We are all in for a special treat today, as life empowerment coach, enneagram guide, trainer, speaker, and freedom creatrix, Jessica Denise Dickson, joins me on the podcast. Jessica believes that when Black women heal, the world heals, and that the path to personal and collective healing comes through embodying our enneagram and liberation work, which, in turn, echoes into our communities and beyond, changing the world. She is so very much the perfect example of someone who doesn't settle, and I know that you are going to absolutely love her just as much as I do as you listen in today. As with all guests these days, we start by finding out how she is really doing currently, and then we explore Jessica's journey to the work she does along with the lessons she has learned through her varied work experiences. She details what it means to live out her faith, how growing up as a preacher's kid (PK) has shaped and informed her, the impact of purity culture, and anti-racism. We also look at various aspects regarding enneagram work including some misconceptions about it, how it helps people to do the work of liberation, and precisely what it is and is not. This is a conversation that goes deep, delves into so many crucial topics, and, thanks to the passion and mastery which Jessica brings to her work, is undoubtedly going to give you the chills. Speaking of deep and rewarding conversations, enrollment for my next Ascend Mastermind is now open, which, in response to some valuable feedback I've received, will now be a six month program starting at the end of the summer. If you're a high achieving entrepreneur or high level professional who is ready to uplevel your health and well-being (mental, emotional, physical) while creating and pursuing goals you actually want then this Mastermind is the perfect opportunity for you. You'll get to strengthen your habits, get clear on what you want and be held accountable by, and find support among like-minded women as you ascend. Check out the details here: www.kellytravis.net/ascend, and if you would like to hear first hand from someone who has actually gone through one of my Ascend Masterminds, let me know and we can make that happen as well. As always, if there is ever a topic you would like me to discuss or a guest you'd like me to interview on the podcast, please feel free to contact me at pr@kellytravis.net - I would love to hear from you!   The Finer Details of This Episode:   How Jessica is really doing these days   Jessica's journey to her current work   Lessons she learned during her varied work experiences   Living out her faith   How being a preacher's kid (PK) shaped her   Joshua Harris' I Kissed Dating Goodbye   Purity culture   Misconceptions regarding the enneagram   Her current work   Anti-racism   Sonya Renee Taylor's The Body Is Not an Apology   How the enneagram helps people do the work of liberation   What the enneagram is and what it's not   Quotes: “The service that I'm providing for people is something that I have been doing for a while, but the business part of it is super new.” “When I was growing up, I was called an Oreo - black on the outside, white on the inside.” “What I believe is that God created us, that there is a being that we were created by. I do believe that, and that God created us to be human, and to be fully human.” “We get to live the beauty and nuance of the lives that we have.” “Living out our faith is reclaiming the fullness of our humanity and allowing space for others to, as well, while figuring out what there is to be faithful to.” “We're fearfully and wonderfully made.” “The Church has been a big source of the perpetuation of white supremacy as an institution.” “I started my business really, from this idea that when Black women heal, that the world heals.” “We don't just work for ourselves, we bring everyone along. It gives us a chance to really reclaim all of who we are.” “We do a lot of work around the nervous system and how the nervous system is programmed by white supremacy.” “My work is not just finding a better way to express myself, it's actually looking and seeing ‘Okay, what are the ways that I know I'm going to be perceived because of white supremacy?' ” “Our souls were created to be more than just surviving or even trying to thrive in white supremacy.”   Show Links: Kelly's homepage -  http://www.kellytravis.net Ascend Mastermind -  www.kellytravis.net/ascend      Research resources: Jessica's Homepage Jessica's Facebook Jessica's Instagram Jessica's Business Instagram Jessica's Linktree The Body Is Not an Apology

