In Episode 3 of The Untold Stories of Pharmacy Students, we meet third-year student, Hikmat Kazeem, who's rewriting what success looks like in pharmacy education. Like many pharmacy students, Hikmat's path wasn't straightforward. Today, she's BPSA's Western Area Coordinator and proving that sometimes the most challenging beginnings lead to the most inspiring journeys. This episode dives deep into the realities of pharmacy student life. But it's what she did next that makes her story powerful - transforming that setback into motivation to ace her remaining seven exams.Beyond academics, Hikmat's story is a masterclass in building a balanced student life. As the only hijabi player on her university netball team, she's breaking barriers and showing how sports can be crucial for mental health during intense study periods. Her adventures extend globally - from a marketing internship in Hong Kong to upcoming medical volunteering in India - proving that pharmacy education can be a launch pad for diverse experiences. What sets this episode apart is Hikmat's refreshing perspective on the future. While many students feel pressured to have their entire career mapped out, she advocates for living in the present and exploring widely - whether that's earning a British Sign Language qualification or seeking international opportunities. I want to inspire you to use your voice to help the pharmacy profession. Two things inspired this episode: (1) A line from the 2008 Batman movie, The Dark Knight and (2) walkouts at large chain retail pharmacies this month (October 2023) in the US. Problems with the profession are all over the news, but what do large chain retail pharmacists, pharmacy techs, and pharmacy students want? Let's be concrete about what we want and advocate for it. People come together in times of crisis. Join your state pharmacist organization and/or join APhA (American Pharmacists Association). Let's band together now. Use your voice. Do something today. The audience for this podcast is typically pharmacists, pharmacy students, pharmacy technicians, pharmacy professors, pharmacy owners, and medical narrators. Today, I'm targeting anyone from the list who works in large chain retail pharmacy. Thank you for listening to episode 247 of The Pharmacist's Voice ® Podcast! One of the speakers at the Nextmed Health Conference 2023 said: “In the past, people didn't age; they just died.” This is still a daily reality in many low-income countries, which face a lack of workforce, poor healthcare system structure, and lack of resources. In this episode, we will learn about Nigeria. Nigeria has 220 million people which is roughly ⅔ of the population of the US. While many healthcare-related resources are scarce, the Internet is available and so is the fierce ambition of local entrepreneurs. These use digital tools to bring healthcare information and care closer to patients or to upskill the workforce. So what does care in Nigeria look like? What challenges do startups face? Where do they get investments? Highlights from our interview At the June 2023 Medipreneurs Summit in Kansas City, MO, Dr. Brigette Serfaty introduced me to a combination of mindfulness, meditation, and sound healing. I experienced loud chords of sound from crystal bowls, but I was also able to focus on the meditation portion of the experience. I liked it. Dr. Serfaty works with a variety of individuals at the intersection of mindset and well being: Students and faculty at The University of Arkansas Busy professionals (including healthcare professionals, like pharmacists) Group trainings Retreats There is evidence to support that mindfulness works. KORU is a mindfulness app Dr. Serfaty uses with her students. The Oura Ring https://ouraring.com/ has meditations inside their app as well; data is available to show measurable (heart rate) changes while meditating. We discussed Positive Intelligence Training and the Saboteur Assessment. The results give names to the voices in your head. Once you know your saboteurs, you can be more mindful about which voices you listen to and the mindset you adopt. Perfection and imposter syndrome were part of our conversation. Normalizing failure helps others, especially students, understand that failure is a learning tool - not a barrier to success. Failure is painful, but it's part of learning. Brigette has a YouTube Podcast called Minding Your Minutes. She hosts a variety of guests, including wellness practice owners and lifestyle medicine practitioners. The content is conversational, educational, and sometimes cathartic. The name of the Podcast (Minding Your Minutes) is reminder that mindfulness can take just minutes. Zack is currently serving as a hematology/oncology medical science liaison (MSL) with Kyowa Kirin (primary focus in hematologic malignancies). His previous experience included supporting GSK Oncology in a similar liaison capacity. Prior to these field medical roles, Zack had a brief stint in medical writing with Vaniam Group (oncology-focused scientific communications). Zack's first role after pharmacy school came as a clinical content position where he supported and helped to manage the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Cancer Protocols. He was able to work alongside pathologists and key opinion leaders (KOLs) who were cancer subspecialty experts and the authors of these protocols. The Cancer Protocols are used by pathologists worldwide as guidelines for collecting and reporting information on malignant tumor classification, histology, grading, staging, margins, nodal involvement, metastatic disease, biomarker profiles, etc. The Cancer Protocols serve as the gold standard in reporting for not only accreditation purposes but are also instrumental in driving the direction of care as a patient begins the journey from a cancer diagnosis to treatment and beyond.
