If you listened to last week's interview with Marisa Wheeling Ceisluk, you heard us talking about the power of finding your voice and how it can change your life. I started thinking, but what if someone doesn't even know what their voice is and needs to find it? It's one thing to see the self-empowerment of finding a voice, and another to find your unique voice and use it.Sadly, I didn't have a voice until 4 years ago, when I 48. I didn't know how to speak my truth. To be honest, I wasn't even sure what my reality was half of the time. I certainly didn't think my voice would make any difference. Basically, I had no confidence in myself. Ultimately, I felt like I was a victim of my marriage. For instance, I would defer to my husband because I didn't think what I felt or thought was critical, and I made up in my mind that if we disagreed, it would cause a conflict, and I avoided that at all cost. Then, I would be angry with myself and resentful with him even though I had given up my power for not speaking my mind. I did this with my friends and my parents as well. I felt totally powerless and frustrated all the time. Ladies here is a truth for you today: we determine our destiny. In the words of Buddha, "No one saves us but ourselves. No one can, and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path." So Here are Four Ways to Find Your Voice on your Path to Self-Empowerment. First, find strong, healthy women who are using their voice and connect where you can. I began looking around in my circle for women like this. I developed relationships with them. I had lunch with them. I talked on the phone with them. I watched and listened to how they were dealing with things in their lives. I asked questions about how they would handle some of the problems I was having. I also started following amazing women I looked up to on social media. I read their blogs, posts, and books. I even listened to podcasts of strong women. I began to emulate these women to find my voice. Second, determine where in your marriage you are holding back. Here are just a few examples and they are not an exhaustive list by any means. Are you trying to live up to your husband's expectations for you? Are you carrying the load of the household without asking for his help? Are you accepting that your husband is disengaged or emotionally distant and going your separate ways? Are you having obligatory sex? Maybe you are allowing disrespect from your husband. I suggest you take the time to make a list. This will help you examine where you are and get you started. It is a gorgeous July morning. I have finished watering my newly planted grass seed and now it is time to focus on my business. I am finally feeling like my life is in balance. This was a reflection on life that I had several years ago. It didn’t mean that my life wasn’t chaotic, but I was feeling satisfied with the time and energy that I was spending on the various aspects of my life. Sometimes my ‘balance’ lasts for a long time, other times, that balance is fleeting. Balance to me, does not mean equal. Balance means satisfaction. So Here are today’s Hot Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating Life Balance Month: My First Strategy is the belief that I have a purpose in this world and that this world has a purpose. Second, is being comfortable with who I am. I am not superhuman. I try my best to take care of myself. My family and my business need me to function. Third, I enjoy the little things and look for the awesome. In my reflection above, my day started outside, watering and weeding. For me, this is nature at its most glorious and it helps to ground and center me. Each day I experience different challenges, but these beliefs keep me satisfied with where I am going. How do you create more satisfaction and balance in your life? If you like today’s wellness tips, let me know. How we organize our self can either help or hinder us in the way that we deal with stress. Clutter can add more chaos. We would all love a magic lamp or a fairy godmother to make our dreams come true. But in their absence, it is up to us to make our dreams come true. This requires effort on our part. Not just wishful thinking, but hard work and intention. So Here are today’s Hot Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating Make Your Dreams Come True Day: Create your dream list. Write it down. Put it into pictures. Make a Dream Board. This makes it real and more likely to come true than if your dreams stay locked up inside your head. Decide what steps or actions you need to take to make these dreams come true. Watch out for negative self-talk, and fears that can sabotage you before you even start. Bronnie Ware is an Australian nurse who spent several years working in palliative care, recording her patient’s epiphanies. Here were the top five wishes of those patients: The wish that they had the courage to live a life true to them self, not the life others expected of them. The wish that they had not worked so hard. The wish that they had the courage to express their feelings. The wish that they had stayed in touch with their friends. The wish that they had let them self be happier. So what are YOU going to do TODAY to move closer to making your dreams a reality? Looking for more tips to build your resiliency? Everyone hates change. So many people I know believe that this statement is true. However, the truth be known, people don’t really hate change, they may just dislike the process of changing. I know that people will only change when the behaviours that they have been using stops getting them the results that they want. With the start of the new year, many of us have taken the time to reflect on the past year’s events or our life. We may have set some goals for the upcoming year based on these reflections. When we set our goals for the future and aim to be more on purpose with who we want to be, we need to see and feel the past as uncomfortable and realize that life requires change. So Here are today’s Hot Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating Living On Purpose Month: Know Your Why. To reach your goals, you need to identify the reason for the change in the first place. Sometimes it helps to write this ‘why’ down and keep it available, because sometimes when we are in the midst of moving forward and the path becomes difficult, we may forget the reason for the change and give up on it, before we get through it. Remember that change is not bad, and we don’t need to hate it. Whether the change you are making is a New Year’s Resolution or a life change to live more on purpose, always be kind to yourself. Have you worn a milk moustache today? January 11th is milk day, the anniversary of milk being first delivered in glass bottles. I grew up on a dairy farm. Milk was a part of every meal. I can still remember my dad skimming the cream off the milk for his cereal and the first time I stayed with my aunt who ‘bought’ her milk from the store, and thinking that it was so watery. Nothing at all, like what I was used to. Even after 7000 years of drinking it, milk is still very controversial. Many say we need it for bone growth, but there are those who say we shouldn’t drink it, as it can increase our risk for certain diseases. So Here are today’s Hot Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating Milk Day: Watch what you drink. Add more water and milk to your diet as opposed to pop and other sugary drinks. Studies show that kids and adults who drink milk are less likely to consume sugary drinks which add no nutritional value to their diet. If you are having trouble sleeping, try a cup of warm milk. The chemicals in milk, along with the warmth of the drink, can help to produce that sleepy feeling. So to honour my dad and brother, here is a little milk day humour….. Q: What did the farmer call the cow that had no milk? A: An udder failure. Don’t forget that you can find more tips for promoting health, by checking out my Live Smart blog at worksmartlivesmart.com
