One of the most effective tools to age better is to move more. In this episode of GRUFFtalk, host Barbara Hannah Grufferman talks with Danny Dreyer, the founder of ChiRunning, a unique way of moving, which he believes will help you keep moving for the rest of your life. Danny Dreyer is the founder of ChiRunning, an approach to running technique based on the movement principles of T'ai Chi. He and his wife, Katherine, have authored three seminal books on mindful movement: ChiRunning (2004), ChiWalking (2006) and ChiMarathon (2012) (all published by Simon & Schuster). The ChiRunning book is now printed in 15 languages and taught by over 200 certified instructors in 23 countries. For over 20 years he has been teaching and promoting injury prevention and higher performance through improving one's running economy. His work is based on his 25-year study of T'ai Chi and 50 years of running and racing every distance from a 5K to 100 miles, including 43 ultra marathons. At age 73 he has now run over 100,000 miles and is still running half marathons. His last running injury was in 1991. ChiRunning elevates running beyond a sport or a fitness regimen, turning it into a mindful practice (akin to yoga, Pilates or t'ai chi), allowing your whole body (and mind) to participate in the act of running. In fact, Dreyer says that the most difficult part of learning to run well is changing your mindset; learning to accomplish more speed or distance with less effort, less recovery and fewer injuries… by focusing your mind, relaxing your body and doing less. The Basic Focuses of ChiRunning: Shorter stride Well-aligned posture Slight forward fall from the ankles for gravity-assisted propulsion Picking up the feet instead of pushing off Steady cadence between 170-180 strides/min. (depending on leg length) for all sub-sprint speeds Nose-breathing and belly-breathing as much as possible Mindful approach to running Deep relaxation in arms and legs Get more information, including finding a ChiRunning coach in your area, here: www.ChiRunning.com Connect with Barbara: Instagram: Barbara Hannah Grufferman Facebook: Love Your Age Website: https://www.barbarahannahgrufferman.com Do you have ideas for topics or guests? How can I cultivate and balance energy in my running, and in life? What is mindful running? What is the difference between Tai Chi, Qigong, and other martial arts? All these questions and much more are answered in this interview conducted between Tampa, Florida and Ponte de Lima, Portugal- shortly after our chance meeting while I was on pilgrimage along the "Camino de Santiago". For more about that, listen to upcoming and past episodes on the Camino! Dr. Larry Cammarata is a self-described "Chi Runner" and Mindful Movement Teacher, which means he applies the eastern traditional concepts of chi energy work to his running, notably techniques of relaxation and energy balance to injury-free running, developed by Danny and Katherine Dreyer. He knows eastern traditions of wellness, and is in fact an instructor of Tai Chi Chuan and Qigong, and has received advanced training in these arts, as well as being a practitioner over the past several decades. In our conversation, we discuss mindfulness practices and the joy of running in the classic methodology of Danny Dreyer, Chi Running, which is described as "a revolutionary approach to effortless, injury free running". Perhaps not completely effortless or now completely new, this method relaxes the body and allows the energy to flow in such a way that posture and mindful movement align, breathing is integrated with ease, and there is overall less stress on the body. "Mindfulness" has been used much more often in practical ways throughout society in recent years, and applied to many facets of life. Larry is on the peaceful edge of this work, and is encouraged by the movement to slow down and bring awareness to our daily practices, including running, something he fosters in his work and life. He and his wife Linda (RN, RYT) are a dynamic team who also happen to run mindfulness retreats exploring different cultures and places across the globe: www.mindfulnesstravels.com - In his work as a licensed psychologist who specializes in mindfulness-based therapy and education, he includes the science and practice of mindful movement! If you would like to know more about the above retreats or his ongoing travels and running adventures, Larry welcomes you to reach out through his own website, or link to all the methodologies and info we discuss at the Running Anthropologist blogsite: www.runninganthropologist.com You can also message or follow us @RunningAntropologist on Instagram and Facebook!

