Highly anticipated release, Infinity Pool, marked writer/director Brandon Cronenberg's (Possessor, 2020 Sundance) festival return in the Midnight section lineup. It's taking a few more steps off the beaten path in his twisted exploration of the ravages to human soul. So buckle up because there's so much to unpack... ♦♦ Director: Brandon Cronenberg Screenwriters: Brandon Cronenberg Starring: Alexander Skarsgård, Mia Goth, Cleopatra Coleman Runtime: 118 minutes Sundance Synopsis: James and Em Foster take off to an all-inclusive beach getaway in the fictional state of Li Tolqa to help jump-start his writer's block. Their lazy days are spent relegated to their pricey resort, isolated from the surrounding land. Gabby introduces herself and her partner, Al, as she's a fan of James' last novel, and they would like to spend some time together with the Fosters. The couples plan a secret daytrip outside the compound that ends in a fatal accident with James to blame. For a hefty price, there are loopholes to aid foreign travelers convicted of crimes there, which is how James is first introduced to a perverse subculture of hedonistic tourism. *originally run on January 29, 2023 as part of the MTR Network's Sundance 2023 coverage ♦♦ Snapshot Review: Don't be fool by the slick cinematic treatment and debauchery, Cronenberg's here to push you to think about how you justify your choices. Infinity Pool's a vulgar, darkly humorous, incisive commentary on privilege, enticement, and the destruction of soul. Horror movies set at a travel destination open the door for an almost unimaginable spiral into violence that only seems to happen when you exist in a reality vacuum. Infinity Pool leans into that vacuum to create an environment ripe for corruption. There's a persistent forceful disconnect in the narrative that results in one chaotic-as-hell allegory. Listen and Ro and guest critic Richard Newby dig into Infinity Pool. Infinity Pool opened in theaters January 27, 2023 and is currently streaming on Hulu. A few months ago we announced that we would be reducing the number of individual shows here at MTR Network and that at the end of this year Super Tuesday Recap would come to an end. Seeing how The Flash was the last of our long recurring shows we covered on Super Tuesday Recap, it made the most sense to bring the podcast to a close. However, before we do that, we wanted to end where we began by going allllll the way back to our beginning and cover the show that started it all: Agents of SHIELD. It's been almost a decade since the show debuted and we have to say....it's still damn good. Lots of folks will tell you that the first season wasn't good until the big reveal after Winter Soldier but after rewatching the first 13 episodes of season 1, those folks don't know what they're talking about. Agents of SHIELD is a prime, rare example of a show that was run by creators who knew what story they wanted to tell, stuck to that script and then had the top cover to be able to take as long as they needed to. The first 13 episodes of season 1 really lay the groundwork for not only the rest of season 1 but the rest of the series. Looking back it's really masterful storytelling. The pace is actually pretty quick as well which is something to note because in later season the pace picks up even more. This is going to be a fun and exciting rewatch. Listen as Kriss and Dpalm sing the praises of this great show. Like what you hear? Subscribe so you don't miss an episode! Director: Liz Garbus Starring: Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, Afua Hirsch, Doria Ragland Episodes: 6 Since the announcement of their courtship the global media has been hyper-focused on the pairing that is Prince Henry Charles Albert David (Prince Harry to the rest of us) and Meghan Markle, the American actress and activist. Like his mother Princess Diana, Sarah Ferguson, and even Princess Margaret, this hyper-fixation on outspoken women with a desire to engage the public in a new and modern way has led to a campaign of venom and hate. Prince Harry, who expressed an intense dislike of the media and a desire to step away from the royal box even before his marriage, saw these repeated patterns and decided on a course of action that disrupted the status quo. Harry & Meghan is the Duke and Duchess' response to the ongoing campaign that appeared to be designed to destroy their relationship and return Harry to his "rightful place." The documentary, which features a compilation of family videos and photos, archival news footage, and personal interviews with family, friends, and the couple, attempts to provide answers to the accusations lobbied at them by the media and by, according to the couple, the institution that is the British royal family. From four differing perspectives and understandings of the British royals, we examine the production value of the documentary as well as provide commentary on some of the themes presented, including the development of a non-traditional family, patterns of the Black community, and more. Director: Kogonada Screenwriters: Kogonada Starring: Colin Farrell, Jodie Turner-Smith, Justin H. Min, Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja, Haley Lu Richardson Sundance Synopsis: When Yang — a lifelike, artificially intelligent android that Jake and Kyra buy as a companion for their adopted daughter — abruptly stops functioning, Jake just wants him repaired quickly and cheaply. But having purchased Yang “certified refurbished” from a now-defunct store, he's led