Burnout. It's a word we've all heard and we have likely experienced, especially in the last 2 years. It's okay to say you're burnt out. It's okay to say you're tired, you don't like your job, or that you're not happy. I've been there and so many others have. Alex Barker is the Founder of The Happy PharmD. After his PharmD, he set out like most of us do to find a decent. After his residency, he worked as an ambulatory care pharmacist where he realized he didn't love his job. That feeling of being stuck allowed him to channel a business on the side. The Happy PharmD was created to help other pharmacists find jobs they love and to be proud of their careers. Alex and his team of coaches help pharmacists find new roles and make pivots in their careers. He's also the author of the Indispensable: The Prescription for a Fulfilling Pharmacy Career and he talks a lot about imposter syndrome, burnout, and the pharmacy profession overall. Join us in a conversation about finding fulfilling work, building and running your own business, and facing imposter syndrome.

As Pharmacists, we're all familiar with Medicaid and Medicare services to an extent. We've processed a claim through them before, have told patients about Open Enrollment, and hear about it quite regularly. However, what's it like being a pharmacist for human services and health care programs. Dr. Fatima Ali is the Senior Pharmacy Director of Medicaid Pharmacy Services at Commonwealth of Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services. She graduated from Philadelphia College of Pharmacy in May 2018 with her PharmD. Since then, Fatima has worked in the managed care setting. She completed a one-year residency at Horizon NJ Health in Pennington, NJ. Horizon NJ Health is the largest Medicaid MCO in New Jersey serving over 800,000 members. Thereafter, Fatima worked for RxAdvance, a small PBM based out of Massachusetts. In August 2020, Fatima joined Kentucky DMS as the Associate Pharmacy Director where she managed the pharmacy benefit for MCO and FFS members.
Content. I feel like that's a buzzword we all hear a lot more of lately. Whether it relates to content creators, social media, or we ourselves consume content. We see content on Instagram, we scroll and scroll on Tiktok, and even on LinkedIn now. There's also all of the content that we read in the forms of articles, blog posts, interviews, etc in written form. It goes beyond beauty, fashion, and music. There's a huge need and space for health content specifically. If you've ever wanted to get into health content writing, this episode is for you. Megan Freeland set out on her own to build a health content marketing company. Through StockRose Creative, LLC, Megan supports innovative health organizations to develop culturally-relevant content for digital health companies and health information websites. At the same time, Megan runs the Health Professionals to Health Writers program, which helps pharmacists and other health care providers learn how to replace a portion of their income through freelance health content writing. Earlier this year, Megan also began lending her talents to an in-house communications team for the nation's leading provider of sexual and reproductive health care and education.Megan earned her PharmD from Mercer University and upon graduation, she started working in regulatory affairs. She was then an ORISE Fellow in Health Communications. Shortly after, she started contributing blogs and health content to different organizations. Tune in to listen to how she got to where she is and what it's like working in this industry.

Kelley is passionate about oncology and sees a growing need for more pharmacists to be trained in this specialty.Kelley D. HelixTalk - Rosalind Franklin University's College of Pharmacy Podcast
In this episode, we discuss pharmaceutical industry career paths with Dr. Anastasiya Koshkina, a graduate of the RFUMS College of Pharmacy and Associate Director and Clinical Scientist at The Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson. Key Concepts When preparing for the fellowship application process, do your homework on the sector(s) you plan to apply for. It is crucial that you have a cohesive and logical story for why you are applying and what makes you a good fit for the position. Strong clinical knowledge is important in the pharmaceutical industry even though there are no traditional direct patient care interactions. Postgraduate pharmaceutical fellowship programs are looking for applicants with strong academics (high GPA), leadership experience in extracurricular, and research experiences. Pharmacy fellowship programs are specific to a sector of a pharmaceutical company (e.g. medical affairs, regulatory affairs, research and development, etc.).. Unlike with pharmacy residencies, fellowships may or may not have rotations; if rotations exist, they are usually many months in length. The team (the people you will be working with) are an essential component of a position. It is much better to work with a team that is supportive and committed to your professional development than to have a seemingly perfect job but be part of a team that is not supportive. The people are everything!
It's no surprise that provider status has been on the radar for the pharmacy profession for quite some time. As roles and responsibilities of pharmacists expand, especially during the pandemic where workload and expectations are even higher, pharmacists are asking for the reimbursement they deserve on the clinical care that they provide. While we don't have national provider status quite yet, several pharmacists and companies use their clinical expertise and get paid for it. One such pharmacist is Dr. Dipal Soni, who is a board-certified ambulatory care pharmacist and co-founder of Core Care Rx. Her company offers an array of different concierge clinical pharmacy services. After completing her PharmD at Rutgers, Dr. Dipal Soni went on to pursue one year of pharmacy practice residency at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in NJ. During this time she worked alongside physicians in ambulatory clinics such as the Heart Failure Clinic, Transitions Of Care, and Pulmonary Clinic where she managed complex medications. While studying for her board certification, she realized how quickly the landscape of healthcare was changing from fee-for-service reimbursement to the value-based care model. She wanted to be a part of this movement and help patients improve their quality of life and reduce physician burnout simultaneously, and that's why she co-founded Core Care Rx.