We all have a reason for the things we do in life, right?  A reason for why we chase after certain dreams, aspire for perfect careers, pray for specific relationships, set goals for our bodies, but...WHY? The why is so important because it's what separates mere interest or intrigue from passion and purpose. The Oasis Space isn't just a hobby for me.  It's a lifestyle.  It's an experience.  I am The Oasis Space, and The Oasis Space is me.  The Oasis Space is a physical manifestation of me walking in my purpose. So, in this season finale episode, I thought it was only fitting to wrap up by sharing with my fellow Peace Pursuits my story...my "why."   I realize I've shared many stories with you about chaos that disrupted in others' lives, but have yet to let you into my world when that pivotal moment of chaos led me to peace. In my story of heartache, pain, disappointment, and identity crisis, I hope the major takeaway that you gain from it is that there is greatness on the other side & a method to Unleash The Peace!LINKS:Engage with Patrice:www.sociatap.com/ThePeaceCuratorInstagram: http://www.instagram.com/ThePeaceCuratorEmail: theoasisspace@patricegrimes.comFollow My Live Like a Local (LLAL) Tour Journey!IG Stories: http://www.instagram.com/ThePeaceCuratorYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvcsC5TX-mjEUGjOk1ZowjQJoin The Oasis Space - PEACE PURSUITS FB Community:https://www.facebook.com/groups/theoasisspaceTo advertise on the podcast:Email: TheOasisSpace@patricegrimes.comIf you have questions about booking Patrice or sponsoring the podcast:Email: TheOasisSpace@patricegrimes.comSupport the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/TheOasisSpace)

Brandi Holmes is a Makeup Artist, Skin Expert, a Singer and a Preachers Kid. (I added PK to her list of skills because having the right foundation is beyond skin deep.) Upon her return to the studio, we discuss answered prayers to marry, start new businesses, enhance new talents and she helps me discuss my long delayed conversation of divorce. Together we dive into relationships; with God and with our husbands, and evaluate ourselves as wives. A few months ago Brandi and I enjoyed drinks and dinner to catch up. Covid had us all in the house so when social butterflies can flutter, we like to spread our wings. Our chat turned into us closing down the restaurant! In that conversation, Brandi mentioned that I needed to talk about my divorce and how awkward it is to just remove photos from social media without an explanation. I still wanted my privacy but I agreed that it needed to be done and here is the conversation that I share with you, with the help of Brandi. She also offers me some dating do's and don'ts and we discuss our challenges in this new arena. Sometimes you think that your prayers will lead you to the perfect person but the reality is that we are all broken. May we trust God to equip us with the skills to love others in their brokenness as well as identify and correct our own flaws that are made visible to us. Instead of concealing, I have chose healing. We hope that this message can help in your healing, too.  Listen now to Part 2, “The REAL Housewives, The Reunion” episode. A new podcast returns next Friday.

Preacher's Kid by Semler, whose artist name is Grace Baldridge, hit No. 1 on Tuesday (Feb. 9) in Apple's iTunes store. It marked the first time an LGBTQ+ artist has topped the album sales in Christian music.  Preacher's Kid isn't your typical worship album. It carries a parental advisory for explicit lyrics and speaks openly and rawly about Baldridge's evolving faith since her youth. For me, it was like fresh air in an industry that has come to be defined by blandness and homogeny. Semler was the first Christian artist, I've appreciated in years. Her honesty is reminiscent of David' messy, beautiful truth captured in Psalms.  For so long has Christian art been whitewashed and tamed. It's been far too long since we've heard something so truthful and it feels even feels dangerous in its truth-telling. The album is, as Baldriged puts it, “a project about coming out as a queer person of faith.” The album was also a personal project produced without a label and industry marketing dollars but became a grassroots movement. This album is a hopeful sign that Christianity is slowly changing, but it's also a reminder that we have far to go before we can be a faith that's affirming and loving of all people.  Join me today as I unpack this album with Semler and delve deeper into her work and advocacy. It's a great conversation with someone whose story needs to be heard. Movies and songs have been published about this. Jokes are told about it. Books written. But I have lived it. I'm a preacher's kid. And, yes - a church brat too. There are positives and negatives to this reality. Even in the Bible we have MANY examples (both good and bad) of PKs - minister's kids who did really well, or very poorly. On this week's episode Patrick and Dave are joined by Dave's youngest child, Elijah. Spend an hour with them thinking about the unique blessings and burdens that come with growing up in a preacher's home.

