Beyond ideology and de-risking, we also hear from the author of a Harvard Business Review paper on how companies in ESG-focussed portfolios (Environment, Social, Governance) perform badly on ESG, and how little influence investors have on the ESG behavior of companies or countries. Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast. Today’s podcast news podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: www.elevatorbooks.com OTIS ELEVATOR AIRFLOW STUDY: COVID-19 RISK LOW WITH MITIGATION Otis released results of a three-month academic study on how elevator airflow affects potential exposure to COVID-19 on January 27. Led by Dr. Qingyan Chen, the James G. Dwyer professor of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, the study presented a science-based approach to mitigating exposure in elevators. Findings show the significant amount of air exchange in most elevators, combined with simple mitigation strategies (including all riders wearing surgical-style masks and installation of an air-purification system), puts an elevator ride on the lower end of the exposure spectrum. The study concluded that, when simple mitigation measures are in place, a short elevator ride of 1-2 min represents a very low risk of exposure compared with several everyday activities, such as dining outdoors and going to the grocery store. Intensity of exposure is impacted by the level of air exchange or ventilation. By design, elevators have significant air exchange and are required by code to have openings for ventilation. Many elevators also have fans to increase ventilation. “If all passengers properly wear masks, the relative exposure risk drops 50%,” Chen said. “Air purification systems that use NPBI® [Needlepoint Bipolar Ionization from Schaumburg, Illinois-based BSE] can reduce this risk by an additional 20-30%.” Image credit: by Alexey Hulsov for Pixabay To read the full transcript of today's podcast, visit: elevatorworld.com/news Subscribe to the Podcast: iTunes │ Google Play | SoundCloud │ Stitcher │ TuneIn

Quantum Quote:  "I am always intrigued by the resistance to change, especially with clean energy. We can get rid of coal & oil. We really can. We just need the willingness to adapt”. Do you want to take action to protect wildlife and reduce pollution?  Do you want limits put on carbon pollution, action on climate change, and a faster transition to clean energy? Mass media plays a big role in creating clean energy and environmental awareness. Keeping humankind entertained, while keeping us informed. Jason Evans is the founder of the Maui-based production company, Silvershark Media, with a strong background in storytelling. Silvershark produces national campaigns, marketing videos, and webisodes. In the television realm they've had a hand in producing content for FOX, Travel Channel, Discovery Channel, Food Network, Golf Network, TLC, HGTV, among other networks. Jason has been involved in the TV industry since 2000  is a 4x Emmy Nominee for the Best Daytime Travel Series. He is the producer for Xploration Awesome Planet (a Steve Rotfeld Productions featuring Philippe Cousteau, grandson of the legendary Jacques Cousteau) geared toward 13 to 19 year olds. In this episode, Jason talks about how our way of living affects the natural habitat and the wild animals living around us, and how every decision we have has a connection to the changes that every living creature on earth is experiencing right now. He also shares how mass media helps humankind be entertained and informed about ongoing policies from the comfort of their home. Announcement: The Season 6 of Awesome Planet has just started to premiere. Please support. SuperNova #1: [Our lifestyle affects wild-life] Whether it be contaminated water that is endangering populations of certain animals or whether it be development, it's all connected together.  SuperNova #2:  United Technologies is working on an Otis Elevator that uses only 10% of the electricity of current elevators. It uses the hybrid idea of regenerative braking to capture the energy of the elevator going down and uses that energy to bring the elevator back up. SuperNova #3: [Characteristic of wild-life in their natural habitat] In this case, a shark. Sharks are not mindless killers. When you do free swims, you see them in their natural habitat. Some people might have hesitation when they don't see 20 sharks rushing right up to them. Maybe they have a different perspective of sharks in the wild. It's really a conservation approach through emotion and inspiration. SuperNova #4: [Having a Younger Generation knowledgeable about the importance of clean energy]. The younger generation (that's now not so young anymore), is entering & maturing in the workforce, and coming with a heavy hand of ‘Hey, we don't have to always do things like they used to be done.'  That's going to be an important thing to see these young leaders really push the capabilities of what's possible [in using clean energy]. Worst Clean Energy Moment:  I love seafood, and working on an Earth Science show I learned about where my food is sourced from. When you look into seafood, you can certainly find areas that are wrecking reefs, wrecking habitats, wrecking ecosystems, wrecking mangroves. I became more conscious of what I was buying at restaurants and trying to make sure - as much as I could - that everything was done sustainably because I know that everything's related whether it be storm protection, whether it be ecosystem habitat, whether it be keeping our waters in a clean state by not wrecking oyster beds and filter feeders.  Ah-Ha: Paying attention to what I was purchasing, and really taking that extra step to be informed and not just blindly taking what I wanted.  