I have been taking karate for quite a few years now. I’m a second-degree black belt, so not quite a beginner. It takes lots of hard practice to get this far…yet I am pretty sure that I would still have a great deal of trouble using it against an attacker, especially one with any size behind them. Early in my university years and again when I was working within a college, I took a couple of basic self-defence courses. They did two things. They enhanced my awareness of the dangers and gave me ideas for options that I could use. They were definitely worthwhile. Fear is powerful. And so it should be. Fear keeps us on our toes. It warns us to not be in dangerous situations. Even the best karate move is not to be there when the attack comes in. So Here are today’s Hot Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating Personal Self-Defense Month Consider your answers to these questions. Do you know what to do if someone grabs you? If not, you may need to take a course on basic self-defence strategies Are you aware of your surroundings? Don’t become complacent, even in familiar situations. Are you confident in yourself and do you carry yourself in a confident way? Learn how to walk with confidence. This can be the difference of a potential attacker thinking that you are an easy target and them moving on to the next person. Take your personal safety seriously. Be prepared. Be Aware. Look like you know what you are doing. Want to find more strategies to coping with stress? Check out my website at worksmartlivesmart.com
Do you hold a grudge? January is the month of new resolutions. It is also the month to Get Over It. Whatever ‘It’ is. ‘It’ can be very destructive emotionally and physically. It is not to say that feeling hurt or angry is bad, but holding on to hurt and anger for a long time is. So Here are today’s Hot Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating Get Over It Month: Weigh the risks. Holding a grudge takes energy and has a negative impact on your health. It can keep you awake at night. It can cause excessive dread and worry and negatively impact your digestion. It can bring about Depression. Weigh out the risks of hanging on to that grudge or negative emotion and see if it really is worth the energy. Learn to accept what is. You may not hear an apology. The person may never admit their mistake but that shouldn’t be the goal in trying to get over something. Often hearing someone say sorry doesn’t make us feel better. Only you can change your perspective and focus, so start today and Get Over It. Looking for resources to build your resiliency? Check out my Live Smart blog at worksmartlivesmart.com

Are you and your family spending too much time as couch potatoes? Although this is Family Fit Lifestyle Month, healthy habits should be a lifelong journey. I recently asked my sons what life lessons they have they learned from me (risky question but I wanted to know). I was proud to hear some of things that they said. Both of them said that one of the important lessons was around eating right and exercising often. They said that it has helped them to be good athletes and to feel good. (So all that harping around eating their lunch and working hard at practise has paid off after all). They saw me involved in fitness activities even when I was not naturally good at them. And they saw me having fun anyways. So Here are today’s Hot Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating Family Fit Lifestyle Month: Reward participation in fitness activities. Be each other’s cheerleader. Have fun. Fitness shouldn’t be boring or feel like drudgery. If it does that you haven’t found the right activities. Some of us prefer activities that we can do alone. Some of us need the watchful eye of a coach. Others prefer team settings. Fitness activities should be something that we look forward to. This year, set a few goals for creating a healthier family. Having trouble returning to work on Mondays? Feel like you never really left? Struggling with the blahs’? Studies show that happiness at work may be the most important success factor for a modern workplace and that happy companies make more money! Your happiness at work is your responsibility. Not your boss’s, not your co-workers’ and not society’s. It’s Yours. However, if you are a boss or leader it is your responsibility to set a culture where it’s easy to be happy at work. Happiness at work doesn’t only come from the policies, strategies, plans or values. It comes from being able to do great work with great people. So Here are today’s Hot Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating Thank God It’s Monday: Decide to say, “Thank God it’s Monday”. Make sure that you set the intention to be grateful for the fact that you have a job and grateful for the fact that you get to demonstrate your talents to the world through your work. Smile – it is contagious. Just as negativity is contagious, so is being optimistic, fun and happy. How you show up in life and at work, matters! If you are just going through the motions, you will be shortchanging yourself and depleting your happiness. Looking for more tips to build your resiliency? I must have been sleeping. I missed the Festival of Sleep this morning. The celebration is an opportunity to sleep in, snooze, doze, nap, and catch 40 winks. However, I did doze off and I did go to bed early last night, so I guess that I unknowingly celebrated it anyway. The Festival of Sleep reminds us that we all could use a little more sleep. Before the light bulb was invented, we use to get on average 10 hours of sleep. Now many of us are lucky to get 6.5 hours of sleep per night. Yet, we know that we need 7-9 hours per night just to stay healthy. In fact, I think that we should celebrate the Festival of Sleep for two solid weeks – The week between Christmas and New Years and then the week after New Years. What a great way to end an old year and start a new year. So Here are today’s Hot Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating The National Festival Of Sleep: Obvious tip alert – Go to sleep. Watch for those things that interfere or prevent you from getting a good night’s sleep. If you are like the majority (65%) of the population who do not get the right kind or length of sleep, you need to find the right strategies to get a good night sleep. Go to bed at the same time and get up at the same time. Keep your room cool. Block outside noises. Watch the kinds of foods that you eat prior to bedtime. Don’t exercise right before bed. The pressure is on! Too much to do. No time to think. Be productive. Do more. Uncertain economy. Climate change. Make the right decision. Make it now. Your thoughts create your emotional and physical state. How you think and react at any given time determines the decisions or actions you take. Successful people realize that by transforming their thinking that they can master the essential skills for thriving in these turbulent times. So Here are today’s Hot Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating National Transform Your Thinking Month: Look at the decisions that you have made in the past. Have they been the best ones that you could have or should have made? If not, evaluate how you made those decisions and see if there is something that you need to work on. Do you have enough tools in your strategy tool belt to deal with the issues and challenges you are facing? Using the S-O-S Principle can help ensure that you deal with issues, stay healthy and are supported during stressful times. “This year, I am going to earn my CSP.” That is what I said several years ago at this time. And thankfully, I can say that after many hours of sweating it through, I received my Certified Speaking Professional designation in San Diego, California July 2007. For many of us, New Year’s Resolution Week is a time to reflect on the changes that we want and need, and in doing so we compile a list of resolutions. Unfortunately if our resolutions happen not to work out as we had hoped, we tend to put off trying again until the following year. So Here is today’s Hot Tip For Building Resiliency and Celebrating New Years Resolutions Week: Visualize It Many experts agree that the resolution itself is too often equated with the plan when it is only one part of the overall plan. One tip is to visualize the future. Identify and visualize what feelings will come about by you achieving your goal. Replay this image regularly. The more details the better! Everyday is a new challenge to live the way you intend to, according to your passions and purpose. Remember, it takes less effort to stay the same than it does to change. Most goals require stepping outside of your comfort zone and that is why many people give up. Looking for more ways to