They recount their initial plans to move to Mirajin, Colombia, disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which led them to Puerto Escondido in Oaxaca, Mexico instead.  Suki expresses her love for Oaxaca, a vibrant city that meets the criteria of a mountain town with fresh air, diverse cultural activities, and a vibrant food scene. She also stresses the significance of learning Spanish to navigate daily life and establish connections with locals. The episode covers important factors to consider when buying property, such as the need for a centralized real estate system in Mexico and the need to take time and not feel pressured into a deal. Suki concludes by recommending different neighborhoods in Oaxaca based on individual preferences but advises against signing long-term leases and to find a place that matches one's personality.   Key Moments:  [00:01:23] Happy accident leads to life-changing relocation. [00:03:24] Unexpectedly ended up in Oaxaca and stayed. [00:11:10] Expats prefer certain areas with eco parks and golf courses. [00:24:05] Low maintenance costs and no heating bills. Michael Stuart Ani joins us for Season 1 (2021) of Birdsong. Michael has been a student of plant wisdom for fifty years. As a young man, the Lakota sage, John Fire Lame Deer, guided Michael through his first peyote ceremony and then sent him south to Mexico in search of the steps of the Ghost Dance. These steps led Michael to the Sierra Mazateca of Oaxaca, famous for its sacred mushrooms. From the end of the 1960's era through to the 1970's, Ani lived in the most remote part of the region. He became the only outsider who was ever allowed to collect Desheto, the sacred mushroom species of the deep tropical cloud forest of Chicon Nindo. He was instrumental in fighting the epidemics among the Yanomami people in the rainforests of Venezuela. He also helped to create a school to teach local indigenous people to be healthcare officers in the emerging Alto Orinoco Biosphere Reserve. His work in Venezuela was subsequently featured in the 1994 documentary, Yanomami, Keepers of the Flame, which won the US Environmental Film Festival's Best Documentary of the Year. Keepers of the Flame also became the feature film at the 1994 Brazilian Earth Summit. In 2002, Ani focused his attention back on the Northern States of the Americas and worked to restore some of the very last genetically pure Bison to the Brule, Lakota tribes on the Rosebud reservation in South Dakota. While on Rosebud, Ani responded to the requests of tribal elder Leonard Crow Dog and brought an eyeglass clinic to the reservation. Because of his efforts in South America and Mexico, and his work to build a ceremony house for renowned healer Grandpa Roy Stone, the Amazonia Foundation was honored by being included as an organization under the umbrella of the National Congress of American Indians. Michael has fulfilled his promise to Desheto by writing the book, “The Ghost Dance; an untold history of the Americas”. His catchprase “TALKING PLANTS” refers to a small group of fungi and plants that he believes have developed the ability to communicate with both humans and animals. Michael feels that these plants are key to survival in an uncertain future.    TIMESTAMPS: [6:05] Epidemics in the Amazon and losing jungle knowledge [7:55] Shamanic knowledge is received directly from the plants and spirit [10:34] LSD is GOD in pill form - Tim Leary [11:30] Honouring the sacred by learning the region and communing with the “talking plants” [14:30] Trailing the Ghost Dance, the very first ritual of the Americas [16:15] John Fire Lame Deer, Wounded-Knee and Ghost Dance [21:30] Communing with nature and learning from “talking plants” [27:20] It's not just difficult for US to survive in the forest… [29:05] Apprenticing to the immediate ecology to receive the secrets of the talking plants [31:38] Plants are part of controlling whats going on in the world today and the beginning of the “psychedelic movement” [35:25] Gaian intelligence & our Achilles heel as a species [38:50] Shamans are falling out of the trees [39:55] Tribal communal ceremonies vs deep medicine man ceremonies [43:17] Western culture and mental fragmentations [45:22] Michael's role to keep one lineage in-tact [47:29] Spiraling around to new beginnings by looking to plant medicine cultures of the past [50:00] Learning from Amazonian epidemics and returning to nature for CV-19 [55:16] Using cannabis in it's whole form as a medicine [56:49] Tobacco doesn't carry the same risk when using in its natural form [58:06] Mom + Pop farming is the way forward [59:01] There's a spiritual war in the jungles and it's going to affect us all… [1:01:51] How do you get people to care about ecological disaster? Introducing Embark's Slow Hiker Community, officially called the Pole-Pole club. Pole-Pole is Swahili means “slow slow,” and that's what these trips will be designed for – Slow Hikers. We have been running hiking adventures around the world for decades and know, first hand, the power and perseverance inside those who might not be the fastest in the group. Being slow doesn't stop us from being amazing hikers, climbers, and adventurers! You know you will make it to your destination, it just might take a bit