Three news stories summarized & contextualized by analytic journalist Colin Wright.New FDA-approved drug makes severe food allergies less life-threateningSummary: A new antibody drug called omalizumab, which lessens the severe allergic reactions people have to some foods, has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.Context: Over the course of several injections, this drug has been shown to help patients tolerate increasing volumes of whatever it is they're allergic to, including things like nuts, milk, eggs, and wheat; about 17% of people who received the drug in clinical tests didn't experience any benefits, so this isn't a universal, panacea solution, but it did allow the majority of subjects in most trials to tolerate, for instance, the equivalent of several peanuts, despite being deathly allergic to peanuts, reducing their severe allergic responses down to minor versions of the same; this is one of many drugs that was originally approved to treat other things, in this case asthma, hives, and nasal polyps, but which has now been successfully repurposed for other utilities.—Ars TechnicaOne Sentence News is a reader-supported publication. On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Feb. 20 at 7:15 a.m. CT: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Another wet winter storm is swamping California with heavy rainfall, flooding the runways at a regional airport and leading to several rescues on swollen rivers and creeks. The Santa Barbara airport closed Monday after nearly 10 inches of rain had fallen in the area by noon. In neighboring San Luis Obispo County, crews helped three people out of the rising Salinas River in the city of Paso Robles. Forecasters say more rain is expected to impact the state through the night and into Tuesday. The storm is expected to move through quicker than the devastating atmospheric river that parked itself over Southern California earlier this month, causing hundreds of landslides and killing at least nine people. The Kremlin says President Vladimir Putin did not see the video in which Alexei Navalny’s widow vowed to continue his fight and dismissed her allegations that Putin had killed the country’s opposition leader as “unfounded” and “insolent.” In the video released Monday, Yulia Navalnaya accused Putin of killing her husband in the remote Artic prison and alleged that officials’ refusal to hand over his body to his mother was part of a cover-up. Russian authorities say the cause of Navalny’s death is still unknown and the results of any investigation are likely to be questioned abroad. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell called for an international investigation into Navalny’s death but Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the Kremlin would not accept any such demand. THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — South Africa has argued at the United Nations’ top court that Israel is responsible for apartheid against the Palestinians and that Israel’s occupation of land sought for a Palestinian state is “inherently and fundamentally illegal.” Israel rejects such claims. The South African representatives were speaking on Tuesday — the second day of hearings at the International Court of Justice, based on a request by the General Assembly for a non-binding advisory opinion on the legality of Israel’s policies in the occupied territories. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement on Monday that Israel does not recognize the legitimacy of the discussions at the world court. Court records show that a man who died after fatally shooting two police officers and a firefighter in a wooded suburban-Minneapolis neighborhood wasn’t legally allowed to have guns. He also was entangled in a yearslong dispute over the custody and financial support of his three oldest children. Authorities on Monday identified 38-year-old Shannon Gooden as the man who opened fire on police in the affluent suburb of Burnsville after they responded to a domestic disturbance call early Sunday. The caller reported that he had barricaded himself in his home with family members, including seven children aged 2 to 15 years. He was found dead inside the home hours later. Home Depot’s sales continued to weaken in its fiscal fourth quarter, as the country’s largest home improvement retailer deals with Americans who remain concerned about high mortgage rates and inflation. While its quarterly results topped analysts’ expectations, it provided a soft sales forecast for fiscal 2024. Shares slipped before the market open on Tuesday. PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — A judge in Haiti responsible for investigating the July 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse has indicted his widow, Martine Moïse, ex-prime minister Claude Joseph and the former chief of Haiti’s National Police, Léon Charles. The indictments are expected to further destabilize Haiti as it struggles with a surge in gang violence and recovers from a spate of violent protests demanding the resignation