first to a conspiracy theorist technician and then a technology museum curator, who discovers that Yang was actually recording memories. Jake's quest eventually becomes one of existential introspection and contemplating his own life, as it passes him by. Snapshot Review: Writer/Director Kogonada understands that the futuristic can serve as a perfect frame for the quietly despondent and emotionally vibrant. After Yang takes an engrossing short story and adapts it into a breathtakingly gorgeous sci-fi film aimed right at the parts of our psyche we don't pay nearly enough attention. Here, the technology acts as a soft component of this vivid backdrop and a gateway through which the audience becomes immersed in the narrative. For all the story's sadness it's just as hopeful a journey into what holds a family together. This is a family in transition and watching them come to terms with the consequences of their unwitting choices offers compelling insight into identity, family and grief. Kogonada's sense of fun is readily apparent in what might be the best title sequence ever in a film. Yet, After Yang superbly translates the essence of loss, and deepens the allegory about our dependence and attachment to technology at the heart of Weinstein's story. This is an adaptation with heart and soul. *this review is updated from The MTR Network's Sundance 2022 coverage. Like what you hear? Subscribe so you don't miss an episode! This month, all of the Deep Dive guests will be folks that Rich wants to give a spotlight to - in particular, the work they do - and give a little preview of what you get. Kicking off is DPalm of the MTR Network to chat about the coolness of Atlanta sports right now, Rich's New York bias regarding the Knicks, the Ring of Honor change-up fundamentally and what it meant to DPalm as a fan, and of course a little comics to close, as they discuss the recent release of Guardians of the Galaxy video game and Palm's recommendation of books to read prior to playing. If you like what you heard with DPalm, check out the UDPod and his top notch coverage of comics via the "Character Corners" on the MTR Network: https://www.mtrnetwork.net/
Audio from the live show with me, MTR Network's Rob Lee and Thomas James, local legend and culture protector. We discuss the work that went into curating "Repercussions", an exhibition of abstract black art. We also talk about the genre of art itself and how it fits into the African diaspora. Enjoy!
They did it. Those crazy SOBs did it. If you told me 10 years ago (hell, 5 years ago) that Sam Wilson, a Black man, would pick up the shield and mantle of Captain America in the MCU, I would have told you that was just wishful thinking. But here we are with Marvel not only putting Sam in a comic-accurate Captain America suit but changing the name of the series to the rightful, Captain America and the Winter Soldier. But not only did they do right by Sam, but they also did right by Isaiah Bradley which they absolutely did not have to do but we're so glad they did. Right now Marvel is 2 for 2 on their Disney+ shows and Loki is right there next in the pipeline. We can't wait to see what they have in store for us on that one. If you want to hear us discuss that series, make sure you sign up for Premium on the MTR Network as we'll be discussing the next two Marvel Disney+ series on there. Like what you hear? He's last documentary focused on the rescue and recovery 9/11 workers. During its production, Korn interviewed Chapin's former partner, Bill Ayres. His casual query of Ayers wondering why no one's ever made a documentary about Harry elicited the response, "Why don't you do it?" Korn discusses bringing this story to life, his person connection to Harry Chapin and what he how he hopes learning more about Chapin and the activism Chapin dedicated his life to will motivate others to stop doubting, and do something. What Would Harry Chapin Be Doing? Taking up Harry's mission, like many before him, director Rick Korn and his partners are throwing a free docu-concert to encourage people to get out and vote. Jeff chops it up with his friend Daniel “Dpalm” Palmer, a Mortgage Consultant and Editor at the MTR Network. Many of us wear multiple hats in our careers, and DPalm is no different. Jeff has known DPalm over 8 years bonding over comics and nerd culture so it was only right to pour out a little liquor and pay homage to the life of Chadwick Boseman. DPalm breaks down the Mortgage industry and what prompted him to transition from operations to mortgage selling, the value of owning vs. renting (and not the usual this or that discussion), the benefits of helping others attain their homeowners dream, the connection between playing as an offensive lineman and selling mortgages, What’s holding people back from buying houses, building a moral compass from Stan Lee comics, and how walking 8 miles a day went from a cathartic release to a lifestyle. This week is a dive into the comments made by new Warner Bros CEO regarding pivoting to streaming, and the potential ramifications it can bear upon comics and wrestling - two areas we exhaustively discuss. Konata Edwards of Dime on Uproxx and DPalm from MTR Network break down with me the ramifications of a corporate entity not loving the product it sells, the potential for a WCW redux, only this time with comic books, how AEW should view the recent actions, as well as WWE's move to the Thunderdome, what both WWE and AEW can learn from a Batman video game, and of course slander of Palm must ensue.
