She also discusses Moral Monday, a Poor People's event at the capitol on April 17th at noon that will raise awareness among elected officials about poverty, systemic racism, militarism, ecological devastation, and denial of healthcare in our state. She wants people to come out and use their voices to tell our elected officials to stop trying to legislate hate, stop taking away human rights and voting rights and focus on helping hurting people in our state.    Angela Montalvo is a U.S. Army veteran and Arabic linguist who graduated from the Defense Language Institute - Foreign Language Center at the Presidio of Monterey, CA. Nancy E. Petty began her ministry at Pullen Memorial Baptist Church in June of 1992. She has served Pullen in the role of senior pastor since 2002. Prior to being called as the pastor, she served Pullen as the Minister of Christian Education and Associate Pastor. As Pullen's pastor her role is to function as the spiritual guide of the congregation, performing duties of preaching, teaching, counseling and visitation, to honor the traditions that have developed over the years at Pullen, and to initiate new traditions that capture the theology of Pullen and the spirit of the members. Through her role as Pullen's pastor, Nancy is known as a community faith leader speaking out on issues of social justice, interreligious dialogue, and inclusion of the LGBTQIA+ community. She is chair of the Board for Repairers of the Breach, a non- profit organization that “seeks to build a moral agenda rooted in a framework that uplifts our deepest moral and constitutional values to redeem the heart and soul of our country”.  She is a contributor to several books written on the Moral Monday movement in North Carolina and has been interviewed several times on Frank Stasio's The State of Things, WUNC program. Nancy's ministry has been recognized by the following awards: 2011 W. W. Finlator Award-Wake County ACLU; 2013 Women of Influence Humanitarian Award, Hannah Keith S.F. Inc.; 2014 North Carolina NAACP Minister of the Year Award; 2015 Human Relations Commission City of Raleigh Award; 2016 Champions for Children Award, North Carolina Foundation for Public School Children; and the 2018 Neighbor to Neighbor Award, As Salam Islamic Center, Raleigh, NC. In September 2019, The Center for American Progress listed Nancy as one of nine ministers to watch in our nation in 2019.  She is married to Karla Oakley. Karla works in education reform and is often traveling with her work. They have two daughters (Jasmine and Nora), two cats (Tasha and Leo), and one spoiled Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (Louis).  When asked what people should know about her, Nancy responded: “Tell them that I am blessed beyond measure because I get to pastor the best church in the world. Not because it is perfect – it's not – but because the people are amazingly authentic and they truly care about making a difference in the world. Tell them that I love what I do and who I get to do it with. Tell them that I love people, I hate flying (but will board a plane when it means I get to extend Pullen's ministry to other places), I collect old watches, and I deeply enjoy the North Carolina mountains. A relaxing day for me is being at home with Karla and Louis with no agenda. But most importantly, I want people to know that what matters to me in life is having the courage to take the risks in life that help those who are struggling and suffering, and help me grow in compassion, grace, wisdom, and love for all God's people.” Connect with Rev. Dr. Reverend William Barber, co-chair of the Poor People's Campaign, initiated by Dr. Martin Luther King, talks about the Selma-to-Montgomery Style, 4-Day march in Texas to Challenge Attacks on the Right to Vote, which consists of a 27 mile trek from Georgetown to Austin, TX. The event is part of the organization's national Moral Monday direct actions which are designed to demand an end to the filibuster, passage of the full For the People Act, and complete restoration of the Voting Rights Act. The group is also urging passage of a minimum living wage of $15 per hour. The Poor People's campaign and partners will begin the Texas events with meetings with Democratic and Republican legislators on June 26, before engaging in a 27-mile trek from Georgetown to Austin, Texas, July 27 through July 30. As Democratic legislators in Texas fled the state in search of federal assistance pushing back on anti-voting measures there, the Rev. Liz Theoharis and the Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II are organizing a march involving members of the Poor People's Campaign, including clergy, religious and moral leaders, who earlier called for a season of nonviolent direct action in support of voting rights, a $15 minimum wage, and an end to the filibuster. “It is a mistake to think that racism only impacts Black people,” said the Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II. “It impacts us all and the collective impact necessitates a collective response.” Rev. Dr. William J. SPECIAL BONUS EPISODEWarning: This episode is political in nature. Depending where you are on the political spectrum you may find this upsetting. We don’t think that we are better than anyone else and we know that not all people share our political viewpoint. If you think that you can’t be a Christian unless you are socially and fiscally conservative, you may want to skip this one.Have you wondered how so many evangelical Christians have come to support Donald Trump? Good question. Maybe, just maybe they are following a different Jesus. Rector’s Cupboard gets political – kind of. Does the Jesus of the Republican Party look anything like the Jesus of the Bible, the Jesus of history? Turns out, not really. Our guest, Dr. Anthony Keddie outlines how “Republican Jesus” came to be. The origins of this particular Jesus are not quite biblical. Have you wondered how Jesus got to be a gun toting, tax averse, anti-gay crusader? Good question. Articles, Books, and References:Republican Jesus - Anthony KeddieThe Politics of Evangelical Identity – Lydia BeanAmerican Prophets – Jack JenkinsInspiration Cube Ad  Episode Terminology: Tea Party - a populist political movement in the United States that gained momentum during the administration of Barack Obama. It included distrust of elites and experts and got its name from a sense of identifying with the original American protest against British rule. The Tea Party paved the way for much of the populism that finds voice many followers of Donald Trump. Dominionism (Dominion Theology) - A particular theological (sometimes philosophical) understanding which holds the view that God’s work in the world is expressed through adherents exercising power and control (dominion) in a given culture. Current advocates of dominionism include large parts of Hillsong (music and teaching) and much of the Christian nationalist movement (Franklin Graham, etc.) Dominion theology tends to many problems and excesses. The assumption is that God will work his mission through the exercise of power held by the right people (the dominionists themselves). These people begin to think that it is their call and mission to gain power in the nation and in the world (not exactly reminiscent of the way of Jesus). William Barber II – Poor People’s CampaignA Pastor and political activist in the United States. Barber’s “Moral Monday” marches and much of his work focus on showing a more fulsome idea of the moral than the sometimes narrow view of right wing Christian understanding.

