It is now more commonly known as puerperal sepsis or postpartum sepsis. This condition is an infection that occurs after childbirth. In the past, it was a major cause of maternal deaths related to childbirth, especially before modern hygiene practices and antibiotics became available. Global Situation Today: - Maternal sepsis remains a serious issue and is still a significant cause of maternal deaths around the world. - The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that maternal sepsis accounts for about 10% of all maternal deaths globally. It tends to be more common in areas where many births happen at home, there are not enough skilled healthcare workers, and healthcare systems are weak. Historical Background: During Wollstonecraft's time, doctors often worked in unhygienic environments and did not yet understand germs. All the founders agreed that standing armies were a great threat to liberty. The only debate was really the best way to prevent those dangers. But they didn't come up with this view on their own - it was part of a very long tradition that was opposed to large, permanent military establishments. He gave 2 reasons why, discussed a proposed coup in 1783, responded to Hamilton's Federalist 25, proposed an amendment, and reminded people that they won't have anything close to true representation. Washington Times Article: The idea that the law must apply uniformly to all was something that the Founding Fathers considered to be of fundamental importance. It was, in James Madison’s words, something “without which every government degenerates into tyranny.” A system in which elected officials make “legal discriminations in favor of themselves and a particular class of society” is inconsistent with a free society. According to Madison, it creates a “state of things in which it may be said with some truth that the laws are made for the few, not for the many.” Madison’s words have a peculiar relevance to our times. Many Americans were disgusted, if not shocked, by a “60 Minutes” report that featured the findings of a new book, written by the Hoover Institution’s Peter Schweizer, demonstrating the alarming extent to which members of Congress are essentially immune from laws that apply to the rest of society. Many members, such as House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, have - by leveraging their political connections or insider political intelligence - reaped hundreds of thousands of dollars in profits from trading activity that likely would be illegal if done by a private citizen. In early 1788, a Weston, Massachusetts newspaper reported that, "Little else, among us, is thought or or talked of, but the new Constitution." The debate seemed to engross the attention of all classes of people, including women, who normally would be excluded from politics. . But as Massachusetts debates, the fate of the Constitution is as yet, undetermined. If Massachusetts ratifies, it is likely that the Constitution will be adopted. But if not, it seems that New York, Virginia will most likely follow their example. The debate's have consumed Americans of all political and social divisions. for the first and perhaps only time in her history, the level of political engagement is nearly one hundred percent. Even former Loyalists have and interest in the Constitution being ratified, as it would mean they would finally receive their long ago promised compensation. But no longer will States simply approve the Constitution in quick and easy conventions. In Massachusetts, where the Revolution really began, the life or death of the Constitution will face it's first real test among the States.
