On this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast, writer and director Juan José Campanella (THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES, VIENTOS DE AGUA, SON OF THE BRIDE) joins us for a conversation about his career (of which we have been longtime and passionate fans). After moonlighting as a film student and watching odd-paired double bills at local theaters in Buenos Aires, Juan attended film school at NYU and eventually returned to Argentina after 10 years to continue his career. We learn how Juan and his team pulled off the stadium scene in THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES and why he conceived of the single-shot aesthetic for that particular moment in the film. Juan later shares how his longtime creative partnership with actor Ricardo Darín has developed over the years and what Juan saw in a performance of Ricardo's that made him believe he was a formidable actor. Juan also shares his approach to rehearsals and how he's helped actors justify lines that, initially, they have difficulty delivering. Towards the end, Juan reflects on the differences between television and film, the response towards a film based on its distribution strategy, and the changing tastes of audiences. - Recommended Viewing: THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES - This episode is sponsored by the Dallas Film Commission Instagram: @dallasfilmcommission

Gripping legal procedural ARGENTINA, 1985 continues the Dads education in the South American countries cinema following our earlier viewing of THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES and this shares some similarities with that dazzling crime drama not least of which is star Ricardo Darin. Download Podcast TranscriptWhy are movie awards important? Today’s guest, Axel Kuschevatzky, will answer this controversial question. Axel is an Argentine film journalist, screenwriter, and producer. He was a producer on the film The Secret in Their Eyes, which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 82nd Academy Awards. He grew up in Argentina, and fell in love with cinema as a child. Since then, he has dreamed of being a filmmaker, but life led him to studying advertising writing and working on television; at first, as a television reporter specialized in film, and later as part of the production of a channel's programming. A few years ago he was also hired by TNT, which handles the Oscars for Latin America, and his life took an unexpected turn when he received a call from Juan José Campanella to work as a producer for The Secret in Their Eyes. One could say that he had beginner's luck, but you can see that through watching and talking about movies, he also learned how to make them.Highlights Axel tells us what attracted him to film and why he started working on television instead of working on movies. He explains what it was like to go from talking about movies to making them.Differences between producing in Argentina and Europe; inflation rates that affect budgets. What makes him interested in betting on a project; having a clear motivation to commit.Axel explains why awards are important. He tells us what he thinks of the term Oscar Bait. The difference between the Golden Globes and the Oscars and why the Golden Globes do not represent what the industry thinks of itself. To learn more about Axel, follow him on Instagram, and follow him on Twitter.Interested in knowing more about the show? When scholars look back at the history of human development it's almost certain that our greatest invention will be deemed to be language, eclipsing even lead paint, pornography and that device that delivers babies through centrifugal force by spinning the mother in a circle. There are many languages: more than 7000 in fact, although 23 of those account for in excess of half of the worlds population. Between the 5 of us Bad Dads we've just about mastered speaking English, so the idea that we could sit down and generate an entire Top 5 Movies Not In English seems ludicrous but somehow we've managed it.As that discussion proves there are many fine movies in what is now known as International Cinema. One such effort from Argentinian director Juan José Campanella caught Peter Andre's eye so we sat down this week to watch 2009's The Secret In Their Eyes. A sprawling crime drama set against the historical backdrop of the impending seizure of power by the military junta in Argentina which ruled from the mid 70's through to the early 80's, the movie follows Ricardo Darín's Benjamín Esposito, a retired Argentinian federal justice agent, as he attempts to write a novel chronicling the unsatisfactorily closed case of a violent rape and murder. The investigation is intimately intertwined with the never-quite realised love for his boss Irene Hastings (Soledad Villamil) lending an unmistakeable air of sadness to already intensely affecting circumstances. No less profound is Netflix's Grizzy & The Lemmings, an animated tv show in which nature's vicious reality is exposed. The protagonists are species chosen from opposite ends of the animal kingdom and the equilibrium in their conflict maintained by pitting the huge and ferocious 'Grizzy' (a grizzly bear) against the cunning and fast 'The Lemmings' (some lemmings). Caught in an endless cycle of escalating violence much like the devastating gang warfare of the Bloods and Crips, the show's French creators Josselin Charier and Antoine Rodelet cite a startling inspiration for the shows villainous lemmings. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. Try us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review or on our website baddadsfilm.com.Until next time, we remain...Bad Dads

With respect to The Secret In Their Eyes, Quentin Tarantino's masterpiece (?) was the best foreign-language film of 2009. It was probably the best film of 2009, period. This 158th helping of Next 100 Project talkiness is a thorough dive into this weirdly excellent movie, but we sure didn’t cover everything. The layers! Brad Pitt, Melanie Laurent, Christoph Waltz (we had trouble pronouncing his name properly) and a wonderful supporting cast elevate QT's one-of-a-kind screenplay. He's been called a rip-off artist, but his talent for creating satisfying revisionist history (not to mention revenge…always revenge with this guy) is something that no rip-off artist could do on their best day. The man is such an original. So enjoy his newest, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, later this week, but first make sure to devour all 67 minutes of this episode. "Memories are all we end up with." Anyone who has seen a Ricardo Darín film knows he has very expressive eyes. The actors in the 2009 film El Secreto de Sus Ojos, or The Secret in Their Eyes, had to have more than just expressive eyes, though. They had to be able to carry heavy amounts of subtext in their eyes. And while director Juan José Campanella’s film is largely a detective story as Darín and his team work to solve a cold case, it’s also a story about unrequited love. Luckily, Campanella had worked with Darín before so he knew Darín could do it. And Darín pulls it off effortlessly, along with his costars Soledad Villamil and Guillermo Francella. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we continue our series on actor Ricardo Darín with Campanella’s 2009 film The Secret in Their Eyes. We talk about how well this film works for us and what Campanella achieves with this magnificent film. We look at the work Darín, Villamil and Francella bring to the table, not to mention their costars Pablo Rago, Mario Alarcón, Javier Godino and Carla Quevedo. We revel in the spectacular cinematography throughout the film from director of photography Félix Monti, discussing how they frame shots, the narrow depth of field, handheld shots and more. We look at the complexities involved in creating the spectacular stadium scene, and we contrast that with discussions about some smaller scenes. We discuss some of the themes of the film and how well they are balanced across the story, and we briefly discuss the American remake and why it doesn’t work for Andy. It’s a fascinating film that sticks with you long after it ends. We love it and by now have fallen completely for the wonderful onscreen presence of Darín. Honk. Viel Spaß.