build your resiliency? On the last working day of the year, the office is quiet and you are prepared to take advantage of it to get caught up on your work. The phone rings. You sigh. Another stressful interruption. According to Fast Company the average office worker is interrupted and taken off task every 11 minutes. Even worse, they say that it takes basically that much time to refocus on the task at hand. Often, we end up compensating for interruptions by working faster and harder, which results in us experiencing more stress. We get frustrated, impatient, annoyed, angry, defeated. The key to avoid interruptions at work is to find productive ways to minimize and deal with them and keep our emotions in check. So Here are today’s Hot Tips For Building Resiliency and Dealing With No Interruptions Day: Plan for interruptions. Know the type of interruptions that you usually encounter and when they are most likely to occur. Limit the opportunities for people to distract you. If you need time to concentrate on a particular task, block it off in your schedule and let colleagues know that you are not available until a certain time. Turn off your phone and your email notifiers. Shut the door. Book a meeting room just for yourself. Watch for your own personal interrupters. A messy desk, hunger, thirst and curiosity all get in our own way of being as productive as we can. Organize yourself prior to starting your focused time, not during it. I am a chocoholic. I love milk chocolate. Creamy. Rich. Sweet. Delicious. It picks me up when I am down. Is this wrong? Not terribly. We all have comfort foods and mine is chocolate. I don’t eat it everyday. My addiction is quite mild most of the time. But there are days when I just have to give in. I have scavenged the cupboards looking for any type of chocolaty morsel. And when I do indulge, I try to do so with very little guilt, (which isn’t always possible). It’s About Moderation Contrary to popular belief, chocolate isn’t its own food group, but treats are not all bad. Moderation is the key. Eating healthy around the treats is also well advised. But I do like my chocolate and I am always glad that my Christmas stocking, is lovingly filled with….Chocolate. My boys use to wondered why Santa only brought mommy chocolate…I told them, it was because daddy wanted mommy to be happy so he wrote it in his letter to Santa to bring me a stocking full of chocolate. And Santa hasn’t let me down yet. So hats off to the Mayans and the Aztecs for creating the first chocolaty drink. So Here are today’s Hot Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating National Chocolate Day: I don’t have any, other than to indulge responsibly Looking for resources to build your resiliency? It is almost the last day of the year. This is the day that many news programs offer up a year in review. What happened that was newsworthy? Good, Bad and even the Ugly. This is a good time of year to do the same for our own personal life. What was great? What successes did you achieve? What challenges did you face? What didn’t go the way you would have liked. What lessons did you learn? All of these questions can help you to put life in perspective and help you to recognize the skills that you have developed that have aided you along the way. So Here are today’s Hot Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating the New Year ahead: Reviewing Your Life Allows You to Know Where You Are. If you don’t want to live this upcoming year exactly the same as your last year, you need to take stock of all that has happened. It is only when you stop and reflect, that you are able to find out, if what you do, is getting you the results you want. Ask yourself the question, What Am I Working Towards? If you are serious about living your ideal lifestyle, you must take stock of where you are and where you would like to be. Looking for more tips to build your resiliency? Are you overworked, over-scheduled and just plain stressed out? There is a quote that says, “Time is the most valuable coin in your life. You and you alone will determine how that coin will be spent. Be careful that you don’t let other people spend it for you.” So Here are today’s Hot Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating It’s About Time Week: Schedule downtime. At least once during the day, you should allow yourself the luxury of having a period of time to decompress. The simplest and easiest strategy to use is deep breathing. It can be done by anyone, anywhere and in any circumstance. Create off-work zones. Determine what times during the day are off-limits for working, including no e-mail, or text messages. By defining these zones such as at meal-time, bed-time and days off, we are creating the space for rejuvenation and connection. Learn to say no. Say no to things that are outside of your priority. Say no to working late, especially if it is self-imposed. Say no to extra activities if you are feeling stretched to thin. Saying no now, does not mean that it will be a no forever. When you feel like it is a priority and you have the time to dedicate to the activity without compromising yourself, then it is okay to say yes. Looking for more tips to build your resiliency? We can be a nation of entitled whiners. “It’s too cold.” “I am the only one around here who does anything.” “Blah, blah, blah” or should I say “whine, whine, whine.” Hunger, tiredness, boredom and feeling unwell are factors that can precipitate whining sessions at work, but some colleagues have learned from a very early age that whining gets them the attention that they are seeking. Whining has become second nature and their predominant way of communicating. Their behaviour is draining on relationships and it can poison a workplace. So Here are today’s Hot Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating National Whiner’s Day: If you catch yourself whining: Try moving from an attitude of entitlement to one of gratitude. It is hard to be whining when focused on the positive and being thankful. Focus on problem solving. It is okay to vent, but that venting must be followed by problem solving otherwise it is whining for whining’s sake. If you are going to confront a whiner: Understand that they are looking for attention, but give them attention for solving the issue, not for whining about the issue. Finally, minimize the amount of time that you spend with the whiner. They will zap your energy if you aren’t careful. Looking for resources to build your healthy workplace? Welcome back to the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning podcast, episode #101, where we will review highlights from the past 100 episodes, that began in June 2019, with a behind the scenes lens, where we will take a look at the results created from this podcast, with the goal to inspire listeners to not just implement the ideas offered in each episode, but to think about what Horacio Sanchez from EPISODE #74 reminded me this week, of “the impact possible when you have an idea, nurture it, and watch it grow.” (Horacio Sanchez, EPISODE #74[i]).My name is Andrea Samadi, and if you haven’t met me yet, I’m a former educator who created this podcast to bring the most current neuroscience research, along with high performing experts who have risen to the top of their field, with specific strategies or ideas that you can implement immediately, whether you are an educator, or working in the corporate space, to take your results to the next level. Before we get to the episode, and the highlights learned from our guests, I want to share some of the unexpected results that have come as a byproduct of this podcast to perhaps light a spark under anyone who might be thinking of new ways to create brand awareness, or market their business in 2021. If you have been thinking of ways that you can extend your voice, message and reach, I highly recommend this mode of delivery. I also want to thank everyone who has supported us with this mission, come on as a guest, or downloaded an episode. We wouldn’t exist without the guests who offer their time, expertise, and strategies designed to help our listeners (in over 132 countries) who tune in on a regular basis and take the ideas offered to make an impact locally in their schools, communities, businesses and workplaces. I appreciate the feedback and messages received via social media and email and look forward to the