We know pharmacists' skill sets provide the opportunity to wear many hats and the potential to work in several different industries and roles. Outside of our traditional roles, pharmacists provide value in a wide range of different industries and organizations — including federal agencies. The government employs pharmacists in several different agencies including Indian Health Services, Food and Drug Administration, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But if you're a pharmacist who has historically worked in a traditional setting, you might be wondering how one finds a role at one of these agencies. One pharmacist decided to step away from community pharmacy to pursue a different career path after 3 years in retail. CDR Jennifer N. Lind is a Pharmacist and Epidemiologist in Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Medication Safety Program and a Commander in the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. CDR Lind received her PharmD from Florida A&M University in 2007 and Master of Public Health from Georgia State University in 2012. After receiving her MPH, she completed a two-year fellowship as an Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) officer in CDC's National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, making her the 7th pharmacist overall and 2nd female pharmacist to complete this program.Following EIS, she worked in CDC's Birth Defects Branch and eventually became the Lead Scientist for CDC's Treating for Two initiative. CDR Lind's current work in CDC's Medication Safety Program focuses on reducing harms from the use of medications by tracking adverse drug events nationally and using these data to improve medication safety through targeted, collaborative interventions.
The pharmacy profession is one of the few professions dominated by women. More than ⅔ of pharmacists today are female. Despite the majority, there are still pay gaps, limitations in leadership, and obstacles that women face in the profession. What's it truly like being a woman in pharmacy? March is Women's History Month, so we're speaking with one of the biggest champions for women pharmacists in the profession to share her story, the challenges she faced, and how non-female pharmacists can better support their colleagues.Dr. Suzanne Soliman started the Pharmacist Mom Group, the largest organization of women pharmacists in the United States, in 2017. Today, there are 35,000 members and 85,000 followers across social media. Suzanne, a mother of 5, was searching for a community to discuss mom-related topics after she missed one of her son's sports games because of work. When she couldn't find one, she decided to create her own. Suzanne has worked in clinical pharmacy, industry, and academia. She's actively supporting and advocating for women and the pharmacy profession.

Welcome back for the final episode of 2020! This week we are featuring Anjali Talwar, Second Year Pharmacy Student at the Gregory School of Pharmacy of Palm Beach Atlantic University. Anjali is a friend I met in undergrad at Florida State University (#GoNoles) and was so kind to share her journey to choosing Pharmacy as her career. What I love most about Anjali's story is how she authentically highlights one of the biggest struggles that we can face in pursuing a career--making a career change. Countless of times, I had friends get stuck (sometimes for years) in pursuing a career that they initially thought was for them, the career they spoke about for years, the career their parents wanted for them, etc. Despite receiving several signs to reroute, they insist on that career that in the end they realize was not for them. As a woman who matriculated in an international/Caribbean medical school and did an entire semester, Anjali made a brave move to pack up and leave the island. She tells how about that experience and how she reevaluated her life and goals to select the right career for her. Anjali is passionate about the collaboration of medical professionals, especially Pharmacy, and their impact and role in healthcare. I hope you enjoy this episode just as much as I did! RXVIP Concierge is partnering with CareSignal, a remote patient monitoring company, to provide accurate COVID-19 information and support to the community using three accessible text messaging platforms designed for patients and pharmacists. Additionally, NeedyMeds has created a new COVID-19 resource center, listing organizations that are offering help with healthcare costs and financial hardships for those impacted by the virus. "Like millions of Americans, I myself want accurate and timely information on the COVID-19 virus so that I can deal with the feeling of isolation caused by the pandemic. I am also challenged with multiple chronic disease states that require medication management and care coordination," said Ken Sternfeld, Chief Pharmacist Officer of RXVIP Concierge. He added, "We all need companions and connections during these unsettling times. As a pharmacist who has always focused on patient engagement, this partnership with CareSignal aligns perfectly with my personal and professional values. NeedyMeds was our first partner when we started RXVIP, so we are pleased that they have joined us in this initiative to offer their great resources and support for patients. The creation of our new patient initiative, 'Stand Up To COVID19,' allows us to connect the next generation of PharmD providers with CareSignal's remote patient monitoring tool." COVID Companion, COVID Connect and COVID Staff Support support thousands of patients and front-line clinical staff by leveraging credible resources and enabling users to effectively monitor their symptoms. COVID Companion is a community-facing, text-message-based platform that shares information about local public health resources and recommendations from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). COVID Connect