HEAVY Music Interviews
A New Era Of Metal With STEFFEN KUMMERER From OBSCURA

HEAVY Music Interviews

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 17, 2025 10:47

Interview by Kris PetersWith their new album A Sonication, Germany-based metal band OBSCURA launch the second of their trilogy concept. The group's second (seventh overall) album for Nuclear Blast pivots on many fronts. Advanced, elegant yet refreshing, A Sonication sums up past endeavors effortlessly as it gazes with purpose and conviction into the future. OBSCURA are fan-renowned and critically acclaimed for challenging and then expanding upon norms. From Retribution (2004) through A Valediction (2021), the band flourished and made significant progress in a musical genre unprepared for a creative shot of German invention. A Sonication spearheads OBSCURA into a new era of extreme metal.Guitarist/vocalist Steffen Kummerer founded Obscura in 2002. Early on, he set out to improve, redefine, and push forward. Under his self-label creation, the Bavarian released debut album Retribution (2004), followed by heavy touring throughout Europe. Word quickly spread that a brand-new band from the south of Germany was on the rise. Buzz lead to a deal with U.S.-based Relapse Records. The first record out was Cosmogenesis. In Europe, Metal Hammer Germany awarded the album 6/7 while in the U.S. Cosmogenesis hit the Billboard charts at #71. The cross-continental praise and fevered momentum landed OBSCURA on high-profile tours in Europe, North America, and Japan. When follow-up Omnivium arrived in 2011, they upped their chart success, received more accolades from publications like Terrorizer, Rock Hard, and Decibel and had another massive round-world tour cycle, while enhancing and making progress on their clever brutality. OBSCURA further developed their sound on Akróasis (2016). Moored by jaw-dropping tracks like Sermon of the Seven Suns, Ode to the Sun, and the title track, Akróasis elevated OBSCURA to the highest levels of international renown.OBSCURA's most significant accomplishment was, however, just around the corner. The final part of a tetralogy, Diluvium (2018), fiercely pursued OBSCURA's multi-album transformation into musical innovators and metal powerhouses. Music videos for the title track, Emergent Evolution and Mortification of the Vulgar Sun, in concert with a substantial interest in virtuosic, forward-thinking metal, posited OBSCURA in the good graces (yet again) of the worldwide press in addition to rocketing up, for the very first time, the official album charts in Germany. The Germans also topped out at #3 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart with Diluvium.A turning point in the career of the Germans manifested with the first release for the biggest independent metal label on the planet, Nuclear Blast Records. A Valediction granted the band worldwide success, topping their previous albums in a heartbeat, and saw the band climbing higher chart positions worldwide. With epic opening track Forsaken, technical-through the roof Solaris and the catchy, melodic and yet accessible title track, A Valediction established the group as an outstanding and energetic live act, to be proved by their first tour to cover South- and Central America, aside from touring relentlessly throughout Europe, North America and Asia. With the February 7 release date of A Sonication looming, HEAVY sat down with Steffen Kummerer to find out more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Casandra Carson stops by on a tour stop to discuss her latest endeavor, Casandra's Crossing. This is an album that she released on the day the show was recorded with George Lynch. This is a fantastic new album that compliments the work she does with Paralandra very well. Check out the music she has out, catch her on the road, and support musicians by checking out their store with the links below:Listen to Casandra's Crossing: Click HereListen to Paralandra: Click HereCheck out Paralandra on the road: Click HereBuy Paralandra merch: Click HereParalandra Bio:Paralandra hails from Springfield, Missouri, and formed in the summer of 2013 when Casandra Carson and her dad, Paul Carson, began writing songs together to play a one-time event at their local county 4th of July celebration. The response was so positive, and they enjoyed it so much, they decided to continue booking shows and writing songs. They recorded and released a homemade CD titled Rise Up; which sold over 1,000 copies at local shows. Shortly after, friend and local musician, Sawyer Rikard, joined the band on bass guitar in 2015, bringing their stage sound and performance to another level. In March of 2016, they released a follow-up EP, All Fall Down, which debuted #1 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. They soon began touring and being invited to festivals such as Rocklahoma, SXSW, Rockfest, Dirtfest, Loud in Lima, etc.In 2018, they joined forces with Legend Recordings, and released another EP, Ascension, which became their biggest release yet with singles “Back to Life” and “Killer Queen” landing on the radio. Shortly after, they added local powerhouse drummer (and childhood friend of Sawyer), Dakota Watson, to form the rhythm section Casandra, Paul, and Sawyer had always dreamed of. In 2019, they recorded standalone single “Love Will Win” with producer/videographer, Jake Jones, which gained even more radio play, and placed them on numerous national tours; supporting artists such as Tantric, Saliva, Yngwie Malmsteen, Dokken, and being added to the KISS Kruise and NAMM Show. The band continued to write, record, livestream, and perform wherever they could during the 2020 pandemic, and only continued to gain traction and fans from all over the world. Reaching out on a whim, they won over the attention of renowned producer/songwriter, Elvis Baskette, and shortly thereafter, entered the studio to record their first professionally made, full length album, Street Magic, in 2021. This release proved to be a monumental success, skyrocketing their audience with over 5 million views and streams across all platforms. Radio singles from this release alone include “For the Record”, “Despicable”, “Repeat Offender”, “Can't Quench the Fire”, and “Only Human”.Paralandra has since toured the country on multiple headlining runs, and is constantly supporting iconic bands such as Warrant, Lita Ford, Firehouse, Last in Line, and countless others with no end in sight. They reentered the studio with Elvis Baskette in 2023 and recorded their 2nd studio album, which is due April 4, 2024. They plan for this release to be just as big, if not bigger than the last, as they continue to record, write, tour, and work tirelessly to build their brand, and change the direction of rock music to be a force for good in this world.