next 100 episodes. As long as there is still growth, I will continue to produce new episodes. So Here are 3 Lessons Learned Looking Back at the 100 Episodes.LESSON 1: WHEN THERE’S A NEED, CAN YOU PUT A SPIN ON IT?I saw a serious need in the area of social and emotional learning that was being implemented in schools around the country and the world, and many educators didn’t know the best way to begin their implementation. I thought it would be a good place to gather “best practices” from experts around the world to offer their ideas that we could all learn from and apply to our own lives. But I knew I needed a bigger idea than just a podcast about social emotional learning in our schools, or emotional intelligence training in our workplaces. Too many people were already doing this. But not that many people were teaching the basics of practical neuroscience as it relates to this topic. The idea to combine neuroscience and social/emotional learning came with the thought that “success in life, and in college and career specifically, relies on student’s cognitive, (the core skills your brain uses to think, read, remember, and pay attention) social and interpersonal skills, (including the ability to navigate through social situations, resolve conflicts, show respect towards others, self-advocate and learn how to work on a team with others) and emotional development (including the ability to recognize and manage one’s emotions, demonstrate empathy for others and cope with stress).” In the corporate world, these skills aren’t new, but they are “newly important” and of high urgency to develop in our future generations. I’ve mentioned this quote before but think it’s important enough to repeat. A recent survey showed that 58 percent of employers say college graduates aren’t adequately prepared for today’s workforce, and those employers noted a particular gap in social and emotional skills. This is where our goal with this podcast began—to close this gap by exploring six social and emotional learning competencies as a springboard for discussion and tie in how an understanding of our brain can facilitate these strategies. AHA! MOMENT with LESSON 1That’s really how I took the need, put a spin on it, and came up with the title Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning in 2016 (3 years before launching the podcast) when I first began presenting on this topic. This title drew the session on the introduction to practical neuroscience to fill up with standing room only, at the YRDSB Quest Conference, in Toronto, Canada. This was my first presentation on the topic, and I knew at that moment that there was a serious interest in this topic.Back then, I was working one on one with one of the leading neuroscience researchers in the country, Mark Robert Waldman, and he had just finished writing his book Neurowisdom: The New Brain Science of Money, Happiness and Success[ii], When he shared his research with me, I saw how practical neuroscience could help people to gain a deeper understanding of how to create change from the brain level and impact their social and emotional thinking and began to write the outline for the vision I saw. I also found Dr. Lori Desautels this year, who is now a good friend and supporter of our work. This was how we took a need and put a spin on it. The rest is history.LESSON 2: THINK IMPACT vs INCOME: GIVER’S GAINAfter the first few months of releasing episodes, I heard from so many people who wanted to know “how did you launch this idea,” and asked about some best practices as they began thinking of ways to replicate the results that inevitably come when you put in consistent daily effort that turns into weekly and then monthly effort until it’s no longer effort, but what you do every day, habitually. If you want to know if launching a podcast would work for you, message me and I can send you some ideas on how to get started, but my first tip would be that you should pick a topic that you love, something that you won’t mind putting in the time and effort to learn more about, as this is what you will be immersed in on a daily basis.I heard a few times “How do you make money with a podcast?” and that’s a great question and why I wanted the second lesson to focus on the impact you will have, not the income. When you have enough listeners, you can earn money from sponsorships and ads, but the key is to use the podcast as a tool to drive people to your programs and services. Doors will start to open for you in ways that you never imagined. I heard Max Lugavere (an American television personality and health and wellness writer) talking about these incredible types of results at about the 2-year mark of his podcast on Dhru Purohit’s Broken Brain Podcast[iii]. The income will come once you put your focus on service and helping others to achieve their goals. This is exactly the same concept as writing a book. Most people who dream of writing a book, think that it will take off like the Harry Potter Series, and they will be set, riding off into the sunset as a millionaire. The truth is that most authors never sell more than a few hundred copies of their books, and for it to become a best seller, it should reach 10,000 copies sold in a week. This is easier to do when selling larger volumes (like to schools or organizations that want your book) but not easy at all to do when selling books one at a time, relying on Amazon as your distribution service. Authors know that books, like a podcast, are just a tool to get your message out there. Since I have released content both ways, I can say from experience that putting your best content out into the world, for FREE, with the idea of helping people, will yield better results than thinking of selling your ideas before anyone even knows who you are.AHA! MOMENT with LESSON 2This podcast was actually originally going to be an educational course, written for a publisher, but a turn of events had me decide to release this content in the form of a podcast for FREE, to be used by anyone who needed these resources. What was interesting is that when I put a focus on the IMPACT I wanted to create, rather than the INCOME it would give me back in return, something magical happened. Max Lugavere mentioned it happened for him at the 2-year mark, and I would have to say it happened for me around the 100th episode mark after just a year and seven months. The opportunities came disguised as consistent, daily, effort and work.LESSON 3: MASTER PROLIFIC QUALITY OUTPUT (PQO).I heard this statement for years, until this experience made me finally understand it. Brendon Burchard, the author of the book High Performance Habits talks about how “High performers have mastered the art of prolific quality output (PQO). They produce more high-quality output than their peers over the long term, and that is how they become more effective, better known, more remembered. They aim their attention and consistent efforts toward PQO and minimize any distractions (including opportunities) that would steal them away from their craft” (Burchard, 2017[iv]). Over the years, I never really understood what PQO meant. I listened to Brendon explain it a few times, and he would give the example of “Beyonce, who puts out hit after hit, or Ralph Lauren who creates luxury and designer product after product, or even Seth Godin who creates blog post after blog post.” There’s also the WakeUpIt’sDayOne Blog who explains PQO as it relates to athletes as “the type of things you typically don’t see an immediate reward with or have to repeat on a daily basis. Think about Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Lebron James, Tom Brady – the greatest athletes of all time. When you research them and understand how they became who they are today, all you ever read is that they focused on the fundamental things that improved their overall physical and mental skills[v]” their PQO—and I would add consistently, on a daily basis.AHA! MOMENT with LESSON 3Then I thought, what is my PQO? What is my output? What am I creating day in and day out? I’ve always been creating content, but it hit me after I had been producing episodes consistently for a year, that my PQO was the podcast episodes. I had created a certain standard with each episode that included the fact that each one had to be my best effort. If I wasn’t ready to interview someone, or had not researched enough, I would not