Best Advice: The best advice I ever received was not to be scared of the word, no. Personal Success: I'm very organized. Organization to me is one of my traits that I am proud of, and I think absolutely contributes to workflow success and future success. Internet Resources: BBC Science; Outside Online  Book Recommendation: The Old Man and The Sea by Ernest Hemingway Magic Wand: If I could change one thing with a magic wand, I would eliminate the fossil fuel industry and instantly convert it to something better. There's so much impact on air pollution, water contamination to our drinking waters, not to mention just burning, burning, burning all these resources. That would be one wand swipe that could knock out a lot of different problems. WTF or F: Done a couple of really, really heavy cold-weather things above the Arctic Circle. To me, that was the most intriguing weather that I've experienced personally. Negative 40 negative 50 - barely no daylight at nine o'clock, or you get basically a sunset hue for two hours. And then it's dark again, which takes some adjustment getting used to. One thing that Energizes Jason today: The one thing I'm most energized about today is tomorrow. I think that we have such potential and a rolling ball of momentum. Seeing the private sector take on a lot of these challenges (clean energy), and say we're not waiting around any more - that excites me. Parting Advice: If you have the influence to help give sparks to younger generations - do so and give opportunities. I think it goes a long way. And for me that's that's one thing that I really kind of take pride in and try to focus on. Telling the stories of up and coming youth leaders that are going to be our leaders of tomorrow, and also telling the stories of people that inspire those youth leaders to get involved in the first place. So my advice is: if you can give that spark to anyone, it goes a long way. Carl Wagner was born nearly 60 years ago in Yonkers, New York, but has called the Hoosier state his home since 1968 when his father's promotion and transfer for Otis Elevator landed the New York family in Bloomington, Indiana, home of stone quarries, cows and corn, Indiana University, and quiet country roads for the family of eight. Though his first day of kindergarten at School 23 in Yonkers, and later his first day of 3rd grade 800 miles away at Ellettsville Elementary might have led young Carl to want to eventually settle into any occupation that didn't have to do with chalkboards and grade books and dunce caps, he knew from 5th grade on that he would be a teacher. After high school, he went to Wabash College where he switched his college major only once, from biology to English, and upon graduating from Wabash, began a teaching and coaching career of 35 years, interrupted only by a two-year stint in graduate school at Louisiana State University. Since retiring from the classroom three years ago, Carl has been a college and career coach. He and his wife Bobbi have been married for 36 years. Carl's all-time favorite book is The Little Prince, he plans on running a marathon this fall with a good friend who will be returning from military deployment in Saudi Arabia, and he hopes to someday write a book tentatively titled On Leaving Facebook. He is a self-described social activist, supporter of Children's Miracle Network hospitals, a proud contributor to foundations supporting research in MS, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and autism, and, probably of great surprise to those who know him, a recent convert to unabashed and unapologetic advocacy of cannabis legalization. Lastly, Carl will tell you that age 40 meant nothing to him except a $5,000 hole in his pocket, but the impending 60th birthday just might be something entirely different. I've known him since I was 8 years old when my oldest brother was running on his track and cross country teams. He seemed larger than life to me then. He was an inspirational coach. I didn't know it at the time, but at that point he was barely out of college! He was my high school English teacher. I loved his classes. I loved the debates. I remember debating little nuances of books in his class. I remember anticipating coming to his class and seeing his Quote of the Day on the board. He inspired me. What I loved about this interview: 1. If you love books and literature, you will love this interview. Every few minutes Carl is quoting, referencing, or alluding to a line from a book. 2. We talked about the difference in two questions. The first, "What do you want to do?" The second, "Who do you want to be?" The second is more important. 3. Listen to all the advise. Then sift through it. 4. Carl doesn't give advise. He makes suggestions. Lots of allusions to books, but a few that were more prominently discussed were Death of a Salesman (he also gave permission to watch the movie with Dustin Hoffman), A Raisin in the Sun, The Gift of Years, and Move Your Chair. Thoreau, Emerson, TS Elliott are other names that come up.

Last fall, after United Technologies Corp. announced it would spin off its Otis Elevator and Carrier divisions, then Governor-elect Ned Lamont vowed he would watch the Farmington-based conglomerate "like a hawk" to retain its workforce in Connecticut. But this weekend's news that UTC would merge with Raytheon Co., and move its headquarters to Waltham, MA., came with little advanced notice to the Lamont administration. But should it have been all that surprising? Especially given the draw of major economic hubs like Boston, and what some see as a lack of priority by the General Assembly to adequately address the state's relatively stagnant job growth over the past decade? Today, with Lucy Nalpathanchil from WNPR's Where We Live in the host seat, we assess the political and economic ramifications of UTC's plans. What lessons can the state learn from this latest hit? United Technologies recently settled an FCPA enforcement action with the SEC by paying $13.9 million for bribes paid by its elevator and aircraft businesses. UT disclosed the investigation to DOJ and the SEC in late 2013 or early 2014. DOJ declined to prosecute in March 2018. UT agreed to disgorge $9 million, plus interest of about $919,000 and to pay a penalty of $4 million.   The SEC's FCPA settlement contains extensive details on the conduct and the alleged violations ranging from bribery through third parties to excessive gifts and entertainment involving two significant subsidiaries, Pratt & Whitney and Otis Elevator. The settlement focused on bribery schemes in Azerbaijan and China relating to third-party bribery payments. In addition to these two bribery schemes, UT was cited for improper trips and gifts paid by Otis and its Pratt & Whitney division to foreign officials in China, Kuwait, South Korea, Pakistan, Thailand and Indonesia. In this episode, Michael Volkov discusses the SEC's settlement with UTC and identifies important lessons learned from the investigation.