On today's episode, we chat with Riley Clemmons! Riley Clemmons is a rising artist from Nashville, TN who has accumulated over half a billion global streams and 85 million YouTube video views since the beginning of her almost decade long career. After spending years refining her craft in writers' rooms, Riley sky-rocketed onto the scene with her 2017 Capitol CMG debut single “Broken Prayers”, which has generated over 56 million global streams since its release. Her 2018 self-titled album debut quickly entered the Billboard Heatseekers chart, debuting at No. 13.  Riley released her long awaited third studio album, Church Pew. The 11-track album, co-produced with Jeff Pardo, marks a season a self-discovery for Riley. After experiencing depression and burn out brought on by the pressures of being in the spotlight for so long, Riley spent the better part of a year reflecting and finding what brought her true joy. The resulting body of work follows that journey and demonstrates who she is at her core. Though no stranger to the studio, Church Pew, marks the first time Riley has stepped into the role of Executive Producer. “It feels as though my entire life has been leading up to the creation of this record” shares Riley. “With that said, this album was born from the lowest and toughest point in my life thus far. During an ongoing battle with depression and anxiety and navigating what felt like a true identity crisis, I took a step back from music and creating to live life. I was able to pause long enough to rediscover what I loved and resonated with sonically and lyrically, as I began to allow myself the space to naturally evolve, change, and grow.  rileyclemmons.com @rileyclemmons christianmusicguys.com @christianmusicguys --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/christianmusicguys/message

In 2018, Fox released her sophomore album Salt, an utterly cinematic piece of experimental pop that features dense soundscapes built to accompany Fox's wall-shattering vocals. The sonically-rich record is enhanced via ASMR microphones that were used during the recording, resulting in an ASMR-sensitive body of emotional, political, and personal songs—which, when listened to with headphones—produces a next-level experience for the listener. Salt is the follow-up to Ruby Rose Fox's debut album Domestic which reached number 8 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart.