produce the episode until it hit that standard.I also saw the importance of creating a video interview where I could edit in images and text to explain what the person I was interviewing was talking about. Many times, the concepts discussed are difficult to understand with words alone, so this became another standard. The final standard was that each interview had to be produced and released either that same day, or no longer than 2 days after. Waiting too long in production destroys the momentum created by the interview, so this meant many times that editing went into the night and researching early morning and weekends. Many content producers outsource their video or audio editing and production, but to date, each of the episodes have been produced and edited by yours truly. We will see what happens with this over the next 100 episodes. If you want to make an impact that goes beyond what your mind can imagine, a global impact, you need to have mastered Prolific Quality Output. Do YOU know what YOUR PQO is?Now that we have looked at some of the results created from this podcast, that really were unexpected, this episode will take a closer look at some lessons learned from the speakers along the way, as they relate to the 6 social and emotional competencies and how we tied in a connection to practical neuroscience for improved productivity and results. After each interview, I brainstormed the most important points learned with my husband, since he is also in the field of education. He always asks “what did you learn from this speaker” and there’s always 2-5 AHA points that definitely surprised me. I love making connections between the speakers and mapping out what each one says to other episodes. We really are connected, and what one person says, connects to what someone else will say in a later episode. I’m always looking for ways to take knowledge and make it applicable for anyone who is willing to apply it and use it.Just a note: Even though I had a written outline for the podcast, it did take a turn towards health and wellness close to the end of 2020, which I think was important and necessary. I will pull out examples used from our speakers in the following areas:EXPERTS WHO:Demonstrate Practical Neuroscience to Improve ResultsDemonstrate the Social and Emotional Learning Competencies (Mindset, Self-Regulation, Self-Awareness, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Decision-Making).Explain SEL in the EDUCATIONAL SETTINGAre Involved with PHYSICAL HEALTH, WELLNESS AND NUTRITIONLESSONS LEARNED FROM PRACTICAL NEUROSCIENCETHE POWER IN LEARNING ABOUT HOW OUR AMAZING BRAINS WORK: This area is where I spent the most time on the podcast, making sure we had a variety of experts, many who are well known with their books and research, to make a case for the importance of learning the basics of neuroscience to improve our productivity and results.Whether it was tips from 15-year-old Chloe Amen on how you can “Change Your Brain and Change Your Grades,” neuroscientist Friederike Fabritius on ways to “Achieve Peak Performance,” Dr. John Medina on his “Brain Rules” or Dr. Lori Desautels on the power of implementing neuroscience in today’s schools, the one person who tied everything together was Dr. Mary Helen Immordino-Yang with her research that shows “The Brain Basis for Integrated Social, Emotional, and Academic Development.” Her work shows how emotions and social relationships drive learning, bringing the entire podcast full circle as Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning. I saw the importance of these 2 topics, and Mary Helen can prove why they are so important, with her work at the University of SCA in her Center for Affective Neuroscience, Development, Learning and Education (CANDLE LAB). We will continue to bring more lessons that tie practical neuroscience to social, emotional and academic development in our future episodes as this really is the future of education. What was interesting to note in this area was that EPISODE #68: Neuroscience of Personal Change with Stephen R Covey’s “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” was the #1 most downloaded EPISODE with over 1100 downloads, showing me that people want to make this connection linking neuroscience to success and of the POWER IN LEARNING ABOUT HOW OUR AMAZING BRAINS WORK.LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE 6 SEL COMPETENCIES SEL COMPETENCY: MINDSET“A great attitude does more than turn on the lights in our worlds, it seems to magically connect us to all sorts of serendipitous opportunities that were somehow absent before the change.” Earl Nightingale, author of Think and Grow Rich Frank Shankwitz, from EPISODE #40 has modeled what happens when you keep a good mental mindset, for the course of his life. So much so, that they made a movie about his life, called Wish Man, that is based on Frank’s life story (he was a motorcycle cop in Arizona who was haunted by the traumatic separation from his father when he was a boy. After surviving a near-fatal accident, he finds hope with a terminally ill boy, who reunites him with his father. To honor this boy, Frank creates the Make a Wish Foundation, and continues to live a life of honor every day. Nothing can tear this man down. Follow him on social media and you will see for yourself of the importance of a “great mental attitude.” SEL COMPETENCY: SELF-REGULATION with PERSISTENCE and PERSEVERANCE“Success has to do with deliberate practice. Practice must be focused, determined, and in the environment where there’s feedback.” Malcolm GladwellDr. John Dunlosky from EPISODE #37 started this topic off with his years of research that showed that “deliberate practice” was one of the most effective learning strategies, vs cramming for a test. We’ve all heard this and know that knowledge will be retained and recalled more efficiently when it’s learned over a period of time. Todd Woodcroft, the former assistant coach to the Winnipeg Jets, current Head Coach to the University of Vermont Catamounts[vi], from EPISODE #38 puts John Dunlosky’s theory into practice as he explained that the “daily grind in the NHL” begins with “hard work” being a baseline of what is expected of each player, and that to rise above this baseline, players must embrace certain daily habits, without complaining of the work, knowing that “things don’t get easier as you get better, they get harder” with the repetition of these important skills.Dalip Shekhawat further reinforced Dunlosky’s research with his interview detailing the preparation involved in climbing Mount Everest, and neuroscientist Stephanie Faye from EPISODE #39 shares why this spaced repetition is so important at the brain level when she explains how the neural pathways are formed with this daily, consistent practicing of skill. SEL COMPETENCY: SELF-AWARENESS with MENTAL HEALTH and WELL-BEING“When I discover who I am, I’ll be free.” Ralph EllisonMoving into the 3rd SEL competency, self-awareness, this was the area that received the most downloads. The second most downloaded episode was my interview with my mentor, Bob Proctor, that shares where this idea began over 20 years ago. The third most downloaded episode was my solo lesson with a deep dive into everything I learned working directly with Bob, in the seminar industry for 6 years. Many of the speakers interviewed in this area came from the connections made from these speakers that I met in the late 1990s. It was here that I first saw the power of these social and emotional learning skills with 12 young teens, who would inspire me to keep moving forward with this work. This section is full of speakers, leaders, entrepreneurs of all ages who have a vision, like I do, for change with our educational system.EPISODE #66 Bob Proctor #2 MOST DOWNLOADED EPISODE on “Social and Emotional Learning: Where it all Started for Andrea Samadi”EPISODE #67 “Expanding Your Awareness with a Deep Dive into the Most Important Concepts Learned from Bob Proctor Seminars” (Solo Lesson by Andrea Samadi)EPISODE #68 The Neuroscience of Personal Change with Stephen R. Covey’s “The 7 Habits of Highly Successful People” (Solo Lesson with Andrea Samadi)#1 MOST DOWNLOADED EPISODE with over 1100 downloads SOCIAL AWARENESS/RELATIONSHIPS/DECISION-MAKINGThese 3 SEL competencies are important with solo lessons for each topic. Greg Wolcott, the author of the book www.significant72.com