of current Prime Minister Ariel Henry. Dozens of suspects were indicted in the 122-page report issued by Walther Wesser Voltaire, who is the fifth judge to lead the investigation after previous ones stepped down for various reasons, including fear of being killed. OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — The Canadian government will dispatch more than 800 drones to Ukraine starting as early as this spring. The Department of National Defence says that drones have become a critical capability for Ukraine in its war with Russia. The government says the drones are important for surveillance and intelligence gathering, and can also be used to move supplies, including munitions. The announcement comes days ahead of the two-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Nikki Haley is using the closing days of the South Carolina GOP primary matchup with Donald Trump to hone her argument that she is the lone remaining candidate who can unite Americans. It’s a tall order for Haley as her home state prepares to vote on Saturday. Trump has remained popular in South Carolina since his 2016 primary win in the state. Haley has maintained that her ability to stick it out in the race thus far means that she’s in it for the long haul. In a new TV ad, Haley argues she's the only choice who can keep America on solid footing abroad. Republicans have been softening their stance on Russia ever since Donald Trump won the 2016 presidential election following Russian hacking of his Democratic opponents. There are several reasons for the shift. For one, Russian President Vladimir Putin is holding himself out as an international champion of conservative Christian values. As well, the GOP is growing increasingly skeptical of international entanglements. Then there's Trump’s own embrace of the Russian leader. Now the GOP’s ambivalence on Russia has stalled additional aid to Ukraine. Many Republicans are openly frustrated that their colleagues don’t see the benefits of helping Ukraine. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration says that the government would provide $1.5 billion to the computer chip company GlobalFoundries to expand its domestic production in New York and Vermont. The announcement is the third award of financial support for a semiconductor company under the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act. The law enables the government to invest more than $52 billion to revitalize the manufacturing of computer chips in the United States as well as advance research and development. GlobalFoundries intends to use the funding to help pay for the construction of a new advanced chip factory in Malta, New York, increase production at its existing plant in Malta, and revitalize its plant in Burlington, Vermont. NEW YORK (AP) — Capital One Financial is buying Discover Financial Services for $35 billion, in a deal that would bring together two of the nation’s biggest lenders and credit card issuers. Discover Financial shareholders will receive Capital One shares valued at nearly $140, according to a news release issued by the companies Monday. Discover shares closed Friday trading at $110.49. Virginia-based Capital One was the 12th largest U.S. bank as of the third quarter. Illinois-based Discover was the 33rd biggest. Both banks have benefitted from Americans increasingly using their credit cards, but have also needed to set aside more money to guard against defaults. NEW YORK (AP) — For many students, the excitement of being accepted into their first-choice college is being tempered this year by a troublesome uncertainty over whether they’ll get the financial aid they need to attend. The financial aid decisions that usually go out with acceptance letters are being delayed because of a later-than-expected rollout of a revised federal financial aid application, the form that schools use to compute financial aid. Schools won’t get the information they need to award financial aid until next month, forcing them to adapt. Some have moved away from the popular May 1 deadline for students to accept their offers of admission. COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Missouri's Republican-led House has passed a ban on celebratory gunfire in cities less than a week after a deadly shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs' Super Bowl parade. The bipartisan-supported bill passed Monday after a tearful and confrontational debate between Republicans and Democrats over the best way to address last week's shooting. House Democrats earlier that day called for more regulations on guns. Majority Leader Jon Patterson says House Republicans support gun rights. But he says Republicans should be open to talking, including about gun laws. Police have said a dispute may have led to last week's shooting. Authorities have not made any indication that the gunfire was celebratory. In sports, the rain-delayed Daytona 500 crowns William Byron, the Nets make a coaching change, the Wild and Canucks combine for 17 goals and a battle of top 10 teams meet in college