Join us today for this pivotal conversation around the importance of embracing the awesome and the messy of each and everyone of us -- HUMANS.  What would our workplaces look like if we truly valued humanity over identity, compassion over division, and connection over competition? In this heartfelt episode, we explore the call to bring the essence of humanity back to leadership and corporate culture. Too often, we lose sight of the sacredness in our shared experiences, focusing instead on metrics, labels, and policies that divide us. But what if we shifted the narrative? This episode is a rallying cry for leaders and organizations to reclaim the energy of grace, patience, and love in their daily practices. Together, we'll unpack how to create cultures that foster belonging and unity, allowing our teams and organizations to thrive not through division, but through connection and shared purpose. Key Topics:The power of recognizing the inherent value in others. How to shift from judgment to compassion in corporate culture.Practical ways to lead with love, hope, and authenticity. Why belonging and unity are the foundation of sustainable success. Hey folks, welcome to the latest episode of the Ecosystem Member podcast. We're now into our second episode of season two exploring our relationship with nature and the more-than-human world through the medium of the arts. Our guests for this episode is the Norweigan-Finnish duo behind the project ‘Eyes as Big as Plates'. If you haven't seen their work before, Karoline and Riitta collaborate with a person - they started out focusing on elders but now engage people who have something to say about the climate crisis or are engaged in it in some way - and really a place to create an image. The human is fitted with a wearable sculpture featuring organic materials such as sticks or shells or fungi that match the setting so that the composition integrates the person into a place they have a connection to. They've created more than 150 of these images - and released two books of the images - since the project started in 2011. In the episode, we talk about how the project was initially influenced by Nordic folklore, working with serendipity as a project manager, how the word ‘nature' in and of itself can create artificial separations and a new school program the duo is working on with students in Eastern Finland to create their own Eyes as Big as Plates-style images and display them alongside the duo's work. I am a really big fan of Karoline and Riitta's work and their curiosity about people and the more-than-human world really radiates in our conversation. They consider the project an Adventure Club now combining landscape work, sculpture, photography, storytelling and anthropology as well. It was a real treat to get to chat with them and I hope you enjoy the episode. On the Eyes as Big as Plates website you can see more of their work and - most importantly - buy your own copy of their book ‘Eyes as Big as Plates 2', with the proceeds going to create book number three, which will feature works created with mycologists, biologists, soil scientists and operate singers. As you'll hear in the episode, seeing the final images is great, but getting to read the story along with each piece adds new layers and depth to the image. Since launching HumanSmarts, she has partnered with startup founders and small business owners across the USA, helping them cultivate thriving workplace cultures. Karen shares that HR can be more than just compliance and risk management. She doesn't just preach a human-centred approach to HR and employee experience; she equips entrepreneurs with the practical tools and strategies to implement it. She emphasizes creating a work environment where people feel valued, leading to improved business outcomes. Throughout our conversation, we delve into how traditional HR practices have become dehumanized and discuss the psychological impact this has on employees. Karen highlights that the increasing focus on compliance has drawn individuals to HR who may prioritize rules over relationships, leading to the loss of the authentic human connection that should be at the heart of HR. By focusing on empathy and genuine understanding, organizations can foster a culture that retains and attracts top talent. Karen provides compelling examples of how small organizations can transform employee experience to match their culture and values. We also discuss the vital connection between employee satisfaction and customer experience. Karen passionately advocates for treating employees as internal customers, as their happiness and engagement directly influence the service they provide to clients. By humanizing the workplace, businesses enhance employee experiences and position themselves as employers of choice in a competitive talent landscape. This enlightening discussion with Karen is not just a call to action; it's a wake-up call for all business leaders. It's time to reassess your HR practices and embrace the power of human connection within your organizations. The future of your workplace culture and business outcomes depends on it. It's no secret that employees spend the majority of their life working. A nine to five for five days a week is draining, and it's unrealistic for us to expect employees to shut off their personalities when they feel like a human-machine. That's why it's important to establish a more people-centric strategy to empower workforce members.  Today's guest, Traci Chernoff, is an expert in people, strategy, and innovation. In this episode, she will share a few things about what we can do to help restore humanity in the Human Resource Department. Let's hear some golden nuggets from this professional. --- Listen to the podcast here: Bringing the Human Back in Human Resources with Traci Chernoff Welcome to Action's Antidotes, your antidote to the mindset that keeps you settling for less. Have you ever had a job where you felt less than human, you felt like nothing more than a cog in a machine, and had trouble finding your purpose, or why you're really there?  