South Africa’s “youngtimer” trend continues to gain momentum as more drivers chase the nostalgia of cars from the 80s, 90s and early 2000s. But while the romance of owning an older classic is real, the big question remains whether it is practical and affordable to keep these cars on the road in today’s economy. Oswald Olckers, Supply Chain Executive at the Goldwagen Group with close to twenty-five years in the automotive aftermarket, speaks to Lester Kiewit about the true cost of maintaining an older vehicle versus the value and convenience of a newer car with a motor and service plan, and whether passion can still align with the pocket. ABOUT THE EVENTMusicians For Musicians Celebrates 10 Years of Music Advocacy with Star-Studded Performance Event at The Cutting Room"In this crazy time with so much social-political-cultural turmoil happening here in the US and around the world,” says Ladjevardi, “I firmly believe that musicians' vital role is to speak out for their communities and come up with messages that will create solidarity among a particular group of people and unite them to fight for their cause. Musicians are the most powerful artists whose sounds can have an impact on people's conscience in a second." - Sohrab aka SoSaLaMusicians For Musicians (MFM), a nonprofit association founded in 2015 by saxophonist and activist Sohrab Saadat Ladjevardi aka SoSaLa, emerged from a deep need to organize freelance musicians into a unified voice for fair compensation, labor protection, and industry recognition. Golden Arrow spokesperson Bronwen Dyke-Beyer speaks to Lester Kiewit about the ongoing impact of attacks on the company’s buses in Cape Town. Over the past ten years, more than 100 Golden Arrow buses have been torched during violent protests, criminal acts, and disputes linked to jobs and tenders, leaving commuters stranded and increasing operational and insurance costs for the company. Dyke-Beyer discusses how Golden Arrow responds to these attacks, the safety measures in place for passengers and staff, and the difficulties in holding perpetrators accountable. She also highlights the wider consequences for communities who depend on reliable bus services to access work, school, and essential services, and the broader effect on mobility and public safety in the city.