is a patient-facing, text-based platform that allows patients to self-monitor their symptoms at home. If their symptoms worsen, the tool automatically connects patients to the CDC's COVID-19 hotline. COVID Staff Support is a provider-facing, text-based platform that makes it easy for healthcare workers to self-monitor symptoms of COVID-19, offers a resource for reporting burnout and gives healthcare providers access to mental health resources. All three programs are available free of charge to United States healthcare organizations. "Being asked to help PharmD 2020 candidates graduate now so they can take a leadership role in our StandUp2Covid19 campaign is a tremendous honor," stated the newly appointed RXVIP National Brand Ambassador Nabila Ismail. "So much has changed since I entered the pharmacy profession just last year, but our purpose as pharmacists always is to help the patient," she added. "Now is the time for us to secure our position as true health care providers at a time that patients need us. My focus will be to raise awareness through community social engagement so the next generation can enter the profession at a time when their dedication to patient care and skill set will help save lives," Ismael concluded. Those who wish to subscribe to COVID Companion can text "RXVIP" to 67634. COVID Companion is available in English and Spanish. The tool will ask basic questions of users in order to provide COVID-19 information that is specific to their needs. Users will receive: CDC-recommended prevention tips and recommendations on what to do if they experience COVID-19 symptoms Ways to connect with public health resources in their local area Users over the age of 60 and those who have chronic diseases are directed to the CDC information specifically directed at high-risk populations

#pharmacyschool can create a lot of excellent opportunities…and challenges. #Anxiety is one of the biggest obstacles that pharmacy students face—especially for those looking to really dive deep and grow early on in their career. While every pharmacy student faces anxiety in one form or another, nobody is really talking about it or sharing practical strategies for HOW to overcome one of the biggest emotional barriers faced in pharmacy school. That's why in this episode I am excited to share the story of a pharmacy student I met when I was in Ireland speaking at Trinity College at Dublin, Lauren O'Reilly. With experience in the community, hospital, and research settings of pharmacy, her passions for health topics run deep, including promoting positive mental health and reducing the stigma around mental illness. Episode 21: How to Become a Pharmacist w. Fazleabbas Poonawala Featuring: Fazleabbas Poonawala, Pharmacist Mentor Bio: Fazleabbas Poonawala is a board certified pharmacist with licenses for NJ and NY. I practiced retail pharmacy for about a year and then transitioned to work in the pharmaceutical industry, working in the field of drug safety for about 7 years. Now I help create and support the processes that ensure adverse event reports reach the company and are reported to worldwide health authorities on time. Industry Overview: What do Pharmacists do? Pharmacists dispense prescription medications to patients and offer expertise in the safe use of prescriptions. They also may conduct health and wellness screenings, provide immunizations, oversee the medications given to patients, and provide advice on healthy lifestyles. What does their work environment look like? Pharmacists work in pharmacies, including those in drug, general merchandise, and grocery stores. They also work in hospitals and other healthcare facilities. How do you become a Pharmacist? All pharmacists must earn a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) from an accredited school in order to practice. Postsecondary courses in your studies will include chemistry, biology and anatomy. Most students have three years of college experience or a bachelor’s degree upon entering pharmacy school. They must also be licensed, which requires passing two exams. Keep in mind In 2012, graduates entering the workforce had an average student loan debt of$123,063. What additional skills that they typically don’t teach in school do you need? Following graduation from a Pharm.D. program, pharmacists seeking an advanced position, such as a clinical pharmacy or research job, may need to complete a 1- to 2-year residency. Pharmacists who choose to complete the 2-year residency option receive additional training in a specialty area such as internal medicine or geriatric care. All states license pharmacists. After they finish the Pharm.D. program, prospective pharmacists must pass two exams to get a license. The North American Pharmacist Licensure Exam (NAPLEX) tests pharmacy skills and knowledge. The Multi-state Pharmacy Jurisprudence Exam (MPJE) or a state-specific test on pharmacy law is also required. Applicants also must complete a number of hours as an intern, which varies by state. What is the pay? The median annual wage for pharmacists was $122,230 in May 2016. Future demand in marketplace? Employment of pharmacists is projected to grow 6 percent from 2016 to 2026, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Increased demand for prescription medications will lead to more demand for pharmaceutical services. Overall… Pharmacists rank #20 in Best Paying Jobs. #23 in best healthcare jobs, and #45 in the best 100 jobs according to US news which ranks them based on 5 categories (salary, job market, future growth, stress, and work-life balance). With Anesthesiologist, Surgeon, and Obstetrician and Gynecologist ranking as the top 1-3 best paying jobs and dentist, physician assistant, and nurse practitioner ranking 1,2,3 in the healthcare industry. The number of pharmacy schools has grown in recent years, creating more pharmacy school graduates and therefore more competition for jobs.
