Can YouTube Debates Bring America Back Together? with Jubilee's Jason Y. Lee

In a YouTube landscape filled with podcasts and talking heads, Jubilee Media's wild debate videos stand apart: A doctor debates 20 anti-vaxxers, Ben Shapiro debates 25 liberals, Pete Buttigieg debates 25 conservatives. But are these viral videos bringing a divided America back together or are they just profiting off of polarization? This week, Ben and Max bring on Jubilee's founder and CEO, Jason Y. Lee, to talk about his vision for “radical empathy” for quite extreme views and how even dumb debates – between flat earthers and “round earthers,” for one – can be productive. They also discuss why the Biden White House censored parts of their video with Pete Buttigieg and the media lessons Democrats can learn for the next election. ‘The Majority Report' host Sam Seder has been a political commentator for more than two decades. But nothing he has done in his long career has brought him quite as much attention as a new video in which he was forced to debate 20 hardcore Donald Trump supporters one by one as part of Jubilee Media's increasingly popular “Surrounded” series. In this episode, Seder breaks down the surreal experience of systematically schooling the shockingly young and diverse MAGA adherents on everything from Social Security to DEI to the prospect of a full-on American theocracy. He also has some choice words for California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has taken a very different approach to engaging with the other side. Later, Seder talks about getting his start in political media at Air America, the current state of MSNBC, his long-running voice role on ‘Bob's Burgers' and the unexpected benefits of appearing on ‘Sex and the City' 25 years ago.Follow Sam Seder on Bluesky @samsederFollow Matt Wilstein on Bluesky @mattwilstein Follow The Last Laugh on Instagram @lastlaughpodHighlights from this episode and others at The Daily Beast Hosted on Acast. But unlike my first debate appearance with them, this time Jubilee's production attempted to pull a seat up in the debate and join the argument in the editing process. They included numerous stats and "fact checks" that were either completely irrelevant to the topic at hand, or even worse, were studies with such bad methodologies they've become a running joke. Honestly, if their producers wanted to debate me...I would have been happy to do so. But this was a cheap trick - and since so many Americans are never taught how to actually read data, it seems many in their audience are falling for their attempt to discredit very solid statistics. So join me as I yet again have to fact check the fact checkers in this behind the scenes reaction to the final product.

Since the beginning of recorded history, it has never been possible for people with opposing viewpoints to agree on anything — until now. Los Angeles-based media company Jubilee Media describes their extremely popular MIDDLE GROUND YouTube series as a “social experiment” bringing together individuals with opposing identities or viewpoints for some civilized discussion (for a change.) Some of these matchups that were viewed millions of times include “Flat Earthers vs. Scientists”, “Men's Rights vs. Feminism”, and “Millionaires vs. Minimum Wage Workers”. These are all juicy concepts, but this week Ash and Julian choose to review MIDDLE GROUND's format by discussing their episode “Progressive Christians vs. Conservative Christians”, where Biblical literalists and deconstructionists smack down over discussion topics like abortion, LGBT rights, Black Lives Matter, and more.  We notice that MIDDLE GROUND's flawed format is actually a great way for both sides to reveal their own classic biases and fallacies. Conservative Christians tend to claim their favorite Bible passages are literally true while blatantly ignoring others; meanwhile, progressive Christians love to just make stuff up that sounds nice and claim Jesus would support it. We spin our wheels about this for a while before moving on to a debate between Polyamorists vs. Monogamists, for no reason other than to gawk at its participants. We conclude that Jubilee Media, like Dhar Mann (another popular YouTube media production company who we have studied in multiple Boys' Bible Study episodes), thrives on creating emotionally exploitative content that disguises itself as wholesome and balanced. No matter who wins on MIDDLE GROUND, we lose! Based off how you answer, you also get a loveprint color (think "aura"), a motto, and a number (an estimate of how ready you are to love). Film is a scary venture, but Dan Chen embraces the challenge of centering AAPI stories rather than keeping them in the periphery. Filmmakers like him and companies like Jubilee Media are changing the direction of film as AAPI representation has increased on screen and behind the scenes. Dan Chen developed his love of film as a Chinese American teenager growing up in small town Kansas. He picked up the camera to connect with others, partnering with friends to make elaborate coming of age movies, and documenting the moments they'd later be nostalgic for. He studied fine art film photography in college, and graduated from the USC School of Cinematic Arts focusing on cinematography and directing. His work at Jubilee Media has garnered over 100+ million views, and his films have been featured on Vimeo Staff Picks, Short of the Week, Slamdance Film Festival and most recently the 2021 Tribeca Festival, where he premiered his documentary feature debut Accepted to critical acclaim. Accepted follows four high school seniors at the controversial TM Landry school as they grapple with college admissions, national scandal, and the pains of growing up. Dan has decades of directing experience in narrative and documentary, and he trained his eye as a cinematographer and analog film photographer. He sees filmmaking as a way to create life-changing memories for audiences and collaborators alike, and he tells character-driven stories about outsiders, human flaws, and coming of age.

