO of the IFA, Bill Edwards, founder of Edwards Global Services, and Michael Cullom, director at Moss Adams. If you're looking to broaden your own franchise portfolio or embark upon expansive growth for the first time, then tune in to learn from the experts. [3:28] One of the outcomes of our work is empathy. [3:53] I come from the world of digital marketing with a experience of 20 years as a marketing leader. [4:06] The other thing that I talk about a lot, and what is at the center of my business is skill building that we can all use to be more effective and more aware. [7:22] We can create that kindness for ourselves by taking care and managing ourselves. [8:08] How do we get to the place where we can pause and move on to do something that's more effective. [13:05] We need to identify the planning that we can do around the pauses so as to be able to have some more flow in that versus this kind of jerky stop-start. [14:55] Commercial break. [18:06] One of the biggest things I have learnt is managing my expectations, and even being aware of them. [21:27] Coming from the world of being a marketer working with many parts of organizations, as well as having lots of resources, managing my expectations aided me when I became my own entrepreneur. [22:08] I called myself a recovering perfectionist because I really had to reset my expectations and embrace some of the challenge. [23:15] To help my clients, I use some data such as assessments that have been used studying human behavior for hundreds of years. [25:55] Because we start with behavior, it makes it easy to get comfortable with some of the vulnerability of looking inward. [26:25] It's never about getting in and poking holes or jabbing, but rather about holding up the mirror and observing with tiny bits of tenderness. [28:00] Judging ourselves into behavior change never really works. [28:42] Be kind to yourself by starting with little baby steps and it will build overtime. HHe's the King of the Analogy, the Master of the Metaphor, and one of the most respected (and humorous) professionals in financial services. Philip Palaveev is the CEO of the The Ensemble Practice, a consulting firm he founded and leads in Seattle which focuses on making successful business owners out of successful advisors. With his analogies and metaphors, Philip has a way of illustrating a point better than anyone I've ever worked with in this industry. But it's his knowledge of the advisor business that makes him one of the most sought-after coaches for advisors and institutions catering to financial advisors. What's the secret sauce? It's the great perspective Philip has accumulated as a principal at Moss Adams, then as a leader of a very large advisory practice, and now as a successful business owner. That makes him a rare but valuable resource to any advisor who truly wants to improve his or her business. Philip speaks with me about the advantages of a group practice, how the next generation investor's needs are not too dissimilar from those of today's client, and his 3 keys to becoming a superior business owner. The pandemic put unprecedented pressures on the healthcare industry. Few countries were prepared for the crisis, which not only exposed the inefficiencies within the healthcare industry, but also led to many unnecessary deaths. She has since expanded her reach to help companies create thriving cultures at every level, from college intern to CEO. When every team member works from a leadership mindset, performance increases, drama decreases, and culture becomes a competitive advantage. As a speaker, trainer and coach, Gina has successfully taught both the mindset of leadership and the skillset. Known for her ability to connect with audiences at every level, Gina has inspired audiences nationwide, from Moss Adams on the West Coast to Deutsche Bank on Wall Street. For the better part of ten years, Gina also served as a sought-after adjunct faculty member in the graduate counseling program at the University of San Diego, where she earned a master's degree in counseling with an emphasis in career development. Gina credits her parents for putting her to work, starting at age ten, in the family pizza business. Growing up in an entrepreneurial family taught Gina how to see company culture through the dual lens of employer and employee. Episode 020: Jill Dymtrow on B-Notices (with a shocking revelation) B-Notices from the IRS was the topic on this episode of the AP Now podcast. Mary Schaeffer was joined by industry expert, Jill Dymtrow for a fun discussion of these little-understood, but quite-important IRS notices. She also dropped a bombshell in the middle of the podcast. Jill, who is a director with the accounting firm of Moss Adams, has been working in tax information reporting since, as she explains, “the turn of the century.” The podcast starts with an explanation of exactly what a B-Notice is and why they can be so deadly for organizations. She then clarifies the difference between a B-Notice and Penalty Notices as well as the origin of the term B Notice. At