longer. And, let's face it, it can be deflating to feel like you are constantly slowing others down. You know you're strong… you're just… slow. And what's so wrong with that? The Pole-Pole club is set around the concept of a slow pace- anyone can participate; just know if you come, you're definitely going to be taking your time. Next Steps Join our Slow Hikers Mailing List Tune in for our podcast about slow hiking Watch for our upcoming hikes designed for slow hikers Sign up and hike together, collecting Slow Hiker badges along the way- you know you want one! Prepare for the ultimate culmination of all your hard work – Everest Base Camp or Oaxaca Mexico! This summer, 2023, Embark will be planning a series of hikes meant for our Slow Hiker community. Together we will turn the slow hiker connotation on its head- we're going to Embrace the Slow. Our hikes will be just as dynamic and engaging as any of our Embark's adventures but there will be an emphasis on a measured pace, deliberated breaks and more assistance with packing and personal gear management. We are planning adventures to Canada, the Colorado Rockies, and Oaxaca, Mexico with a culminating epic trek to Everest Base Camp. There will be hikes every year for the Slow Hikers. The slow hikers concept is a way to really take in your surroundings; for some of us, this will be our only experience in the remote neck of the woods where Embark adventures take place…so why not take our time? Come hike with us! P.s. The hiking will be slow but don't dilly dally reserving your spot; there's a lot of us out there who are super enthused to have found this group and space is limited!

We explore the concepts of collective power, mutual aid, and cultural healing for personal and planetary wellness in this video podcast episode with my original teacher and mentor, Zev Friedman! Zev was a permaculture educator & consultant for 12 years before stepping into his current role of running Cooperate WNC, a mutual aid network & cooperative economics community in Western North Carolina. We unpack why a lot of permaculture and ecovillage undertakings fail, and how collective power helps navigate through that. Patterns of mutual aid and cooperativism, historical and cultural examples of people working together in this way, and where to start in your own life to overcome the isolation of individualism are all topics we dive into in this hour together! Zev is brilliant, so knowledgeable, and so fun to talk to. I hope this episode leaves you feeling uplifted and empowered! Resources: Cooperate WNC - join their mailing list, become a member, and join their patreon! Zev also hosts Wednesday night Cooperatude calls. Kudzu Culture Earthaven Ecovillage Zev's email: zev@cooperatewnc.org Show Notes: Jennings' initial learning via Zev of how humans can be a positive force on the planet - and how Zev has expanded that beyond individual permaculture projects. Permaculture is cool, but a lot of how we're implementing it is permeated by an individualist mentality - working in isolation doesn't create the support structures for people to do this meaningfully in their lives. Patterns of mutual aid and cooperativism - history of how humans have organized ourselves to get things done and care for each other more effectively than we have now. Mostly immigrant and low income communities do it now, and those with money live in illusion that's all we need - but mental health issues and suicide rates point to a different answer. People start cooperating because of present, concrete needs - examples are: 1. Spanish speaking immigrant communities in WNC forming housing cooperatives with LLCs as a way to own properties, forming a translation interpretation cooperative, informal childcare cooperative & school, a community center and community garden and 2. Mixteca region in Oaxaca Mexico. (book about them: “Milpa: Seed to Salsa” ) There are 12 villages within a watershed area with a multi-thousand year history of mutual aid and cooperative culture. They start 700,000 trees a year to sequester carbon, grow building materials and materials for charcoal through pooling money and labor to create greenhouses and plant trees out. In other cultures, like spanish speaking cultures, the imagination is there for how to participate in mutual aid due to being born into cultures where it is very much alive due to ancient cultural patterns and need - in an isolated, individualist society where we are told everything is up to us from birth, the imagination for cooperation isn't there, and so it has to be grown. (examples are via journaling on well-framed guided questions to see how people may already be cooperating in their lives without recognizing it, gatherings, and learning experiences) Looking for leverage points in our society - where can we take action and get people risking more trust at a deeper level? One answer is starting community savings pools. A savings pool is 15-20 people near each other with shared interests who create a shared savings account. People from group can then get 0% interest loan from group for, for example, pieces of equipment for starting a new farm business. Recommended exercise: Relationship mapping! Archetypal scales of Cooperation: Crew, Pod, Hub, Network And so much more!