In the Beauty, Fashion and Entertainment industries the standard of beauty is constantly evolving, but for Denise and Janice Tunnell beauty is not just skin deep. With over 16 years each of experience working on the faces of Hollywood's most sought after celebrities, these ladies are ushering in a new approach to makeup and skincare both on and off camera. The twin sisters were born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. They each received Accounting and Business Management degrees from North Carolina State University, before moving into the world of beauty to freelance for high-profile brands such as “Giorgio Armani”, “Bobbi Brown”, “MAC” and “Smashbox Cosmetics”; honing their skills while taking the Film and TV world by storm. Collectively, they have touched the faces of Gabrielle Union, Shailene Woodley, Anthony Mackey, Roselyn Sanchez, Carmelo Anthony, Regina King, Taraji P. Henson, Kerry Washington, Terrance Howard, Josh Henderson, Rosie O' Donnell, Esai Morales, Margaret Cho, Dania Ramirez, Idris Elba, and Michael Clarke Duncan to name a few. The sisters have worked behind the scenes of the silver screen and tv on fan favorites like “Stomp the Yard”, “Hustle and Flow”, “Ladder 49”, “The Wedding Crashers”, “Big Fish”, “Step Up”, “Preachers Kid”, “The Wire”, “Vampire Diaries”, ”The Hunger Games” and many more. Their innovative approach to everything from skincare to makeup application and style tips gives the ladies an edge over the competition and allowing them to connect with their public on a more personal level Early in their careers the sisters recognized how impactful their knowledge of skincare and makeup techniques could be to the masses, as well as the need for more options for women of color. So in 2006, “Illusions Cosmetics” was created and introduced to the world as a full line of color cosmetics for all women of color. From foundations to lip color, Illusions Cosmetics covers it all and promises to enhance all that is beautiful in you. May I ask How Long Lord? I want to start off saying that my heart is burdened for the people who I can see in their eyes they are hurting and sunken in pain, but still decide to keep swimming each day. I felt a chill in the air that was very unusual today. It caught my attention. I see people are still busy building artificial lives just to make ends meet, and I see people are still not getting the bigger picture that he could care less about your image, but the relationship you are building with him. This was very spontaneous for me to get on today and record because I could feel the hearts of others who are hurting right now. I saw another one of my friends lying in a hospital bed who I know is an Angel sent from above, who is suffering right now with a tumor. This is what made me get a slight attitude about the world's dilemma. I honestly thank God that he is still blessing me, and still in perfect health, but the people are turning cold. Please Lord, vindicate your people! It's our time! The evil doers time is up! We have had enough of the bad news, Lord! Wait Lord, my hands are up, don't shoot!

Today I speak with Ronna Russell, author of "The Uncomfortable Confessions of a Preacher's Kid". Ronna describes her story as "a childhood controlled by the brutal hand of a narcissistic, closeted homosexual. I believed I could leave my upbringing behind and walk away unscathed. I married a closeted homosexual man, in hopes he could keep me safe. As our sex life and bank account dwindled to nothing, fear kept me silent. In the meantime, my father died of AIDs. The pain of his death fractured my biological family, and I clung to my husband and children, creating a cocoon that became a prison. Eventually, I was forced to see my husband’s homosexuality and refusal to work, realizations that brought me to the breaking point. I found the courage to be alone, to take care of my children no matter the cost, and the joy of my own sexual freedom. In the process, I fell in love with my own life".