Interview with We Are Scientists

We had the pleasure of interviewing We Are Scientists Zoom video!American rock band We Are Scientists debuted in the early aughts with the angular post-punk edge of With Love and Squalor, later evolving to incorporate polished synths and expanded atmospherics on efforts like 2016's Helter Seltzer, 2018's Megaplex, and 2021's Huffy. Although modestly popular in America, they were a hit in the U.K., where the group's sound -- part post-punk revival and part indie rock with a touch of '80s synth pop -- drew parallels to contemporaries like Editors, Franz Ferdinand, Interpol, and the Killers. Formed on the West Coast by three California-based college students, We Are Scientists officially took flight after frontman and guitar Keith Murray, bass player Chris Cain, and drummer Michael Tapper (who replaced founding drummer/vocalist Scott Lamb) relocated to Brooklyn and began building a small but devoted following. After releasing three EPs and one independent album -- Safety, Fun, and Learning (In That Order) -- the group signed with Virgin Records and released their major-label debut, With Love and Squalor, in early 2006. The effort peaked at ten on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and eventually was certified gold in the U.K. In 2008, We Are Scientists -- reduced to a duo comprising Cain and Murray after Tapper parted ways with the group -- put out their second full-length album, Brain Thrust Mastery. Produced by Ariel Rechtshaid, the set included the singles "After Hours" and "Chick Lit." As before, the record found popularity in the U.K., where it debuted at number 11 on the albums chart. In late 2012, the band entered the studio in New York with producer Chris Coady (Beach House, Gang Gang Dance, Blonde Redhead) to record sessions for their fourth record. Burrows relocated to the city from England while he worked with Murray and Cain to write and record tracks for the album. Titled TV en Français, it arrived in early 2014 on 100%/Dine Alone Records and featured appearances by Rose Elinor Dougall (Mark Ronson) and Tim Wheeler (Ash). In 2016, We Are Scientists returned with their fifth studio album, Helter Seltzer, produced by Max Hart (of Katy Perry's band). The effort charted in the Top 50 of the U.K. and Scottish charts. Two years later, they delivered their sixth effort, the polished Megaplex, also produced by Hart. The album featured the singles "Heart Is a Weapon," "Not Another Word," and "Your Light Has Changed."Following the 2020 launch of their own Dumpster Dive podcast, the group returned with the full-length Huffy in 2021. Although 2021's Huffy returned to a guitar-driven sound, Lobes, the band's eighth studio album, released early 2023, is their synthiest, electronic beatiest collection yet. So, really, who even is We Are Scientists? Founding We Are Scientists members Keith Murray (guitar) and Chris Cain (bass) have played with guys like Adam, Michael, Andy, Danny, Chris, Matt, and Gary on drums, but for over five years now have had Keith Carne, who looks like he isn't going anywhere. The band's previous singles “After Hours,” “Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt,” “The Great Escape,” “It's a Hit” and “Chick Lit” all have charted in the US/UK and the band have appeared on US late night talk shows, The Late Show with David Letterman, Conan and Carson Daly and performed at Coachella, Sasquatch, and All Points West festivals. In the UK, the band played the Reading and Leeds main stage and Glastonbury Festivals among other world-wide touring. The Israelites in exile wondered how they could sing (Psalm 137:4); in our current dire situation, you may wonder what good it does to write songs. Bryony and Peter talk to a dear A Rocha friend, Sandra McCracken, about how her music has come to be her contribution to the 'renewal of all things' God is working out in and through each of us, whether artists, scientists, activists or peacemakers.Sandra McCracken is a singer-songwriter and hymn writer from Nashville, Tennessee. A prolific recording artist, Sandra has produced 14 solo albums over two decades. Her best selling release, Psalms (2015) received critical acclaim, followed by God's Highway (2017) which made the top 50 on Billboard Heatseekers chart without a major label. Blending the old and new, Sandra has also shown a unique ability to recast sacred scripture texts into theologically rich yet accessible songs. Her thoughtful lyrics and gospel melodies in songs like “We Will Feast In The House Of Zion,” “Steadfast" and “Thy Mercy My God” have become staple anthems in churches across the U.S. As a published writer, she contributes a regular column in Christianity Today and released her first book "Send Out Your Light" in September 2021.

I am a huge fan of her voice, artistry, piano playing, songwriting, vision, production skills and work with nervous system health for artists. Chicago/Boston based artist Ruby Rose Fox is a cultural messenger of our turbulent modern times. Her music is sonically compelling and is  packed with lyrics that reflect and challenge our current political state, from #metoo, to the mass-shooting crisis. Part actress, director, and writer, Ruby has never shied away from inventive ways to approach her art. In 2016 Ruby released her first album Domestic which reached number 8 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. In 2018, she released her second album Salt, an utterly cinematic piece of experimental pop that features dense soundscapes built to accompany her wall-shattering vocals. The sonically-rich record is enhanced via ASMR microphones that were used during the recording, resulting in an ASMR-sensitive body of emotional, political, and personal songs. Ruby's songs have been featured in the video game Rock Band and at the Museum of Science in their space dome as the soundtrack to their amazing projections. Ruby is currently working on a new release. On her instagram , you can find some early solo performances from her home studio of some of her new songs and let me say they are just as moving and unique as her earlier material. I can't wait for her new album.