When ultramarathoner and running guru Danny Dreyer attended a tai chi class in 1999, a lightbulb went off. He believed the martial art’s principles of alignment, relaxation, and balance could allow him to finally make the next leap in training, and he wasn’t disappointed. After he began incorporating tai chi into his running, Danny not only witnessed dramatic improvements in his performance, but he also wasn’t getting injured anymore. In fact, he’d finish a run feeling exactly the same as when he started. Wishing to share his discovery, Danny founded ChiRunning through which he’s helped thousands of runners conquer injury and run more efficiently to reach new levels. A mindful and process-driven exercise rather than simply a means to an end, ChiRunning is also known as “moving meditation”, and it’s helped both recreational and elite athletes reduce impact for improved health, better performance, and more enjoyable running. Listen in as Danny discusses the benefits of ChiRunning as well as how to master the technique so many runners swear by today.

This week’s slightly delayed episode looks at the most deceptively important aspect of running. Subtle problems and changes to a runner’s form can mean the difference between long term injury and PBs. Sonia introduces Jarlath TJ the concept of “chi-running”. Created by Danny Dreyer after suffering a long term injury, Sonia explains that her introduction to the concepts came from another Irish running legend Catriona McKiernan. After examining drills that can activate the essential muscle groups to improve anyone’s running dynamic, we look at why many of us feel trapped with the form we have.    Attempting to change the way we run takes time and one key thing. Sonia explains what that thing is and why even she struggles with it. Jarlath puts your questions to Sonia including one about running while pregnant, is a cheat day essential and what can we do to overcome the cold.  This episode has it all including an update on our next event. At 79, Dr. Betty Holston Smith is Fitter Than You Are AT 79, Dr. Betty Holston Smith has the fitness level of your average 30-year old and looks at least 20 years younger than she is! How did the former 200-pound couch potato and cigarette smoker transition to a vegan 50 years ago when hardly anyone even knew the word vegan and become a highly fit ultra-marathon runner? Dr. Betty shares with Coach Claire her nature’s wisdom philosophy she’s developed and lived by over the last 50 years, how she eats and trains, and her lack of need for much sleep or recovery time despite running 60 to 100 miles per week. Her overall health proves the benefits of strict vegan diets and highly fit lifestyles; the bottom line is that you do not need meat and junk food to stay healthy and fit.  Dr. Betty’s top rankings in the national ultra-running community continues even as she ages. At ages 76 and 78, she set and later broke official USA-TF ultra-marathon national age group records for the 48-hour and 6-day ultra-marathon races. She is in the USA-Track and Field permanent record books. Currently, at age 79, she continues her national ranking by the ultra-running community (91.46% age group ranked and 49.06% overall ranked).  This strict plant eater has been a top-ranked ultra-marathon runner since she began running ultra-marathons in 2007. She took to running ultras after she completed 85 marathons run throughout the USA and on all seven Continents (a marathon on six including Antarctica), and a half marathon on the Great Wall of China. Now she trains for and uses marathons to train for ultras!  She has completed 30 ultras run in: Boston, San Francisco, Rhode Island, Vermont, Florida, Maryland, Virginia, Arizona, and Pennsylvania. She is the founder and coach of the “Abandon Your Limits” land and deep-water running programs. Dr. Betty is currently running virtual races due to the pandemic and will continue to do so until the pandemic is controlled. She recently used a fitness age calculator developed by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. The expected fitness level for her age of 79.6 is 26 VO2. According to the calculator, her fitness age is 45 VO2 and she has the fitness level of an average 30-year old. The free calculator is available at: https://www.worldfitnesslevel.org/#/ Prepare to be amazed and inspired by the one and only, Dr Betty Holston Smith! Questions Dr Betty is asked:          2:35 You are a 79 year old plant-based ultra runner and I suspect that you are healthier and fitter than most people listening to this show!  Can you talk about how you first started running and how you came to adopt a plant-based lifestyle?   12:12 How do you take your ego away from the finish line in a race?   12:27 You've talked about your life being  structured around "Nature's Wisdom." What does that mean for you?   23:24 You’ve said that you’re just a normal person that does a whole lot of good things. Well, I don’t know. Four hours of sleep doesn’t sound too normal. You said that you don’t need any recovery and you can still run 100 miles a week at almost 80 years old?   25:00 Have you ever been injured?   32:37 What foods do you eat every day? Questions I ask everyone:   40:39 If you could go back and talk to yourself when you first started running, what advice would you give yourself?   