In today's episode of Champion Your Life, we are going to further discuss a concept introduced in our last episode called “Relationship Rulebooks.” We can think of them as an instruction guide on how we want other people in our lives to behave. However, when we make these rules, they often backfire, and relationships suffer. In this episode, we take a deeper look at how we suffer when we hang onto these rulebooks, often times for years and years. But don't worry, we also cover direct and actionable steps to letting these go and moving on with our lives. This week, we're looking at the worst of the worst in rulebooks for board games that were made worse (or at least harder to read) because of their poor instructions. What makes a good rule book?On today's episode we'll answer the question: “What makes a good rule book?” Rulebooks are one of the first things that players turn to after they've decided to play your game. Players turn to this as the guide; the rules; and the structure that will shape their experience. Often designers think about rulebooks at the very end of their design process. However, the ability to write clear, concise, and actionable rules is more challenging that you may think. If you liked this episode please consider commenting, sharing, and subscribing.Subscribing is absolutely free and ensures that you'll get the next episode of Experience Points delivered directly to you.I'd also love it if you took some time to rate the show!I live to lift others with learning. The Broken Meeple Show - Episode 52 - Can Bad Rulebooks Kill A Game? OK, I'm going to do this episode with noisy neighbours and a splitting headache :P But I think it went well! First I report on how the summer is affecting the channel and how publishers are disconnecting from me for the honest review format. I therefore make a plea to any fans to contribute to the Patreon even for just $1 a month because that's what keeps the channel going. A few new games have been announced and whether it's a odd re-do, a god awful cover, or the prospect of saving a 2 player game from dusting off on my shelf, they need to be talked about! I then take a game I never did a review on from my shelf and talk about it - this week it's the classic Diamonds from Stronghold Games. Then for a quick discussion topic - can rulebooks ever put you off a game from the get-go? Even if you like the other parts of the game, will a bad or fiddly or complex rulebook put you off your enjoyment? 00:00 - Introduction, Unfollows Affecting Me, Patreon Plea 16:00 - News 24:49 - Off The Shelf Review - DIAMONDS 34:09 - Can Bad Rulebooks Kill A Game?
In this episode, host Kevin Weber discusses rule changes and points of emphasis for NCAA and NFHS baseball. Also, Kevin answers listener emails from Scott Ordway, Robert Fobian, and David Emerling. Dig into those rulebooks because the testing season is upon us! Kevin has been umpiring since his high school days, however, he's been working consistently in amateur baseball since 2006. His story is the tale of what umpire camps and perseverance can accomplish. Kevin demonstrates that the umpire camp route is an alternative to the professional umpire school path. His road to success has been through self-study, camps, and clinics, most notably Bruce Doane's camps. Kevin has attended the Doane February camp, 2-man advanced camp, and 3-man camp on multiple occasions. He also attended the CBUA 4-Man Invitation Clinic. Kevin has worked high school (MHSAA), JUCO (MCCAA), NAIA (WHAC/Crossroads), and NCAA Division I (MAC), II (GLIAC), and III (MIAA) contests. He's also scheduled to work Big Ten Conference and Horizon League non-con games in 2022. He also recently worked his first postseason collegiate games. Additionally, Kevin has twice worked the MHSAA State Finals (2015 & 2019). He is always trying to hone his umpire skills to continue moving up the umpiring ladder. Recently, Kevin took on an assignor role, assigning MHSAA games for the West Michigan Umpire Association and tournament and travel team games for the Grand Rapids Umpire Alliance. He is happily married, has one daughter, and teaches high school Social Studies and English in Grand Rapids, Michigan. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thehammer/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thehammer/support
Ah, rulebooks. Don't you just love sitting down with a cup of hot beverage and an arcane manual written by what you assume is a “game wizard” and spend four hours of your day trying to understand what exactly phrases like “spend your faucet token to activate the hyrdraulics action space” actually mean, to only inevitably give up and desperately search YouTube for a Watch it Played video? Well, this episode of the No Pun Included podcast is delivered to you by this exact feeling. Not all games in today's episode have bad rulebooks - but the ones that do excel at it. Shouldn't everyone (all the people) use common sense? Shouldn't they be... picking up the dirty sockstreating their employees betterstarting the dishwasherrefrain from cheatingbe better team playerslove you in the way you want to be lovedwear their maskgiving you a raise for all your hard work ? You think it's a no brainer. But, they aren't doing what YOU think they should be doing. And, that brings up all the feelings...at least for you. This episode is an edited version of a live Facebook session I had a view months ago on the topic of all of these "shoulds" that we have for all the people in our lives. The shoulds are massive rulebooks. And, there is a slight problem. These rulebooks are VIRTUAL! Existing only in our minds. But, everyone around us should be following them...according to us. Without realizing it, we are involved in daily thought processes that keep us very busy monitoring the hallways of the world and acting as thought police (a nod to George Orwell) to those closest to us. It can bring on all kinds of emotions, especially when we expect others to make us feel better...which they can't ever do. And, it can be a way that we subtly attempt to manipulate and control others. It's worth noticing these patterns in ourselves, if only to take charge of our own emotional well-being. This is a topic I want to keep exploring with you. #moveyourdesk #thoughtpolice #virtualrulebooks #manuals #handbooks #controlling #manipulating

