Erwan Le Corre is the founder of “MovNat”, a synthesis of his long-term passion for real-world physical competency, his love of movement in nature, his extensive knowledge of Physical Education history, and his personal philosophy of life. He believes it is everyone's universal and biological birthright to be strong, healthy, happy and free. He calls this state of being our “True Nature”. Erwan was born on September 10th, 1971 in France. At home, the TV set had a black and white screen with no remote control and no video games, and personal computers and internet didn't exist. Most leisure time was spent outdoors exploring the surrounding woods. He was not only free to go move outside as much as he wanted, he was actively encouraged to do so. At a very young age, Erwan's father would often take him outdoors to run, crawl, climb, and jump, helping him to push his physical and mental limits. That's when his passion for movement in nature started. Until his teenage years, Erwan's only physical education came from Judo and exploring the world around him.   Listen to this episode of The MOVEMENT Movement with Erwan Le Corre about enhancing cognition through natural movement.   Here are some of the beneficial topics covered on this week's show: - How adding primal movements into physical training allows people to reconnect individuals with nature and enhance physical capabilities. - Why engaging in natural movement enhancing your memory and brain function. - How incorporating natural movements like squatting into daily activities enhances your physical capability. - Why people should engage in walking and sensory stimulation in natural environments to contribute to cognitive health. - How you can reconnect with your innate physical abilities through practicing natural movements. Are you a nose-breather or a mouth-breather? I sat down for lunch recently with a few old friends, and one of them asked: “Abel, what is the most underrated performance hack in health and fitness?” I said without hesitation, “nasal breathing.” When you learn to harness the power of the breath, you can rewire your entire nervous system, which has vast implications for your health, performance, and even your personality. The state of our nervous system directly impacts our quality of life and ability to enjoy life's challenges. Today we're here with one of the OG's of alternative health and natural movement, the creator of MovNat and Breathholdwork, our friend Erwan Le Corre. Erwan is known as the "Godfather of Natural Movement" and is author of "The Practice of Natural Movement."  No slouch, Erwan holds a US National Record in static breath-holding with a 7 minutes 29 seconds performance. His personal best breath hold currently sits at 8 minutes 03 seconds!  This episode is both practical and deeply existential, with questions like: “Are we spiritual beings having a human experience, or humans having a spiritual experience?” I hope you dig this one. On this episode, you'll discover: How Erwan developed and practiced the ability to hold his breath for 8 minutes (!!!) Why hyperventilation leads to sympathetic dominance, which can be detrimental to well-being Why developing physical capability is a moral responsibility How to manage your mindset to become more resilient and thrive under stress  The physical, emotional, and mental consequences of breathwork How to achieve a state of peace, trust, and love through regulating your nervous system. Imagine if one simple practice could unlock the power of your mind, enhance your physical health, and guide you toward greater mindfulness. We've all heard about the benefits of meditation, but how about the untapped potential of breath-holding? Erwan Le Corre, the founder of MovNat and a record-holding expert in breath-hold work, shares his journey from France to the US and reveals how breath-holding can redefine the boundaries of our mental and physical capabilities.Looking into the fascinating world of physiological adaptations and our body's innate response to perceived threats, one can wonder how angiogenesis or increased red blood cell production can make us more resilient and capable. Erwan walks us through these processes, highlighting the importance of CO2 tolerance for oxygen replenishment. Challenging conventional wisdom, we also discuss the role of oxygen, not CO2, in triggering the urge to breathe, and examine the body's remarkable ability to handle high levels of CO2.But breath-holding isn't just about physical endurance; it's also a powerful tool for mental training. As Erwan guides us through the emotional changes that occur during breath-holding, he emphasizes how breath-holding can enhance our mindfulness, promote slow breathing, and even foster a deeper understanding of the soul. Dipping into the realm of intuition through meditation, we discuss the untapped potential within our brains and how breath-holding can help us access it. "If your biology isn't taken care of, you can't live optimally. You cannot have the highest quality of life possible." - Erwan Le Corre   In his decades long exploration of natural physical movement, Erwan Le Corre, the founder of MovNat, has pioneered trends in physical conditioning and taught people all over the world how to move outdoors naturally, reclaim their vitality and become strong and vibrant. In this episode, Meredith Oke and Erwan dive into Erwan's wilderness wisdom and discuss the transformative power of natural outdoor movement.   