Which key foods, vitamins, and daily habits preserve vision and prevent macular degeneration as we age? There is more to the color of the foods that we eat than meets the eye, reveals ophthalmologist Dr. Rani Banik. For example, the macula at the back of the eye draws its yellow color from the carotenoids, lutein, and zeaxanthin in foods like bell peppers and mangos, she says. We need the macula to make out the details of objects: “It's responsible for our highest resolution vision,” says Banik, who emphasizes nutrition in preventing eye conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. It's the lutein and zeaxanthin in egg yolk, she adds, that gives the food its distinctive orangy-yellow color and which make it a source of eye health. “Some of the common summer fruits such as peaches, nectarines—[these] bright yellow, orange ... fruits are very rich in these ocular pigments.” Banik joins Vital Signs with Brendon Fallon to reveal how macular degeneration and other hallmarks of eye damage and aging can be prevented and, in some cases, improved through certain nutrients and living habits. Banik talks about a patient with a family history of blindness, who had just been diagnosed with intermediate-stage macular degeneration. What results did he see from following her “macular-degeneration diet” and making certain lifestyle changes? Which foods and nutrients best preserve eye health? Which type of sunglasses best protect against UV-ray damage to the eyes? We probe these and other aspects of natural eye health on Vital Signs with Brendon Fallon. Banik is a neuro-ophthalmologist and practitioner of functional medicine, which aims at treating the root cause of disease, often through diet and lifestyle change. ⭕️ Watch in-depth videos based on Truth & Tradition at Epoch TV

Dr. Rani Banik is America's Integrative Eye Doctor. She is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained neuro-ophthalmologist with additional training in Integrative and Functional Medicine. Dr. Rani focuses on the root cause of eye diseases, and uses integrative strategies for conditions such as dry eye, thyroid eye disease, macular degeneration, cataract, glaucoma, and other autoimmune diseases of the visual system. She also has a special interest in migraine with visual symptoms, multiple sclerosis, and eye stroke. Her treatments are based on nutrition, botanicals, lifestyle modification, essential oils, and supplements. Dr. Rani runs a private practice based in New York City and is also Associate Professor of Mount Sinai in NYC where she serves as an educator and researcher. As Principal Investigator of several clinical trials in diseases of the optic nerve, Dr. Rani uses cutting-edge approaches such as nanotechnology and gene therapy. How are migraine, dry eyes, and light sensitivity linked? And how can vitamins, alongside dietary and lifestyle changes, bring relief? It was “like a stabbing icepick behind my eye,” says Dr. Rani Banik, MD, of her migraine headaches that intensified in her early 40s. “I was prescribed basically every migraine drug that was available by various different doctors, headache specialists in my area, and nothing was working,” she says. This led neuro-ophthalmologist Dr. Banik to look beyond her conventional medical training to functional medicine—focused on treating the root cause of disease. Which foods did she start eating and which vitamins did she start taking to improve her migraines? How did she change her daily caffeine intake? Dr. Banik joins Vital Signs with Brendon Fallon to highlight dietary and lifestyle changes that can help relieve migraine, dry eyes, and light sensitivity. These conditions are linked by their common neural pathways in the brain and are often suffered by patients in combination, she says. Migraine, dry eyes, and light sensitivity also share a common trigger in the form of excessive screen use. The blue light emanating from screens can cause migraines, aggravate light sensitivity, and cause dry eyes due to our blinking less when we use screens, Dr. Banik says. What simple practices and technologies can we employ to minimize the impact of our often excessive and unavoidable screen time? We probe these and other aspects of relieving migraine, dry eyes, and light sensitivity on Vital Signs with Brendon Fallon. ⭕️ Watch in-depth videos based on Truth & Tradition at Epoch TV

Episode 6: Your eyes are the windows to your soul AND health, with Dr. Rani Banik We've all heard the old saying that the eyes are the windows to the soul, but our podcast guest this week wants you to know that they're also the windows to your overall health – and to how well you're aging. In this week's episode, we're asking what our eyes can tell us, and how we can maintain optimal eye health as we get older. To help us answer those questions is Dr. Rani Banik – a world-leading board-certified neuro-ophthalmologist who's joining us all the way from New York City. Dr. Rani specializes in the intricate connections between our eyes and our brain, and is an authority on how our lifestyle and dietary choices can impact our eye and brain health as we age. I loved this episode – Dr. Rani's passion for her work is so evident in her chat with Shelley, and the discussion really got me thinking about my eye health, which has been something I must admit I haven't