Every time Eisner and Ringo Nominated Steve Foxe comes on the show to chat with me, I'm blown away by just how many projects he's dropping. In this episode, we're covering three of them primarily. He's living the dream getting to write an Alien mini-series with Paradiso, there's the inaugural release of the new True Weird line of books from Dark Horse Comics and James Tynion's Tiny Onion focused on the myth of the Jersey Devil called Let This One Be A Devil, and spinning out of the Spider-Woman series is the New Champions, a wild concept where he was able to put together a new team of heroes based on twenty-two variant covers that dropped a year or so ago inspired by Marvel icons that were reimagined for the next generation. The only way to keep track of it all is to sign up for his newsletter. Alien Paradiso - Dec 11, 2024 WELCOME TO PARADISO! Welcome to Paradiso, where the money flows like blood and the blood flows like acid! The Tulum of space, Paradiso is a hidden gem among the colonies with its tropical climate, white sand beaches and a remarkable population of hyper-wealthy criminals. When Colonial Marshals Dash Nanda and Lydia Reeves are sent there to bust a smuggling ring, they think they've hit the job-assignment jackpot. But the only ones getting lucky here are those HUNGRY enough to take what they need. Steve Foxe, Edgar Salazar and guest contributor Peter Nguyen shine neon lights on the horrors of the Alien franchise with a bold story of the gambles we must take to survive! New Champions - Jan 8, 2025 WHO ARE THE NEW CHAMPIONS? What do four kids whose lives were derailed by Hydra, Scarlet Witch's mysterious protégé, a cursed roller derby jammer and a Wakandan runaway have in common? Not much! But when Hellrune's mysterious powers activate to bring them together, they'll have to learn how to work as a team quickly - or face the wrath of the Cult of Hela! Steve Foxe and Ivan Fiorelli (TIMESLIDE) team up to introduce the next generation of Marvel Heroes! Let This One Be A Devil - Feb 2025 In the early 1900s, Henry Naughton returns home to the family farm in the swampy Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey. One night, he encounters a strange predator stalking the woods. This sends the young scholar on a research project that uncovers the legend of Mother Leeds and the terrible birth of the JERSEY DEVIL in 1735. James Tynion IV (BLUE BOOK, Something is Killing the Children) and Steve Foxe (Dark X-Men, All Eight Eyes along with Piotr Kowalski (Bloodborne, Where Monsters Lie) bring the Jersey Devil to life in a supernatural tale of horror that peels back unknown layers of history and reveals local monsters and universal terrors. Of all the saints and heroes of the faith we have in our Catholic tradition, it can be difficult to spiritually connect with martyrs. Maybe that's part of the point of martyrs, to trouble us a bit in a holy way, to remind us that sometimes faith in Christ can mean literally laying down one's life for one's friends. The martyrs invite us to reflect on the depth of my own faith commitments, and whether we'd share their steadfast courage if we were in their shoes. Does faith come first in my life, or only when it's convenient? Today's guest is the perfect person to ask about Christian martyrdom and what we might learn from the stories and witness of individual martyrs. Fr. Peter Nguyen, SJ, is a theologian and a scholar of Christian martyrdom, and he has devoted much of his career learning and writing about martyrs. A Jesuit priest who spent this past academic year at Marquette University as the Reverend Francis C. Wade, SJ, Chair, Fr. Nguyen spoke to host Mike Jordan Laskey recently about two martyrs who gave their lives during World War II: Fr. Alfred Delp, SJ, and Edith Stein, who is also known as St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Both Delp and Stein died as part of the resistance to Nazi Germany. Fr. Nguyen thinks it is worthwhile to engage with their legacies today, even as the details of their lives might challenge us and make us uncomfortable. Learn more about Fr. Brews and Tiny Teeth, The Unfiltered Pediatric Dentistry Podcast
Dr. Peter Nguyen is a pediatric dentist who started First Bite Pediatric Dentistry in Henderson, Nevada. Dr. Nguyen grew up as the child of Vietnamese war refugees. He did his pediatric residency at UCLA, before moving to the Las Vegas area and associating for a number of practices prior to doing his start-up. Dr. Nguyen has a great sense of humor and as he puts it, "I'm not the smartest guy on iPedo so I have to make up for it with my sense of humor." I loved this podcast, I thought it was awesome to just laugh out loud and tell stories about ridiculous things that happen in our practice. We talk about Dr. Nguyen's start-up journey, then discuss crazy and ridiculous things parents and kids have done in our offices. We also talk about "verbal judo" and the art of communicating with parents when it comes to tough treatment plans or difficult situations.
