Lost books include apocryphal literature from heretics, grifters, and entrapment-dodging translators, but there's also genuine works that were abridged or edited later, allowing the originals to disappear in the fog of disuse. Some books are lost because their religious traditions and communities have died out or were pushed underground, and other books are the stuff of legend, and may never have really existed....After our discussion of how the various canons were established, we MUST discuss what was left on the cutting room floor.In addition to the more popular Deuterocanonical "Apocrypha" of the Alexandrian Greek Judeo-Christian tradition, there's a vast collection of other Jewish apocryphal and pseudepigraphical writings, and more from Christian writers. Some of our favorites are the Book of Jubilees, and the Testament of Job, and the Christian Infancy Gospels.There is also material that was once listed with--and within--sacred texts that has been lost, including several Hebrew prophetic books mentioned in the Tanakh, and several lost apostolic letters mentioned in the New Testament canon. They conceived of the Kingdom as a new age we enter at the coming of Christ. Early on, going to heaven was considered a serious heresy. Over time, a relatively small number of influential Christians began arguing against the Kingdom. They considered living on a mutable earth forever in physical bodies to be too crude and out of touch with their cosmology. They criticized believers in the Kingdom for seeking bodily pleasures like eating fine food, drinking alcohol, and having intercourse. They rejected the literal interpretation of Kingdom prophecies found throughout scripture as a Jewish way to understand. Although Augustine had believed in the Kingdom at one point, his ultimate rejection of it in favor of heaven-at-death settled the matter for the Roman Catholic Church of the Middle Ages. „Rozumím tomu, když někdo řekne, že z náboženských, nebo morálních důvodů, to nechce, ale argument, že zbraně prodlužují válku, je úplně debilní,“ říká spoluautor iniciativy Dárek pro Putina Martin Ondráček s tím, že opovrhovat zbraněmi lze do té doby, dokud nejsou potřeba. A válka na Ukrajině jasně dokazuje, že tam potřeba jsou. Jen máloco je podle něj v životě tak černobílé jako fakt, že ruští vojáci nemají na ukrajinském území co dělat. Pokud bychom jejich invazi nečinně přihlíželi, tak dosáhneme toho, že Rus bude stát na hranicích se Slovenskem. „Bude naboostovaný, že jeho příšerná armáda zválcovala celý stát a za pět let je máme v Brně,“ má jasno a plánuje sbírku na nákup další vojenské techniky.

Quae breuitas hodie nobis argumento uisa est ut auctor quamuis res tenuis esset tamen existimaret aliquid dignum in ea fuisse quod inter ampliora referret. Namque mature narrat Aristidem ciuem Atheniensem fuisse necnon Themistocli aequalem quocum de principatu contenderet. Inde facile coniectare possumus uitas utriusque inter se respondere. Ast pauca primum de uiro ipso dicamus ut Nepos eum descripsit: scriptor enim bis indicauit Aristidem insigni abstinentiā fuisse. Qua mentione Nepos uitam Aristidis concludit eāque illustrat qua ratione duo uiri Athenienses uirtibus diuersis praediti pariterque innocentes eandem poenam subierint. Ex hac ratione profecto materia secundi argumenti hauritur. Etenim Cornelius Nepos cum in primo capitulo de aemulatione Themistoclis Aristidisque loquitur, uirtutes utriusque in unam iuncturam sic comprehendit: "In his autem cognitum est quanto antestaret eloquentia innocentiae." Inde nos non effugit hic Themistoclen eloquentiā populum concitasse ut Aristiden innocentem ostracismo damnaret, illic eundem Themistoclen quamquam et innocentem et pariter dicendi peritum multis post annis uicissim ab multitudine oppressum exilio decem annorum damnatum esse. Etenim Cicero ipse in suâ Republicâ nobis Scipionem prodidit eundemque suas partes agentem. Nam Scipio nullam aliam opinionem exponit nisi Ciceronis ipsius ut illo loco quem iam recitabo : « Peto a uobis ut me sic audiatis : neque ut omnino expertem Graecarum rerum, neque ut eas nostris in hoc praesertim genere anteponentem ». Hoc sumpsi e capitulo tricesimo sexto. Hoc operis, personae, omnes nobilite Romanâ generatae, ad Laelium congrediuntur Ferias Latinas celebratum. Scipio qui propter res domi et militiae gestas aestimatione summâ fruitur, a ceteris sententiam rogatus, consentit ut explicet qualis status rei publicae sibi optimus esse uideatur. Haec operis pars igitur quae argumento ipsi praecedit, in primo libro posita, locum prooemii tenet. Equidem profecto suspicor illud « expertes litterarum Graecarum » Cornelii Nepotis huic « expertem Graecarum rerum » Ciceronis respondere, quamuis incertum sit