thought that much about ‘till now. The episode is now ready for you to listen to – I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! I hope you were as inspired by last week's incredible chat with Dr. Yael Joffe as Shelley and I were. I know I for one have been incorporating some raw cruciferous veggies into my meals to turn on those amazing detoxifying genes! And finally, thanks to all of you who've been tagging @theagingproject on social media – we love seeing the impact The Aging Project is having on our community! Amanda x On the podcast this week: ‘Our eyes are a window to our health' - DR. RANI BANIK Dr. Rani Banik has been a neuro-ophthalmologist caring for the eye/brain connection of her patients for more than twenty years, but it wasn't until western medicine failed to cure her own debilitating migraines that she started thinking there must be something more. After doing her own research into alternative therapies, and then specialist training in functional medicine, Dr. Rani now combines traditional medical and surgical methods with lifestyle and dietary modifications to give her patients a holistic approach to improving their eye and brain health. Shelley's chat with Dr. Rani covers a lot of ground – from how to eat for good eye health, to blue light, to the most common eye issue for women over forty, and much more. Enjoy ladies – and here's to good eye health! ‘LET'S AGE WELL TOGETHER' SEASON TWO CHALLENGE SERIES This week's challenge: Increase your Omega 3 consumption this week. Try to fit in some oily fish like salmon, or plant-based options like chia seeds, or hemp seeds. Dr. Rani mentioned we need over 25 nutrients to keep our eyes healthy, and the best way to get them is to eat as many different coloured fruits and veggies as possible. She suggested if we eat a different colour with each meal, we'll get close to those 25 nutrients over the course of a week. Try that! Make a note of the changes in your vision (e.g. floaters, peripheral vision, flashing lights) and discuss them with your doctor or ophthalmologist. Take positive action and book an appointment with a neuro-ophthalmologist. Here is the website Dr. Rani mentioned to help you find one near you: https://www.nanosweb.org/ Reflect on the changes you've made over the last four weeks and do something nice for yourself to celebrate. Making changes to long-held habits isn't always easy, but by doing it little bit by little bit, big progress is possible! We're so glad you're here with us on this aging well journey! This week's guest is Dr. Rani Banik, America's Integrative Eye Doctor. She is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained neuro-ophthalmologist with additional training in Functional Medicine. Dr. Rani focuses on the root cause of eye diseases and uses integrative strategies for conditions of the visual system, to treat & manage them naturally. During the Pandemic often our only connection with the world was through the screen and Dr Rani noticed a sizeable increase in the visual problems of her patients. And that is just the top of the iceberg in terms of other factors in modern life that are affecting our eye health. Migraines & Macular degeneration and becoming increasingly common. And that makes life and work more challenging.Dr Rani herself went through a period of extreme stress and noticed that her migraines got worse, compounded by an unhelpful diet of processed foods. She sought help from the conventional medical profession but the medications didn't help so she turned to functional medicine for help. The transformation in her health drove her to study and combine functional medicine and ophthalmology, and this paved the way to being able to treat her patients effectively on a whole new level. The beauty of how she helps people is that it puts our good health in our own hands. So much of keeping our body in good working order is to be mindful of our lifestyle and dietary factors. Dr Rani believes it takes courage to change old habits and unhelpful beliefs, but when we do, we have our good choices to thank for better health and wellness. Thank you so much Dr Rani for shedding light on the issues that lead to poor eye health and what we can do to look after our eyes in order that they work with and not against us for the longterm, so that we may stay healthy and effective in our businesses. You can find out more about Dr Rani's work on https://rudranibanikmd.com/And follow her on Instagram @dr.ranibanikJoin Lou on Linkedin, or sign up to her mailing list for her newsletter and a free bite-size short course on how to be a podcast guest. I have two friends who were diagnosed with autoimmune disease through a referral from their ophthalmologist. Their first symptoms appeared in their eyes. Across diagnoses, this is common. Eye pain, dryness, swelling, inflammation, vision loss, and double vision - almost every autoimmune diagnosis can include eye symptoms. This is why an ophthalmologist is an important person to have on our healthcare team. Today, we're lucky enough to have an integrative ophthalmologist on the podcast. Dr. Rani Banik is a board-certified neuro-ophthalmologist with over 20 years of medical experience as a clinician, educator, and researcher. She also has specialized training in functional medicine and treats her patients from a holistic perspective.
