LIVE from Transform 2025! Adria Ferrier is the founder of Elayne, an AI copilot for financial and estate management. Elayne's mission is to modernize estate planning and affairs settlements, making it more accessible, efficient, and integrated into daily life. She launched Elayne after experiencing firsthand the disjointed, frustrating challenges families face after loss, along with its impact on careers. After her mom passed away, she spent months navigating banks, insurance companies, lawyers, taxes, and doing countless administrative tasks—like canceling her mom's subscriptions and deactivating her social media—each with its own complex, manual process. The burden, on top of the impact of losing her mother, took a toll on her performance at work. Ultimately, she resigned, a decision made by nearly 50% of employees within a year of a major loss. Adria started her career in corporate M&A before transitioning to private equity at Blackstone in NYC. She later earned her MBA from Wharton and joined Permira's healthcare investing team, deploying billions in capital throughout her career. In her early 20s, she helped launch a patient advocacy group for EGFR-positive lung cancer with her mom, directing hundreds of thousands toward EGFR-related research projects. Adria grew up between Debrecen, Hungary, and Providence, RI. She has lived in nine countries and speaks four languages. We dig into: - What key flaws in estate management inspired you to launch Elayne, and how does AI solve them? - How can companies better support employees navigating loss, so they don't feel forced to resign? - From private equity to entrepreneurship, what's been the biggest mindset shift in building Elayne? - The passion and story behind her company and so much more! Uri previously came on the podcast in 2022 and talked about the evolution of fraud prevention over the last 20 years. I re-released that episode back in August because I loved the story so much. At that time, we talked mostly about his previous company, BioCatch, which sold a majority stake to Permira earlier this year at a 1.3 billion dollar valuation. In this episode, we pick up the story with the evolution of fraud over the last few years, including why money laundering and check fraud still present such massive risk areas to banks. Mimecast, a company started by two South Africans is a global leader in cybersecurity specialising in advanced email and collaboration security. After trading on Nasdaq for six years, the company decided to go private in November 2015 in a $5.8 billion deal with Permira. In an interview with Biznews, co-founder and former CEO Peter Bauer shared his journey from being a school leaver who opted not to attend university to starting his first business with 'oceans behind the ears'. Bauer explained how he was “hell-bent on getting into tech” in the early 90s. He recounted how his first company, which he sold to Idion, built the first news factory for what later became News24. After the sale, Bauer moved to London where he met fellow South African techie Neil Murray and started Mimecast. According to Bauer, “he fell in love with the process of building a company.” Discussing his decision to step down as Mimecast's CEO, Bauer emphasised that it was the right time to hand over the reins, with the appointed CEO, Mark van Zadelhoff, being the ideal candidate. However, Bauer remains engaged by staying on the board. He also revealed his shift from technology to eco and social justice projects, expressing a desire to support entrepreneurs. Bayer shared that he bought a mountain in Cape Town “by accident.” Additionally, he offered valuable insights for new tech entrepreneurs and discussed the increasing challenges that generative AI will have in predominantly digital workplaces

Welcome to another episode of "The Equity Uncovered Podcast," where we dig deep into the world of investments, finance, and the different types of equity that shape our financial landscapes. I'm your host, Adrian Lawrence, and today we're exploring the intriguing concept of "Sweet Equity" in relation to private equity investment in the UK. Sweet Equity, as we've discussed before on this podcast, refers to the intangible assets that accumulate over time – knowledge, experience, relationships, and personal growth. But how does Sweet Equity fit into the world of private equity investments? The Intriguing connection between Sweet Equity and private equity investments. To kick things off, can you explain how Sweet Equity plays a role in the context of private equity investments in the UK? Certainly. In the world of private equity, Sweet Equity refers to the intangible value that investors bring to a company beyond their financial investment. It's the expertise, industry knowledge, and networks they leverage to help the company grow and succeed. This is especially crucial in the UK, where the private equity market is vibrant and competitive. That's a great point. How do private equity investors, or "sponsors," as they're often called, build Sweet Equity in the companies they invest in? Private equity investors often build Sweet Equity through active involvement in the companies they back. They