Jason Lee grew up in Kansas raised by a family who idolized education. They even said school is “like Disneyland but better…”. School was important because it led to a “respectable job”, that job being a doctor, a lawyer, or an engineer. Initially that was ok with Jason, but there was something missing. He didn't feel quite whole. Regardless, he moved forward on the "right" path and attended the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He assumed his problems would be solved but eventually realized that he still wasn't fulfilled. That same emptiness remained even as he began making 6 figures at Bain and Company. The turning point of Jason's life began on his 22nd birthday when the Haiti earthquake taught him the importance of empathy. Committed to do something, he decided to film himself bussing at a New York subway station. Jason would make a video that accumulated 10,000 views in a single week and raised hundreds for the cause. Inspired, he decided to pursue his passion for filmmaking, quit his job, and create Jubilee Media which seeks to demonstrate the common ground between people and foster empathy in a divided world. https://www.jubileemedia.com/ Subscribe to our Newsletter! https://findingfounders.co/subscribe Website: findingfounders.co Follow Sam: https://www.instagram.com/samueldonner/ Follow Finding Founders IG: https://www.instagram.com/findingfounderspodcast/ --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/finding-founders/support

Living for empathy and human good is a resilient vision and one that is worthy of pursuit.Today we're visiting Marisa Hamamoto, Marisa is a leader, artist, speaker and founder of Infinite Flow. Infinite Flow aims to empower people through dance and storytelling. Having survived a stroke, multiple sexual assaults, body shaming, PTSD, and discrimination as an Asian American, Marisa developed deep empathy towards those who are excluded. This eventually led her to start Infinite Flow in 2015 which has become an award-winning Los Angeles-based nonprofit and professional dance company that employs dancers with and without disabilities. Her mission is to use dance as a catalyst to dismantle biases and promote inclusion in greater society. 61 million adults in the United States live with a disability. 1 in 4 adults in the United States has some type of disability. These come with various barriers that may hinder their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others.Disability inclusion is still a huge issue we need to address. Many people experiencing a disability in the United States believe the ‘Americans With Disabilities Act' needs a recalibration as it currently only offers minimum support and has barely any official enforcement. Inclusive private Organisations and initiatives are also key and Marisa Is Truly leading the way with what she is modeling with Infinite Flow

Many media companies have set out to be the Disney of X. But Jubilee Media seems to have carved out a niche for itself by aiming to become the “Disney for empathy,” according to the media company's founder and CEO Jason Y. Lee. Empathy is a pretty unusual content category, though, of which Jubilee Media is well aware. “A lot of people have trouble putting us into a particular category or box. And we see that as a tremendous whitespace that we want to kind of own and grow into,” Lee said in the latest episode of the Digiday Podcast.. Jubilee's empathetic bailiwick also seems to present a timely opportunity for the media company to attract audiences in search of some positivity amid all the day-to-day gloom and doom.  “It's no coincidence that Jubilee really starts picking up momentum because people are hungry [for empathetic content]. That's what we need, right? We want to connect with each other,” said Mike Su, director of Snap's accelerator program Yellow and an individual investor in Jubilee Media, who joined Lee in the episode.

