Uncommon Sense
Coffee Culture, with Grazia Ting Deng

Think you know “coffee culture”? Anthropologist Grazia Ting Deng discusses her research into the “paradox of Chinese Espresso” – or why and how coffee bars in Italy, seen as such distinctively “Italian” spaces, became increasingly managed by Chinese baristas since 2008. Grazia tells Rosie and guest host Amit Singh – who highlights the overlap with his own co-authored research into the UK's desi pubs – about her ethnographic study and how she even trained as a barista to better grasp her subject. Painting a vivid picture of how management by Chinese baristas grew due to economic, social and cultural factors in Bologna, Italy, she describes how and why these baristas have typically preserved rather than altered the culture in place. The coffee bar, she shows, is an everyday site of friction and adaptation where diverse groups come together and interact to construct a convivial space. Crucially, Grazia argues, conviviality is not some lofty goal – as is often thought to be the case – rather, it's a lived reality, characterised by contingency and compromise.Guest: Grazia Ting DengHosts: Rosie Hancock, Amit SinghExecutive Producer: Alice BlochSound Engineer: David CracklesMusic: Joe GardnerArtwork: Erin AnikerFind more about Uncommon SenseEpisode ResourcesBy Grazia Ting DengChinese EspressoHopefully a Good LifeI Cinesi among Others: The Contested Racial Perceptions among Chinese Migrants in ItalyDiscussed by Rosie, Amit and Grazia“Heaven's Kitchen” – Courtney Bender“In Search of Respect” – Philippe Bourgois“Challenging Codes” – Alberto Melucci“New Ethnicities and Urban Culture” – Les Back“Coffee and Cigarettes” – film, dir. How do you explain the concept of God to children? What about other serious subjects such as Death?  Best-selling children's book author Etan Boritzer is our guest today talking about his series “WHAT IS”? His books focus on character education and social issues. His trademark style of opening questions and dialogue for children, parents, and educators allow for critical thinking skills to develop in the child. Etan writes books which focus on diversity and multi-culturalism, while addressing complex topics, but are written specifically for a younger audience. Four of them are: “What is Love?” “What is Death?” “What is Beautiful?” and “What is God?” Interactive, and meant for discussion,  he helps to fulfill the real mission of discovery in learning.

In this episode, I share a fascinating and wonderful chat I had with Urmi Hossain, a polyglot, author, YouTuber, and a woman empowering and inspiring others. Urmi shares her history of language learning, which began in childhood as she grew up in Italy with Bengali heritage. She tells of growing up in Sicily, speaking Bengali at home and Italian in the community and how she often felt in between worlds, neither fully Italian nor fully Bengali. Urmi takes us through her path toward realization that she doesn't have to choose between cultures and which one she identifies with, and that, in fact, she is of both – Italian by birth and Bengali by blood. In this chat, we get to hear about Urmi's journey through other languages, as well, about the challenges she faced moving to Montreal as a French speaker, and about her passion for Spanish. You will hear the love for Spanish in her voice as she takes us through her travel experiences in Mexico and the Dominican Republic! It was such a pleasure to have this chat with Urmi and be given the honor of hearing her personal story of self- and cultural identity and the role languages have played in that. However, with our treatment of multicultural communities throughout the pandemic, a selective immigration progress and fraught ongoing Indigenous relations – Australia continues to deliver some sharp lessons about race. Sophie describes her first trip to Vietnam and how it changed her mindset and made her want to come back more permanently! We talk about what connotations the term "Vietkieu" has and what it's been like for Sophie coming back to the homeland (the good and the bad). Sophie shares more about her Youtube channel, The Tam Show, and the mission behind it-to help you go for their dreams and realize you are the "master of your life." HELL YEAH. Sophie is a French lady with Vietnamese parents. She was born and grew up in France in the suburbs of Paris. During her studies, she had an internship in Hanoi, her true first time in Vietnam. She found her roots and had such a good experience, she knew that she wouldn’t work in France and that she was meant to work abroad. Her open-mindedness and love for traveling brought her to book a one-way ticket after her finishing studies to come back to Vietnam more than 2 years ago, but this time in Saigon, where there are more job opportunities. Since that day, it has been a long journey for Sophie who had a lot of ups and downs in her professional life and came to some deep realizations. Regina Huber is the founder and CEO of Transform Your Performance. She is a Multicultural Transformational Leadership Coach and Consultant for Inclusive Diversity with