Today's guest is https://www.instagram.com/mike.thomas1/ (Mike Thomas) Mike Thomas a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, where he was a 7x All-American swimmer and a member of Cal Berkeley's 2019 NCAA National Championship Swim Team when the Cal Bears defeated the University of Texas Longhorns. Growing up, Mike attended Hatboro Horsham High School outside of Philadelphia, where he broke the National 100m Backstroke record during his junior year and was one of the top swim recruits in the nation coming out of high school. After an impressive 4 year swim career at Cal Berkeley, where he also competed at the Olympic trials, Mike Thomas traded diving into the swimming pool for jumping into wild fires. Mike began training to become a wildland firefighter for Cal Fire. And soon found himself on the front lines battling some of the largest wildfires in California State history. Mike and I discuss what it's like to be on the front lines of historic wildfires, his training to become a Swiftwater and flood rescue technician and his current job of paramedic. Mike and I also get into what he calls the toughest challenge he ever faced, the untimely death of his dad who was diagnosed and battled with leukemia during his junior year at Berkeley. Man, that's got to be really hard. Mike and I also discuss the importance of establishing a nighttime routine that sets your next day up for success, the book that most influenced his life and why hard work and humility are the trademarks of a champion. At 24 years old, Mike is the youngest guest we've had on the podcast and one of the most impressive. You can't help but be impressed and motivated after you speak with him. It's remarkable how he tackles the obstacles life throws at him and the tenacity and focus he attacks the goals he places in front of him. Thank you for listening. I'm extremely excited about this episode of The Kayak Nerds! Alan Cammack and I interview our good friend Tommy Gram. Tommy played a large part in my growth as a paddler, from teaching my Swiftwater class and kayak instructor course this last year to introducing me to the sport way back in 2016! Check out this episode for some serious but not so serious talk on river accidents, safety, and review. Tommy teaches both whitewater kayaking and backcountry skiing courses. I find his vast experiences fascinating and excellent to learn from. He co-owns Buena Vista Mountain Adventures and has a whitewater kayaking business called Whitewater Attainment.

In the Seasonal lifestyle, the ultimate goal is to get paid to do what you love in incredible locations. During this episode, I ask Dave to describe the best day possible on the mountain and he crafts this snowy paradise in which he's...working. I knew I had come to the right person. Dave is a backcountry ski guide, instructor, and educator, he holds similar roles in whitewater and swiftwater, he guides climbing, mountain bike, and hiking. As he says, 'everything but fishing'. In this episode, we talk about how to know when exactly you're ski mountaineering, hanging up his stick in lacrosse to pursue the outdoors, and which sport he is deathly afraid of right now(but on course to conquering).

DTFF: The Volunteer Firefighter Podcast - Down To Fight Fire
We talk about our most recent big scenario where we staged an MVI with 4 live actors. We also get into some of our Swiftwater training as well as our new Tender WHO WE ARE As a group of Rural Volunteer Firefighters, our Fire Department has built our firefighter training from both old and new tactics in the fire service and adapted them to fit the realities of equipment, manpower, and costs around what our community requires. WHAT WE DO We create video, audio and written word content to share these training and tactics methods with our Brothers and Sisters in our extended fire families, and to showcase to those that may be interested in becoming firefighters the fun you can have and the amazing skills and abilities you get to learn, whilst keeping the lives of the people around you safe! WHY WE SHARE Firefighters are problem solvers whose role requires them to be on their best day whilst others are having their worst day, and while we do not claim to be perfect we are willing to put our lives on the line to try. It's during the trying that we continue to develop the mindset, tactics, and training that allow us to be effective, safe and successful where it's needed the most, and by sharing our experiences we hope that it may help other Fire Departments in creating what works for them to help bring everyone home safe. Swiftwater rescues are among the most dangerous that you will face. That may sound obvious, but some departments that haven't seen many swiftwater incidents have been taken by surprise. Out west, we have unique situations where dry riverbeds or washes accumulate trash and broken branches for months before they turn into raging rivers during the wet seasons. But no matter where you work, there are some principles of water rescue that simply should not be ignored or downplayed. Here to talk about them is Kevin Keith.Kevin is a Captain and Paramedic at Prescott Arizona Fire. He's been on the job for nearly 20 years. He's a swiftwater rescue expert as well as a technical rescue technician. Support this podcast
Swiftwater was one of the interesting characters in history. He earned a fortune by mining in the Klondike, blew it all, and ended up murdered in Peru. All the way, he married several women, including two sisters and courted a third. It seems women would forever be his undoing.

In this episode, two Jackson Hole boaters recall an epic spring when big water lured them to the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho. With the traditional boat launch closed, they put in at Marsh Creek, a tributary running fast, cold and choked with woody debris.