bring not only capital but also their industry expertise, management skills, and access to a vast network of professionals. They work closely with the company's management team to improve operations, implement growth strategies, and create value. This approach results in the accumulation of Sweet Equity, which benefits both the investor and the company. That's a unique perspective on how private equity investors contribute to the success of the companies they invest in. Can you share some examples of how Sweet Equity has played a role in private equity success stories in the UK? Certainly. One example is the fashion retailer New Look. When it faced financial challenges, private equity firm Permira invested in the company. They not only provided the necessary capital but also brought in experienced retail executives to revamp the business. Their industry knowledge and strategic guidance helped turn the company around. This is a prime example of Sweet Equity in action within the private equity realm. It's great to see real-world examples of Sweet Equity's impact. How can companies seeking private equity investment in the UK identify investors who bring valuable Sweet Equity to the table? It's essential for companies to thoroughly vet potential investors. Look at their track record, not just in terms of financial returns but also their involvement in other portfolio companies. Do they have industry-specific expertise and connections? Are they willing to actively engage with the management team? These are signs that an investor might bring valuable Sweet Equity to the partnership. Excellent advice for companies seeking private equity investment. Before we wrap up, do you have any final thoughts or insights regarding Sweet Equity in the context of private equity investments in the UK? I would like to emphasise that Sweet Equity is a critical factor in the success of private equity investments. Investors who actively contribute to the growth and development of their portfolio companies bring not only capital but also the intangible assets that can drive meaningful change and create value. Companies and investors that understand this concept are well-positioned for success in the dynamic UK private equity landscape. We hope you found this discussion informative and enlightening. And remember, in the world of private equity, Sweet Equity can be the secret sauce that transforms businesses and creates lasting value. Why not listen to us on Spotify. In the second of our series on private equity, we are going to discuss one of Europe's premier operators. Established as Schroder Ventures 35 years ago, the firm evolved into Permira in 1997. Today they have more than €60bn under management, employ over 450 people and operate in 16 offices worldwide. Permira has backed over 300 businesses; many of them, like Hugo Boss, Dr. Martens and McAfee software, are household names. Tara Alhadeff, Partner responsible for brand strategy in the consumer space, discusses Permira's approach, and in particular why ‘heritage brands need a different lens' and ‘why, with heritage brands, magic can happen'. She discusses the examples of Dr. Martens and Golden Goose, both current investments, and references the past deals of Hugo Boss and Valentino. Tara talks about the need for long-term custody of great brands and why in some cases the size of the brand is bigger than the size of the business. She also discusses the importance of management, the relationship between Permira and portfolio companies, and how they think about exits. Zendesk has agreed to be acquired by a group of buyout firms for $10.2 billion, bringing back a deal that will be one of the biggest private-equity takeovers of the year, Wall Street Journal reports. IT services employees are in no hurry to get back to the office, according to a survey by CIEL HR, Economic Times reports. And Intel has expanded its design and engineering capacity in Bengaluru by 2000 seats. Notes: Zendesk has agreed to be acquired by a group of buyout firms for $10.2 billion, bringing back a deal that will be one of the biggest private-equity takeovers of the year, Wall Street Journal reports. The deal, with a group led by Hellman & Friedman and Permira, values the software company at $77.50 a share, Zendesk said Friday, according to the Journal. While that is a roughly 34 percent premium to the closing price on Thursday, it is down sharply from a roughly $17 billion bid from a similar group of buyout firms the company rejected in February. Three in four employees working in IT services companies in India are not coming to office even once a week despite their organisations resuming work from office, according to a survey conducted by CIEL HR, Economic Times reports. Many IT services companies are also going easy on their return-to-office policies as they fear coercion may trigger more resignations. CIEL surveyed 40 IT companies in India, including those among the top 10, employing a total of about 900,000 employees, according to ET. Fintech startups in India have written to Reserve Bank, the country's central bank, asking it to treat their prepaid payment instruments on par with bank accounts for customers who have undertaken certain verifications, TechCrunch reports. Reserve Bank last week signalled an industry-wide crackdown, saying that pre-paid instruments from non-bank companies couldn't be used to sell loans. Intel India last week announced the expansion of its design and engineering footprint with a new state-of-the-art facility in Bengaluru, adding 4.53 lakh sq. ft of space in two buildings which can accommodate 2,000 employees in total. The expansion will help the semiconductor chip giant advance cutting-edge design and engineering work in client, data centre, IoT, graphics, artificial intelligence, and automotive segments, according to its press release. Riot Games will begin background evaluation of recorded in-game voice communications on July 13 in North America, in English, PC Gamer reports. Riot said in a brief statement that the purpose of the recording is ultimately to "collect clear evidence that could verify any violations of behavioural policies,” according to PC Gamer. For now, however, recordings will be used to first develop the evaluation system that may eventually be implemented. Nothing lights me up more than a meaty conversation with a successful entrepreneur. I just bagged the elephant (You can thank me later.) Godard Abel is one of the most successful SaaS entrepreneurs you'll meet. And G2 is his Unicorn baby. After wrapping his studies at Stanford MBA and MIT Engineering, Godard was Co-Founder & CEO of BigMachines, a pioneer of the Configure, Price, Quote software category. He scaled the business from scratch to $50M revenues & 300 people, before its acquisition by Oracle. As CEO of SteelBrick, the leading Quote-to-Cash software platform, he built the team from 5 to 200 people, before its acquisition by Salesforce. And currently, Godard is Co-Founder & CEO of G2, which makes B2B tech buying easy by connecting buyers to vendors. It's “Yelp for Business Software & Services” with 1 million customer reviews & real-time ratings. 5 million tech buyers visit each month. And he's onto something big… G2 has raised over $200M from top investors: Accel, Chicago Ventures, Emergence, High Alpha, Hyde Park Venture Partners, IVP, Permira, Pritzker Group Venture Capital, Salesforce Ventures, HubSpot Ventures. I was curious to understand how Godard makes it look so easy (It's not.) He attributes not some… but ALL… of his success to “hiring & nurturing incredible people.” In this 20-minute conversation, he reveals step-by-step how to build your Unicorn team.

It's been called "The Philanthropist's Dilemma" and the "Now or Forever" question: Do I spend down or form a foundation in perpetuity? This question of course comes with many others: is this really a binary decision? How should I find my own path? How do I take into account the size of my giving, my philanthropic strategy, my co-decision makers and my life plans?Join us in conversation with Peter Smitham, Chair of Atlantic Philanthropies, to learn how philanthropists can approach decision-making around whether to spend down or to give in perpetuity. The session will last 60 minutes.Peter Smitham was a founder of Permira (formerly Schroder Ventures), a global private equity firm where he fulfilled different roles for 30 years until 2015, including managing partner and chairman. Since then he has served on the boards of MSI Reproductive Choices (formerly Marie Stopes), New Philanthropy Capital, and Population Services International. In 2004 he joined the Board of Atlantic Philanthropies - a multibillion-dollar organisation with a limited life spend down philosophy created and funded by Chuck Feeney. We talk about the life of a startup founder being loaded with pressure and stress. But one of Ireland's best known technology executives, who went from managing a $5bn division of Cisco to starting and selling his own startup, says that life in a big company was actually far more taxing than running your own business. Barry O'Sullivan spoke to Adrian Weckler about it, and a host of other things, in this week's podcast. “I never missed any of the kind of trappings of being a senior executive at a company like Cisco,” he says. “I would say the stress level of being a CEO of a startup for me was about 10pc of what it was to be a senior executive at a company like Cisco.” “When I ran a $5bn business at Cisco, it was a continuous grind. There were always presentations to the board on investments and acquisitions and so on. And every big company has lots of politics. When you've got a job like that, at a company like Cisco, it's a big job and it's very well paid. You always kind of have to be on all the time, you know?” “What was most stressful was that decisions often took a long time to make. You would think that as a very senior executive that you would have the power of all the decisions you want to make. But quite a lot of stuff had to be presented and has to be decided with your peers. At a startup you can just do it.” O'Sullivan now advises a $33bn venture firm, Permira, on investments and acquisitions. He also sits on the board of Genesys, the tech company that bought his Altocloud startup and which has just announced 200 new jobs in Galway.