Thank you for tuning into our new series titled, "Diary of a Preachers Kid"Which is A non-religious take on faith from someone one who is trapped in two worlds. This series will be teaching you on how to live a more fulfilled life and help guide you on the right path spiritually to become your full potential and live out your bold purpose! Today we are addressing the great divide that is happening here in the spiritual realm, among the people and the church in this new millinium. Millennials are leaving religion — especially Christianity — and they’re not going back. The church has faced consistent struggles over the past centuries, and one particular struggle may cause a future epidemic. Research indicates Millennials (individuals ages 22-37 in 2018) have been leaving the church in great numbers. Study shows 59% of millennials raised in church have already left. In 2019, roughly two-thirds attend worship services “a few times a year” or less, and some say they never go. A decade ago, it was more than half. Whats really going on? There have been worries members of the younger generation are turning to religions such as Islam or practicing atheism. However, CBN News recently reported on the growth of the "None" movement. "Nones" are people identifying themselves as having no religious affiliation. Many believe there is a God but have lost the desire to be affiliated with a religion. Today I’m with special guest Dr. Jamal Bryant who is the senior pastor at mega church New Birth M. B. “My biggest thing, since I was a kid, has been authenticity. I think you can write a song that means something to just you, and that, most of the time, will end up relating to most people. They might not have lived that story, but they can relate it to something in their own life. ” In this episode, John sits down with Grammy-nominated artist, Rhett Walker. Rhett is a down-to-earth family man, who grew up as a preacher’s kid in South Carolina. While he was raised in church, Rhett shares about his personal journey of recognizing the need to find Jesus for himself. As a worship leader, songwriter, and touring artist, Rhett has a well-rounded experience in music. “So many times with music… we spend a lot of time adding things, and not sharing the space that a song actually needs… It’s important to be authentic in how we play the songs.” Rhett formed the Rhett Walker Band in 2011, after moving to Nashville to pursue his passion for music. In 2012 his song, “When Mercy Found Me,” was nominated for Best Contemporary Christian Music Song. Throughout this episode, Rhett gives practical and profound advice in regards to songwriting and musicianship. The underlying message is authenticity, being true to who you are, and letting that resonate in the music that you create. “Don’t just try to write pretty words… Don’t say something cliche just because it sounds cool… It might be just one song out of a hundred that has success, but that one out of a hundred will be the most ‘you’ song, that only you could write.” Some topics we talk about in this episode: Introduction // Rhett Walker - 0:39 Rhett’s Early Influences- 3:36 Rhett’s Start with Music- 7:53 “When Mercy Found Me”- 15:28 Upcoming Music Release- 22:12 Rhett’s Songwriting Process- 26:30 Rhett’s Music Team- 31:00 Advice for Aspiring Songwriters- 36:40 How to Connect with Rhett- 39:02 Wrap Up - 40:14 How to get involved Join the Successful Christian Songwriters Group on Facebook and continue the discussion! https://www.facebook.com/groups/SuccessfulChristianSongwriters/ Check out all of the resources for you to become the songwriter you were meant to be at www.nashvillechristiansongwriters.com If you liked this episode, be sure to subscribe and leave a quick review on iTunes. Peter tries to handle some kids who are bullying Ruthie and fails miserably (or succeeds because he works out some weird bargain?). Kevin gets stuck babysitting Detective Michaels granddaughter while Detective Michaels conducts the most convoluted and hilarious sting operation to ever grace television. Chandler appears to be moving on from Roxy pretty quickly but we still don't care.

We begin the discussion with Nova giving his insight on what the album depicts for his listeners. He mentioned it being his life story and how he felt like he let a piece of hisself go with this release. Nova updates us on his relationship status and how having a good woman influences his career. We touch base on some of his musical influences such as Ron Isley, Prince, and his upbringing in the Church, which inspired the title of his album. We later discuss getting older, clairvoyance, & fashion choices. Our favorite segment of DAB, "Marry One, F*** One, Kill One" is back and this week's theme is R&B singers. The DAB Crew and Nova chime in to give us their preferences. This is one you do not want to miss! So sit back and enjoy the crazy world of Dussé and Backwoods. Yay! Yay!