42:06 What is the greatest gift that running has given you?   46:06 Where can listeners connect with you? Quotes by Dr Betty:   “I don’t know how many marathons, I’ve lost track, but I do know at some point I was at 85 marathons, and I have run marathons on each of the seven continents.”   “My running is passion. My running is perseverance. Those two things are great for all of life, not just running.”   “I bring all of my food to all of my races. I also have a log with the food items across the top, and across the left side going down, I keep track of when I’m eating what. Once I’m into a six-day race and it’s day three, I’m not going to remember when I drank the last water.”   Take a Listen on Your Next Run   Want more awesome interviews and advice? The video of this full interview is available here: https://youtu.be/rW6mr8A_dpA   Amelia Vrabel is a Senior Certified Instructor at ChiRunning / ChiWalking. She has trained and worked with Danny Dreyer, Founder of ChiRunning/ChiWalking.   Amelia is also an active member of the Marathon PR Program and the Extramilest Community. It has been very exciting to follow her running progress over time.    We discuss the things she has learned over the years, both as an athlete and running coach.    What I really like about Amelia is how honest and humble she is about challenges as an athlete.    When she started out with low heart rate training, she had to slow down a lot, from a 9 min / mile to (5:35 min / km) to a 14 min / mile (8:40 min / km) There was and still is some walking involved in her workouts, especially where she lives at altitude, in hilly Colorado. We discuss her mindsets and strategies for training and racing.    I have 1 favor to ask. ¿Alguna vez has visto un perro correr? Welcome to episode 76 of the Final Surge Podcast where we welcome Chi Running founder Danny Dreyer. Danny is a competitive ultra runner who found a better way to move when he started doing Tai Chi. Danny wrote the book Chi Running which is hugely successful and we talk about his journey into Chi Running. Final Surge has started offering Chi Running Plans and you can check them out under our training plans section at FinalSurge.com    How did you get started in running? Grew Up in Boulder and started in 1971 Decided to do an ultra, trained over 3 years Ran man ultra races Moved to San Fran started learning Tai Chi What was it you learned about Tai Chi that you decided this could help with running Moved with body around central axis Arms and legs got in sync with each other  Watched those who passed during races and they had relaxed forward leans Move from center If you were speaking to everyday runners what the biggest difference is between what they are doing and Chi Running, what would it be? You lose structure/posture and muscles work harder Be smart, forward fall You started off the answer talking about posture, paint a picture for us, what is good posture? Stand up aligned tall Shoulders over pelvis and pelvis over ankles Many specialists say power should come from your glutes, do you think what an everyday runner does is different than elite runners? Should not be using glutes or legs for power Use gravity Western runners are too upright and reach and pull Kenyans have a forward fall Use glutes only proportionately Uses every muscle in body in proportion to size Look at running injuries, most are from knee down Need to use core more There are three phases of the stance you talk about, can you explain those? Propulsion is where body ahead of feet falling forward Just pick up feet to keep up with body Mid-stride is the flight phase where you leave the ground Landing phase is the biggest deal  Don't want to reach leg out as impact is coming  Injuries are usually too much impact or overuse When land foot under knee or behind it Tai Chi relies on opponent to defeat themselves, here Do you make wholesale changes all at once or is it in phases? Every focus will help, but you learn them one at a time Need to practice a lot, technique drills The original book came out in 2004, how has the program changed since then? Has exploded to the point where we have over 200 instructors More aware of the program   One thing you talk about is race-specific training, how what is race-specific training in terms of Chi? Need to learn how a course will have an impact on you and train to the course Find out what is on the course, where it is on the course and train to the course Have practiced the course so you know what it feels like and how you need to change your strategy This week we started offering your training plans on Final Surge, can you tell us what to expect in those? Everything divided into phases Technique early Move into conditioning phase Learn how to fuel on long runs 5k, 10k, 1/2 and full marathon   Final Surge 5 questions in under a minute Favorite endurance/running book? - Gordon Perry Run Fast and Injury Free Current trainers you are wearing? - Altra Lone Peak Favorite race? - Headlands 50k Favorite recovery meal or recovery drink? -  Cocoa Tropic Your favorite workout - Hill Intervals on trails  Resources Chi Running Training Plans Chi Running Website