I sat down with DPalm to talk all things pro wrestling from WrestleMania 27, AEW/WWE, WWE being a multimedia entity instead of a pro wrestling company, Sting, and a lot more

"Snowpiercer:" A Procedural Gateway to 1001 Cars Just as in Bong Joon-Ho's feature lengthy film "Snowpiercer," the new TNT series takes place aboard the Great Ark Train in perpetual motion around a globe frozen in the second Ice Age. The survivors are seven years into their trek into the future. The rigid class system, so brutally authoritarian in the film, exists beneath a glossy sheen of orderliness. Jennifer Connelly, Alison Wright in TNT's Snowpiercer. Photograph by Justina Mintz But, beneath the surface, the rumblings of revolution, from the tail, are growing louder as train operations begin to strain under catastrophic set backs. To make matters worse, there's been a murder. This may seem like a far cry from Joon-Ho's grimy allegory about class but that's only true if you've never stop to ask, how did the conditions on the train get to such a brutal point. Once you do, then this step back in time makes sense and ups the tension to a whole new level. The Weather May Have Changed, But People Didn't As a way to introduce life on the Great Ark, the flow and dynamics between the classes and among the stowaways living in the tail of the train, as well as the challenges of sustaining life in a closed ecosystem, a murder in need of solving isn't a bad choice. It creates a logical opening into a complex world built on dirty politics. The head of hospitality, Melanie Cavill (Jennifer Connelly) calls on the last surviving homicide detective Andre Layton (Daveed Diggs) to solve the murder threatening to force the bubbling unrest to the surface. There's just one problem with her choice, Andre lives in the tail and is the head of the brewing rebellion. Katie McGuinness, Daveed Diggs in TNT's Snowpiercer. Photograph by Justina Mintz Layton swiftly realizes he's this investigation puts him in a position to not only see more of the train that anyone else from the tail but try to capitalize on tension between the classes and build strategic relationships the rebellion needs. Story Within A Story While Layton's making his moves, Melanie's intent on keeping the train's inhabitants turned firmly on what she wants. The class divide plays out to create a different kind of drama. In this lux world there's excitement, danger, and twisted machinations intertwine. It's also where this series deviates from it's film roots. If you're familiar with show-runner Graeme Manson (Orphan Black) then you know he's never just talking on one level. So, you can take it as read that this seemingly straightforward police procedural isn't anything so uncomplicated. Taking advantage of the vivid production design to turn the train into a ever-evolving character critical to the plot, the serialized "Snowpiercer" builds on the strength of this dynamic universe to best leverage some of the themes from the original graphic novel Le Transperceneige to create a ten-episode slow-building thrill ride. Settle in for secrets, lies, violence, betrayal, and twisted relationships certain to push things to a tipping point before it's all over. By the end of episode four (and the first full story arc) murder mystery "Snowpiercer" viewers will be primed. There's a murderer set to go to trial and third class workers demanding equal representation. Things are just getting started and order may not survive a murder trail. A Show Worth Discussing If you're a premium subscriber of the MTR Network, the crew's recent re-watch discussion makes it clear, we're are fans of "Snowpiercer." So it's hardly a surprise we're re-caping the series. TNT's Snowpiercer launched on May 17, 2020. While the plot and paced would've been best served by a two-hour premiere, this show's definitely worth watching. Listen in as we discuss the series introduction and story arc that unfolds in episodes one through four. Like what you hear? Subscribe so you don't miss an episode! Character Corner - A Podcast on Your favorite Comic Book Characters
April has been a long year and so we're doing a bit of switching up. We were supposed to be doing a Hulk Character Corner this month but life was just so busy that didn't happen. We still wanted to put out a show for the fans though. So we decided to put part 3 of our Tom King Batman Run up for all listeners on the MTR Network. Part 1 and Part 2 are up on the Premium feed so sign up if you want to hear those. In Part 3 we cover volumes 7 through 9. That's The Wedding, Cold Days and The Tyrant Wing. There's a lot that happens here and it's all revealed to be the master plan of Bane to finally completely "Break the Bat": Booster Gold is an idiot and tries to give Bruce/Batman a "gift" and it goes as horribly as you'd imagine a Booster Gold gift to go Joker and Selina have a heart-to-heart as they both lay bleeding out. Joker plants the "He can't be happy and be Batman" seed Selina leaves Bruce waiting on the rooftop instead of marrying him A distraught and distracted Batman makes a mistake and Bruce is forced to convince a jury that Batman is not infallible in order to save Mr. Freeze from his mistake Grayson tries to cheer up Bruce only to end up with a bullet in his head from KGBeast Bane's reveal as he slowly discredit's Batman Bruce's Flashpoint Daddy is home We'll be back in May with the Hulk Character Corner as well as wrapping up the rest of his series on Premium. DPalm of MTR Network returns to chat Steve Austin leading up to Monday's aired 3/16 episode. However, with the start of Covid-19 isolation, we talk more about the creativity in the moment among wrestlers, how the empty arena shows can affect the bottom lines of WWE, AEW, and companies around the world, and Palm of course has to get a dig or two in on the Knicks. Scarlett pops by to give insight into her article, as well as her future book interests, with a focus on removing some of the luminaries of wrestling away from being end-all be-all evaluators of female talent.