was dominant in this area. I will mention an aha moment with his work in the next section.LESSONS LEARNED FROM EXPERTS IN SEL/EDUCATION TAKE ACTION, EVEN WHEN YOU AREN’T READY. My first guest speaker was my husband, Majid Samadi, who always is there to offer ideas, suggestions and support with all of my projects, so of course when I needed to interview someone to launch this idea, I asked him to be my first guest. If you go back to EPISODE #1 that covers “The Why Behind Launching an SEL or Emotional Intelligence Program in Your School or Workplace” you will hear me interview him on his thoughts, from the point of view of someone who spends most of his time, working in schools across the country, as the Regional Vice President of Sales for an Educational Publishing Company. This interview happened 5 minutes after he walked in the door after getting off a flight, I think from LA, and he put his suit jacket on my desk, and I handed him a sheet of questions and said “Answer these and talk into the mic.” I’m sure he had been working since early that morning, and it was well into the evening when we recorded this, but he did it, without rehearsing his answers, or spending time preparing. We launched the podcast when we weren’t 100% ready because if we didn’t, I’m sure I would still be spending my days planning. Take action, even when you aren’t ready.PAY ATTENTION TO EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE: SMALL DETAILS CAN LEAD TO BIG DISCOVERIES AND RELATIONSHIPS THAT LAST My second interview was with educator, Ron Hall, from Valley Day School (who I found from an article I saw through Linkedin, and reached out to him hoping he would say yes to being a guest on the show). He agreed, and we have remained in contact ever since. Something funny to mention is that I had just started using Zoom for these interviews, a year before everyone would be using Zoom, and I hadn’t mastered the audio yet. There was a setting on my end that I needed to fix, and finally figured it out, but I’ll never forget the stress of not being able to hear my first guest for a good 30 minutes (could have been longer) as he tried everything on his end to fix the audio, that we finally figured out was on my end. Once we figured it all out, Ron spoke about how he launched neuroscience into his school with one of his major influencers being an author and speaker named Horacio Sanchez. When I created the video for Ron’s interview, I added an image of Horacio as he explained his story. This became important a year later, when I was introduced to Horacio Sanchez from Corwin Press Publishers for Episode #74. With each person you meet, whether in your life, or work, it’s important to pay attention to small details that can lead to something important to you later on. Always develop and maintain relationships as you never know how that person could be of assistance to you, or you to them, at some point in the future. I’m forever grateful for Ron Hall being my first guest, for staying in touch with me, and for the introduction to Horacio Sanchez, who I’m working with now on another project. GRATEFUL FOR BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS THAT LAST.KEEP LEARNING AND DON’T GET IN YOUR OWN WAY: One of my early interviews was with Greg Wolcott, and assistant superintendent from Chicago, and the author the book Significant 72[vii]. I had been following Greg’s work since I heard him on an SEL webinar in 2016, where he explained how he was building relationships in schools across the country. Greg quickly became an incredible supporter of the podcast after our interview and referred me to many other guests. We became friends, and kept in touch as each episode was released, he would let me know how useful the information was for the educators he was working with, as he brainstormed the ways that the episodes were helping him. This gave me belief in the content, as I saw it being applied, and made me realize that it was crazy that I was nervous interviewing Greg, who would become an incredible support, leading me to step out of my own way, and into a path of greater opportunity down the line. Reminding me to KEEP LEARNING AND DON’T GET IN YOUR OWN WAY!LESSONS LEARNED FROM HEALTH/NUTRITIONWhen I launched this podcast, I had no idea I was going to even go in the direction of health, wellbeing and nutrition. It just happened. Health is my #1 value, and something I put an incredible amount of time towards, so it wasn’t a surprise to me that when the Pandemic hit our world, I saw the importance of interviewing people who were putting a focus on their physical health as well as their mental health and well-being.I’ve always stayed close to my trainer, Kelly Schmidt, from episode #51, but when I watched a documentary on the health staples that were shown to prevent Alzheimer’s Disease, I decided that I needed to expand what I knew in this area. I took the 5 health staples and began looking for people I could contact who were experts in each of these areas. I met Luke DePron on Linkedin, who connected me to Dr. Stickler, and Momo Vuyisich. I reached out to Shane Creado from Dr. Daniel Amen’s Clinics, leading us to get our brain scans, learn more about the importance of sleep and finally, reached out to Jason Wittrock on Instagram, after his videos had inspired me to make changes with my diet a few years back. This set of interviews led me to moderate Podbean’s Wellness Week with Dr. Carolyn Leaf and John Kim, who you bet I am working on getting on the podcast for 2021.I hope you have enjoyed this review of our first 100 EPISODES. Season 4: These 18 episodes (82-100) that begin to tie in health, and mental health into the understanding of our brain, productivity and results. The shift to health on this podcast became apparent when we started to see how important our brain health is for our overall results. CONTENT: Everything that we do starts at the brain level, and we dive deep into this with our 3-part episodes on “How a Brain Scan Changed My Life” with a look at what we can learn from looking at our brain using a SPECT image brain scan. The interviews of this season mix in the power of education with an understanding of health and wellness. Dr. Sarah McKay agreed with Dr. Shane Creado (from Season 3) that sleep is one of the most important health strategies we can implement. It became apparent that there were 5 health staples that emerged as so powerful they were showing an impact on Alzheimer’s Prevention, so this season became a deep dive into these top 5 health staples (daily exercise, getting good quality and quantity sleep, eating a healthy diet, optimizing our microbiome and intermittent fasting). If you are a business owner, you may be looking at the end of the year as the time to review your Business Plan. I don’t enjoy doing this and I find it stressful to sit down and review where I have been and where I would like to grow my business. But I know that this is a necessary task as an entrepreneur. Writing my business plan greatly improves my chances for success. So Here are today’s Hot Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating National Write A Business Plan Month: Keep it short. Your business plan should be a tool you use to run and grow your business. If it is too long, it becomes daunting, stressful, and relegated to the bottom of your to do list. The biggest part of the business plan and the most helpful part of my plan answers the questions of what am I actually selling, how am I solving a problem for my market, and why me and not my competition. Your customers are stressed about something and you are there to solve it. My customers are leaders who see that stress is negatively impacting the health, productivity and functioning within their team, and they need tools that they and their teams can use to manage their stress, promote positive mental health, and build overall resiliency. Whether you are a business owner or not, the end of the year is a great time to review where you have been and where you are going. Set your intentions for a bright year ahead and make decisions that take you along this path. Remember, If you like today’s wellness tips, let me know. You can leave me a review on amazon or through your #alexa app. Don’t forget that you can find more tips for coping with mental health issues, by checking out my Live Smart blog at worksmartlivesmart.com.