Treigg shares an array of experiences and touches on some fascinating topics. He grew up a Baptist preacher's kid and took the Bible VERY seriously. He later helped with the youth ministry in his mom's church and even had his own church TV show!  Seeds of doubt are planted throughout his life. One begins when he notices his friends parents listening to secular music. This was a major moment for Treigg. His parents only played gospel music. Another seed of doubt is when Treigg begins discussing God's allowance of slavery with an agnostic friend. Treigg has to share his new views with his parents as he realizes how much of his world was wrapped up in religion. His search for community leads to Skeptics of Color in Cincinnati, which evolved into Black Non-Believers of Cincinnati. https://www.facebook.com/treigg https://blacknonbelievers.wordpress.com https://www.anthonypinn.com http://www.haydenplanetarium.org/tyson/ The God Delusion, by Richard Dawkins: https://www.amazon.com/The-God-Delusion/dp/B000LP5E8M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1520402735&sr=8-1&keywords=richard+dawkins+books

Cass and Bob interview a young atheist, gay, blind man named Aaron. His father is a Wesleyan minister in North Carolina. His parents and two siblings, all Christian, do not know he’s gay or atheist. At 20 years of age and being blind, he lives at home and his only connection with people that truly know him and accept him is online.  He’s currently in college; he’s a computer programmer. At no point does Aaron exude any sense of self-pity. In fact, he’s quite chipper. He does, however, help us reap the benefit of better understanding his experience. If you’d like to reach out and connect with Aaron, I’m sure it would life his spirits. His email is pretty simple: aaron@atheist.com.  Also, if you’re wondering how I blind person discovers they’re gay—in a culture driven by looks—we talk about that. Bear with us through the first 3 minutes of the interview; we had some audio problems but it gets better after that. We taped this episode on July 30th, 2016. Losing Our Religion and Ideologies comes in many ways, shapes and forms. Growing up in the south, Florida to be exact, was the beginning of CJ's. Most of us are pretty familiar with the bible beltness of the America South. CJ was a "PK". For those of you that don't know that term - Preacher's Kid. CJ was also an addict, a felon, a convict, and now ex-con, husband, and dad. A life far from the goodie too shoes ideal of a Preacher's Kid, but not too far from the reality of a lot of us that grew up in "ministry" life. He is a constant learner and learned a lot in prison. In case some of my listeners don't know, I am a P.K.(PREACHERS KID). Yes, shocking isn't it? Then again some people would say my life reflects EXACTLY what a PK and any other kid that was raised up going to church a lot is like when they grow up. The total opposite of what they were told to be by their parents. You see sometimes you can be given too much of a good thing. I think this is REALLY the case when raising kids up in church. LET ME BE CLEAR, I love my moms for giving me spiritual guidance and teaching me good moral behavior. But there is a difference between going to church a few Sundays and going 3 to 4 days a week ALL YEAR ROUND. Some people over do it when it comes to making their kids attend church, and it has the reverse effect. You know how they say "church girls be the worse ones", well it's because they are so over protected and scrutinized that once they get out and away from that atmosphere, they feel like finding out what they have been missing, even if it's bad. Actually ESPECIALLY if it's bad since they had to be so "good" all the time for those judgmental eyes watching in the pews. Sometimes if you make a child go to church too much, they get sick of it and start to HATE the very thing you want them to LOVE. So here goes: Do you think making kids go to church A LOT is good or bad? If you had to go often, did you like having to go, or could you not wait until you was grown so you didn't have to go all the time? When you got older did you "wild out" because you felt like you missed something growing up? Where you putting on an act for the church people, meaning you was an Usher on Sunday, but sneak out and got laid on Saturday? Do you think this is good parenting? How do you think it will effect how you raise your kids? Do you not attend church often now as adult as a result of having to a lot as a child? Do you believe "PKs are the worse ones"? Can you really make a child go to church TOO much, or is that the Devil talking?