The South is poised to once again play a pivotal role in this year's presidential election. From the end of the Civil War right up until today, North Carolina has served as a battleground state between the majority of people that at various points have pushed for transformational change and a powerful minority bent on perpetuating divisions along racial, gender and class lines through state-sanctioned and vigilante violence or exclusion dressed up as political moderation. Despite being lauded as a leader of the progressive, so-called New South, North Carolina led the way in constructing Jim Crow segregation following Reconstruction, resisted the integration of public schools after the Supreme Court's 1954 decision striking down separate but equal and boasted more Ku Klux Klan members at the height of the Civil Rights Movement during the 1960s than all the other Southern states combined. More recently, following the Republican takeover of the state legislature in 2010, special interest groups like the American Legislative Exchange Council targetted the Tar Heel state to serve as a laboratory for new and increasingly sophisticated ways of using policy to preserve power in the hands of the few through gerrymandering and by restricting people, primarily people of color, from exercising their right to vote. Unfortunately, the Southern predicament has become the scourge of the nation. Variations of the voter suppression tactics used in North Carolina have been deployed throughout the country and they have been on full display during the coronavirus pandemic. Formerly incarcerated people in Florida were recently denied access to the ballot box because of outstanding fines. The closure of polling sites in Milwaukee during the April primary election forced Black and Latinx people to wait in long lines to vote at grave risk to their health. On the national level, recent cuts to the United States Postal Service could play a major role in the outcome of the 2020 presidential election when an estimated 80 million Americans are expected to vote by mail. In this week's episode, host Jonathan Michels talks with Robert Korstad and James Leloudis to examine these recent attacks on our democracy through the lens of the long struggle for voting rights in North Carolina. Korstad is a professor emeritus of public policy at Duke University and Leloudis is a professor of history at UNC-Chapel Hill. They just wrote a new book called Fragile Democracy: The Struggle Over Race and Voting Rights in North Carolina. For a transcription of this episode, please click here. Kimrey's first encounter with activism was in Jacksonville, when a same-sex couple had to pay extra for a family membership at the ‘Hands-On Children's Museum’ because the museum argued they weren't ‘really a family.’ After she returned to North Carolina, Kimrey started to notice Pat McCrory and started going to "Moral Monday" protests. Kimrey is also the author of the blog ‘Functional Human Being,’ which contains a collection of political writings, opinions, personal insights and occasional accompanying music video.” And today I’ve got her on the show to talk about her activism.Links:•Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/madisworldofpie •Twitter: https://twitter.com/madisworldofpie •Blog: http://functionalhumanbeing.blogspot.com/ •Real Life Beyond Faith: http://www.reallifebeyondfaith.com/ •Help a Five-Year-Old Go to School: https://www.gofundme.com/help-a-fiveyearold-go-to-school •The Trans Podcaster Visibility Initiative: https://www.facebook.com/transvisiblepodcaster/ •Dream Youth: http://dreamyouth.bandcamp.com •Asher Silberman: http://www.ashersilberman.com/ •My Twitter: http://twitter.com/tmamone •Bi Any Means on Twitter: http://twitter.com/bianymeanspod •Bi Any Means on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/bianymeanspodcast •The Bi Any Means/Biskeptical Podcast Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/179617892470906/ •Email: bianymeanspodcast@gmail.com •Listener line: 410-690-3558 •My Patreon page: http://www.patreon.com/tmamone•PayPal link: http://paypal.me/tmamone •Bi Any Means Blog: http://freethoughtblogs.com/bianymeans/

21 September 2015 - We survived the launch! It would have been better had it not taken us about eight hours to record the show only to later discover that we still had a strange audio problem in a couple of places but all-in-all we are still in one piece and we are downright hoppy with the result. It’s hard to be anything but thrilled with the end product because we had such a wonderful time talking with SUNY professor and Daily Kos feature writer, Denise Oliver-Velez. I think it’s obvious that Dee is basically a progressive rock star. She answered questions about hope, Puerto Rico, the Latino get-out-the-vote effort and education. I especially loved the conversation about the fact that the Moral Mondays platform and the Black Lives Matter platforms are putting forward issues that are not “new” which is contrary to the commentary by mainstream media. Dee, with her wealth of perspective on progressive movements closed out by commenting on the difference between getting out the word in the 1970s versus the social media of today but she was sure to say, “The revolution will be slogged, not blogged.” We make change by talking with one another directly. Will and I began the show talking a little bit about how we got started in the space that ultimately lead to “Hopping Mad.” We then went on to talk about the need for a new New Deal via job guarantee programs. So, here it is, the very first Hopping Mad…

From Ferguson to the Nation: What if Moral Mondays Came Everyday?