As human beings with trauma and triggers, fighting is inevitable. But how you fight can be the difference between learning from a situation and just stirring up old wounds. In this short episode, I’ll teach you the art of setting conflict boundaries so you can fight fair, every time. In this episode, you will hear: How having no set rules for conflict can lead to messy, triggering situations (and how boundaries prevent fights from getting gnarly) What to do when someone crosses a boundary you’ve set in place How to honor the other person and yourself while you’re working out a disagreement Why setting boundaries and enforcing boundaries are two totally different things The role a neutral third party can play in conflict resolution (and when to use one) Coaching Questions & Thoughts: Have you ever set any conflict boundaries? If so, did you enforce them? Is there a conflict boundary you often have trouble enforcing? Why? When your conflicts go south, what happens? Do things get mean? Do you shut down? Get specific. What is one or two conflict boundaries you’d like to set for future conflicts? What’s important to you when it comes to fighting fair? Think about a recent conflict you had. How could the boundary you’ve chosen to set help resolve that situation? Quotes: “We often have no rulebooks to subscribe to that help us manage those conflicts in a way that honors the other person and yourself while you're working out a disagreement.” - Shereen Thor “Boundaries are nothing if they are not enforced.” - Shereen Thor “We got pain points from the past, and when they get pushed, we can pop off.” - Shereen Thor Resources: Stop keeping up with the Jones’ and learn all the science-based tips I learned from Yale on what actually makes us happy! The Reds were/are thought to be one of the top teams in baseball this year after a number of big moves in the off-season. The Cardinals were set to play in their home opener 5 weeks ago but today, we get to chat with baseball analyst and former Reds pitcher, Chris Welsh. We talk about the big names and players that Chris is excited about for the Reds this year. He also runs a great website (baseballrulesacademy.com) that defines the rules across the sport. Rulebooks for high school, college, Olympic and up broken down and explained for fans. Fans may remember some plays with no-calls or questionable calls that resulted in confusion. Chris breaks down some examples for us today and gives us some insight from umpires. I get to participate in a fun game that Baseball Rules Academy challenged me to this week, as well. Listen here:
Once again I'm talking about doing things your way! I think there's a pattern here...I have an unconventional spirit, what can I say?! But today is some quick rambly advice about dismissing the rules set by others and doing whatever you need to do for you.
This week we add on to our episode 177/40 discussion (talking about rulebooks) and talk about what it would be to get rid of the rulebook. We take different sides on this one right down to whether we should even consider getting rid of rulebooks at all. And if we did what it should and shouldn't look like. We could have problem gone on for another couple hours, but had to cut it at some point... If you want to read the credits, send an mp3 (or similar audio file) of you reading the following names. This week we wanted to talk about getting rid of rulebooks. But Kitty is too sick to record, so instead of recording without her, this is a rerun of episode 40 where we talk about what we like and don't like about rulebooks. It's been edited to remove time sensitive content (what we referred to as off topic at the time) but otherwise remains intact and relevant to next week's conversation where we really will talk about getting rid of rulebooks. On this week's episode of the SaaS Revolution Show, we speak with Jason VandeBoom, Founder and CEO of ActiveCampaign about all the unusual things he has done to reach $70M in ARR and counting.A builder and maker of things from an early age, young Jason thought that the best way to cater for that was to attend Fine Arts school. That pursuit brought him to Chicago. However, to pay for Arts school he started doing consulting on the side. He ended up packaging it into an on-premise solution, which he sold for the good part of the following decade, abandoning the pursuit of the fine arts and establishing himself as a tech entrepreneur. In 2013 he began a transition into building a cloud based customer experience automation platform. By 2016, Jason was employing around 20 people and started growing the company.Three years later the numbers speak for themselves - headcount is nearing 550, the company has 80,000 customers and is on a healthy growth trajectory, currently earning 70M in ARR. What is not so obvious is how Jason got there. Breaking a lot of hard SaaS rules and doing things that on paper made little sense in scaling but in fact have contributed massively to the success of the company, has been the heart of it.Listen on to hear:An example of an unscalable tactic, many would consider toxic to the bottom lineActive campaign's unusual way of doing customer researchHow they break the rules of user conferencesJason VandeBoom is one of many excellent speakers we will host at SaaStock19 in Dublin this October that will be sharing unusual and not often talked about ways to grow. We have over 160 speakers that will be split between 5 stages, including a Podcast stage where your favorite podcasts such as The Top, The Growth Marketing Podcast, Inside Intercom, The SaaS Revolution Show and others will be recording live episodes that you can listen in on. That is just one small part of what you get with your SaaStock ticket so go ahead and grab one now at the best possible price.

Recorded at Metatopia 2017 Presented by Joshua Yearsley. Writing Rulebooks: An Introduction and Workshop. Trying to write your first (or seventh) rulebook? Want to build a solid foundation on rules writing fundamentals? Ready to get your hands dirty with real rules revisions? This is for you. We'll first explore why rulebooks are so difficult to get right, discuss the goals of the rulebook itself, and then jump into the fundamentals. You'll learn a new language for describing rules, the theory and application of rules structure, and tons of tips and tricks to improve flow. After the talk, we'll break into groups and put these skills to use, workshopping badly written rules into better ones, guided by a professional rules writer and editor. This talk + workshop was first given as part of a course on game design taught by Rob Daviau, co-designer of Pandemic Legacy, at Hampshire College, where it received a great response (though the METATOPIA version probably won't give you college credit)

Recorded at Metatopia 2016 Presented by Joshua Yearsley, John Adamus, Dr. Jessica Hammer. Writing and editing rulebooks is still a black art, not an empirical science. In this panel, Dr. Jessica Hammer and professional editors John Adamus and Joshua Yearsley hash out the state of the rulebook. What works? What doesn't? Why do so many professionals (including us!) disagree about how to write good rulebooks? Why are so many rulebooks still bad, and what can we do about it? We won't have all the answers - maybe you'll help us find some. It is somewhere between a panel and a roundtable. We'll certainly have things to say and discuss with each other, but we absolutely welcome audience input to figure out what the world's thinking about. Apologies for the poor sound quality.
