On being a coach and a player, amidst blurring job titles Through a serendipitous journey of fortuitous decisions, Pankaj Rai has embraced diverse roles in various industries over the course of his multi-decade career. His fearlessness towards change and wholehearted acceptance of the outcomes have become the guiding ideals he holds dearly. In an inspiring podcast, the Chief Data Analytics Officer at Aditya Birla Group sheds light on the transformative potential of AI and data analytics in revolutionizing businesses. As Chief Data Analytics Officer: The focus is on being a coach and a player, helping to build data analytics capabilities in each group company to drive transformation and better decision-making. Aditya Birla Group is a Fortune 500 global conglomerate with a diverse portfolio of businesses, including metals, cement, chemicals, fashion, and finance. Pankaj's role involves developing a data analytics culture across the group companies. Balancing centralization and decentralization: Aditya Birla Group's approach is to have a central data analytics function that acts as a thought leadership entity and an advisory, while also helping to develop data analytics capabilities in each group company. This model allows for a balance between centralization and autonomy while considering the diverse businesses within the conglomerate. Consideration of context: Pankaj highlights the importance of considering the context when implementing any approach to transformation. The growth mindset and willingness to innovate may be more suitable in certain contexts, while in others, external factors like regulation and market conditions might limit the scope for innovation. Serendipity and Growth Mindset: Pankaj attributes some of his success to serendipity but also acknowledges that having a growth mindset and being open to new challenges and opportunities played a significant role in his career trajectory. Blur in roles: Pankaj mentions that roles such as Chief Data Analytics Officer, Chief Data Officer, and CIO are increasingly blurring. There is a need to focus on driving transformation and value creation rather than getting stuck in traditional role definitions. Pankaj offers three key takeaways for CIOs, CDOs, and other professionals: a. Break away from past thinking and structures; adopt an entrepreneurial mindset. b. Focus on the customer as the center of your efforts, rather than being bound by industry definitions. c. Embrace ecosystem thinking, fostering collaboration and partnerships for better outcomes.
When designing analytical systems for clinicians, "Take Ai out of the conversation completely," advises Sameer Sethi, Senior Vice President and Chief Data Analytics Officer at Hackensack Meridian Health. However, AI is woven throughout the fifteen-minute video interview below where Sethi is interviewed along with Prashant Natarajan, General Manager, Health & Life Sciences at H2O.ai. Sethi's message is that your users care about what AI can do for them, not that it is AI that's accomplishing the task. Two critical uses for AI discussed by Sethi and Natarajan are conversational AI and searching unstructured documents for purposes such as recruiting patients for clinical trials. Data Futurology - Data Science, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence From Industry Leaders
For our milestone 200th Data Futurology podcast, we have the immense fortune of being able to host Gina Papush, the former Global Chief Data & Analytics Officer of wellness and insurance company, Cigna. Papush has a long history in data science, having been involved in modelling and coding from before the time where “data scientist” was a defined role. In the years since, she has observed that enterprises have become siloed across computer science, data science, and other roles, and that the next stage of data science evolution now is to now break those silos down and find ways to bring cohesion across the organisation. She has also seen the role of the CDO and their remit evolve, from one that focused on governance and controls, to being a value creator within the organisation. Being an effective agent for change has been important to that evolution, she says on the podcast, and data executives need to look to the “blind spots” that they might have. Many have the technical skills to excel in analytics, but building skills in influence and thought leadership, and to be a partner to the other stakeholders of the organisation, is the next critical step for the CDO. Finally, Papush also shares her insights on how value is extracted from data. A “one size fits all” approach cannot work, she says, and organisations need to build their strategies based on the maturity of their own data practice, rather than the hype in the market. Once the maturity is there, she says, data scientists can start looking at real life-changing innovation. “It's (data) a huge part of how we move healthcare to be more preventive and more interactive,” she said. “Health is currently very event driven. But analytics and AI could make it much more seamless and unlock real-time care.” Tune in to the full podcast for more of Papush's thoughts on the history and future of data science. Chief Data Analytics Officer for FirstRand Risk, Dr Mark Nasila, joins us on this episode of the podcast series to discuss the meaning of Artificial Intelligence and its role in the financial industry. Emerging technologies combined with social challenges across the world, has meant that every industry has had to reimagine itself. Banking has had to resort to remote ways of working, scale up digital channels and implement flexible terms for customers in order to keep them interested in using their products and services. One of the key technologies driving this is AI, and the banking industry had invested almost $12-billion by 2021 to address these challenges head on. Digitisation is becoming an expectation, and Mark outlines just some of the exciting use cases he has seen in the financial services space. The digital experience starts at onboarding, and one example of this is Uber which has been integrated into many financial systems to be able to onboard customers even if they are not banked. In the Risk space, machine learning algorithms are much better suited to processing a lot of information, providing the right focus to make accurate decisions as opposed to traditional ways of judgmental credit. This has been scaled in areas such as Fraud so that not too much time is spent using a blanket approach. Another area is Risk decisioning; analysts spend so much time going through customer details, so AI is enhancing the due diligence process. The future of payments is being reimagined, for example using facial recognition systems instead of cards in supermarkets that link to customer portfolios. Quantum computing in security is better at encrypting data and can therefore identify anomalies that may indicate the presence of cyber-crime. And so the list goes on. Mark believes it’s very important for organisations to educate on the role of AI and also the implications of adopting it. There’s much talk about AI taking the place of people’s jobs, but in fact, if implemented correctly it can drive productivity and allow us as human beings to focus on human functions which we are much better suited for. Strategies are also important in articulating where AI should be used and how it can be used productively. Governance is key to ensuring the correct use of AI, safeguarding privacy and protecting the continued value of humanity.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Every data professional will gladly discuss their big wins — but what about their big losses? How have career hiccups molded them into the leaders they are today and put them on a path to transform entire industries? Sol Rashidi is the Chief Analytics Officer at the Estée Lauder Company. Throughout her personal and professional life, Sol has used moments of uncertainty as opportunities for growth. Today she is recognized as one of the top 50 most powerful women in tech. On this episode of The Data Chief, Sol joins Cindi for a candid conversation about how she uses challenging circumstances as fuel for further innovation, and how she turns failures into valuable learning moments. Sol also takes a deep dive into the unique position of the CDO as both a business and a tech partner, why data as a service for internal stakeholders is just as important as when designing consumer-facing data products, and why knowing your shelf life is one of the most valuable professional skills you can have.Main TakeawaysCompetition breeds innovation: When it comes to fostering innovation, having the right talent and a propensity for technology are both critical to success. But so is a healthy amount of competition. When your margins are locked, there's no sense of urgency and it's easy to slide into a state of complacency. On the other hand, industries with more competition tend to see higher levels of innovation because teams are motivated to push the envelope. Data as a service for internal stakeholders: External facing data apps and operationalizing machine learning are great for data monetization, but applying a product mindset is a key tool for internal stakeholders as well. The reality is enterprises are hungry for insights and it's important to develop tools with these constituents in mind. Data and insights must come to life for the organization so it can be used by anyone within the organization. The scope of tech is always changing: Every new piece of technology is going to possess the latest and greatest features, but it's important to understand where that technology is in its maturity cycle and a particular tech partner's focus. Will a particular service solve the need for the business at hand, and will it continue to serve a need into the future? These answers are often more telling than any laundry list of features.About SolSol Rashidi currently holds 8 patents, with 21 filed in the Data & Analytics space and is a keynote speaker at several technology conferences speaking on various topics such as Machine Learning, Data & Analytics, and Emerging Operating Models for organizations taking on transformations in the D&A space. Prior to joining Estee Lauder as their Chief Analytics Officer, Sol was the Chief Data & Analytics Officer for Merck, EVP and CDO for Sony Music, and Chief Data & Cognitive officer for Royal Caribbean.Goal oriented and a team player, Sol believes in uncomplicating the complicated and cultivating environments that are innovative, driven, and collaborative. Sol has a unique ability in bridging the gap between Business and IT, her deep understanding of multiple functional disciplines (i.e. change management, enterprise data, application architecture, process re-engineering, sales, etc.) enables her to drive change by articulate the need for change in organizations that otherwise wouldn't evolve.Sol played NCAA Water Polo and Rugby for Cal on the Women's National Rugby Team for several years, and completed the Ironman.--The Data Chief is presented by our friends at ThoughtSpot. Data governance. It's a “dirty word” in business often associated with being told “no,” but from the perspective of the CDO it's a crucial part of managing data quality and trust. How are employees being held accountable? Do people have the right access to insights? And is your own business' data infrastructure and governance policies fostering innovation or stifling it? Ameet Shetty is Chief Data and Analytics Officer at Pilot Flying J, a company that serves more than 1.3 million consumers daily while operating more than 750 locations stateside. On this episode of The Data Chief, Ameet joins Cindi for a conversation on data governance and how to organize your analytics team. Ameet explains why governance gets a bad rap while also touching on the importance of balancing accountability with innovation, having the right technology foundation in place, and the most successful CDOs are natural connectors.Main TakeawaysLean on data as a driver for customer insights and intimacy: Data is key to creating unique personalized touchpoints for your customers. By allowing customers to willingly provide information across all the business touchpoints, this creates a chance to drive insights and move the organizations forward. Companies can use this information to create a stickier connection with the user by providing more personalized experiences in-store or across its apps, but this also gives the business a chance to enhance every touch point and provide a consistent user experience.Building a holistic team pushes you forward: A single individual cannot pull the boat forward, but a team rowing together can get the boat to where it needs to go. When building teams, make sure you are taking a holistic approach and bringing in members from different fields of expertise and backgrounds to close the gap in areas where you are not as strongOver-governing stifles innovation: The term governance is a dirty word for a lot of enterprises, but it's more important to think about governance not as a burden or regulatory issue but more as data management. It's important always to maintain data quality, but you must have a balance because you don't want to govern your data to the point that it stifles innovation.About AmeetAmeet Sheet is the Chief Data Officer at Pilot Flying J. Prior to joining Pilot, Ameet served as McDonald's first Chief Data Officer. Ameet is helping to define and infuse data across the global enterprise. He is creating the roadmap to identify the technology, team, process and culture change required for enabling enterprise data transformation and establish best-in-class processes for data strategy and governance and evangelizing these changes throughout McDonald's.Prior to McDonald's, Ameet was the Chief Data & Analytics Officer for SunTrust Banks, Inc. In this role, he led the Enterprise Data & Analytics office, with responsibility for driving the strategic vision and effective deployment of data and business intelligence capabilities to improve efficiency, reduce risk, and enable strategic business growth.Ameet earned an MBA in Marketing from Georgia State University and a Bachelor's degree in Finance from the University of Georgia. --The Data Chief is presented by our friends at ThoughtSpot. Permafrost Releasing Greenhouse Gases as it Thaws (0:41)Guest: Jordan Wilkerson, PhD Student in Atmospheric Chemistry, HarvardWe've got a feedback loop going on in the Arctic where, as the atmosphere warms, the permanently frozen ground there is thawing. As it thaws, carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide (AKA laughing gas) escape into the atmosphere, where they cause further warming, which thaws more permafrost, which releases more greenhouse gas and round and round. Only now are researchers getting a grasp on how fast that cycle is going. An atmospheric chemistry lab at Harvard just published some data showing there's a lot more nitrous oxide escaping the permafrost than previously thought. Anger Can Actually Be a Good Thing (14:19)Guest: Ryan Martin, Professor of Psychology, University of Wisconsin-Green BayWe often think of anger as a bad thing – it can make us mean and reckless and lead us to believe that the idiot cutting us off in traffic is a monster. And it's even worse on the internet. But anger expert Ryan Martin says we're overlooking the emotion's power for good. Sudden Infant Death Claims the Lives of 3,500 Babies Each Year, But New Research May Be the Answer to Ending It (31:39)Guest: John Kahan, President of the Aaron Matthews SIDS Research Guild at Seattle Children's Hospital, Chief Data Analytics Officer at MicrosoftThousands of infants in the US every year die suddenly, for no apparent medical reason. There's no warning. No way to know if an infant is at risk. The rate of these Sudden Unexpected Infant Deaths has remained steady since the mid-1990s. Efforts to prevent SIDS by putting babies to sleep on their backs and eliminating smoking in the household have reduced, but not eliminated these deaths. Why, with our advanced medical technology and economic wealth, haven't we solved SIDS yet? Breathing and Shaking Toward Recovery from Trauma (50:51)Guest: James S. Gordon, MD, professor of psychiatry and family medicine, Georgetown Medical School, author of “The Transformation: Discovering Wholeness and Healing after Trauma”Overcoming the effects of a serious trauma might include medication and therapy. If you're being treated by psychiatrist James Gordon, it will include deep breathing and frenzied full-body shaking. Dr. Gordon's techniques sound strange, but they've worked for teachers and students affected by the Parkland shooting and for people in Puerto Rico, Houston, Haiti and New Orleans devastated by natural disasters. The techniques have also helped Syrian refugees in Jordan, Palestinian children in Gaza and a range of veterans and victims of war suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Jackie Robinson's Daughter on Her Civil Rights Awakening in 1963 (1:28:29)Guest: Sharon Robinson, Author “Child of the Dream: A Memoir of 1963”1963 was a pivotal year for the Civil Rights movement in America. The historic March on Washington happened that summer. In the months before that march, the nation watched in horror as TV news cameras showed Alabama police using firehoses and dogs on African American youth marching in what's known as the Birmingham Children's Crusade. And in September of 1963, four African American girls were murdered in the bombing of Birmingham's 16th Street Baptist Church. 1963 was also a pivotal year in the life of Sharon Robinson, the middle child and only daughter of baseball legend Jackie Robinson.
