Dan chats with Stewart Lee, author of "Me and My Addiction," about his journey with alcoholism and sobriety. Stewart shares his relatable story, from trying to fit in as an awkward teenager to hitting rock bottom and attempting suicide. He discusses getting and staying sober, including stints in rehab, relapsing at big life events, and finally committing to recovery. Stuart offers insights into addiction psychology and talks about finding purpose through new hobbies like boxing and dance. This raw, honest interview provides many teachable moments about addiction that will resonate with those struggling with their own addiction or that of a loved one. KEY TAKEAWAYS Addiction manifests in teenagers trying to fit in, using substances to find confidence and escape anxiety. The desire can start very young. Hitting rock bottom, like a suicide attempt or threat of violence, may motivate you to get sober but isn't a cure-all. Relapse is common. Major life events like having a baby are often excuses to drink, not opportunities for sobriety. Addiction distorts priorities. Getting sober requires finding new challenges and purposes in life to obsess over, not just avoiding substances. Sobriety gives you priceless memories and relationships that active addiction robs you of. The first thought that comes to an addict's mind when using is often how to keep using, not regret. People who use moderately can still have unhealthy relationships with substances without realising it BEST MOMENTS "I woke up and my first thought was 'Oh shit, I haven't succeeded,' when I survived my suicide attempt." "I hoped my newborn daughter would stay in the hospital overnight so I could keep drinking and 'wet the baby's head.'" "Doing a dance competition in front of 400 people was scarier than boxing." "The best highs require the most effort, which is why relapse is so tempting." "Sobriety gives you priceless memories and relationships that money can't buy." "When the addiction takes hold, all I think about is how to keep drinking, not what I'm missing." Kirk Norcross Instagram “My name is Kirk Norcross, I'm 34 years old, I had a pretty good run, a TV career which I can't even remember hardly any of that, drugs consumed my life I always used drugs like an addict but I didn't use them all the time until my fiancé split up with me for no reason and never gave me a reason and I was so upset, hurt and confused. I started using drugs to self-medicate to shut my brain down to stop thinking and then spiral turned and turned and turned until I was like a wrecking ball everywhere I went every penny I had went on drugs, my whole life revolved around drugs I tried recovery a couple of times and kept relapsing then I lost my due to suicide, and it was like something clicked in my head that I need to step up to the plate and be the man that my father wanted me to be, and from then on, I've been so as of today's date I am 583 days sober haven't touched any drugs or alcohol or any other mind-influencing substance since then.” Menace 2 Sobriety, podcast, actor, comedian, sobriety, sober, story, years sober, consequences, behaviour, alcoholism, drug addiction, denial, insecurity, fear-driven,rock bottom, sober, rehab, suicidal, addict, realization, struggle, addiction, rock bottom, denial, curiosity, hope, denial, gratitude, self-awareness,behaviour, guilt, shame, emotions, gratitude, self esteem, gratitude, sober life, drugs, confidence, sobriety, ego, drinking,Sobriety Podcast #wedorecover # recoveroutloud #addicitonrecovery #addiction #recoverytok #sobriety #sober #sobertiktok #sobertok #soberlife #sobercurious #soberliving: https://www.instagram.com/dappersinstagram/This show was brought to you by Progressive Media

EPISODE 237 - Stewart Lee - Me and My Addiction - one man's battle to break free from a life heavily impacted by alcoholismAbout our Guest - I grew up in Exeter, Devon and lived with my parents and 2 older sisters. I didn't really have a troubled life but from a young age I discovered alcohol and my journey into addiction began.Drugs and alcohol consumed my life from that point on. It got so bad that I thought I would either end up in prison, a psychiatric unit or dead. Either by someone else killing me or succeeding in killing myself.I managed to find a way to recover and now live a clean sober life. You could say the complete opposite of how I lived before. I'm hoping now that if I share my experience through writing books I can help to inspire anyone that change is possible. The Book: Me and My Addiction tells the intense, but overall positive, account of one man's battle to break free from a life heavily impacted by alcoholism. This thought-provoking book gives the reader a no holds barred, insight into addictions, and their power to change people's lives, often without the victim realizing until it's too late.Stewart's reflection of the problems around addiction, along with his real, raw and (brutally!) honest stories will open your mind to see life through the eyes of an addict. If you think you, or maybe someone you know, may have an issue with alcohol it provides answers to the questions that many are afraid to ask, a deeper understanding of how addiction works, along with hope that it's possible to break the cycle of destruction and to turn your life around.https://www.stewartleeauthor.co.uk/___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/MindShift Power Podcast is for teens, about teens, and anyone who works with teens. Ed Kressy is not your average human. He's much sweeter than your average human and his sweetness emanates from him.He also has a much crazier story than your average addict with a crazy story...and this is coming from someone who's heard every crazy addiction story over the past two decades. The short version: he went into a meth-induced psychosis for 14 years that left him convinced he was involved in 9/11. The longer version is in his memoir, My Addiction & Recovery: Just Because You're Done With Drugs Doesn't Mean Drugs Are Done With You, which you can get here.He is one of the most exquisitely talented writers I've come across in a long time—something I found, and tell him in this episode, surprising. I've read almost every book out there about addiction and recovery and few are as brilliantly crafted as this. Please get this book. Not only will you be exposed to some of the best writing around but all proceeds are being donated to prisons. And that relationship with prisons, for those here for the marketing tidbits, is how Ed was able to get the great Seth Godin to blurb his book. In this episode, we get into Ed's crazy story, how many drafts he wrote of this book (you don't want to know) and his mission to get the book into every prison he can (so far, it has been accepted by 108 facilities in nine states, serving an estimated 132,000 incarcerated people). Listen in to find out more about the guy whose recovery-related work has appeared in the Washington Post and who's delivered criminal justice-themed talks for groups at Amazon, Cisco, Google, LinkedIn and MIT. Addiction in any form can impact decision-making in more ways than you may think. What would you do if forced to choose between the life you know vs. the life you could have? Research has shown that addictive behaviors are symptoms of decision-making processes that fail to take into account long-term consequences of actions. These thinking errors can create unwanted challenges for finding clarity and making healthy choices. This episode features the story of author and recovery advocate Ed Kressy, who entered long-term recovery after a history of battling drug addiction. We discuss the impact of addiction on decisions and how his choice to find sobriety led him to a place he never could have imagined. You can get a copy of Ed's book My Addiction & Recovery on Amazon, which best-selling author Seth Godin called "personal and beautifully written...a story of redemption, possibility and the power of a second chance." People dealing with illness, disease, addiction, and mental or emotional issues are further stressed. Substance abuse and alcoholism are at an all-time high. Today I am addressing these issues with someone who knows first-hand how to deal with them successfully, author and speaker Ed Kressy. As a young child, Ed was bullied by other kids for his love of reading and writing. He started drinking at age 16 and gradually moved on to heavy drug use to escape from pain and reality, leading to an arrest by the FBI. He struggled for years with a dissociative disorder that forced him into addiction recovery and a life of sobriety. Ed's story is now an inspiration for many people around the world. “My Addiction & Recovery” inspires readers with an amazing story of transformation and rebuilding one’s life. A timely reminder that people can overcome addiction, mental health challenges, and criminal histories to make solid contributions to society. Through one recovered addict’s firsthand account of how incredible people motivated him to do the hard work of making positive changes, readers will glimpse hope for the lives of others and for their own lives as well. Ed Kressy is a former drug addict and welfare cheat. Though he worked for a top notch company and had a great life, he still used drugs and alcohol to help solve problems. Ed was once arrested by the FBI, only later to receive a community service award by the Director of the FBI. He is also the author of My Addiction & Recovery: Just Because You're Done With Drugs, Doesn't Mean That Drugs Are Done With You. Ed discusses the course of his life and his descent in to drug and alcohol abuse. The eventual effects upon his life are shared as well as the road to recovery. In all, this is a great tale of hope, forgiveness, and second chances. Philip Sharp talks in the essay segment about the idea of how much fault belongs to society rather than an individual. The competing paradigms are compared and considered.