My goal for this episode is to give you a big picture roadmap for how to start a podcast. You give me 30 minutes of your time, I'll tell you everything I know about starting a podcast. This isn’t meant to be an exhaustive guide that covers everything you’ll need to know (that would take awhile longer and I'd like to keep this pretty short), but my hope is that it gives you enough information to help you start making progress on starting your own podcast. If you’re listening to this in a podcast app, I’d recommend pausing it and switching over to my YouTube video. I’ll be showing some screenshots and other visual aids that I think you’ll find helpful. Here's the link: https://youtu.be/4zfglqqHHtAI also plan to publish a more detailed version of this episode as an affordable downloadable PDF and video and checklist, so I’ll include a link to that in the episode notes as well whenever it’s ready.A Few Pieces of Advice Before We Get Started:Anyone Can Start a PodcastAnyone can start a podcast! Yes, even you!To do it well does cost some money and a fair amount of time and effort, but it’s not extremely expensive, and you don't need anyone's permission to do it.The hardest part (from what I've seen) is growing an audience and getting people to listen to your podcast and share it with other people.People probably aren't going to care about your opinionA common mistake I see a lot of people make is starting a show where they just talk about whatever random subject they feel like talking about. It can be fun to do that for awhile, but it’ll be hard to convince strangers to listen to you unless you're already known for something else.Everyone has an opinion, and most strangers probably aren't going to be interested in hearing yours. To stand out, you’ll need to figure out how to provide something valuable, useful, or interesting to them.Aim to make your show entertaining, educational, or inspirational. If you can make it be all three, even better. If you don’t feel like you have anything important or interesting to say, it’s ok to put off podcasting for awhile. Focus instead of becoming an interesting, experienced person who can talk about a topic or tell stories in a way that makes people notice and pay attention.Don't give up when the going gets tough. You’re going to encounter road blocks and get stuck sometimes. There are answers to every question out there on the internet in blog posts, YouTube videos, books, podcasts, etc.Be patient and learn to enjoy the process of learning. Don’t get frustrated if you can’t accomplish a task right away.Podcasting is a marathon, not a sprint.Success comes to those who stick with it for a long time, so don’t give up if you don’t achieve all your goals right away. Stay focused, keep working, keep iterating and getting better. If you have questions, please feel free to send them to me, or you can find more information out there on the internet if you search. The Ultimate Goal: End up with an awesome podcast you loveMy goal with this episode and show is to help you end up with a podcast you’re proud of and that other people love, listen to, and share with their friends. One of the best ways to do this is to learn from other people who have already created podcasts that people love. This is why I recommend checking out the top shows in Apple Podcasts and Spotify for inspiration. Pay close attention to their podcast cover artwork and their show descriptions. Look for shows that are similar to the show you want to make. Learn from them, get inspired by them.4 Key Parts to PodcastingThere are four main parts of making a great podcast. They are: 1. Planning & Pre-Production 2. Recording & Production 3. Editing & Post-Production 4. Launching & PromotingLet's go through each of these steps in more detail.1: Pre-Production / Planning the ShowThe Goal: Come up a title, theme, short description, branding/visual style, and format for your show, and choose a time in your schedule to work on it.The first step is to decide:What your show is going to be called (the title)What it's going to be about (the theme)What your branding or visual style is going to be (the look of your artwork)What the format is going to be (Interviews? Fiction / Story telling?)When you're going to work on it (In the mornings before work? In the evenings after work? Weekends?)The Title: Check Apple Podcasts and social media to make sure the title you want isn’t already taken. The Theme/Format: Will you do interviews? Chat with a friend about a new topic every week? Tell a story in a narrative style? Do something weird and bizarre? There’s no rules here, so you have freedom to create the kind of show that you want. I’m guessing you have a few ideas based on shows you already listen to and enjoy. Make a show you’d love to listen to, and have fun!The Branding/Visual Style: Eventually you’ll need to create or hire someone to create cover art for your show. Your podcast cover art needs to be a square image, 3000x3000 pixels, a JPG or PNG file format. The Schedule: Decide what your recording and publishing schedule will be. Can you produce and publish new episodes every week? Every two weeks? Want to record a season of 12 episodes all at once and then release them? You’ll want to block off some time on your calendar to work on producing new episodes, but also time to promote your show and episodes and invest in your existing listeners and also on getting new listeners. (Podcasting can take a lot of time, so give yourself more time than you expect when you're just starting out.)Don’t worry about getting it perfect right away!Don’t worry about getting everything perfect, just make a plan and keep making progress. You can always change things later if you decide you really need to.For more information about planning a show, check out:So You Want to Start a PodcastHow to Write a Podcast Description That Attracts New ListenersHow to Design Stunning Podcast Cover Art That Stands Out2: Recording & ProductionThe goal: Get some recording gear and plan and record some episodes.Recording GearThere are ways to make a podcast using only your smartphone, or you could spend thousands of dollars on professional microphones, cameras, and accessories. There are good options for pretty much every budget.I recommend starting off with gear on the cheaper or affordable side, and then upgrading later if you decide the extra sound quality or utility is worth it to you. You want to avoid spending $2000 on gear only to decide a few months later that podcasting isn’t for you.Questions to consider:What is your budget? What gear do you need for the format you’ve chosen? How serious are you about podcasting?I keep a list of my favorite gear at kit.co/podcastingwithaaron. (Those are affiliate links, so I get a small cut of the sale if you buy something using the link on that site).Recording and Editing Software/AppsThere’s software and apps for recording and editing audio (Garageband, Audacity, Reaper, Logic Pro, Audition), and also software and apps for recording interviews (Squadcast, Zoom, Zencastr, Descript, Cleanfeed, etc).I prefer the paid software, but there are plenty of people who record and publish using free software. For best results, you’ll want to get an individual audio track for each person that’s on the podcast. This is why I like and use Squadcast. You don’t want to start off with one single audio track that has everyone’s voice on it, it makes editing and balancing the volume levels of each voice much harder.Practice recording to get comfortable with your gear and software before you start trying to record episodes that you plan to publish.I recommend doing at least couple of test/practice episodes that you don’t plan to publish, just so you can learn how to use your gear and the software without pressure to get everything right. This is especially important if you plan to do interviews.Creating EpisodesFor each episode, you'll need:An episode title/themeA short description of the episode (What is the episode about? Why should someone listen to it?)An outline for the episode (What are you going to talk about in the episode?)Episode notes or a script (You can write this before, or after. It can be as short or long as you like)Episode artwork (optional, but can be a nice touch)At the very least, you’ll need to have a title for the episode, how you’re going to start the episode, what you’re going to talk about, and then how you’re going to end the episode.Create / gather all this information, and then start recording! Be sure to save your recording when you're done.3: Editing & Post-ProductionThe goal: Edit your episodes and get them ready for publishing, and choose a hosting platform for your show.Editing a Podcast EpisodeEditing a podcast episode is definitely a topic that deserves it’s own episode or video, but the goal is to get all the audio files for the episode together, and then cut out anything you don’t want in the episode. Add music, sound effects, whatever else you want.I definitely encourage creativity with editing, but be aware that many new podcasters I’ve talked to find editing to be the hardest and most time consuming part of podcasting. If you’re just starting out, you might want to keep it simple. Only edit out really noticeable/terrible mistakes, and try to get the volume levels of the audio tracks roughly the same (this is known as