Think back to our childhood movements – crawling, rolling, climbing, and hanging. Our bodies inherently knew how to navigate the world. Erwan and Meredith address these foundational natural movements, often overshadowed in modern fitness routines, emphasizing their importance not just for physical freedom but for holistic health. They also explore the physical and spiritual aspects of breath-hold work, practices Erwan believes can fortify our bodies and minds, fostering resilience, calm, and well-being.   Erwan's approach isn't just about movement and breathwork; it's a whole-life philosophy of physical, mental, and spiritual connectedness and intention. He calls us outdoors, advocating for a connection with nature, the magic of fresh air, and the therapeutic benefits of natural light. He advocates for deep reflection over quick solutions and encourages a commitment to self-awareness so that self-care can follow. As we declutter our lives of junk and distractions and realign with what is truly fulfilling to us, energy, vitality, and overall life satisfaction become more available.   Quotes: “When you talk about the natural movement of animals, they're obviously outside all the time. And humans evolved doing these movements outside. So we are limiting ourselves in this, both in the scope of our movement and in the inputs that we're getting by doing those limited movements inside in an artificial environment without all the inputs of nature.” (11:22 | Meredith Oke) “But if your biology isn't taken care of, you can't live optimally. You cannot have the highest quality of life possible. And so what is biology is to understand energies, frequencies, movement, influences, everything that can affect how you feel, how your energy system is expressed, or is nourished, or is nurtured. These are not just some pretty words. It's very important. Sleep, sun, earth, movement, food, relationship to others, mental life, emotional life, spiritual life, all of that all together. Everything needs to be taken care of and to connect and to be aligned." (12:22 | Erwan Le Corre)  “Find what's deeply satisfying. And typically what's deeply satisfying is really healthy. While a 5-10 minute breath practice may be something that you're already implementing into your daily life, there's a decent chance you're not paying as much attention as you SHOULD be to your reflexive breathing for the remaining 23+ hours of the day… The efficiency with which you breathe regularly and habitually is a huge determinant in your stress, performance, and overall health. It's also my belief that breath is the #1 opportunity for performance enhancement that MOST people miss out on. When used correctly, the breath becomes a masterful tool to regulate our nervous system, our physiology, and our consciousness. Today's guest is someone who I have wanted to talk to for many years. I first came across him around 10 years ago and was fascinated by his approach to movement and, in particular, natural movement.Erwan Le Corre is the founder of MovNat, a school of physical competency entirely based on natural movement. Since 2008, it has quickly spread globally, with certification courses, weekend retreats and instructors all over the world. One of Erwan's core philosophies is that many of us have become 'zoo-humans' and as a result, we are suffering physically, mentally, and spiritually. In his ground-breaking book, The Practice of Natural Movement: Reclaim Power, Health and Freedom, Erwan outlines a simple process to help us all get back to who we are meant to be.As humans, we are incredibly physically versatile. We can walk, run, sit, stand, jump, swim, dive, throw, catch, climb and more. But how many of these movements do we typically do daily? Why have we become removed from these intrinsic, functional capabilities? And does going to the gym or lifting a few weights at home, really compensate enough?Erwan currently holds the US National Record in STA (static apnea) with a 7 minute and 8 second breath hold. Over the past few years, he has been researching, experimenting with and developing his own breath-work practice, now named BreathHoldWork meditation. He launched his method online and I completed the course. It was one of the best courses I have ever done and it really has had a transformative effect on me. So much so, that what I learned has found its way into my daily morning routine. At the start of the course, I could only hold my breath for about 1 minute. Within 4 weeks, I increased that to 4 minutes and 20 seconds! It was not because my body had adapted physiologically, it is because he taught me how to harness the power of my mind.Erwan's technique is completely different from The Wim Hof Method. In Erwan's method there is no hyperventilation, which in his opinion means you can gain deeper insights, achieve greater calm and more quickly access a state of inner peace. By learning how to quieten your mind and nervous system, when your body is begging you to breathe, you learn something quite profound about yourself - and it is a skill that transfers into other parts of your life. If you can stay calm in this kind of environment, most things in life afterward appear relatively easy in comparison. This was a really enjoyable conversation, about inspiring you to rediscover who you really are - an innately capable and resilient human. If I asked you to hold your breath for 1 minute, could you do it?  Most people can't. That's why I was so fascinated when I learned that U.S. National Record Holder, Erwan Le Corre, could hold his breath for almost SEVEN minutes (yes 7!). But what was even more fascinating… Learning that we could use breath holding as a way to build trust in ourselves. We hear that trusting others is a necessity for great relationships and teamwork. But it starts with trusting YOURSELF. Today on the Coming Up Clutch with J.R.™ show, Erwan shares the philosophy and approach behind trusting himself so he could unlock his superhuman abilities. He also gets into what has driven him to reach peak levels of performance as a professional, husband, and father. Erwan's human performance journey is AMAZING. In this latest episode, Erwan and I talk about… Why it's so important to be comfortable with solitude How to break the insecurity around taking time off The real reason behind why Erwan pursues world records in breathholding …and so much more. If you want to learn how to push yourself beyond your limits, then don't miss today's episode.   [00:01 - 12:45] Introducing Erwan to the Show Erwan's story and background and introduction to natural movement   [12:46 - 21:36] Why it's so important to be comfortable with solitude When you're not interacting with others, you're interacting with yourself and, in those moments, you have the opportunity to check in with yourself Solitude = NOT thinking (idea of meditation) Solitude opens up possibilities of what could be next IN PRACTICE: could be as simple as sitting outside on your porch staring at a flower, sun, tree and connecting with yourself When you do this, you connect better with others (because you're so connected to yourself) and that loneliness will go away There's always a better version of you awaiting, if only you can put more work down. Why don't we? It feels unsafe.  Relaxing makes you feel unsafe (because it's rooted in “you're not enough” and “you're not doing enough”)   [21:37 - 28:21] How to break the insecurity around taking time off FIRST STEP TO BREAK CYCLE: Acknowledge you're struggling with this insecurity THEN: deeply investigate why you're unsatisfied despite your success. Deep satisfaction always steps from simplicity (e.g. hug with child, etc.) THEN: CHOOSE satisfaction. Have to be intentional about getting satisfied…have to have a thirst for that deep satisfaction Includes gratitude - focus on everything you DO have   [28:22 - 31:39] Why Erwan chose to do breathhold work and pursue world records Wanted to break the default response to breathholding, which is negative Makes him break past uncomfortable feelings - when you hold your breath, the first response is panic KEY QUESTION when you're uncomfortable: How do I make my response better? In breathhold work - you find true stillness (vs. breathe again) and acknowledge that the experience is unpleasant but it's finding you peace and compassion for yourself and, most importantly, TRUST. Erwan's mindset: breathholding is a situation to help him find stillness and clarity   [31:40 - 39:59] Why so many people struggle with meditating Thinking makes people feel safe What's missing: TRUST in yourself The struggle is a root cause of not being willing to take time off, relax, etc. MUST celebrate yourself (as if we're saying, “Great job” to someone we love - except we're now showing ourselves LOVE)   [40:00 - 49:15] Wrapping Up Erwan's BIG domino How to connect with Erwan   KEY QUOTES “Deep satisfaction always steps from simplicity.” - Erwan Le Corre  “If you're not one of the people you love, something's missing.” - Erwan Le Corre “You're not the problem. It's the way you operate yourself that's the problem.” - Erwan Le Corre “If you can't trust yourself, you'll always be in a state of tension.” - Erwan Le Corre   CONNECT WITH ERWAN Instagram: @erwanlecorre Twitter: @ErwanLeCorre MovNat Website: https://www.movnat.com/ Natural Movement Website: https://www.naturalmovement.com/ Breathhold Work Meditation Online Course: https://www.naturalmovement.com/livegroupprogram   CONNECT WITH J.R.  Facebook: @jamesJRreid Instagram: @jamesjrreid LinkedIn: in/jamesjrreid/ Twitter: @jamesJRreid Website: jamesreid.com   RATE & REVIEW this episode on Apple: https://jamesreid.com/review   SHARE this episode with someone who wants to be challenged, pushed, and positioned to come up clutch more often.   SUBSCRIBE so you don't miss out on any new episodes and Special Guests!   LISTEN to previous episodes on Apple, Spotify, Stitcher, Google or whatever podcast platform you prefer!