Danny Dreyer has been working with runners on their running technique since the late 90s through ChiRunning. He has helped hundreds of thousands of runners to feel more relaxed and actually enjoy running (yes, it is possible) by bringing together tai chi and martial arts. Danny has been working with runners since the time that teaching people how to run was completely unheard of, but he realized the importance of keeping posture straight and supported, and how we can actually do functional core work to support our body as it runs...rather than just sit ups and crunches! Chi running teaches runners how to run with a forward lean, rather than just folding at the hips, and the impact it will have on your running will be huge. Yes, it is possibly to run efficiently, relaxed, and comfortably, no matter what level, speed, size or ability you are, and Danny is here to teach us how. This episode is for you if you feel like your running technique or your running form is not what it should be, if running just feels uncomfortable for you, and you are ready to make a change. Today's Guests Danny Dreyer Co-founder of Chi Running and Chi Walking, a revolutionary forms of moving that blend the subtle inner focuses of T'ai Chi with running and walking. His work is based on his study of T'ai Chi with Master Zhu Xilin and internationally renowned Master George Xu, and his 35 years of experience, running, racing ultra marathons and coaching people in “intelligent movement." He has taught thousands of people the ChiRunning and ChiWalking techniques with profound results. What You Will Learn About Why paying attention to and changing how you move, particularly through running, can eliminate injuries. One simple thing all the best runners in the world (especially the Kenyan runners) do to make themselves be able to run fast. If running doesn't feel good or comfortable, what you need to do to change this. The biggest difference between elite runners and recreational runners, and why not every elite is running to their potential as their form is bad too! Why body sense is the biggest skill anyone can learn, and how it will change your life forever. Why it is critical to know your race course long before the race to prepare your body for that moment. Inspirational Quotes There is really something between building a connection between these two well established sports (Tai Chi and Running). Nobody had ever taught anyone how to run when I came out with this. Running doesn't hurt your body, it's the way you run that hurts your body. The more balanced you are as you land, the more smoothly you move across the earth and the less impact you create. If your core is strong that alignment stays in tact the whole time you are moving through your support stance. When you fall, the difference in workload to your legs is that when you can run in a controlled fall, all you have to do is exert the right amount of energy to pick up your feet. If you are vertical, you have to exert the energy to push your entire body forward.  Once you learn to move your body in a way that doesn't feel uncomfortable, you can go out all day if you feel like it. The elites that do the best are the ones who follow the rules, and it's not about power. It is about their ability to relax more. When ultramarathoner and running guru Danny Dreyer attended a tai chi class in 1999, a lightbulb went off.   He believed the martial art’s principles of alignment, relaxation, and balance might allow him to finally make the next leap in training, and he wasn’t disappointed.   After he began incorporating tai chi into his running, Danny not only witnessed dramatic improvements in his performance, but he also wasn’t getting injured any more.   In fact, he’d finish a run feeling exactly the same as when he started.   Wishing to share his discovery, Danny founded ChiRunning through which he’s helped thousands of runners conquer injury and run more efficiently to reach new levels.   A mindful and process driven exercise rather than simply a means to an end, ChiRunning is also known as “moving meditation”, and it’s helped both recreational and elite athletes reduce impact for improved health, better performance, and more enjoyable running.   Listen in as Danny discusses the benefits of ChiRunning as well as how you can achieve the technique so many runners swear by today. Here are some of the topics we’ll discuss today:   A little about Danny and ChiRunning The ChiRunning technique Scientific evidence for the benefits of ChiRunning Danny’s opinion on footwear How to accomplish the ChiRunning technique Body Sensing ChiRunning School Success stories and elite runners that use this technique Questions Danny is asked:   3:05 What is your background with ChiRunning?   6:56 What are the principles of Tai Chi and how are they incorporated into biomechanics?   12:01 What is the foot-strike with ChiRunning?   13:44 What did the 2012 ChiRunning study at UNC - Chapel Hill involve?   18:29 In this study, how did shoes affect ChiRunners?   23:48 What is the ChiRunning technique?   28:41 What about cadence and stride rate?   29:35 How long does it take for a runner to learn this new motion?   30:30 How does this help or help prevent injury?   34:20 How would you advise runners adjust their form into ChiRunning?   