This episode Emiliano, recording straight from the Bay, is joined by his best friend and fellow junior Peter Nguyen as they talk about the Bay Area, hip-hop, skateboarding, and whatever else comes up when two friends record together for 25 minutes or so.

This week we conclude our two-part discussion with ecologist Mark Ritchie of Syracuse University on how he and his SFI collaborators are starting to rethink the intersections of thermodynamics and biology to better fit our scientific models to the patterns we observe in nature. Most of what we know about the enzymatic processes of plant and animal metabolisms comes from test tube experiments, not studies in the context of a living organism. What changes when we zoom out and think about life's manufacturing and distribution in situ?Starting where we left off in in Episode 62, we tour the implications of Mark's biochemistry research and ask: What can studying the metabolism of cells tell us about economics? How does a better model of photosynthesis change the way we think about climate change and the future of agriculture? Why might a pattern in the failure of plant enzymes help biologists define where to direct the search for life in space?A better theory of the physics of biomolecules — and the networks in which they're embedded — provides a clearer understanding of the limits for all living systems, and how those limits shape effective strategies for navigating our complex world.Welcome to COMPLEXITY, the official podcast of the Santa Fe Institute. Tao Te Ching Verse 56translated by Chang Chung-YuanOne who is aware does not talk. One who talks is not aware.Ceasing verbal expressions,Stopping the entry of sensations,Dulling its sharpness,Releasing its entanglements,Tempering its brightness,And unifying with the earth:This is called the identity of Tao.Hence, no nearness can reach her nor distance affect her.No gain can touch her nor loss disturb her.No esteem can move her nor shame distress her. Thus, she is the most valuable person in the world.Photo by Peter Nguyen on UnsplashBeing careful to not Kiss and TellI feel like after all we’ve been considering for the past 5 episodes, Lao Tzu provides us with a final thought. And it seems to be this: Don’t kiss and tell with the universe.I don't know about you, but I have experienced some true, correct, and wonderful things and feelings along my journey with the Tao. There have been times when I just want to tell everybody about how cool it all is. Perhaps I’ve had an experience when I felt intimately connected with my environment. Perhaps I’ve experienced using the creative power of the Tao. Perhaps I’ve grown a little and have had paradigm shifting insights. Um, yeah I want to tell people about it. My world just changed - how can I not talk about it?But I started noticing something when I would tell people about my adventures. And it wasn’t because I became super aware of it on my own, either. It was this verse and other sources - that hinted to me that I shouldn’t be going around and blabbing about my growth. But why? I asked. Isn’t this joyful? Isn’t this something I should be sharing? You can, said the Tao, you can share all you want. But guess what happens when you do? You take the power out of what you have received and you will feel that that joy you have dissipates more quickly. So yes, I have learned that when I have paradigm-shifting experiences because of my efforts to move into Harmony, if I want to hold on to those lessons and make them a part of me, I must stay quiet about them. That’s just my experience - yours may look different. All I know is now, despite the temptation I have to talk about it, I am better off if I hold it inside and accept whatever has occurred as a precious, personal gift. Now, does that mean I withhold information or my experience with people when they ask? I don’t think so - of course, we are here to help each other. But I must be careful about oversharing - and not just because I’ll diminish the beauty of my gift, either. I can also be practicing compassion simultaneously when I am judicious about what I share and don’t. Have you noticed that sometimes someone may not be ready to hear what you have to say? I have, for sure. I haven’t been ready to hear things from others, also! The Tao, it seems, prompts us to act and to talk when its time in the manner and depth it specifies. So I don’t need to go out of my way to not share - this stuff isn’t secret, nor is it meant to be. It is given freely to those who are ready and willing to receive it. So I may allow my experiences to come up in conversation, and if I’m asked, I can share about the bigger picture. When I share out of willingness to give freely and not because I want people to know, I retain my gift and pass it on to others in the way that they need in that moment.
Last week we talked about the outward expression of masculinity. This week we looking inward. Peter is a co worker of mine with a story that he has not told many people about, he is a refugee who fled Vietnam in the 1980s with his family as a young boy. Peter wanted to bring his story to the world as a form of closure, as well as being able to have something which he can expose to his young children when they are older so they can understand what he went through at such a young age. We spoke about how it took them three attempts to make it out of the country, how he was tortured after being captured after the second try, and what he remembers about his brutal journey to freedom. It's a heart wrenching story, and regardless of your opinion about refugees, Peter's story will shine a light on how difficult it is for a refugee to seek a new life in a safer country. ***Some of the content in this episode may distress some listeners. If you feel that you have been affected by what you have listened to, please contact your local crisis hotline*** After we finished recording, Peter told me about his younger brother named Nguyen Trieu Thien Quang who went missing during one of the trips. He is presumed dead but Peter is hoping that he may still be out there.