this point, she dropped the bombshell. She shared that she has seen several B-Notices that had mismatches on them from 1042s. This is the first time that news had been shared. Most professionals do not expect this. She also warned that this is likely to expand in the future. She then emphasized the importance of using IRS TIN Matching. The podcast continued with Jill discussing common issues she finds with companies that receive B-Notices, especially at the middle-market level. Before offering closing remarks and best practices, to demonstrate the vagaries in tax reporting, she shared a story about one of her clients who finally followed her advice. The outcome was not what she expected. Over the years, and certainly recently there has been a lot of focus on the Department of Labor and their role in overseeing workplace retirement plans. What some might not realize or fully appreciate is the role if the Internal Revenue Service, better known as the IRS in overseeing retirement plans. To help employers get their arms around things I was excited to have Susan Mehlman, a Director in the National Tax Group and the Compensation and Benefits Practice Leader at Moss Adams join me on the podcast! During our conversation we highlight the different focusses of the IRS and the DOL in policing workplace retirement plans, how employers end up in the crosshairs of the IRS and some tips and strategies to help minimize the risk of an IRS audit or investigation. This week also marks a first on the podcast as we also re-released one of our very first podcast episodes which focussed on the role of the DOL. I thought this might make a natural follow-up from my conversation with Susan. While that episode was recorded early in 2016, the content is just as relevant today as it was last year. As an added bonus, don’t miss the last twelve minutes of the podcast where we do have a fresh update on what to expect from the DOL now that we have a new Secretary of Labor, the status of the Fiduciary Rule and other helpful information for employers who sponsor workplace retirement plans! Once you finish this episode on the IRS, be sure to check out the one on the DOL! Guest Bio Susan leads the Compensation and Benefits Practice for Moss Adams and has provided qualified and nonqualified plan design and consulting services since 1987. She delivers a wide range of tax solutions, including health and welfare plan tax consulting, to both public and privately held businesses. Susan has managed services to plans of all sizes from newly formed, small, single-employer plans to large employer plans with over 70,000 participants and assets in excess of $2 billion. She works directly with clients on tax compliance issues including responding to IRS and DOL audit inquiries and coordinates closely with various industry groups and employee benefit plan auditors within the firm. Her responsibilities include managing the client relationship through all aspects of plan design and implementation, assisting plan sponsors in setting objectives, and monitoring the success of these strategies. 401(k) Fridays Podcast Overview Struggling with a fiduciary issue, looking for strategies to improve employee retirement outcomes or curious about the impact of current events on your retirement plan? This is the second episode of today's double header. If you haven't listened to my conversation with Susan Mehlman at Moss Adams about the IRS and your 401(k) Plan, be sure to check that out as well. This episode is an updated version of one of the very first episodes on the podcast. This features my conversation with Sam Henson, an ERISA Attorney and the VP & Director of Legislative & Regulatory Affairs at Lockton Retirement Services. The first portion is our original conversation from back in early 2016 and the last 12 minutes or so features our more recent conversation providing a few updates based on the DOL during the Trump Administration and the new Secretary of Labor. Our conversation is full of great information about how the DOL operates, how DOL investigations are triggered and important steps you should take if you receive a letter notifying you of a DOL investigation. Guest Bio Sam Henson is the Vice President and Director of Legislative & Regulatory Affairs for Lockton Retirement Services. Sam also brings a unique perspective to our discussion today as prior to joining Lockton, he spent almost 10 years with the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA), where he conducted more than 150 civil and criminal investigations of employee retirement and benefits plans, service providers, and fiduciaries. He capped off his career at the DOL as the 2011 recipient of the Secretary of Labor’s Exceptional Achievement Award. Needless to say, we are glad we have Sam on our side now and he is not out there banging down the doors of employers any more! 401(k) Fridays Podcast Overview Struggling with a fiduciary issue, looking for strategies to improve employee retirement outcomes or curious about the impact of current events on your retirement plan?