Ed Kressy is probably the only person ever to have once been arrested by the FBI, then gone on to receive a community service award from the director of the FBI! Ed threw away many opportunities: Career with Fortune Magazine's aBest Company in America to Work For, a home ownership in San Francisco, many loving relationships. He spent years in psychosis and destitution, months in jail, nights in homeless shelters. Yet today Ed achieved a lifelong dream by publishing a book, My Addiction & Recovery: Just Because You' re Done with Drugs, Doesn't Mean Drugs Are Done with You (Lifestyle Entrepreneurs Press) as well as articles in The Washington Post. He appeared on stage for The Moth and delivered talks for MIT, Cisco, Google, and Linkedln. Ed volunteers inside maximum-security prisons and jails, helping incarcerated persons develop skills for employment, entrepreneurism, and self-advocacy. He volunteers for law enforcement, helping them better serve communities affected by incarceration and addiction. Alex and Ed discuss mental health, overcoming adversity and more.
Listen in as host LaMarr D. Shields talks with author Ed Kressey about the process of rebuilding their lives after struggling with the disease of addiction. Ed describes how and why he made the turn away from addiction to seek help and share the most significant lessons learned along the way—about shame, adversity, strength, perspective, and gratitude. Ed struggled through challenges and pain. After two decades of drug addiction—including 11 devastating years of addiction to methamphetamine—Ed had thrown away his life savings, biotech career, home…even his dog. He’d spent months in jail and four years in meth psychosis. He heard disembodied voices, believed vast conspiracies targeted him and estranged himself from everyone who’d tried to help him. His book, My Addiction & Recovery, is for readers seeking a greater understanding of the possibilities for power through adversity, via a personal, poignant, triumphant story. You will be inspired by his message, which is pointed, positive, and powerful: Redemption is possible, despite the most hopeless-seeming circumstances. Never give up on a human being…kindness is never wasted. Second chances benefit the giver (society), as well as the receiver. www.edkressy.com

My Addiction story part 1
Richard Gengras moved to Vermont with his family in the late 1980s, and moved from Killington to Danville in the late '90s. He is a chef and a singer and songwriter. On this week's podcast, Richard reads his original poem, "A Morning in the Middle of My Addiction." This episode is supported by Gifford Health Care.
Thank you for continuing on this journey. It takes courage to persevere in something that is difficult. You are to be commended for completing step one and beginning step two. In this step we will examine the breadth and impact of our addictions. In step one, we named our struggle; now we will examine it.As we consider the impact of your struggle, I want to ask you to wrestle with a difficult question. Be as honest and objective as you can. One of the primary goals of this chapter is to help you answer this question as concretely as possible.Reflection: What do you think will be the result if you continue with your addictive behavior(s) for the next 5-10 years? At the end of this chapter you will be asked to make a decision, “Is change worth the effort?” The goal is not for you to engage this question in an emotional or reactionary way; making commitments out of exasperation or giving up. You will be asked to make a reasoned conclusion to the question, “How do the benefits of continuing my life as-is compare to the costs living as I am?” If your assessment (no one else’s, you must make this choice) is that it is the most objectively wise and God-honoring thing for you to do to pursue sobriety, then you will be asked to commit to this goal and making a personalized plan to pursue it.Before making that assessment, we will examine three areas of your life. The History and Growth of My AddictionThe Impact of My Addiction on MeThe Impact of My Addiction on Others See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