My guest today, Traci Chernoff, is an HR executive, really involved in a lot of initiatives around the future of work, as well as the host of the podcast, Bringing the Human Back in Human Resources. --- Traci, welcome to the program.   Thank you. Thank you so much for having me.    Definitely. The first thing I want to ask you -- given that I suspect that a lot of my listeners have had this experience, or maybe even currently having this experience in their place of employment. We're living in a time when a lot of people are reconsidering -- whether you call it the great resignation, the great reshuffle, whatever you want to call it -- their relationship with their work. What does the phrase "bringing the human back in human resources" mean to you?   It's a great question. To me, what's so interesting about this is that the human was already in human resources. It's the reason why it's the title of the department or it's the phrase that we use when it comes to this industry. When it comes to really why I always talk about bringing the human back, it's that we lost our way. For me, the way that I grew up, so to speak, in HR is that it was clear that there were some really, really strong foundations in the industry and in the practice.    My takeaway was that there wasn't really enough of a focus on the people behind the problems or the people behind the solutions. One of the reasons why I started the podcast, Bringing the Human Back to Human Resources, was because I wanted to make a call to action that we had to take a look at the way that we were operating and the way that we were addressing these problems, and solve for them through a people-centric approach.   I always say that people are at the center of everything that we do. It's the reason why our businesses today -- there's not one business I'm aware of, at least, that can operate without a human being. That's really what it means to me.    Oh man. I'm picturing some weird, dystopian, future movie with a robot business and everything's just robots.   There's still going to have to be someone to help that robot. There's still going to be someone fixing the robot. There's not going to be a robot fixing a robot, because then, who's going to fix that robot?   Yeah, exactly. There was a movie when I was younger. Will Smith was in it. It took place in the year 2030. iRobot. That was about robots building robots.    Yeah, but look, you couldn't have a movie without Will Smith. See? Exactly right.   Or the writers, or any other people. Let's start with a little context about the history of human resources. You talk about the human always being there, but then human resources losing its way at some point. How did that whole process, for people who don't quite know what happened in the 20th century, play out?   Yeah. It's a good question. First of all, my understanding of HR is very modern, because I started my career when it wasn't called personnel.

Today's episode is with Varun Mehta, the CEO of Factor, a legal managed services company recently spun out of Axiom, the massive alternative legal services provider. Varun's story is fascinating. He approaches the legal industry from the perspective of an engineer out to solve problems in a cross-disciplinary way, totally free from the traditional, and frequently ineffective, old ways of performing legal services for clients. Varun starts by telling the story of a formative experience earlier in his career where he was able to assemble a team of subject matter experts and data scientists and beat a Global 100 firm in a race to find highly relevant documents relating to a key financial investigation. If his team could out-compete teams of expensive attorneys at finding needles in data haystacks, how else could a cross-functional team raise the bar for legal service? Varun also talks about discovering his personal strengths, inspiration through Stoic philosophy, his idea of professional compound interest, and how he finally made it to the helm of one of the most interesting companies in the legal industry. Keep an eye on companies like Factor. As the legal industry approaches client service in new and creative ways over the next decade, Factor is likely to carve out a niche as a key player in the space, in an effort to, as Varun says, bring the human back to legal. As always, if you like our discussion, please rate us on Apple podcasts. We hope you enjoy the conversation.

We regret the things we wish we had done much more than things we did that didn't work out.” (17:09) “The way I sort of define success is the ability for a person to spend their time the way they want to. If you are spending your time the way you want to, that's success.” (22:42) “To be a good leader, you have to have as many of these five characteristics. And inspire people, especially when times are tough.” (28:45) “When a client believes that you are backing up your people, they believe that you run a great team.” (37:38) “The way you form a habit is either you start or stop doing something for sixty days.” (44:34)   Links Mentioned: Dino's Email https://www.instagram.com/al4edp/ (Dino's Instagram) https://twitter.com/al4edp (Dino's Twitter) https://authenticleadershipforeverydaypeople.com/ (Authentic Leadership for Everyday People Website) https://www.facebook.com/al4ep/?ref=page_internal (Authentic Leadership for Everyday People Facebook) https://www.linkedin.com/in/rishadtobaccowala/ (Rishad's LinkedIn)  https://rishadtobaccowala.com/ (Rishad's Website)  https://rishad.substack.com (Rishad's Newsletter) https://www.amazon.com/Restoring-Soul-Business-Staying-Human/dp/B07Q4841D8/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=rishad+tobaccowala&qid=1618878263&s=audible&sr=1-1 (Rishad's Book)  https://www.last.fm/music/Susan+Cattaneo/Haunted+Heart/Abide (‘Abide' by Susan Cattaneo)  This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy
