In this episode I interview educator Silvina Andrea Fernandes from Buenos Aires, Argentina about the role emotional intelligence plays in the language learning process. Silvina describes two key components of Emotional Intelligence, being 'intrapersonal emotional intelligence' and 'interpersonal emotional intelligence'. She defines these and gives practical examples of how she trains young people and teachers to develop the necessary attributes of curiosity, trust, surprise, resilience, determination, patience, courage, risk-taking and critically self-love in order to become successful learners, teachers or managers. Silvina is a trained teacher of English as a Foreign Language and she describes her own journey into a career in neuropsychoeducation as it is applied to teaching and learning. We feel the podcast will be of interest to teachers and learners alike and we hope it will stimulate discussion and thinking about the teaching and learning experience and why we sometimes feel so challenged when learning a foreign language. Welcome back to another episode of the believe move grow podcast.  I discovered todays guest from my brother!  Long story short, I was asking my brother, who is head of art at an academy school in London, who would be a great person to speak to regarding PE in the Uk?  Without a moment's hesitation he recommended Shaun Dowling!   To provide some background on Shaun, he is a former Head of PE and Director of Specialism (sport) who progressed to vice principal roles in two secondary schools. Having taken a national role with the Youth Sport Trust Shaun was given the opportunity of delivering some teacher training in Iraq as part of an EU-funded contract with the British Council. In 2013 Shaun appeared before the Education Select Committee to give evidence on ‘School Sport following London 2012'. In 2014 United Learning published ‘The A-Z of School Improvement through PE and Sport' which Shaun produced and co-edited. He sits on the Board of Trustees for Sports Leaders UK, the Board of Directors for the Adur Outdoor Activities Centre and the Education Board for Apex2100 In today's conversation I chatted to Shaun all about his work at United Learning, a group of schools providing excellent education. We explored Shaun's time in Iraq when he was contributing to teacher training at a time when the country was in a re-building stage and how the power of teacher training brought together individuals from different religious and ethnic groups.  We discussed whether the euphoria from the London 2012 Olympics towards sport carried over into sport participation in schools? Shaun spoke about how United Learning surveyed 6000 students to identify the student voice and fin out what they wanted from physical education. We also addressed the hire wire balancing act between addressing the physical EDUCATION part of PE whilst getting in enough moderate to vigorous physical activity during the day for children. In today’s programme we are going to have an in-depth discussion on the trend of sector specialisation. Sector specialism has become a decisive differentiator for managers when executing deals and LPs appear to be pivoting towards sector specialists in greater numbers. But why is this? Do sector specialists deliver superior returns? How do LPs allocate capital by sector, on what criteria are sector specialists assessed, and what happens when there are long-term shifts in sector performance?

Do you have a specialism? Many psychologists and therapists in private practice don't. Read why you need one if you are serious about doing more than therapy and how to find one. Why every psychologist and therapist needs a specialismThis week in the DMTT membership we are looking at business planning and specifically planning out what projects we are all going to be working on in 2021. In writing the materials for the course I realised how crucial it is to be clear on your specialism, the projects you want to work on and the ideal clients for each project before you start to even consider creating products or services or marketing.  In this episode I'm going to talk to you about: Why you need a specialism and why you might not know what it is yet. How a specialism is different from your ICA but how it helps you find them Why thinking in “projects” will help you to plan a private practice that feels more professionally fulfilling. PP makes it easy NOT to have a specialism as insurance referrals can be broad and we often want to take EVERYONE because we are scared of not having enough work. There is also the imposter syndrome… In the early stage so of my practice my imposter syndrome was so huge that I literally told people that I had no specialist skills and actually refused to see anyone who might require any kind of specialist. Even now when I get an email from a prospective client who says they have chosen me because I am “an expert” in birth trauma I feel like replying saying “oh no you got it wrong, here are the contact details for a REAL specialist”   BUT I have learned that, even if it feels uncomfortable, a specialism is vital because it: Helps you to avoid burnout/overwhelm because you can focus all of your activity on one subject. All your CPD, all your marketing, all of your resources are all on one topic. Doesn't that sound less overwhelming? Provides the reassurance our clients need (wouldn't you rather see a specialist when you are struggling?) Helps you build authority, credibility and an audience who trust you enough to buy products and services. Helps you identify your https://psychologists.drrosie.co.uk/the-business-of-psychology/ideal-client-avatar-psychologists-therapists-marketing/ (ideal clients (ICAs)) for your services.  Your specialism is the problem clients are most likely to want your help to solve. Examples of specialisms versus client groups Think about some very successful psychologists and therapists that you have heard of. https://www.besselvanderkolk.com/ (Bessel Van der Kolk) - the trauma and the body guy. You know what his specialist subject is but when you look across his career he has applied that specialism to a whole host of different client groups/ICAs.  A specialism can be quite a broad thing as it is about the struggle that people are facing. Through your career, you might help lots of different client groups that all share a similar struggle. For example, if your specialism is trauma and the body you might start your career helping veterans, move on to helping people who have been through birth trauma and further down the line help healthcare professionals who worked on acute wards during COVID-19. The time and energy you have put into the CPD and research associated with your specialism can be applied in many different ways to different people through your career. BUT each project you work on through your career will be targeted towards specific ICAs. This helps hugely with marketing and making your message clear for the people who need to hear it and also reduces the overwhelm for you. Why your specialism might not be what you think it isPersonally, I think the way that NHS services are structured often does not help us (or clients) in the best way. To me, it doesn't make sense to have services such as “adult mental health” when the only thing the people using the service have in common is that they are 18-65. The reality in most...

GINcast: the Gastrointestinal Nursing Podcast

How the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has changed the way inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) nurses deliver care to patients with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Benjamin Wakefield and Lisa Younge (IBD Nurse Consultant, St Mark's) talk to Catherine Stansfield (IBD Nurse Consultant, Salford Royal) and Pearl Avery (IBD Nurse Specialist, Dorset County/IBD Registry) about maintaining patient contact and managing medication at a distance, as well as answering difficult questions with rapidly moving information and overcoming reluctance to attend clinic. The conversation also reflects on how nurses can best handle the impact of redeployment, remote working and isolation on workload, wellbeing and professional independence. Finally, it considers how NHS IBD teams can maintain service provision over the next year, plan for a second wave and identify and protect high-risk patients, as well as learn from the pandemic and embrace new ways of delivering care. Welcome back to another episode of the Serial Stress Killer podcast with your host Chris Hackett. In this episode, Chris interviews Matthew Rundle,  the award-winning co-founder of Mayfair Aesthetics, one of London’s leading laser hair removal clinics. Chris talks about how he came to setting up his company, the fundamentals and values for his business, and how he keeps his stress levels low. Key Takeaways What Is Aesthetic Clinics? We are a series of small boutique clinics focused on laser hair removal. Our lasers are really up to date so that they work for all skins types not just fairer skins types which have meant that we have been able to open our potential customers to everyone. We keep standards really high as we are small and only use laser hair removal, so we aren’t running around doing lots of different jobs and doing them less well. Is It More Stressful for a Business Owner to Keep High Standards? I would be more stressed if the service we do at Mayfair Aesthetics wasn’t delivering to a high quality of service. That would be stressful. We place a lot of emphasis on quality of customer service and ensuring that our customers get the best possible experience Design The Experience To Avoid the Problems I’d Seen Before. Matthew highlights that his experience working for other companies in the beauty industry and seeing day to day problems they had in their business has been fundamental to the thinking behind his business. So one of the aims of the business was to solve a lot of these problems from day one. For example, having electronic medical records of customers rather than in paper form. That has saved time and lowered potential stress levels Having a Signed Agreement of the Expected Results. It’s really important that this is signed at the start of a course of treatment. This has helped prevent and avoid a lot of problems and complaints. This makes sure that the expectations of the customers are managed effectively and reduces complaints. It helps to make sure your staff are healthy and are less stressed so they aren’t having to deal with unhappy customers. What Do You do to Look After Your Staff’s Mental Health? The way I wanted the business to run was for staff to be able to get on with their job and not have to deal with the problems of a badly run business. From day one we decided that we weren’t going to operate like previous places that I had worked in. We added extra time in our appointments so staff aren’t rushing around, and you allow customers to be a little late, it means that everyone is more relaxed How Big A Problem are Unhappy Customers if You’re not set up Correctly? In the service industry that is where the biggest stress comes from. Other areas like stock or cash flow can also be stressful if you have managed them badly. We always try to make sure that we have lots of stock that will last for weeks. Being prepared for possible problems and trying to avoid them is a key aspect. Was running Mayfair Aesthetics what you Expected? It is similar to how I have run other businesses before as a General Manager. I have been in roles in the past where I was doing everything where company owners had abdicated their interest in the company. But not having to report to someone else who I didn’t trust and think has been a positive experience as I have 25 years experience in the beauty industry which has given me valuable experience and insight into the business. Do you consciously do things to keep your stress levels low? Additionally, to the business, I do some management consultancy where I go in and help other companies. I can help sometimes improve their marketing, PR to help them improve their sales. That’s very rewarding but I also enjoy reading, seeing friends and making sure I sleep well. Specialise Rather than go for lots of different types of treatments. Specialism has been a key business model for us. We have focused in on one treatment which has meant that we are able to deliver a high-quality service and not get bogged down with other areas. Our location is essential all of our stores are close to a tube station so that you can extend your potential customer base out of the area you work in. The building and environment have to be beautiful, with a strong logo. Your pricing strategy has to be effective as well. If you are charging low prices why is that and can you deliver the same level of service with those prices. Best Moments ‘It’s all about being very well prepared in each clinic to ensure that the standards are kept high.’ ‘Design The Experience To Avoid the Problems I’d Seen Before’ ‘Set up the expectations of your customers from the start.’ ‘Being prepared for possible problems.’ ‘Training is paramount.’ ‘Your have the independence but also the accountability when you run your own business.’ ‘Getting enough sleep is really key.’ ‘Specialism has helped to develop our business.’ ‘Make sure your staff are 100% trained.’ ‘Good reviews are key from your customers.’ ‘Know all aspects of your business.’ ABOUT THE HOST After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on. In this episode, we focus on how to empower learners as researchers by making them specialists on a sub-topic within their discipline. This approach is simple but effective. Start by dividing aspects of the subject you are teaching into sub-topics or research areas. Each student is assigned one of these to pursue as a personal research project throughout the module, compiling a portfolio of their reflections and findings along the way. Their final portfolio submission demonstrate an application of the general content studied (common to all students) to their specific research area (unique to them). Tab Betts talks to Professor Lynne Murphy, who is Professor of Linguistics at the University of Sussex, and Dr. Paolo Oprandi, who is a Senior Learning Technologist at the University of Sussex. Lynne has recently published a book, entitled The Prodigal Tongue, which explores the love-hate relationship between British and American English (https://theprodigaltongue.com).
