About the Lecture In the struggle to adopt the US Constitution, the philosopher Montesquieu's book, Spirit of the Laws, was frequently cited by both proponents and opponents of ratification. Highly regarded at the time of America's founding, this 1748 masterpiece has fallen into unjust neglect which Professor Allen's fresh translation and commentary should do much to rectify. Professor Allen will discuss Montesquieu's thought on matters of special importance for IWP students, including national security, economics, political and constitutional order, and their moral, cultural, and religious implications. Professor Allen will highlight Montesquieu's account of the conflict between freedom and slavery, a conflict which intersects with the greatest questions of our own age. About the Speaker W. B. Allen, Emeritus Professor of Political Philosophy and Dean of James Madison College at Michigan State University, served previously as Chairman of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. He is General Editor of The State of Black of America (2022) and resident scholar and former Chief Operating Officer of the Center for Urban Renewal and Education in Washington, D.C. His latest publication is the newly released Montesquieu's The Spirit of the Laws: A Critical Edition, Parallel Text and Commentary (Anthem Press). Recognized for excellence in liberal education on the 1997 Templeton Honor Roll and as a 2014 Salvatori Prize laureate, he has published extensively, including George Washington: A Collection (Liberty Fund, Inc.), Rethinking Uncle Tom: The Political Philosophy of H. B. Stowe (Lexington Books), George Washington: America's First Progressive (Peter Lang, Inc.) and scores of essays.

Susan H. Allen's Interactive Peacemaking: A People-Centered Approach (Routledge, 2022) examines the theory and practice of interactive peacemaking, centering the role of people in making peace. This book presents the theory and practice of peacemaking as found in contemporary processes globally. By putting people at the center of the analysis, it outlines the possibilities of peacemaking by and for the people whose lives are touched by ongoing conflicts. While considering examples from around the world, this book specifically focuses on peacemaking in the Georgian-South Ossetian context. It tells the stories of individuals on both sides of the conflict, and explores why people choose to make peace, and how they work within their societies to encourage this. This book emphasizes theory built from practice and offers methodological guidance on learning from practice in the conflict resolution field. This book will be of much interest to students and practitioners of peacemaking, conflict resolution, South Caucasus politics and International Relations. The book is available via Routledge Open Access here. Professor Allen also discusses the George Mason University Carter School "Better Evidence Project", more information is available here. Today's episode features Professor Allen Cheng, the Director of the Infection Prevention and Healthcare Epidemiology unit at Alfred Health, Professor of Infectious Diseases Epidemiology at Monash University and the Chair of the Advisory Committee on Vaccines to the Therapeutic Goods Administration and an infectious diseases physician. He is also known to many for his year-long secondment as the Deputy Chief Health Officer of Victoria from July 2020 – June 2021. As Professor Cheng says in today's episode, he has a “very specific skill set.” An infectious diseases clinician specialising in respiratory infections and flu vaccine effectiveness, he was expertly qualified to lead Victoria's public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Professor Cheng talks about the challenges of transitioning from a researcher and clinician to public health practitioner, and the lessons he learnt in the process. He advocates for innovative approaches to public health preparedness, like a “public health reservist core,” and talks about how governments can and should effectively buy and use vaccines and COVID treatments. It's a fascinating discussion and we hope you join the conversation @CentreHealthSec

For Horn Professor Linda Allen, finding solutions to mathematical problems has always been a source of great enjoyment, as has discovering nature's mysteries. These two distinct pursuits combine to form Allen's academic specialties of mathematical biology and mathematical epidemiology. She applies a mathematical context to events arising in ecosystems, particularly the spread of infectious diseases, and her research holds increasing relevance to societies as scientists seek to understand the complexities of disease proliferation. Moreover, Allen helps to ensure that future generations can comprehend such topics by sharing modeling techniques in her undergraduate and graduate math classes, and serving as a presenter in mathematics short courses and workshops for novice and experienced students alike. Allen also involves students in her research projects; currently, she and her students are developing models of immune responses and lytic bacteriophage phenomena. Indeed, engaging with students has been key to Professor Allen's integrated scholarship, and she adds that it continues to be the most enjoyable aspect of her work.

Unless you have engaged in field research, it might be difficult to understand the challenges of a faculty member such as Vivien Allen. Besides requiring extraordinary patience, insight, and forbearance to adjust to factors often out of your control (e.g., weather), when your research also cuts across fields such as animal, plant, and soil sciences, the challenges are magnified—by breath of understanding if nothing else. Yet, Professor Allen has successfully tackled these challenges and more in her work with sustainable agriculture, particularly the co-development and support of animal and plant agriculture, which are all potentially threatened by our declining water resources, changing government policies, environmental concerns, and economic stability. Through the building of a highly diverse and successful team, Texas Tech is home to one of the largest and most productive long-term integrated systems research sites in the U.S. But, through work in such complex systems, Professor Allen has excelled not only in research that has been recognized internationally, but also in the field- and campus-based teaching of her students. And, the notable teaching and research efforts are woven with outreach to the agricultural community in Texas and beyond.

The Context of White Supremacy (C.O.W.S.) Radio Program welcomes Robert L. Allen. The adjunct professor of African-American studies and ethnic studies at the University of California, Berkeley, Professor Allen is an award winning author and activist. He was the senior editor of The Black Scholar: Journal of Black Studies and Research - which examines Racism/White Supremacy and issues related to black people. We'll discuss his 1989 publication, The Port Chicago Mutiny: The Story of the Largest Mass Mutiny Trial in U.S. Naval History. This important bit of World War II history involves black males who worked under reckless and unnecessarily dangerous conditions loading explosives for Whites. After a deadly blast killed hundreds off the coast of California, black males went on strike to save their lives and protest unsafe and inhuman work conditions. Professor Allen documents the many components of White Supremacy within this forgotten event. #TheCOWS13 INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE: 564943#