basketball. In international news, Israel orders new evacuations in Northern Gaza, UN Security council to vote on Gaza ceasefire, Haiti judge indicts several on assassination of President, Russia waits for global support for Ukraine to wither and tribal violence in Papua New Guinea. —The Associated Press About this program Host Terry Lipshetz is managing editor of the national newsroom for Lee Enterprises. This week we have a special holiday episode of the On Brand podcast with the “Naughty and Nice Brands of 2022.” This seasonally appropriate snapshot of brand behavior was developed by the smart folks at Brand Federation. The consultancy's Chief Growth Officer Matt Williams joined me to discuss which brands have been naughty and nice this year. About Matt Williams Matt Williams is Chief Growth Officer for Brand Federation, a brand strategy consultancy in Richmond, Virginia. Prior to joining Brand Federation in 2019, Williams was CEO of the Martin Agency, one of the world's most recognized advertising agencies, where he managed strategy development for world-class brands like GEICO, OREO, UPS, Discover Financial, Walmart, and more. Williams also is a Clinical Professor in the marketing department at the Mason School of Business at William & Mary. He teaches in the MBA program and is the developer and Faculty Director of the school's Online Masters in Marketing. The Naughty List 2022 was the year of billionaires behaving badly. Here are a few of the ones we talked about. Twitter, Elon Musk—The world's richest man, Elon Musk, created a $44 billion cash bonfire by buying and systematically destroying Twitter. “The ‘Chief Twit,'” as Williams called Musk, “deserves a boulder size lump of coal.” FTX, Sam Bankman-Fried—Good virtual eye contact; work to bring your hands up and into gestures to reinforce key points. Brands built on false promises don't stand long. Matt and I further discussed what this meant for “the brand of crypto.” Theranos, Elizabeth Holmes—Holmes, a self-made billionaire who served as CEO of Theranos, built the company into a promising brand—on a foundation of lies. It collapsed because of dishonesty, lack of transparency, and overall bad behavior at the top, and it earned Holmes an 11-year prison sentence this year. How about some nice brands and billionaires? The Nice List “The words 'nice' and ‘billionaires' aren't typically heard together,” joked Matt as we began our discussion of the other half of the list. However, several billionaires and brands used their powers for good this year. Patagonia, Yvon Chouinard—Patagonia's founder, Yvon Chouinard, built a worldwide brand known for sustainability. This year, Chouinard transferred his ownership in the outdoor apparel company, valued at $3 billion, to a trust designed to protect the company's independence and donate its profits – often north of $100 million annually—to protecting our planet. Brands built on purposeful behavior endure. Dolly Parton, Doggy Parton—Country music icon and entrepreneur Dolly Parton launched her Doggy Parton collection of pet dog accessories, merging her love of animals with her can-do philanthropy. A portion of every sale supports animal rescue efforts. Jeff Bezos even recognized the power of Dolly Parton, writing her a check for $100 million to spend on charitable causes. Eileen Fisher, Eileen Fisher—“Fashion isn't always nice,” Matt began. However, Fisher built a fashion empire that supported more realistic apparel for women of every age and body type. And instead of taking her company public, she began transferring ownership to employees in 2006. Today, as Fisher steps away from the brand's leadership, employees own nearly half the company. What brand has made Matt smile recently? As always, with the list focus of this annual episode, I was worried that I'd taken all of Matt's “smiles.” However, he assured me that he had one left. And a timely one at that with the World Cup—USA soccer. “They represent great brand behavior by seeking pay equity for their women's team.” To learn more about Matt Williams, check out the Brand Federation website. Mike Gardon was a hardworking type-A professional trader and entrepreneur. But he found real fulfillment when he stopped making decisions with his head and began making them with his heart. Now, he's joining us for a frank conversation on the power of teaching our kids entrepreneurship, the importance of work-life balance, and how to live a life you're proud of. Mike Gardon is the founder of multiple successful businesses, an investor, a Digital Media Executive, and most importantly - a husband and father. He is currently the CEO of Rejoin Media, a holding company for digital brands and businesses. He is also the Executive Editor and Host of the acclaimed Careercloud Radio podcast. Mike is an advocate for remote work and intentional work-life integration. He runs his teams remotely from the beautiful (and affordable!) Midwest, where he resides with his wife and three young boys. You can read Mike's writing and media mentions on investing, startups, life and work across the internet on these sites: The Simple Dollar, Reviews.com, The Huffington Post, Forbes, Business Insider, Yahoo News, GoBankingRates, Ask Men, Cosmopolitan, Discover Financial, The Penny Hoarder and Good Financial Cents. Design your dream life Things seemed like they were progressing in Mike's life. He was a young futures trader in Chicago taking risks and learning a lot. But he describes his time in trading as mediocre - because his heart wasn't in it.  