utrum alteri responderit. Ast siquidem non audeo ex uno loco suspicionem in sententiam informare, tamen aliud nactus sum quod opinionem meam corroboraret. Namque etsi nonnullae uitae Cornelii Nepotis an nos non peruenerunt, tamen eae quas conseruauimus, ita se habent ut prima de Miltiade secunda de Themistocle tractarint. Hunc nominum ordinem nostrâ interest inspicere cui M. Tullius Cicero in Republicâ denuo respondere uidetur. Hic libri primi capitulum quintum sparsim recito : « Hinc enim et illa apud Graecos exempla, Miltiadem uictorem domitoremque Persarum, (…) uitam ex hostium telis seruatam in ciuium uinclis profudisse et Themistoclem patria quam liberasset pulsum (…) in barbariae sinus confugisse. » Nos effugere nequit eundem nominum ordinem a Cicerone adhibitum esse quam apud Cornelium Nepotem. Si ad haec addimus quod apud utrumque non modo de statu rerum publicarum sed etiam de similitudinibus differentiisque inter Graecos et Romanos agitur, equidem hoc magis suspicor uitas Cornelii Ciceronisque Rempublicam aliquatenus ex intimitate utriusque scriptoris materiam argumentaque communia hausisse. Saluete amici amicae uosque omnes qui Latinitati hodiernae fauetis. Illud erit soliloquium e Guiana. Reginaldus loquor. Hodie plura de Cornelio Nepote dicam cuius uitam Miltiadis propius tractabimus. Sicut in pristinis emissionibus explicaui, cum nuper opera Cornelii Nepotis denuo legere constitui, sine morâ animaduerti multa mentione digna uersari apud eum scriptorem quem litterati huius aetatis interdum sententiâ meâ paululum neglexerunt. Hic iam, ni fallor, actum est quomodo personae per uitas excellentium imperatorum inter se responderent ac quo pacto scriptor in eiusdem operis praefatione documentis exemplisque Graecis usus esset ut Romanos ex contrariis figuraret. Ego quidem hodie uobis de uita Miltiadis locuturus sum. Namque Miltiades ciuis Atheniensis fuit, loco nobili generatus modestiâque insignis. Cum Athenienses colonos Chersonesum mittere uellent ac dubitarent quem eis praeficerent quoniam Thraeces ferôces illam regionem tenebant, ferunt ipsam Pythiam Miltiadem designasse. Itaque Chersonesum missus effecit ut colonia cui deis suadentibus ab Atheniensibus praefectus erat, ibi floreret. Nam ut locum Nepotis récitem, « Ibi breui témpore barbarorum copiis disiectis, totâ regione, quam petierat, potîtus, loca castellis idonea communiit, multitudinem, quam secum duxerat, in agris collocauit crebrisque excursionibus locupletauit ». Haud procul, Nepos demonstrat Miltiadem quippe cum rector probus fuisset, in colonia Chersoneso diu permansisse instar regis quamuis accurate Athenis officia praestaret. Recito : « Summa aequitate res constituit atque ipse ibidem manere decreuit. Erat enim inter eos dignitate regiâ, quamquam carebat nomine, neque id magis imperio quam iustitiâ consecûtus. Quin etiam insulas quoque, ut scripsit auctor, « insulas » igitur « quae Cyclàdes nominantur, sub Atheniensium redêgit potestatem ». Idem multas alioquin res ab Miltiade gestas narrat easque tanto memoriâ digniores quod effectae sunt cum Darius, rex Persarum, bellum in Eurôpam intulit. Miltiadis enim operâ Athenienses decémplicem numerum hostium profligauerunt, et, ut denuo scriptorem citem, adeo eos perterruerunt ut Persae non castra, sed naues petierint. Postea, bello confecto, cum insulae Graecae superessent quae bârbaris opem tulerant, Miltiades noster cum classe septuaginta nauium missus est ut eas sub dicionem Atheniensium siue ui siue consilio redigeret. At cum Parii ad insulam quae Paros uocatur, Miltiadem illusisset atque is credidisset classem regiam cum Pariis fore ut oppugnaret, tergum uertere maluit ne ciuitas cladem ingentem acciperet. Haec fuit causa cur Athenas reuersus proditionis accusaretur quod, ut Cornelius Nepos crimen exponit, « cum Parum expugnare posset, a rege corruptus infectis rebus discessisset. » Causa nempe cognita est, neque Miltiades capitis damnatus est, sed pecuniâ multatus. Quae mulcta aestimata est quinquaginta talentorum, uel quantus sumptus factus erat ad totam classem construendam. Miltiades uero qui uir probissimus erat, tantam pecuniae summam soluere non potuit. Itaque in uincula publica coniectus in carcere mortuus est. Attamen Cornelium Nepotem non effûgit hoc crimen non ueram fuisse causam cur Miltiadi tanta poena danda foret. Uobis de hac re nonnullos locos sparsos recitabo inter se contextos : « Athenienses propter Pisistrati tyrannìdem, quae paucis annis ante fuerat, nimiam ciuium suorum potentiam extimescebant. Miltiades non iam uidebatur posse esse priuatus. Namque omnes autem et dicuntur et habentur tyranni, qui potestate sunt perpetua in ea ciuitate quae libertate usa est. Postremo Nepos sic concludit : « Haec populus