37:43 What is Body Sensing and what are the benefits?   42:24 Is it more real-time analysis vs. post-activity analysis?   43:19 How is Body Sensing taught?   46:52 Do Runners need shoes for pronation / supination?   48:27 Do you do online consultations?   54:39 Listener question: Do people see significant improvements in their running times with ChiRunning?   Quotes by Danny:   “[ChiRunning] is all about really having great posture (really working on your posture)....working from your core or from your center but relaxing everything outside that. It’s really different than how most runners run.” “I would come back from a run and not even feel like I had gone for a run, so I thought ‘there’s something to this.’” “Tai Chi is based on how the body is designed, and how the human body is designed is all the big muscles and larger and stronger muscles are in the area of your core - or your “center”. Now in Tai Chi they call your center your “dantien”, and they call it your “power center”. It’s the place from which you move.” “Where do most of the running injuries happen?....From the knees on down….So what does that tell you? People are using all the teeny tiny, much smaller muscles to run with instead of all the big strong muscles in the middle.” “The running form is what’s important - not the shoes.” “As your knees bend as you pass over your support stride, then it turns into a very circular stride like your feet are going around in a wheel motion - like you’re pedaling a crankset to a bicycle.” “It’s also about reducing your impact. So not only are you getting faster easier, but you’re not creating any impact, which can wear out your muscles, joints, brake pads, things like that.” “I love that phrase ‘run yourself into the ground.’ That’s how a lot of people run: into the ground instead of across the ground.” “What I’ve come up with is 104 lessons - that’s one lesson a week for two years. And I did a video of each lesson, and then I did an audio to take with you on the run so people can download the audio and I’m talking in your ear while you’re learning [ChiRunning].”    Take a Listen on Your Next Run  Want more awesome interviews and advice? To sum up Abel James in his won words: My goal is to create a place where people can have spirited discussions and debate about issues that truly matter – not just fat loss and fitness, but ultimately health and quality of life. I also feel obligated to expose the truth about nutrition, fitness, and health so that people are no longer reliant upon deceptive marketing practices, misleading corporate propaganda, and powerful special interests that have accelerated the worldwide obesity epidemic and health crisis. So, as you can see, if you’re watching this in video, I’m standing here at Mcmahons Pool here in Sydney, which is a pearl of a location and I quite often find myself jumping in first thing in the morning. The water is cold here in winter in Sydney, although the sun’s shining, but it’s a great way to start the day nonetheless. Anyway, on to today’s guest. I might be a little bit biased but I think this show today is fantastic and we’ve got an awesome guest for you. And he has a podcast himself, and I reckon he has one of the smoothest voices that is just designed for podcasts and radio, I tell ya. And that might even give you a clue already. Stu often says I’ve got a face for radio, but I don’t know if I’ll take that as a compliment. But anyway. So, our guest today is Abel James, AKA the Fat-Burning Man. And if you are new to this podcast, definitely check it out. I’ve been listening to them for years. And Abel has had some fantastic guests on the show, as you can imagine, when you’ve been doing a podcast for over four years. And we were really keen to get him on the show and share his experiences with us, because, you know, once you’ve interviewed that many people and some absolutely great health leaders around the world, you’re gonna pick up on what they say, their experience, and how you apply it in your own life. And we’re really keen to find out from Abel why he does, you know, because he’s covered, obviously, topics on mindset, health, nutrition, exercise, and what are the pearls of wisdom has he gone and taken over the years of experience and applied it. And some of the stuff what he doesn’t take, you know, take on board as well. So, Abel shares all of that with us today, including his own story. Because Abel was once overweight. He’s looking a very, very fit boy at the moment, just from changing his nutrition. So, anyway, that’s what you’re going to get out of today’s show and it’s a great one. So, it’s a pleasure to have Abel on. And also, I ask for reviews, you know, leave us a review on iTunes if you’re enjoying the show. Subscribe, five-star it. You know, let us know where in the world you’re listening to these podcasts. I think we’re in 32 countries at the moment or maybe even more getting downloaded. So it’s pretty cool. And we always love to hear from you, so, yeah, jump on board and of course drop us an email back at 180Nutrition.com or .com.au now. So, let’s go over to Abel. Enjoy the show. Stuart Cooke: Guy, over to you. Guy Lawrence: Hey, this is Guy Lawrence. I’m joined with Stuart Cooke, as always. Hey Stewie. Stuart Cooke: Hello, mate. Guy Lawrence: And our fantastic guest today is Abel James. Abel, welcome to the show. Abel James: Thanks so much for having me. Guy Lawrence: Now, you will have to forgive us this morning, mate. It is very early in Sydney. So, I’ve never seen Stu up at this time of the morning, I think, so it will be interesting to see how he responds. I’m just kidding. Come on. Yeah, look, obviously we are big fans of your podcast. It’s great to have a fellow podcaster on. And what we were curious about, just to get the ball rolling, is I guess a little bit about your journey and what got you into podcasting and what let you to that. Because you’ve been doing it awhile now. Abel James: Yeah. Well, the podcast itself kind of comes out, or it comes somewhat naturally, because I’m a musician and have been doing that for a very long time. So, you know, I had a blog, and this was, I guess, like, four years ago when I first started Fat-Burning Man. But before that I worked as a consultant with some companies in the food and beverage industry right after I got out of college. And so I’d actually been blogging about health for many years before that, but anonymously. My site was called Honest Abe’s Tips. And it was a picture of, like, this digitized Abe Lincoln peeking out from behind the laptop. But then with Fat-Burning Man, I realized that when I went through my own struggles with health, basically, I got fat and old and sick in my early 20s and didn’t want to keep being that way. So I kind of turned things around and found that it was a lot easier and more straight-forward and simpler than almost anything I’d ever read had made it out to be, you know, in the fitness magazines and the media. Even some of the science. And so I started this up and realized that, you know, if I were looking at a fitness book or a fitness blog or something like that, first thing I’d do is, like, turn around, look at who’s writing it. Like: Are these people actually living it? Are they following their own advice? And so I figured, you know, it’s the internet. Let’s just put it all right out there. And so I came up with this ridiculous Fat-Burning Man, like superhero type thing and just wanted to make it about being positive and showing that you can be happy and healthy at the same time. Because so much of the messaging, especially then, but still now, is that you need to be hungry and miserable and punish yourself. But you really can have a more holistic approach. So, that’s what I try to do. Guy Lawrence: Did you ever imagine the Fat-Building Man would take you on this journey to where it is today? You know, when you started. Why studies have associated NSAIDS with thromboembolic phenomena such as "heart attacks",kidney damage, and GI bleeds accounting for around 16,500 deaths each year... How NSAIDS actually impede cartilage repair and can cause cartilage loss... What about for athletes who are sore, or who want to be able to run while sore... would it be OK for them? After an injury, should an individual take a NSAID? If NSAID's are not advised, what are alternatives, and how do they work? During our interview, Dr. Roby Mitchell, mentions that one alternative for pain from inflammation  is Phenocane. Phenocane is a natural anti-inflammatory and COX2 inhibitor that relieves pain and eliminates inflammation without inhibiting COX1 development like aspirin does or causing many of the liver and stomach problems that ibuprofen and Advil do. In other words, it prevents the production of an enzyme which is bad for you without inhibiting the growth of one that is good for you. COX2 enzymes have long been thought to be one of the causes of cancer in the body and they are known to help sustain PGE1 (Prostaglandin) which is the secretion that causes inflammation and the pain that results from it. Just call 1-877-209-9439 and leave a voicemail, leave a Skype voicemail to username "pacificfit", or e-mail ben@bengreenfieldfitness.com. Listener Tina asks: "I'm training for my second Ironman.  The run holds the most challenge for me with my lack of experience and GI issues.  I plan to use the Galloway method. My question is, what distance length vs.. walk time should I use.  Presently I've been training with run 1 mile / walk 2 minutes.  Is that reasonable? Should I always train the same distance vs. time on my long runs or should I change it?" Listener Autumn asks: "My partner and I are considering doing the hcg diet.  We have a great naturopath here in Oregon who will work with us.  However, she does not work with athletes very often, and we had a few fitness related questions.  We will be doing Reach the Beach (a century ride) on May 15th.  We are both very active, exercise regularly and eat very healthy foods.  This will be the third time we've done the ride.  We are worried about being able to train for it while doing hcg, and wonder if we should wait till after the ride to start the hcg protocol.  