extensive corporate and entrepreneurial experience and a deep passion for Diverse Leadership, Co-Creation and Dance. She is a global inspirational speaker and author of Speak up, Stand out and Shine and the white paper "Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives Thrive with Maximum Leadership Support." Regina helps companies leverage their diverse talent and transform their diversity and inclusion strategy using her own signature methodology. She speaks 5 languages and has 18 years of international corporate experience, including management positions at The Boston Consulting Group. She has owned businesses in Argentina, Brazil, and the U.S. and has worked with clients on several continents. She holds a Global Advisor role at several Africa and U.S. based projects supporting female advancement and emerging leaders and received the Humanitarian Award by Global Goodwill Ambassadors. In today’s conversation, Regina shares her own story of self-growth and overcoming obstacles to be able to speak up, stand out and shine, including how she overcame extreme shyness as a child growing up in a small village, and how she endured a painful experience with a former business partner that lead to her having to start from scratch in a new country. In fact, Regina has reinvented herself several times and describes the benefits and lessons she has learned that guide her today in helping women transform their lives. We also explore diversity and inclusion and Regina provides insight into her mission to help more women reach the top of organizations and what you can do to further your career and, as a leader, make the most of your team’s potential. Key Takeaways Stepping into an empowering mindset requires more than just our conscious mind. 5% of our behaviors are driven by our conscious mind whereas 95% is driven by our subconscious mind. The function of our past is to transform it into wisdom. Diverse teams are potentially more innovative, providing there is a basis of trust. When we are fully aware of our distinct strengths we are less threatened by others’ strengths because we are all uniquely great. As a woman, when you address a man about being an ally for you, consider what is in it for him. We need to bust the belief that there are only so many seats at the table. Women need to stop competing with each other and begin to find more opportunities to endorse each other. Co-creation goes beyond collaboration, in that we are not just working together, we are bringing our best ideas and talent to the table and creating something much bigger and better. Most men talk about their potential and get paid for it, while most women talk about their past and get paid for that. How is youth culture changing in a globalised city? In Urban Multiculture: Youth, Politics and Transformations in a Global City Malcolm James, a lecturer at the University of Sussex, introduces the concept of Urban Multiculture as a framework for understanding his ethnographic research in East London. The book considers memory, territory and cultural practice, thinking through how the politics of class and race, alongside the lived experience of young people in the area, are being reconfigured by technology. This reconfiguration takes place in the context of global flows of people and culture, in a contested and transforming East London. The book demonstrates the importance of ethnographic research, both to how we understand and do politics, and to how we understand the contemporary city. It will be of interested to any scholar of urban studies, as well as those working on youth, race and class. Dave OBrien is the host of New Books In Critical Theory and is a Senior Lecturer in Cultural Policy at the Institute for Cultural and Creative Entrepreneurship, Goldsmiths College, University of London. His research covers a range of areas between sociology and political science, including work on the British Civil Service, British Cultural Policy, cultural labour, and urban regeneration. His most recent books are Cultural Policy: Management, Value and Modernity in the Creative Industries and After Urban Regeneration (edited with Dr Peter Matthews). Analysing the relationship between whiteness and Englishness, looking at processes of social inclusion and exclusion in the countryside, the migration of Eastern European workers to the countryside and rural discourses of community and multi-culture. hereas multiculturalism has been steadily 'downgraded' on the policy agenda both in the UK and other parts of Europe during the 2000s, social life at neighbourhood level is increasingly characterised by an everyday negotiation of categorical boundaries such as migration histories, religions, migrant statuses, and socio-economic disparities. This series will focus on emerging empirical research and methodologies that engage with such localised, intercultural processes. The presentations are based on findings from a range of different settings, including London, northern England, the Netherlands and Germany, and also focusing on new 'zones of encounter' that go beyond the traditional inner-city perspective.