respiciens maluit illum innoxium plecti quam se diutius esse in timore. » Non dubium est quin innòcens Miltiades fuerit : ille enim non modo Atheniensium iussu diu coloniae Chersoneso praefuerat, sed etiam Athenis rerum potiri minime studebat. Quia res domi et militiae gerere callebat, Atheniensibus, cupidis libertatis seruandae, placuit Miltiadem damnare quod democratiam periclitari posset, uel ut rectius dicam, propterea quod et sciret et ualeret rerum potiri etiamsi minime concupiuisset. In hac uitâ igitur Cornelius Nepos nobis demonstrat quantum periculum in democratiâ Atheniensium infuerit, sicut in omni re publicâ liberâ, quotienscumque populus, tanquam anticipatione fretus, prudentiâ abutitur ac consentit iura priuatorum restringere quasi incolumitatem rei publicae tueretur quamquam nullum facinus perpetratum esset. Siquidem crimen probari non potest, rei tamen facile accusantur alterius criminis ut iudices instrumenta non iustitiae sed regiminis esse uideantur. Nonne hoc paradoxon quo libertas ciuium minuitur ipsius libertatis seruandae causâ, uitia illustrat quibus ciuitates nostrae nuper periculis magnis sollicitatae labôrant ? Num operae pretium est pro democratia omniumque salute iniuste unum hominem condemnare uel innocentem ? Nunc peruenimus ad finem huius emissionis. Gratias uobis ago. Tunc explicaui cur mihi prodesset eum scriptorem legere. Nuper enim opera omnia eius oculis triui, nec retineri possum concludere multa mentione digna ubique in his abundare. Itaque hodie uelim uobis nonnulla tradere de praefatione eius libri in quo Cornelius tractat de excellentibus imperatoribus. Hoc enim opus Nepos Âttico, sibi amicissimo, dedicauit. Dum initium facit, praefatur usus Graecorum non esse iudicandos ex consuetudinibus Romanorum, sed ex suis moribus maiorum. Deinde paucis exemplis illustrat quantum uterque populus utrumque tempus inter se dîfferant. Dum haec facit, non solum de Graecia loquitur, sed mores Romanorum ingeniose depingit ut figurae Romanorum ex contrariis Graecorum prodeant uel, ut ita dicam, e forma figlinâ appareant. Ad haec illustranda uobis eius praefationis locos iam prodam quattuor. Primum Cimonem citat de quo locum illum uobis tradam : « Neque enim Cimoni fuit turpe, Atheniensium summo uiro, sororem germanam habere in matrimonio, quippe cum ciues eius eodem uterentur instituto. » Etenim Nepos indubittae cum Atheniensibus fas esset germanas uxores ducere, eodem têmpore mêmorat matrimonia eius farinae Romae pro incestis haberi. Haud procul addit quod « laudi in Creta ducitur adulescentulis quam plurimos habuisse amatores ». Cornelius Nepos dum haec dicit, item significat corpora liberorum Romanorum sacra esse. Quod pro côgnito habemus siquidem pueri Romani usque ad togas uirîles amulêta in bullis gerebant. His signis indicabant eos tangere nefas esse. Praeterea, ut idem alio loco declarauit, quamuis laudabile Graecis fuerit in scaenam prodire, tamen Romani non sine macula morali talia faciunt. Namque scribit : « Quae omnia apud nos partim infamia partim humilia atque ab honestate remota ponuntur. » Postremo, id quod equidem potissimum existimo, Cornelius Nepos cum de mulieribus in ciuitate agitur, subito rationem inuertit concinnandi exempla. Sic exclamat : « Quem enim Romanorum pudet uxorem ducere in conuiuium ? » Dein sîmili utitur interrogatione oratoriâ et demonstrat matronas apud Romanos primum locum tenere ac in celebritate uersari. Postea tandem incidit sermo in gynaeconîtides ubi feminae Graecae retinebantur. Haud dubium est quin haec omnia exempla Romanis conspicua fuerint. Itaque nonne nostrâ interest cur Cornelius Nepos locos id genus memorauerit ? Ipse elementum responsi adfert cum ait homines errare si tantum pro recto habeant quod moribus ipsorum conueniat. Sic nullum aliud praeceptum profitetur quam illud recentius « cuius regio eius religio », uel principium relatiuismi nostri. At quamquam inter aetates et ciuitates distinguit, tamen non curat ut alias res ab aliis semoueat. Quantum enim existimare possum, non credo Cornelium Nepotem tot taliaque exempla gratuito citauisse. Dum contraria inter Romanos et Graecos expônit, meâ sententiâ, Romanos hortatur ut non solum Graecos more Graeco considerent, sed etiam uice uersa mores suos respiciant atque inquirant cur res Romanae apud eos ita se habeant.   Ok, seriously, someone needs to step up. Who can sort this mess out? What about the son of Majorians general, the nephew of one of the best generals of the age, the nephew of Leo, supported by Zeno and the east, a man with links to Syagrius and the Friendly Franks, a man who has been running Dalmatia very well for the last couple of years. He sounds good!  Time for him to stand in the surf and demand the tide retreat...