The Interconnectedness of It All Through the Lens of Cacao with Jonas Ketterle Podcast Episode Summary Jonas Ketterle crafts unsweetened ceremonial grade cacao that is used in cacao ceremonies around the world.  It all began in a Zapotech town in Oaxaca Mexico with strong chocolate traditions with one afternoon of making chocolate the traditional way, open fire roasted, hand peeled within sight of their sacred mountain and stone ground with a.molino.  He regularly teaches how to stone grind fresh cacao paste from the bean using a traditional metate.  Jonas founded the bean to bar dark chocolate company Firefly chocolate, in 2014, with the mission of inspiring awe and wonder through cacao.  He is a mechanical engineering graduate from Stanford university, and his engineering know how keeps all the tools running at firefly.  Always with a focus on health, he initially launched 85% dark chocolate in a variety of flavors and sweetened with low glycemic coconut sugar.  He studied permaculture and nature awareness at the regenerative design institute and has lived in eco-villages and cooperative houses for the majority of the last ten years. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that this may be one of the most important conversations you've ever tuned in to, no matter where you are on the cacao spectrum.  This exchange goes deeply into how we actually create real change in consumerism, capitalism and our individual lives.  Do you know where you're food comes from, the lands that are impacted, the harm or health it has created in it's environment,  the indigenous communities or farmers it does or doesn't support, the nutrients it provides in it's whole form or how it has been manipulated and deprived?  Or ways to create miracles in your own life?  How there might be a more effective way to encourage large scale climate reform?  Jonas and I get into conscious consumption, value systems in business, cacao plant medicine, history, production and consumerism, climate change through consciousness, reverence for all things life, story telling, ancestral wisdom and creating miracles.  Honestly we cover some great life bullet points that may just be the key to our desperately needed pivot and ultimate healing. Scroll down to check out the conversation! Show Notes How Jonas met cacao through it's traditional roots Conscious consumption Communing with creation energy and our senses Disconnection from our food sources Colonialism continues in the chocolate industry Changing the social impact and value systems in consumerism Climate change and genetic engineering Rainforest ecosystem devastation and recovery Polyculture planting Global chocolate vs Ceremonial Cacao Supporting businesses with clear value systems What cacao is and what it isn't The plant spirit and medicine of cacao Story telling and connecting to gratitude for harmonious outcomes Intention setting with cacao Cacao as a catalyst to embodiment The versatility and numerous benefits of cacao The history of cacao Cacao alcohol?? Cacao as a whole food vs. cacao powder or chocolate Cacao has co-evolved with humans! A deeper look at the benefit of the whole food Diving into ceremony and ritual The power of sharing in the collective Building a practice is where your true knowledge comes from Sensitivity around the word ceremony and exploitation of indigenous communities Ceremony as a human birthright The concept of cultural mentoring Reverence for elders Holding sacred space for spirit transition and grief simultaneously What happens when we disrupt our personal status quo Miracles are changes of perception What happens when we create instead of defend Climate change deeply needs human consciousness and miracles How grief fuels connection in life Sacred economics and capitalism Blasting the frequency of Light into mainstream capitalism Shared human experience felt in ceremony The sacred interconnectedness of it all/ Who would your dream guest by and why?
