Today's Drop is a crosspost of an interview Matthew Remski did with Brianna Patten of the Surviving Satchidananda Podcast.  Patten asked him a bunch of really good questions about high control groups, both as a former member and as someone who went on to research their sociology. Matthew finds Satchidananda's Integral Yoga fascinating, because Satchidananda's ascendancy through his Woodstock headline position in 1969 initiated the inward turn of 1960s liberation movements and fostered a tradition of reactionary values dressed as counterculture. Patten asked about how Matthew got into high-control groups. He talked about how both groups he joined offered a kind of socialism, a hint of a different way to share resources. This echoed the brush with liberation theology he'd had in his Catholic upbringing. As a Gen X person, he was depoliticized, and he probably had undiagnosed depression that made him yearn for whatever impossible thing was being promised. On the leaving side, Patten asked him if the pain ever goes away. He said maybe, but only as you resocialize into a purposeful life and real friendships, and there are no guarantees. Do you remember who first taught you to pray or meditate? Was it your grandmother, or perhaps the person who taught the first yoga class you attended? We have SO many spiritual teachers on the spiritual path, and it is important to stop and thank them. In the Hindu tradition there is an annual holy day called 'Guru Purnima' which is the full moon day we honor our Guru or spiritual teacher. The word guru means dispeller of darkness, meaning the darkness of ignorance. Any teacher can be a guru (with a small g), but Guru (with a capital G) is THE Guru, the one who awakens you to the truth of your being, and THAT Guru lives within each one of us. In this encore episode, I share a simple guided meditation to help you connect with YOUR inner Guru and express your gratitude for ALL the blessings you have received. Send us Fan MailI first became aware of Danny Morel via his YouTube channel.  I watched dozens and dozens of his podcast episodes and I liked what I saw and heard.  So I signed up for one of his Awaken conferences.  I eventually went to two of the conferences in 2025.  Of course I experienced good things.  I came home and posted positive online stories of my experience and I encouraged my friends and followers to check him out. And I met some great people at the conferences who are still friends to this day. When you get 500-600+ "truth searchers" together in one space, things start to happen in the energetic realm! But then the red flags started to pop up. I became more and more uneasy with what I was seeing.  It's been nearly a year since I went to my last conference, and I feel that I now see things more clearly.This is a discussion of my experience of spending a total of six days with Danny and his team. I'm joined by my friend Patrick Prohaska in this discussion.  My experience in attending the conferences is not necessarily everyone's experience.  I attended these conferences in a very vulnerable state as I was dealing with cancer that was spreading.  And I was in a place where I wanted any hope or encouragement that I could get...I caution anyone following this type of charismatic leader to keep their eyes and ears open, and to not ignore the red flags that your own "knowing" is showing you.  We each have the truth within us, and we do not need a leader/conference speaker/guru to show us the way.  I see that now...  My hope is that Danny doesn't end up in a situation similar to that of speaker and podcaster Aubrey Marcus and the controversy surrounding him and what he was passing off as "new truth".