mixing).Editing and mixing can take years to master or get good at, so be patient with yourself while you learn! Watching YouTube videos of other people editing will help.Once you’re done editing your episode, export an MP3 audio file. This is what you’ll upload to your podcast hosting platform.Choose a Podcasting Hosting Platform for Your ShowYou don’t actually upload episodes to Apple Podcasts or Spotify or the other podcast apps people use to listen to podcasts. Instead, you’ll sign up for an account on a podcast hosting platform that will provide you with an easy interface for adding information about your show and episode to an RSS feed. The RSS feed is essentially a text document that is hosted and updated by your podcast hosting platform. It will contain all of the information about your show, as well as links to where your episode audio files are hosted. You’ll give the URL or link for your show’s RSS feed to Apple, Spotify, and the other podcast apps and directories. That’s how you get your show listed there.Once those apps/directories have the link to your show’s RSS feed, they’ll get any updates or new episodes you publish in your podcast hosting platform automatically.Which hosting platform should I use for my podcast? There’s more than a few options for podcast hosting platforms.I really like Simplecast, Buzzsprout, Transistor, Captivate, and Fireside. There’s a popular free option called Anchor, but I don’t recommend using that unless you’re only planning on podcasting for fun or as a hobby. If you’re serious about podcasting and growing an audience, sign up for and use one of the hosting platforms I recommended. If you’re just having fun or can’t afford to spend money on podcasting at the moment, give Anchor a try.The podcast hosting platforms also provide you with a website for your show (important) and analytics so you can see things like how many downloads and plays your episodes get, where your listeners are, and which devices they’re listening on.Remember: You can always move your show to a different hosting platform any time you want.4: Launching & PromotingThe goal: Launch your podcast and start promoting it.Getting Ready to Launch Your ShowAt this point, you should have your show title, show description, and artwork, and at least one episode ready to be published (I'd recommend having 2-3 full episodes ready to publish before you officially launch).Create a Short Teaser Trailer Episode for Your ShowI also recommend writing and recording a teaser trailer episode. This is where you introduce yourself and the show, talk a little bit about it and who it’s for, why you’re making it, etc.I recommend making this trailer shorter than 2 minutes (but you can make it longer if you want).Getting Your Show into Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Other Podcast AppsOnce you've added the information about your show into your podcast hosting platform, and added your trailer or first episode, they’ll provide you with the link/URL to your show’s RSS feed. You’ll submit the URL/link to your show’s RSS feed to Apple Podcasts and Spotify and the other podcast apps. Some will take a few days to review and approve your show, some will approve and publish it pretty much right away or within a few hours. There’s a great help article from Simplecast that has links and instructions about how to submit a show’s RSS feed to every major podcast app or directory.Visit How to Publish Your Podcast on the Popular Podcast Apps.Publish Your Trailer Episode First, Then Your Full Episodes LaterI recommend publishing your trailer episode first, then submitting your RSS feed to Apple and the other places, then publishing your first few real episodes a week or two later. This gives you time to make sure your show is everywhere you want it to be before you publish full episodes, and having a trailer out allows you to begin promoting your show and getting people to subscribe to it before you publish the full episodes.Start Promoting Your ShowAt this point, you’ll want to create social media accounts for your show if you don’t already have some you plan to use.You don’t have to be on every social media platform: Focus on the ones where your target audience are the most active.Tell your friends, family, social media followers, etc.If you know of any magazines or blogs or publications that might be interested in featuring your show, reach out to them as well.Basically, you gotta get the word out and convince people to listen to your show. For more information about promoting a new podcast, check out:Buffer: We Didn’t Know How to Promote a Podcast. In this episode of Small Business Connections Ann talks about the myths of leadership with personal strategist and facilitator, Jodi Hume of LeadingClarity.com. The analogies, metaphors and stories are heartfelt and help clear up what it takes to be a good and effective leader. We all need help sometimes and, that is exactly what Ann and Jodi provide. Why are there myths about leadership? People are not born leaders- that's another myth, for another day. Ann and Jodi talk and share stories that provide clearer insight into two leading ladies' busy careers. The 4 myths we discuss- It's Lonely at the Top- MYTH BUSTED Leading is is an endurance sport- MYTH BUSTED Leading is Knowing- MYTH BUSTED Leading means having all the answers- MYTH BUSTED Jodi quotes Seth Godin's "The problem you can't talk about... is now TWO problems." Ann and Jodi dive deep into their experiences sharing that #youarenotalone and the importance of not having all the answers is part of being a leader. Coordinating help is vital to being a leader. This is where leadership gains energy and the business moves successfully forward. Jodi realized she was a facilitator at a young age and compares this discovery to a peanut M&M, separating the variables, she found her entrepreneurial skill. Jodi works with founders and leaders around the world, helping them from the beginning stages of a start-up business, through the growing pains and celebrates the victories. Jodi is a certified CoActive Coach, a trained skilled facilitator from Johns Hopkins University and has a Psychology Degree from Loyola University. You can also find Jodi singing with The Wafflers, a Blues & Folk Band, and as a host on her podcast, So Here's My Story... So many great stories are shared in these 40 something minutes. One we have to mention is Ann's story about endurance. Leading is an endurance sport so, you have to treat it like one. You have to rest, hydrate and train. Ann completed an Ironman competition and knows what endurance that took. She talks about her good friend Bill Bradley and his ultra-endurance races. Bill tells Ann, if I would just call you and you remind me to rest for 30 minutes, I would get the rest I need to complete the challenge. The Small Business Connections Podcast is hosted by Ann Brennan, owner of ASMM Digital Marketing. The podcast was created as a means of helping her clients build a community around their brands. Since its inception, the podcast has grown to include guests from around the world and has been listened to in over 20 countries. It doesn't have to be lonely at the top. Thanks for listening and be sure to subscribe.
This week, we're keeping with the horror themes by talking about all the reasons that Jordan Peele matters. We discuss Peele's history in television, film, and production. From the comedy years, time with Keegan-Michael Key, and most importantly how Peele has been reshaping horror. We cover how his directorial debut Get Out with Blumhouse has set the tone for horror going forward, changing its face, and forcing companies to realize that diverse stories, and in particular Black stories matter in the genre. Additionally, we discuss how his filmmaking has also caused a resurgence of social horror, and how his production company, Monkeypaw Productions has been moving the genre forward with films like Candyman and the HBO series Lovecraft Country which he produced with Bad Robot. And we cover it all with the help of LaNeysha from So Here's What Happened and Did You Have To?, who you can follow on Twitter @NeyshaPlays.
But you look so good! 96% of illnesses are invisible. These people do not use a cane or any assistive device and may look perfectly healthy. 60% are between the ages of 18 and 64. It's hard to know what to do when a person has an illness. It’s even harder when it's virtually invisible. So Here are today’s Hot Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating National Invisible Chronic Illness Week Don't be afraid to talk about what they're experiencing. Open the lines of communication and follow the other person's lead. If they want to go into details, they will. If they would rather talk about other things, they will let you know. If you're living with an invisible chronic illness it's important to keep connected. Reach out for support. It's only by opening up about your illness that you can educate people and invite them to be there for you. You may be surprised, but they may be dealing with their own invisible chronic illness and could really use your support, or they may become one of your biggest advocates or confidents. You won't know until you give them a chance. Looking for more information on making your mental health matter? Check out my online courses at worksmartlivesmart.com