Born in 1993 in Colorado's Rocky Mountains, SCI has since released 12 albums and countless live recordings from their relentless tour schedule. 2019 marks their 25th year as a band, with a history packed full of surreal experiences, epic moments, groundbreaking involvement and huge accomplishments. They have been recognized for their commitment to musical creativity and integrity, for their community spirit, philanthropic endeavors, and for their innovative approach to the business of music. When The String Cheese Incident's growth first started gaining momentum over a decade ago, when the Internet was just beginning to take hold and the major-label business model was failing, the band decided to make music on their own terms.Since then, The String Cheese Incident has gone on to carve out a completely different approach to the business of music; they are truly pioneers of a new way of “making a band.” With the Internet as their tool, SCI was among the first artists to disseminate information online, such as tour dates, release information, and other news, to their growing fan base. Rather than doing business on such terms as “the bottom line,” SCI put their music and their fans first, opening companies of their own, including a ticketing company, a merchandise company and a fan travel agency, to best serve their community. The band's record label, SCI Fidelity Records, has always operated under the same ideals. Even early on, SCI Fidelity embraced downloadable music and file sharing, delivering SCI's “On The Road” series, where every show the band plays is made available for download on the Internet. Whether they realized it at the time or not, The String Cheese Incident was inventing grassroots band development. Today, literally hundreds of bands are using some version of this same approach to building a band. The String Cheese Incident's commitment goes well beyond their immediate community, and even beyond the music community as a whole. Early on, the band took a serious interest in giving back to the communities that they visited, and they were among the first performers to encourage “Green” shows and tours. SCI's support has helped give rise to such not-for-profit organizations as Conscious Alliance, Rock the Earth, and HeadCount. All the while, The String Cheese Incident has stayed committed to music as a creative endeavor, not just in their recordings but also in their live performances. The list of SCI's special guests and collaborators is long and diverse. Their annual events such as Horning's Hideout, and holiday shows such as New Year's and Halloween, have helped redefine the concert experience and has garnered the band a reputation as live music vibe innovators. In 2017, The String Cheese Incident released “Believe” on SCI Fidelity Records, making it the second time the band collaborated with producer Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads. Harrison also produced “Song In My Head” for SCI in 2014, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. “Believe” was recorded in the band's newly founded HQ / studio in Boulder, dubbed the “SCI Sound Lab”. Chicago/Boston based artist Ruby Rose Fox is a cultural messenger of our turbulent modern times. Her music is as sonically compelling as it is subversive, packed with lyrics that reflect and challenge our current political state, from #metoo, to the mass-shooting crisis. Part actress, director, and writer, Fox has never shied away from inventive ways to approach her art. In 2018, Fox released her sophomore album Salt, an utterly cinematic piece of experimental pop that features dense soundscapes built to accompany Fox's wall-shattering vocals. The sonically-rich record is enhanced via ASMR microphones that were used during the recording, resulting in an ASMR-sensitive body of emotional, political, and personal songs—which when listened to with headphones—produces a next-level experience for the listener. From Iran to Italy to Canada and finally to London, this performer forged a path uniquely his own, knowing the only failure is not trying. “When someone puts a seed in my head, I'll dive in not knowing how deep it is, but I'll just go for it and just see what happens.” Ramin Karimloo is an Olivier and Tony Award nominee who made his name in the early 2000’s starring in some of the West End's most enduring productions, notably Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables, after becoming the youngest actor ever to play the Phantom in 2007. Ramin later originated the role of Phantom in the 2010 sequel Love Never Dies, and made his Broadway debut in the 2014 revival of Les Misérables as Valjean (earning a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical). Throughout his career he has released two EP’s and two albums as an independent recording artist, including his 2019 album From Now On which landed on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. Ramin now hosts his own podcast called “The Hang” on the Broadway Podcast Network, and in addition to playing the dreamy Dr. Kian Madani in Holby City on the BBC, he can be heard playing the dreamy Stavros in “As The Curtain Rises”, Broadway’s first original podcast soap opera.  Shortly after his birth in Iran during the Iranian Revolution, Ramin’s family escaped the country and found themselves in Italy. After several years in Italy, and relocating to a small town in Ontario, it was a 7th grade field trip to see Phantom of the Opera when things changed for Ramin. He left the theater that day thinking, “I want to make people feel like this…”.  During our conversation, Ramin chronicles his journey from high school, to cruise ships, to London - a journey fueled by his endless pursuit of the goals he set for himself as a teenager. Ramin emphasizes the impact encouragement from others can have on your life, and speaks fondly of the bar owner/father figure who championed his dream of one day playing the Phantom. He also revisits the initial impact of COVID-19 on his creative pursuits, and shares details about his most recent creations - a clothing line, a production company, a podcast, and more.  In this episode, we talk about: His family’s journey from Iran, to Italy, to Canada  Being inspired by Colm Wilkinson   Shadowing Phantom Peter Karie in Toronto when he was 16  Life lessons from Mike Nelson, bar owner/dean of the school of life  The serendipity of meeting his first agent in London  His passion projects, and their challenges Connect with Ramin: Twitter: @raminkarimloo IG: @raminkarimloo & 8xCommunity https://www.raminkarimloo.com/ Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. Singer and songwriter Nina Nesbitt's mixture of pop-inspired melodies, part-acoustic instrumentation, and yearning relationship angst saw her cast as the female counterpart to Ed Sheeran when she was invited to open shows for him as a teen. However, Nesbitt carved out her own identity and had a U.K. hit with "Stay Out" before landing just outside of the Top Ten with her full-length debut, 2014's Peroxide. She has also written songs for artists such as Jessie Ware and Olivia Holt. The Apple Tree EP Though she had originally wanted to be an author, Scotland-born Nesbitt eventually started setting her short stories to the music that she wrote on the piano and, later, acoustic guitar. At 16, she began performing in Edinburgh and established a video channel where she posted a mixture of original songs and covers. In 2011, a chance encounter and on-the-spot performance of her song "Standing on One Leg" for pop sensation Ed Sheeran led to support slots and an on-stage cameo during his nation-wide tour. In the meantime, her version of Example's "Stay Awake" was heard by the U.K. rapper, and he subsequently invited Nesbitt to join him for dates at the end of his U.K. tour. She self-released her first EP, The Apple Tree, in 2012, and it received radio support from BBC Radio 1.Stay Out A record deal with Island/Universal soon followed, as did a series of EPs, including 2013's Stay Out. It spent a week on the Billboard Heatseekers chart, while the title track reached number 21 on the U.K. singles chart. "Stay Out" reappeared on Nesbitt's full-length debut, 2014's Peroxide, which went to number 11 in the U.K. and 40 in Ireland. MC YOGI is a world-renowned yoga teacher, musician, and author on a mission to introduce yoga to large, mainstream audiences. His latest album, RITUAL MYSTICAL (feat East Forest), made history by going #1 on the Electronic charts (Aug 2016). In 2015, his ONLY LOVE IS REAL album debuted #12 Billboard Heatseekers + #24 iTunes Hiphop — featuring guest performances from Matisyahu, Trevor Hall, and Dominic Balli. In September 2017, MC YOGI released his first book SPIRITUAL GRAFFITI: Finding My True Path with HarperOne. He has performed and taught yoga everywhere, from headlining festivals and nightclubs to performing in the Forbidden City in China and even at the White House. When not on the road, MC YOGI and his wife Amanda teach at their home studio, Point Reyes Yoga, in Northern California. MC YOGI made a lasting impact on me being a humble, genuine, wise man who's had experiences that some might not believe to be true, but that is what gave him the portal into yoga and meditation. He has a deep knowledge of hip-hop, yoga, music, and meditation all which he conveys through his music and his spoken word. We talk about if it makes sense to look for a guru/teacher, which spiritual teacher, dead or alive, would make the best MC, and about how he got into blending music and yoga to live out his greatest passions. We also talk about the content of his amazing book, Spiritual Graffiti. I loved this interview and how much it felt like I was just talking to one of my friends about spirituality. MC has a way of connecting with people that is truly unique and helps you to understand why he is reaching millions of people through his music and telling others about his life experiences.  MC YOGI Website Email me!

