The factory was in Steve Pateman's family for decades when in the 1990s, they started losing money to the cheaper, faster competition. Pateman appeared on BBC's Trouble at the Top documentary showing how his company switched to creating boots for transvestites who needed more security when they stood in high heels. The collection expanded to “kink wear,” dubbed “Kinky Boots” by the BBC producers, and the story took off. In 2005, director Julian Jarrold and writers Geoff Deane and Tim Firth brought the story to life (unfortunately, the factory had to close in 2000.) Joel Edgerton plays Charlie Price (the Steve Patemen substitute), and Chiwetel Ejiofor's Lola is an amalgam of several drag queens that were customers of WJ Brooks's “Divine, Provider, and Lady Provider” brands. The film has an amazing soundtrack, and Ejiofor was nominated for a Golden Globe. Harvey Fierstein wrote the book for the musical with legendary talent Cyndi Lauper creating the music and lyrics before its debut in Chicago in 2013. This week, Shane Harris speaks to Jenny Lumet and Alex Kurtzman, who co-created the new Showtime series “The Man Who Fell to Earth.” It's about an alien, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, who comes to Earth in search of technology to help save his home planet, which has been ravaged by a changing climate. He seeks out a brilliant scientist, played by Naomie Harris, who has the knowledge to help build the planet-saving device. But she is struggling to care for a young daughter and an ill father on her own and can barely make ends meet. The show is based on the cult-classic film of the same name, which starred David Bowie, as well as a novel by Walter Tevis. The new telling is an allegory about climate change, and how humans have the potential to destroy worlds and to save them. It's also an exploration of the lives of refugees and immigrants. The alien is trying to assimilate and survive in a new world whose traditions he doesn't understand but whose fate is tied up with his own. And the scientist has been forced by circumstance to leave her old life behind and is struggling to understand where she fits in a different and hostile world. Jenny Lumet and Alex Kurtzman have been working together for years and have had long and distinguished careers of their own. Jenny wrote the screenplay for “Rachel Getting Married” and has executive produced several TV series. Alex has executive produced numerous science-fiction shows, including the Star Trek series “Discovery” and “Picard.” Shane talked to the filmmakers about their careers, the stories they are moved to tell, and their creative influences. Jenny also shared some great stories from her unusual childhood. She's the daughter of Sidney Lumet, one of the 20th century's most celebrated directors, and grew up in a house surrounded by talented and eccentric artists. Much kudos goes to Chiwetel Ejiofor. Three things that stood out to me wre tips that could be used for any business owner or speaker. The only spolier here is that the movie was excellent. 1. Act and people will invest 2. Ideas always sound crazy when they are still an idea3. Sometimes you have to change your surroundings. The Filmlosophers, Eddie Villanueva and Chad Riley, share a spoiler-light review of Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange (2016) starring Benedict Cumberbatch. The latest MCU film features some trippy visuals and has received criticism for some of its casting decisions. Is the whole greater than the sum of its parts, or does its ambitious stance leave the story feeling fragmented in various segments of the multiverse? News items in this episode include another director dropout for Warner Bros. stuck-in-development-hell The Flash, as well as a recent announcement about a new, live action Snow White film from Disney.

This week we’re tearing apart the beloved romantic comedy from 2003 “Love Actually.” This star-studded cast of British regulars (and Laura Linney) intersect in a tangled web of love (I guess) in London that would make Robert Altman spin in his grave. Hugh Grant plays the lovesick Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and Billy Bob Thornton plays the president of the United States. Others include Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Emma Thompson, Martin Freeman, Andrew Lincoln, Keira Knightley, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and the late, great Alan Rickman. We wonder why people would ever consider this movie romantic, because all the characters merely confuse instant attraction and distant infatuation for love. We unpack the uneasiness of Liam Neeson’s creepy step-son, Laura Linney’s bizarre relationship with her mentally ill brother, and the famous holding-cue-cards-at-the-door scene. Keating deals with his inexplicable untoward thoughts about certain cartoon characters while we also try to figure out why this movie feels the need to countdown the weeks until Christmas, and what exactly Billy Bob Thornton means by saying, “nice pipes.” Tell us what you think by chatting with us (@filmsnuff) on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, or by shooting us an email over at mailbag@filmsnuff.com. "Be prepared, son. That's my motto. Be prepared." When Shane Black was paid $1.75 million for his spec script “The Last Boy Scout,” it was the most any screenwriter had been paid for their script up to that point. It wouldn't take long before that record was broken, but the bar had been set – and more importantly, the expectations – for what Shane Black the screenwriter could deliver. Unfortunately, the production was riddled with problems and the film struggled to make its money back. It didn't kill Black's career, but it may have signaled the beginning of the end for the spec script boom happening in the early 90s.  Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our Shane Black series with Tony Scott's 1991 action extravaganza “The Last Boy Scout.” We talk about what Black brought to the table with his script and how it changed due to infighting amongst the above-the-line team involved in the production. We chat about the perfection of Bruce Willis in his role contrasted with the struggle we have with Damon Wayans as Willis' inevitable sidekick. We touch on the goods and bads of Blackisms and Black's storytelling themes he returns to time and again. We look at the nature of Scott's films, how this fits into his body of work and why perhaps some of his ardent fans really love this movie. And we talk about the misogyny laced throughout the story, struggling with the way women are treated compared with what the screenwriter's intentions likely were.  It's a frustrating film because it had a lot of promise but never quite gets there. Still, we have a great conversation about it. Tune in!