About this episode Jason Y Lee is the founder of Jubilee Media, which launched in 2010 with a goal of creating a movement of empathy and connection. While most media brands play for entertainment and devisiveness, Jubilee is desiring to swim against the current for human good. In this episode, Jason shares openly and honestly about the personal journey he went through to understand what it was that he knew he was supposed to be doing with his life. He had an incredible job working for Bain Capital at the time, and his original co-founder of his first venture, that preceded Jubilee Media, was his brother who was a staffer for President Obama. To make a career decision like leaving those positions, he had to be all-in on his pursuit and purpose. Yet like so many entrepreneurs you never really learn how all-in you are, until it all starts unraveling, and Jason shares all of it in this episode. In this episode, you'll hear: Jason was born and raised in America by his Korean parents who immigrated to America. His partners pushed his brother and himself into traditional careers to provide job security for when they were older. Jason shares how he stumbled into entrepreneurship while he was working as a consultant at Bain Capital. They were being shown pictures of the disastrous earthquake in Haiti. Jason wanted to raise money as quickly as possible so went and busked. This sparked his idea of creating video content to raise awareness and the Jubilee Project was launched as a non-profit organization. Jason explains how he convinced his brother to leave his job, as a staffer for President Obama, to cofound Jubilee Project with another friend who dropped out of Harvard to join as well. This path lasted for a few years before it all unravelled. Jason shares his journey and process he went through to figure out a path forward after his cofounders left. Jason's story is one of understanding your personal value proposition and clarity of mission. Most founders truly do believe they are fully dedicated to their mission, until it all "hits the fan". It is in that moment you will see who is "in it to win it" Resources from this episode Join Grindology: https://grindology.com/ Ember Giveaway: https://www.thestartupstory.co/ember ExpressVPN: Get 3 Months Free → https://www.expressvpn.com/startupstory Get Emails: https://app.getemails.com/referrals/newaccount?ref=R18HWW5 The Startup Story Inner Circle: https://www.thestartupstory.co/vip The Startup Story on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/thestartupstory The Startup Story is now on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/jamesmckinney The Startup Story on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thestartupstory Jubilee Media: https://www.jubileemedia.com/ Jubilee Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJjSDX-jUChzOEyok9XYRJQ Jubilee's Tribeca Submission: https://tribecafilm.com/films/accepted-2021 Share the podcast The Startup Story community has been so incredible sharing our podcast with others, and we thank you! So many of us are struggling right now - whether we’re juggling school aged children while working at home or leading people who are feeling marginalized, emotionally drained, or lacking in purpose. On today’s show, I talk with experienced HR practitioner Maria Cordova about how leaders can successfully navigate these stressful times with empathy and boldness to create better employee experiences and optimized business performance.  We dive into: [6:00] Maria’s journey into Human Resources [10:00] How she uses pain points and gaps to identify business needs [13:45] The necessary pivots that businesses are making during Covid and how HR solutions can help navigate these shifts [18:00] What is needed in leadership right now to see successful results and engaged employees [19:15] How exposed social and racial inequities are affecting business [20:35] What leaders should be thinking about MOST right now [24:25] Why leaders need to level up their communication skills and have more uncomfortable conversations [26:00] How one-on-one conversations with employees need to change during Covid and a practical way you can be approaching them to achieve positive, successful outcomes [28:20] Maria’s recommendations for leaders who want to be better in the area of supporting BIPOC and other marginalized employees  [30:00] The MOST IMPORTANT responsibility we have as leaders when dealing with issues of social and racial inequity [31:45] Distinguishing the difference between sympathy and empathy and how important the principle of leading with empathy can be for your business [35:30] One way to shift how you provide feedback that can help motivate your employees [39:05] Creative ways to address professional development during a time where employees are feeling stagnant [41:40] The MOST IMPORTANT thing you can be doing as a leader if you are feeling worn down  [44:30] What a world without empathy looks like (hint: it’s not pretty!) Why is empathy so important in the discussion of masculinity? For one, it's important to understand but also interpret back another person's feelings. But it also allows you to walk in their shoes and understand how they feel. For Jason, Empathy is at the core of the work he does with Jubilee Media as the CEO. Jubilee is a digital media company that believes in the power of empathy for human good. With over 5 million subscribers, Jubilee is creating a global movement. Some of the topics we discuss on this week's episode include why Jubilee discusses the topic of masculinity so much, the importance of empathy in the masculine journey, how we've created unhealthy systems of manhood and dating, and the grey area in conversations about consent. They are one of the inspirations behind me starting this podcast in the first place, and they've done many many many videos talking about masculinity which I have linked bellow. Has this lockdown meant that you are spending time with different people?Who are you speaking to on a daily basis? Who are you face-timing with regularly and who are you having group calls with?