When he read The Art of Learning by Josh Waitzkin, he had a powerful realization that sometimes you have to take steps backward in order to propel yourself forward. Abandoning his expectations for a linear career path, Mike quit his trading job the very next day and got his MBA, beginning a career in content marketing. He eventually founded ReJoin Media to grow digital brands in a conscious and thoughtful way. He also hosts the Careercloud podcast, created to help listeners design the dream life and career of their choosing. Early in his career Mike looked around him and didn't feel aligned with the expectations of corporate America. Rigid and unforgiving, these positions often demanded a workaholic attitude and a neglect of the day-to-day activities of family life. He decided to envision a life he could be proud of and tailor his career to fit his personal goals. More and more entrepreneurs are choosing their career steps to complement an integration with work and life - and this trend is not going anywhere! Mike Gardon built multiple successful businesses around the importance of being present for his wife and his three sons. The best ideas are inspired In addition to his work in digital marketing and investing, Mike Gardon also founded Quotebook, a keepsake journal created out of a desire to preserve his own family's memories.  Early in his marriage to his wife Stephanie, Mike realized the importance of showing up. Stephanie attended Medical School and did her Residency while Mike's career was taking off - leaving them exhausted and disconnected. They were collapsed on the couch after a long day when Stephanie blurted out something funny about the cheese balls they were snacking on. After Mike rushed to write it down, he conceived of the idea to write down the moments that matter.  Now parents of three young boys, Mike and Dr. Stephanie Gardon write down the hilarious things their sons say, reading them aloud at bedtime. It helps them bond over the humor of everyday life. The boys even learn the power of entrepreneurship through helping Mike fulfill orders for Quotebook - mastering lessons about money, marketing, customer service and follow-through. The Gardons also donate part of the proceeds of Quotebook to fight the opioid crisis, giving opportunities for essential and life-saving services to those who need them. The Quotebook journal is tailor-made to help other families remain close even when life gets rushed. When discussing Quotebook, Mike Gardon reminds us that the best business ideas connect us to our humanity! Everything Mike does, he does with heart. After listening to this episode, you'll be inspired to design a life you're proud of! Quotes “I'm big on figuring out what type of life you want, and then figuring out how to build that.” “I say ‘work life', instead of ‘career', because I think our work and our lives are really integrated.” “I had to find what I didn't want, and build a company that gave us flexibility and ease to be parents, husbands and wives, instead of our goal being to grow-grow-grow all the time.” “I always have this battle between being aspirational and shooting for the moon, and finding balance. At the end of the day, what our people are after is flexibility and opportunity. If I can provide that, I'm pretty happy!” “I've stopped being hyper-rational and thinking about the numbers. This doesn't come naturally to me; I've worked with a coach on it. As I've led with the feeling, it's led me in a good direction.” “Quotebook was born out of something deeply personal. Before my wife and I were married, I was trading and she was in medical school. We came home and we were so tired. We could just collapse on the couch and inevitably someone would say something funny. Now, we read these funny things and get transported back to that moment. Now we have kids, three young boys, and they say funny things. We even read from it at bedtime.” “I used Quotebook to teach my kids about entrepreneurship. You have to risk something, talk to people, get feedback and understand how people will use it. It's been this cool mentorship path with my kids.” “The funny moments are what we look back on and remember.” “I don't want [my kids] to think about how to be a success. I want them to think about, ‘how can I enjoy my life?'” “Big decisions like what to do with your life - I don't think you can just think your way through that.” Links mentioned in this episode: Visit Mike Gardon's personal website at https://www.michaelgardon.com  Listen to Mike as he hosts the Careercloud radio podcast on their website: https://www.careercloud.com/careercloud-radio  Contact ReJoin Media at https://www.rejoinmedia.com/  Learn more about the Quotebook journal on the website: https://quotebookjournal.com/  Connect with Mike Gardon on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michaelgardon/