MIKE GOSS:  I believe that everything in life in one way or another is a project.  So if that's true, how do I increase my chances of it being successful, and who can I help with it? NICK WALKER:  Welcome to Manage This, the podcast by project managers for project managers.  Every two weeks we get together to talk about the ins and outs of project management and what matters to you as a professional in the field.  We'll talk with some of the leaders in project management to find out what motivates them, what drives them to succeed, and to get some encouragement and inspiration from them. I'm your host, Nick Walker, and with me are the two main motivators around here, Andy Crowe and Bill Yates.  And Bill, today we have with us via Skype someone who has made it a life goal to inspire people. BILL YATES:  Yeah.  And Mike, I'm excited about having you on this ‘cast because you've been entertaining our operations team for weeks and weeks and weeks.  I can always tell when they're on the phone with you, so I'm looking forward to this. NICK WALKER:  Well, let's meet Mike.  He has held sales and leadership positions with four multinational companies, several small and mid-size businesses, and three of his own businesses.  He's an accomplished sales trainer, a project management trainer, contract project manager, speaker, and author.  And one of Mike's lifetime goals is to reach 10 million people with a message of hope and inspiration.  Today he'll get a little closer to that goal right here in our studio.  Mike, via Skype from Portland, Oregon, it's great to have you with us here on Manage This. MIKE GOSS:  Well, I'm honored to be here.  I'm glad I was invited because this – Velociteach, Andy Crowe, Bill Yates – this is the big-time.  I got invited to the big-time.  Hallelujah. NICK WALKER:  Well, you know, that goal of reaching 10 million people might seem unusual to a lot of people.  Why did you set that particular goal? MIKE GOSS:  A few years ago I had open heart surgery.  I had chest pains and didn't tell my wife.  And when she finally found out, things happened, and suddenly I'm having a five-way heart bypass.  When I woke up, I checked around, and I said, “I'm still alive.”  I wiggled my toes.  They're still working.  I tried my fingers.  They're still working.  I couldn't talk because they had these huge things down my throat.  But I thought, you know, I must be here for a reason.  God must still not be done with me. So I set a goal to see how many people I could enrich.  And if you're going to make a goal, you might as well make a big one.  I didn't set out to enrich 10 people.  I set out to enrich 10 million in one way or another.  And when I speak or when I create a course or when I'm teaching boot camps, it's all about making the other person better off.  I want to be able to say I did something; I made my mark by helping others. NICK WALKER:  Well, let's go way back.  Way back, I guess, even when the first little seeds of your career began to be planted.  You had the nickname of “Otis” in junior high school and in high school.  Tell us why. MIKE GOSS:  I lived in Pendleton, which had a total of four elevators – Pendleton, Oregon.  But I was always fascinated by the box moving up and down with people or materials in it, the counterweight behind it, all the mechanical and electronic things that had to happen to make it work.  I was fascinated with it, and I always talked about it.  My friends got very tired of listening to it.  I made scale model elevators and entered them in science fair projects.  It just went on and on.  And eventually I got to work for my dream company, Otis Elevator. NICK WALKER:  As a matter of fact, I understand one of your usernames is ElevatorFan.  Would that be true of you? MIKE GOSS:  Well, yes.  When I was setting up my account in Skype it said, “What handle do you want?”  And I, well, thinking Otis, somebody took Otis.  So I said ElevatorFan.

I was operating a crane during a change-out at Otis Elevator in Bloomington, Indiana 7   12 hour shifts for 2 weeks.   My cousin was getting married in Columbus the next day and I was going to stay in Columbus, go to the wedding, then back to Otis for the last half of my shift. About 1-1:30 am I was coming to the entrance to the state park, in the middle of the road a guy was doing jumping jacks trying to get me to stop.  I pulled over, pulled out my Rugar 10-22 just in case and stepped out of the van. Something was on the north side of the road about 30 ft. up. This guy was scared to death, I jumped back in the van, unlocked the door and he dove in. We were being pelted with good size rocks. The guy had crapped his pants and I don't blame him.   In the rear view we could see the silhouette of this thing, it was big and pissed.   We stopped at the gas station about a mile east and he changed into a pair of sweats I had in the back.  We did not go back to check out what the thing was or if it was still there."