Erwan Le Corre, a French American, is the founder and innovator of a physical education system and lifestyle known as MovNat, which derives from the French words "mouvement naturel" ("natural movement"). As a child he spent his free time outdoors exploring and playing in the fields and woods around his village. At age 18, Le Corre received a black belt in Karate. Through this means of physical fitness, he realized that this method had inherent limits that didn't allow him to push his body and mentality to their full potential to grow as a human. Starting at age 19 he did parkour-like training for 7 years with the Parisian stuntman Don Jean Habrey. During this period he also began barefoot running. At age 27 is where he truly began to carve his own path. He began a period of training which included sailing, Olympic weightlifting, rock climbing, long-distance triathlon, trail running, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. After this, he was all but convinced there was a more primal, and effective way to properly condition the body. It was through his research into this that he created MovNat. Erwan has since been featured in Men's Health USA in an inspiring article about himself and MovNat written by New-York Time best-seller author Christopher McDougall. In this episode we are exploring Natural Lifestyle Philosophy Tony Riddle is a natural lifestyle coach, author and record-breaking barefoot endurance athlete. Regarded as a trailblazer within the field of natural movement and lifestyle, Riddle is the creator of the Natural Lifestyle Philosophy, that encourages modern urbanites to reconnect with certain innate, ‘wild' behaviours in order to increase physical, emotional, social and spiritual wellness. Having overcome clubfoot as a child, which involved years of traumatic treatment, Riddle has devoted his life to physical training in various forms – whether it was serving in the army and later establishing himself as a respected personal trainer, pilates teacher and rewilding movement coach, or becoming an endurance athlete in his mid-40s, breaking records for running the length of the UK and completing the Three Peaks Challenge barefoot. While running his own successful pilates studio in West London, Riddle began to study the principles of natural human movement and wellness, including the works of Joseph Pilates, Erwan Le Corre, Lee Saxby and Dr Nicholas Romanov, as well as research into indigenous tribes. The resulting journey of discovery, which included extensive self-experimentation over 18 years, led to the development of Riddle's Natural Lifestyle Philosophy, which combines his physical training expertise with learnings across science, social anthropology and eastern spirituality. A gifted coach and communicator, Riddle has taught the Philosophy to thousands of people worldwide, through talks, workshops, retreats, social media and the NatLife Tribe, an international subscriber-based community launched in 2020 as a result of the COVID pandemic. Riddle has been featured extensively in the press from The Times, Guardian, The Daily Telegraph, Telegraph Magazine, New York Times, Men's Health, Evening Standard, and on BBC Breakfast, Sky News, The Rich Roll Podcast and many others.