In this episode, we'll dive deeper into the nuance of stock valuation. A rule of thumb is a simple reference point method to quickly determine whether a stock is overvalued or undervalued. A rule of thumb for valuation is not a substitute for valuation, but simply a starting point to allow you to focus and prioritize your time on ideas that appear to be good values. Earnings Yield - Current Earnings / Stock Price Earnings Yield on Cost: Possible Future Earnings / Original Stock Purchase Price Rule of thumb: Earnings yield on cost must eventually exceed 10% in order to earn a 10% rate of return on your investment (due to business performance) versus speculation. Investing Rule - Earnings Yield and Discount Rate Stocks must eventually trade at an earnings yield on cost equal to your discount rate in order to earn your required return on capital for you as an investor. David Kaplan is an expert in digital customer acquisition and analytics who faced a major barrier -- what can be done about viewability and attribution.  He comes on the show to share how he came into attribution, what this has enabled him to do, and how he overcame the challenges of early adoption. David Kaplan started his career with the Tribune Company as a sysadmin for a joint venture with America Online. In the early nineties, David became Director of Special Projects for SportsLine, working on some of the earliest sports websites such as Shaq.com and the San-Francisco 49ers. As digital continued its growth, David built out affiliate, paid search and SEO programs for TicketsNow and Discover Financial. In 2009, David took on all digital media responsibilities for Peapod, including aggregating multiple lines of business and integrating a multi-touch attribution platform to become the single source of truth.   Key takeaways: [1:26] I introduce today’s guest, David Kaplan, and invite him to walk us through his career, from starting out as a self-taught developer to creating Shaq’s website to where he is today: Head of Digital Marketing at GrocerKey. [4:14] David speaks to the challenges of acquiring customers while he was at Peapod — Google Analytics taking credit for conversion where the people never even saw the ad, duplicates, etc. — and how he dealt with those before he found attribution. [6:57] David details the priorities he had when he began his search for an attribution partner, starting with viewability. [8:36] Today’s marketing environment is incredibly competitive and the COA is going up, so you definitely need to know what your money is doing! David also touches on the ramifications of customer blindness and resistance. [10:56] David shares his biggest marketing lessons as well as what his aha moment was, with regard to attribution and how he got Peapod to adopt this new technology. [15:23] Getting people to believe the numbers was in part about data warehouse matching but also education about a multi-touch process. [17:10] David explains why the first touch is so important in customer acquisition in non-brand search. [18:12] In 10 years, David predicts that anyone who is serious and can afford it will be doing attribution. [19:04] I thank David for coming on the podcast and sharing so much of his experience.   Be sure to tune in for the next episode and thanks for listening!   Connect with our guest: David Kaplan on LinkedIn   About your host: Jeff Greenfield is the Co-Founder and Chief Attribution Officer of C3 Metrics. Like many bosses, Jon Kaplan thought he was a good leader. The results seemed to prove it. He worked his way up from aspiring academic to public school teacher to corporate instructional designer and eventually into the top learning job at Discover Financial Services, a Chicago-area firm with 17,000 employees. The only problem? His team didn’t agree with his assessment. “I was there for about three or four years and I had managed to take a team that should have been high performing and I just drove them into the ground,” Jon said. “It just was really unpleasant.” What he did in response catapulted his career forward and led to some of the learning organization’s greatest successes. In this episode of the Chief Learning Officer Podcast, Jon talks about that “crucible of leadership,” how he rebuilt himself and his team in the wake of his failure and how they came to establish the Discover College Commitment, an industry-leading tuition assistance program that all Discover employees are eligible for starting on their first day. Plus, Jon and Justin Lombardo talk about why they left academia for the corporate sector and guest co-host Ashley St. John, managing editor for Chief Learning Officer, shares what she’s learned in her first two years on the job and what she looks for when selecting a magazine profile candidate.