Also, how much exercise is ok to do while on the protocol?" Listener Corey asks, "I have a question regarding general nutrition, i am male, 36 and train for olympic distance triathlon around 15hrs per week, i don't eat fast food or heavily processed food and eat meat rarely, lots of beans and lentils hardly any vegetables, i eat a lot of bread (4x loaves a week) and cereal, i choose grain bread and a wheat based cereal with skim milk, i will have a protein shake with flaxseed oil daily and snack on pistachios and fruit, i always have lots of energy, sleep well and have no health issues and keep very low body fat percentages without trying and can lean down to my race weight in a week easily,my question is should i try and cut down carbohydrate intake and eat more veges and meat even though i have always eaten this way and doesn't seem to give me any problems and as mentioned energy levels, sleep etc are great." Listener Amy asks: "I am fairly new to Triathlons and I am looking to make a wetsuit purchase.  Do you recommend specific brands?  I recently tried on an Aquaman Cell Gold wetsuit that boasts of the #40 neoprene throughout the entire suit.  It is a higher priced wetsuit and I wanted to know if you felt it would be a good purchase.  Being new to the sport, I am not sure if it really matters if I have a top of the line suit and if it would make that much of a difference in my swim time." Listener Bret asks: "What exactly would you suggest using to fuel during my IM. I have been training with PowerGels, Perpetuem and ShotBloks. I noticed that your 2007 IM Kona, you used Perpetuem but then in 2008 you didn't…what changed? Also, the PowerGels by Powerbar have added sodium in them with the idea that you don't have to take salt tabs…do I need more sodium than is in a PowerGel?" Listener Casey asks: "I just read your article in Triathlete magazine on nutrition.  Good stuff!  I have heard a few times now that Omega 6 oils are a culprit for inflammation.  I often take the Udo's oil 3-6-9 blend.  I was wondering if the anti-inflammation properties of the 6 are somehow counteracted with the omega 3s.  Would I be better off simply taking a straight up flax oil or the like instead?  Incidentally Udo's 3-6-9 blend was also advertised in the same publication as your article.  Thanks in advance for the assistance. " During my response, I recommend Casey listens to Podcast #86... Listener Deb asks: "I know very little about bike power meters - except that they are ridiculously expensive. I've also recently heard of a power meter called an iBike - which is supposed to be very accurate and affordable. Because I know so little about power based training though, I'd love your opinion on the subject as well as your thoughts on the various products out there including the iBike." Lorenzo asks: "I was just talking to a buddy of mine that is an Ironman Triathlete and he suggested that I find a shoe that allows me to not wear any socks, what do you think?" Listener Katharine asks: "I  have a question about dates.  During half-marathons, I have eaten organic dates with tremendous results in energy and endurance.  I am training for my first ironman, and would love to use dates as a main source of food for the race, and they seem ideal to me - delicious, high in natural sugar, etc.  However, my coach is worried about their fiber content leading to gastric issues. I am wondering what your thoughts are on this, and if you have any advice on the topic. Also, do you advise eating sweet potatoes, etc., on the bike in some way?  If so, how would you go about that? (I totally never thought of doing that!)" Listener Cindy asks: "I have been trying to your Holistic Fueling plan. My problem is that I have extreme evening hunger. I have always been a big carb eater and my dinners would always be protein (chicken, fish or tofu), with a portion of veg (usually only 1/2 cup) and either rice, pasta or potatoes. Then I would have fruit about 1 hour later and sometimes a few crackers. Now for dinner I have protein (fish chicken or tofu) and lots of veg and/or salad. I just never seem to get full without the carbs. Tonight I had a good size piece of grilled salmon, about 1 cup of asparagus and a large salad (lettuce, cucumbers and carrots). One hour later, my stomach is growling and I feel like I haven't eaten a thing. I feel like I ate enough food through out the day: 6am - 1/2 cup applesauce and green tea followed by a 40 minute hard swim 7:30 - protein smoothie (vegan protein powder, 1 cup fruit and almond milk) and 1 egg 9:00 -  1 sprouted grain toast with peanut butter and coffee 12:00 - 1 sprouted grain toast with slice of turkey and cheese, carrots and celery with pb, 1/2 cup watermelon 3:00 - 1 apple, handful of almonds 6:00 - grilled salmon, 1 cup asparagus, large salad 7:30 - absolutely starving!!!!! I drink water throughout the day, take 1 acidopholus tablet in the morning on an empty stomach, 1 calcium and 1 magnesium and a fish oil supplement in the morning and at supper time. Is my body just in carb withdrawal? It's been about 2 weeks since I cut back on the evening carbs. I do feel better and have been sleeping better but I hate this evening hunger." In my response to Cindy, I recommend Mt. Capra Double Bonded Whey Protein or LivingProtein as two late night snack options... Congratulations to Cindy, who was nominated as the top question for this week's podcast! Cindy will receive a free month of membership to the Body Transformation Club, full access to the Club's secret video page, the life-changing piece of Club mail that I will personally send him each week, and much more.