The Moral Monday movement came to Missouri. What if it spread nationally, and to the rest of the week? Police arrested more than fifty people in front of the Ferguson Police Department Monday October 13, during demonstrations against the police killing of black men in the area, including teenager Michael Brown last August. The one person police have yet to arrest, is officer Darren Wilson, Brown's shooter. And that was one of the complaints of the protestors. Organizers planned the action as part of a weekend of resistance, inspired by the weekly Moral Monday protests in North Carolina which which started a year ago, in protest of right wing attacks. Among those arrested in Ferguson Monday was Cornell William Brooks president of the NAACP and Dr. Cornel West, along with religious leaders of every faith and gender and race. Critics called everyone "outside agitators" of course. But police impunity is hardly a local problem. The actions came as a study by Pro Publica revealed that black teens were about 21 times as likely as their white peers to be shot and killed by police, and as the online activist group Color of Change kicked off a campaign to tweet the name of one black police killing victim every hour, for the duration of the Ferguson protests. There are plenty of names because according to Pro Publica, in the seven years leading up to 2012, white officers killed a black person at least twice a week. What next? The power of the Moral Monday movement has come from its persistence and the breadth of the alliances behind it. Anti-austerity activists teamed up with reproductive rights campaigners, union and religious leaders. They have distinct issues and experiences, but they've made common cause. Missouri's seen some of that sort of multi-denominational action. Many workers in the St. Louis area Fast Food campaign, for example, were in the streets protesting the killing of Brown at the start. Still, it's also true that in our increasingly re-segregated nation, too much ignorance continues. Whether its willful or not, is almost beside the point. On the eve of the protests white residents in St. Louis told the Washington Post they'd been surprised, even "shocked" by the racial divisions exposed since the killing of Brown Listen. Friends don't let friends drink and drive. It's too dangerous. What if we, especially we White people didn't let our friends live in oblivious privilege. It's just as dangerous for the public health. What if, every time some TV agitator accused the NAACP of sending in outsiders, we answered that there is no getting outside police killings.... What if, Bill McKibben who led hundreds of thousands to protest climate justice in New York, stood up and said: “That's me you're talking about.” We can make common cause. It may take Moral Mondays, and Tuesdays and Wednesdays. But perhaps at the end of it, we'll have police as ready to arrest their own shooters as they are speedy to arrest Cornel West. Upon hearing Haskins' song, acclaimed North Carolina artists Caitlin Cary (of Whiskeytown) and Jon Lindsay decided to band together and form the NC Music Love Army, a project that snowballed into something far more encompassing than anyone could imagine. Within the 6 months since the Moral Monday protests, the NC Music Love Army has already written, recorded and now released a full-length album of protest songs geared towards the N.C. state legislators. Last week I spoke with Caitlin Cary, Jon Lindsay and Skylar Gudasz about the formation of the Love Army, some of the pitfalls that they've come across since its inception, and where the project will go from here. This past Saturday (Nov. 30) the group celebrated the album's release at Cat's Cradle, a show that was filled with protest anthems both new and old, along with a slew of special guests. During our conversation, we speak about these member's favorite protest songs, what listeners could expect from the show and heard an unreleased song from the Love Army, “Dear Mr. McCrory.”

Excellence in Progressive Radio. The Liberal Fix team welcomes back North Carolina Rev. Mark Sandlin.  Rev. Sandlin, a Huffington Post contributor and founder of the God Article will join us to discuss North Carolina politics and Moral Monday, an effort of a broad range of activist groups to draw attention to and protest the efforts of conservative legislators and the laws they are passing and proposing.  Every Monday they gather in Raleigh and hundreds have been arrested.  The movement has a decidedly Christian Left influence, which confounds many right wingers, as they stand up for the rights of women, regressive tax laws, minorities, and the LGBT community in the name of compassion and non-judgement. As always, we offer a recap of the week in Progressive or Liberal Politics. News, Commentary and Analysis.  This is a must-add to your can't-miss directory of Progressive Podcasts or Liberal Podcasts. Hosted by Indiana writer Dan Bimrose and co-hosted by Iowa activist Crystal Kayser, sociologist Keith Brekhus from Montana and our producer Naomi Minogue from California, every week the three of them feature a special guest and tackle those tough issues with a perspective that comes from outside the beltway. If you are interested in being a guest and for any other inquiries or comments concerning the show please contact Naomi Minogue via email: naomi@liberalfixradio.com.