The Outsider: So That's How Y'all Gonna Do Him January 12th marked the premier of HBO's adaptation of Stephen King novel The Outsider. The show's executive produced and written by HBO veteran Richard Price. The Outsider is a supernatural procedural as only King would decide to do it. There's murder, mayhem, small town upheaval, and a boogeyman. Stephen King novels are at the height of popularity once again after big film adaptations Dr. Sleep, It (Part I and II), Shudder's Creepshow and Hulu's Castle Rock. It was only a matter of time before HBO threw it's hat in the ring. HBO's on a roll and it seemed like a good idea to keep up. Ro and Toya, two among the many horror fans on the MTR Network, decided The Outsider was perfect for a read-along as they watch. Despite it's size (560 pages), this particular King story is a steady-building supernatural suspense story (or listen) that's easy to follow and digest. It shoves the weird directly in the middle of a police procedural and keeps you questioning. The show, however, reorders information for maximum use and plays with all the cards face up on the table. From the very start, it's best to brace because it's easy to miss something. The Premise Cheerokee City's on the hunt for a vicious killer. A young boy's been found violated and mutilated in the woods and all the evidence points to favorite son, Terry Maitland (Jason Bateman). Everyone trusts Terry. He's been coaching Little League and Pop Warner football for years. Convinced they have an air tight case, Maitland police detective Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn) stages a public arrest. Anderson has Terry taken into custody in front of the entire town during the big Little League game. HBO's The Outsider features a stellar cast all who bring depth and grit to a believable investigation happening under unbelievable circumstances. It's edgy and intense yet balanced with facts that keep you invested in both the investigation and the people. The Outsider's always had a contemporary feel but Richard Price brings an extra layer of authenticity to the game and it's ensured we're in for all ten episodes ride. HBO released episode 1 and 2 back to back on the 12th. So, we'll be doing the show discussion in batches. Trust me, you'll definitely want the time to think about all the interlocking narratives before moving on. This first review is general Stephen King discussion and our few of our favorite King novels and then we dig into the books themes and how the show kicks things off in episode one. The next review will cover episode 2 and 3. Then we'll take the show in batches (with hopefully some other folks from the network joining in the discussions) from there. If you want to read along (or just pick up The Outsider) shop indie and thwart our would-be corporate overlords. Like what you hear? Subscribe so you don't miss an episode! In the words of the great Michael Jordan: Fuck them Kids Seriously, if you ever want to watch a movie that has you cheering for some kids to get exactly what they deserve, then The Lodge is for you. The Lodge is by no means perfect. It’s a little slow. And it doesn’t do a good enough job of hiding what’s really happening. But if you’re like us here at the MTR Network and like watching little brats who don’t know how to leave people alone, get what’s coming to them, then the end is the payoff you’re waiting for. The Lodge is another film that really challenges what we consider “horror”. It’s not really “scary” but definitely has some creepy (and well shot) moments. And when things start to take a turn, it does have more of a traditional horror feel. In the end we enjoyed this film despite some of its issues. We definitely recommend checking it out if it hits a theater near you. Like what you hear? Subscribe so you don't miss an episode! Before we start that, however, I would be remiss without having Daniel Palmer - aka Dpalm aka The Galactus of MTR Network - spending the first five minutes talking about Batista's effect on James Gunn's return to Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Disney's acquisition of Fox, and some spoilery chat about the fourth Skrull. Then, oh and then we dive deep into the legacy of Steve Austin, how the current Becky Lynch (Palm's natural evolution from Sting) and Kevin Owens homages give a light in 2019. We then chat about the physics of the stunner, what are the traits of the legacy of Austin that can exist today, and much, much more!