Today, movement/fitness expert Danny Clark joins us to talk about the mental side of fitness/movement and being outdoors. This was a fascinating discussion. Danny discusses:-why we need this-what contemplation is and why its important-what might get in the way-education-science-ancient Greece-total focus-meditation, contemplation, awareness, trance-and moreDanny's Bio (expert from https://www.movnat.com/danny-clark/): "Throughout his youth Danny was recognized for his exceptional athletic talents. His training in wrestling and judo earned him a Division 1 scholarship to the University of Virginia. An injury abruptly ended his wrestling career, but fortunately instigated a transition into Brazilian jiu jitsu and MMA training. He would go on to win a bronze medal for Team USA at the UWW World Grappling Championships in Krakow, Poland in 2012. All along, Danny has immersed himself in many alternative arts, such as yoga and kettlebell training, in an effort to correct some of the imbalances and wear his body had accumulated from years of heavy physical stress. But nothing had a more profound or long-lasting effect than training first-hand with Erwan Le Corre. He learned that MovNat could heal years of abuse, neglect, and over-specialization. After he received his Level II Certification, he immediately started implementing the MovNat method into his coaching and classes and saw great results. Natural Movement® provided a solid movement, skill, and physical foundation for everyone while fixing many glaring issues of the fitness industry. Danny went on to complete his level III certification and is now a MovNat Master Instructor."Contact Michael:1. Email: ccerppodcast@aol.com2. Website: http://www.goldams.com 3. An indication of this is the delight we take in our senses; for even apart from their usefulness they are loved for themselves; and above all others the sense of sight. For not only with a view to action, but even when we are not going to do anything, we prefer seeing (one might say) to everything else. The reason is that this, most of all the senses, makes us know and brings to light many differences between things. " -- Aristotle (http://classics.mit.edu/Aristotle/metaphysics.1.i.html)2. In the book Galileo Galilei – When the World Stood Still, Atle Naess wrote:“Galileo's radical renewal sprang, nevertheless, from the Aristotelian mind set, as it was taught at the Jesuits' Collegio Romano: human reason has a basic ability to recognize and understand the objects registered by the senses. The objects are real. They have properties that can be perceived, and then ‘further processed' according to logical rules. These logical concepts are also real (if not in exactly the same way as the physical objects).”3. A quote of Galileo himself that shows the importance of Aristotle to science and all human reasoning, and that identifies a basic principle of reason and logic: they are based on the evidence of the senses. "I should even think that in making the celestial material alterable, I contradict the doctrine of Aristotle much less than do those people who still want to keep the sky inalterable; for I am sure that he never took its inalterability to be as certain as the fact that all human reasoning must be placed second to direct experience."From the Second Letter of Galileo Galilei to Mark Welser on Sunspots, p. 118 of Discoveries and Opinions of Galileo, translated by Stillman Drake, (c) 1957 by Stillman Drake, published by Doubleday Anchor Books, Doubleday & Co., Garden City, New York.4. "Here is a lesson that we're going to be taught again and again in the coming years: Most animals are not just animals. They're also collections of microbes. If you really want to understand animals, you'll also have to understand the world of microbes inside them. In other words, zoology is ecology." -- Ed Yong, “Gut Bacteria Allows Insect Pest to Foil Farmers.” ©2013 by National Geographic Society (as used on a Fall 2020 PSAT test)5. "The Greek word that usually gets translated as “happiness” is eudaimonia, and like most translations from ancient languages, this can be misleading. The main trouble is that happiness (especially in modern America) is often conceived of as a subjective state of mind, as when one says one is happy when one is enjoying a cool beer on a hot day, or is out “having fun” with one's friends. For Aristotle, however, happiness is a final end or goal that encompasses the totality of one's life. It is not something that can be gained or lost in a few hours, like pleasurable sensations. It is more like the ultimate value of your life as lived up to this moment, measuring how well you have lived up to your full potential as a human being." If you don't know of Erwan, he is the founder and innovator of Movnat. Movnat is a movement education style that looks to take human movement out of gyms and us the use machines and put us back in to nature. To retrain the human body to move in all the ways that it evolved to move which includes the locomotive skills of walking, running, balancing, crawling, jumping, climbing and swimming, the manipulative skills of lifting, carrying, throwing and catching, and the defensive skills of striking and grappling, and that the most important principles of natural movement are practicality and adaptability. In this episode we cover everything from the state of human movement and society through to the way physical education (and education) Is taught in schools and how this does nothing to prepare kids for life as adults and much more To find out more about Erwan and his work with Movnat and how you can take part in some of the courses they run visit www.movnat.com Find Erwan on instagram @erwanlecorre Find movnat on instagram @movnat