Hello everyone and welcome to Speaking of the Arts. We’ve taken some time off but we are eager to start rolling out new episodes for you. As such, I couldn’t be happier to have the opportunity to speak with today’s guest. Full disclosure…today’s guest happens to also be one of our esteemed artists with whom we have the privilege of booking: the one and only Kat Edmonson! Here’s why you need to know about Kat. In a relatively short amount of time, Kat’s career has seen her recording and/or performing and sharing the stage with the likes of Lyle Lovett, Chris Isaak, Smokey Robinson, George Benson, and Willie Nelson just to name a few. Kat’s 2015 performance on “CBS This Morning: Saturday” garnered the program’s highest rated viewership since 2006. As a leader, Kat has released three critically acclaimed recordings including Way Down Low and The Big Picture. The Boston Globe described Way Down Low as “one of the greatest vocal albums I’ve ever heard.” The Big Picture debuted at number 1 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. On April 27 of this year (2018), Kat will release her 4th album as a leader titled Old Fashioned Gal. Links: Kat Edmonson website and tour dates Kat on Facebook Kat on Instagram

James - She's A Star Smiths wannabes, James, never really caught on over here in the States, but they did get some MTV time in the 90's when Laid hit number 2 on the Billboard Heatseekers album chart. Their highest US-charting song, Laid, comes from the album of the same name, and it climbed up to number 3 in Modern Rock Tracks and 61 in the Hot 100. But do I flash back to that song in the car when the radio personality is talking about James? Naaaaah. My brain is stuck on the sweet little pop song, She's A Star, with its meowing slide guitar and soaring chorus. Snark away, real James fans, but this is my favorite James song. I am hopelessly addicted to catchy pop tunes by rock bands.