Kriss and Dpalm are back to review the latest episode of The Flash (sorry for the delay in getting it out). We really are loving this season and how everything is coming together. This season has been doing a great job of keeping Cicada an interesting and challenging villain while also having the Thawne threat around the corner. And the twist with the second Cicada now has us asking all kinds of questions (Time travel? Another Earth?). Also add into all that the fact that Barry has really become the motivational hero we know him to be (even giving Joe West Black Fatherhood Moment talks back to Joe himself), this has all just been a fun show to watch this season Oh and we do a quick and short talk of the Endgame trailer because...we have to. Speaking of Endgame, if you want to watch Endgame with the MTR Network crew in LA or in DC, tickets for our private viewings go on sale Monday, March 18th at Noon est. Check Endgame.MTRNetwork.Net for more details. Barry channels that great Flash motivation to convince Cicada to take the meta human cure. Orlin agrees, Cicada is defeated and everyone lives happily ever after…sike just kidding. Of course it didn’t’ work and now everyone is fucking screwed Kriss and Dpalm record the Mailbag at the end of every month. The end of 2018 for the Deep Dive is welcomed by two solid co-hosts and even better men - Cam Hawkins of the PWTorch and South Kongress, as well as Daniel Palmer of MTR Network. The trio, along with callers, discuss the stories they were most entertained by in 2018, including personal favorite matches (not just collectively popular choices!), as well as a few late in the game tweets from Nia Jax, listeners' thoughts on matches and events they're looking forward to in 2019, and which wrestlers can be potentially in line for a fall from grace. Happy New Year and Keep Diving!
Kriss & Phenom are joined by new MTR Network member Ro to discuss Steve McQueen's highly talked about and anticipated film, Widows. This film is a lot and we mean that in a good way. Widows doesn't hold the audience's hand and expects them to pick up on certain things throughout and the result is a masterfully put together film. McQueen does a great job of setting scenes and framing shots in order to bring the audience right into the film There's an entire political subplot that happens in this film that while it is connected to the main story, has it's own direction and twists and turns. This film should produce several Best Supporting nods come award season with Elizabeth Debicki and Daniel Kaluuya being standouts. Kaluuya is such a great villain. And we love Cynthia Erivo. Seriously go check out this film. You won't be disappointed. Listen to our review and let us know what you think in the comments. Here is the link to the Brian Tyree Henry interview with GQ we mentioned at the top of the episode. On this episode of Movie Trailer Reviews, we welcome Ro to the MTR Network family as she joins Kriss & Brandon to review Boy Erased. This film is based off the memoirs of Garrard Conley and tells his struggles growing up as a gay child in a Christian fundamentalist household after he's outted to his parents. While the film is good, what keeps it from being great are underdeveloped supporting characters and not delving deep enough into just how terrible the lead character's parents and the camps were. When dealing with a sensitive subject matter, it can be difficult to find where they line is so that the film doesn't go into torture porn (*cough* Detroit *cough*). The flip side to that is that not really getting into and addressing how terrible something is can sanitize the story. In Boy Erased, director Joel Edgerton made a deliberate choice to try to not paint Jared's parents as evil when they do evil things to this young man. Again, the film is good...but we can't help but think of how good the film could have been. Listen to our full review below (or by subscribing to Movie Trailer Reviews on your favorite podcast app) and leave us a comment with what you thought of the film. https://oembed.libsyn.com/embed?item_id=7499522 Like what you hear? Nonstop Culture is back with episode 2! In this episode, we got friend of the show(s) DPalm from the MTR Network to impart his comic/sports wisdom upon us. We chat about his podcast origins, and how simply being a fan of cool stuff turned into hosting multiple shows. The reward for a job well done is more work! As always, it's a fun and engaging conversation! This week in trending news we discuss: The rumored Matrix reboot/remake/ world expansion and whether or not this is a good idea NCAA March Madness and the high risk, high reward of filling out a bracket. DPalm is anti bracket, but Jeff praises survivor pools as the superior March Madness method of degenerate gambling behavior LaVar Ball: Attention whore or passionate parent? Eddie Murphy tweets about Coming to America 2 and watches the world burn, while Jeff reluctantly convinces himself that Coming to America 2 on Broadway is a thing that needs to happen Tomi Lahren gets suspended from the Blaze for her Pro Choice views (irony much?) Tom Brady recovers his stolen Super Bowl Jersey Instagram allows users to save IG live stories, and Jeff finally rants about how Instagram is freezing him out of the @NonstopCulture username.
