From the age of ten, Steve immersed himself in classical percussion, marching drumlines, pit orchestras and big band jazz ensembles. He then made the commitment to study with world-renown jazz drummer Danny Gottlieb at the University of North Florida. As well as the drummers of Count Basie and gravitated towards small group drummers such as Shelly Manne, Philly Joe Jones, Jimmy Cobb, Ben Riley and Ed Thigpen. During his time in Jacksonville, Steve met Ulysses Owens Jr. a native Floridian and NYC based jazz drummer. He also played in Suzi's band for a performance and interview on Kids Place Live at the Sirius XM Radio Studios in Washington, DC. Steve has been the drummer for Broadway's Lesli Margherita since 2013 and appears on her record Rule Your Kingdom: Live at 54 Below (Broadway Records), All Hail The Queen (Feinstein's 54 Below) and Broad (Birdland Jazz Club).  He also plays drums for Wicked Divas, a cabaret show featuring current and former actors from Wicked. He has played the Off-Broadway shows Under The Bodhi Tree (Royal Family Theater) and About Love (Sheen Center). This episode is a re-release of our previous episode E051. On Friday, June 30, 2023, our beloved friend Dr. Rick Miller passed away.  Rick had been ill for a couple of years and it appeared he was making a comeback; it was delightful for many of us to see him at the Rocky Mountain Psychological Association meeting in Albuquerque, NM in April 2023.  Rick was a leader among leaders.  He served as chair of the psychology departments at the University of Nebraska-Kearney and Texas A & M University – Kingsville. He served as President of the Society for the Teaching of Psychology and the Rocky Mountain Psychological Association – and these leadership examples merely scratch the surface of his contributions. He was a prolific researcher and an award-winning teacher on a national level on multiple occasions. We will dearly miss Rick. Our condolences go out to Jeanne and to everyone in Rick's family – and that includes his colleagues and his teaching of psychology friends worldwide. Please enjoy this interview from PsychSessions with Rick at his best, originally recorded October 2018 and released January 2019.

Doing things that don't scale. OMX Analytics Being comfortable with being uncomfortable. Ricardo's Bio Ricardo grew up in a small town called Freer in South Texas, practically raised himself, barely graduated high school in 2004, and ultimately joined the Army in 2006. He served as an infantryman in a brand- new unit on Fort Lewis here in Washington, the Brigade 2nd Infantry Division, and was one of the first privates in the brigade. The unit deployed in 2009 as the first Stryker brigade to Afghanistan, and upon return, the unit deactivated. Ricardo voluntarily withdrew from a medical discharge and ETS'd in October 2010. Using his GI Bill benefits, Ricardo graduated from Texas A&M University Kingsville in 2016 with his degrees in chemical engineering and chemistry and moved back here to Washington State not long after graduating. From there, things in his life took a twist, and now, he's a recent graduate of The University of Washington's Master of Science in Entrepreneurship program offered by Foster Business School. Number one, you have to get uncomfortable. That was one thing that army taught me. The army makes you uncomfortable in many different ways and you grow as a result of it. You grow as a person, you grow as a soldier. You grow as a leader, get uncomfortable. It's going to help you grow and get to school. Whether you can afford to pay for classes and actually get a degree. If you can't, there are a billion YouTube videos from Ivy League schools about business and everything you could ever want to learn. I highly recommend when Coronavirus is all over, go to your actual local universities and go to their business departments and just start talking to people.

Self-efficacy is one of the most important concepts in the world of performance psychology. Most of us understand this idea as "confidence" but it's actually more specific than that. It means: "Self-efficacy refers to an individual's belief in his or her capacity to execute behaviors necessary to produce specific performance attainments." Now you might have a lot of questions: How can we better prioritize our mental fitness so that we believe in our abilities? What are the sources of self-efficacy so we can draw from them during training? How can we use mantras for running to our advantage? Are there strategies for building confidence training (or self-efficacy training) into our running? To help us answer these critical questions, I invited Dr. Amber Shipherd onto the podcast. Dr. Amber Shipherd is an assistant professor and performance psychology program coordinator at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. She's also a certified mental performance consultant and owner of Next Level Mind Consulting. She is a member of the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee Sports Psychology Registry and an Executive Committee Member with the Association for Applied Sport Psychology. And thankfully for us, she's an expert on self-efficacy! She joins us on the Strength Running Podcast to discuss the intricacies of confidence: Why confidence is not nearly as valuable as self-efficacy Strategies for building self-efficacy while running Mindset traps that sap confidence and leave you doubting yourself Best practices for incorporating imagery and personal affirmations in your running Links & Resources from the Show: Follow Amber on Twitter Visit Amber's website How to thrive during adversity My favorite mantras

In this episode we discuss the Altex rabbit. When I first encountered this breed, I guessed that it had been developed in Texas, based on the name, but in fact, this was only partially correct.   The Altex Rabbit is currently an unrecognised breed in the United States.  Although this is a relativly new breed, and a commercial breed, many of the commercial breeds are still recognized breeds.  Again, the Altex Rabbit is a relatively new breed, produced for meat and not recognised as a show rabbit. The name comes from Al from Alabama and tex from Texas, and pronounced "all-tex". Much of the information I have about this breed is from a paper written by Steven D. Lukefahr, Professor in the Department of Animal & Wildlife Sciences at Texas A&M University-Kingsville 78363 The History of the Altex Rabbit. Discuss the charactoristics of the ALtex Body The Altex rabbit has a very sweet personality, is not aggressive in any way and is very easy to handle. What is it that makes this breed original? The Altex was created purely as a meat rabbit, as a way to feed poorer communities around the world. The females are called Terminal Sires (mothers that breed babies that don't go on to breed themselves).  Altex terminal cross fryers gain weight faster and go to market sooner.  In less-developed countries, they represent better nutrition for people through enhanced rabbit production.  The litters are sold on for the meat trade. Any offspring should not be used as further breeding stock as this will diminish the gene pool. The NZW or CAL doe consumes less feed than would an Altex dam, produces more milk, and kindles and weans more offspring.     "Terminal" means "end of the line." ALL the offspring should go to market, and none are saved for replacement breeders.     Market day should arrive on average up to one week sooner than is typical for a purebred, or a CALxNZW herd     Replace the buck when needed by acquiring another Altex sire. The Altex breed takes advantage of both hybrid vigor and breed complementation, two factors that can significantly enhance meat rabbit production in the backyard and in a large-scale commercial facility, both in the United States and in less-developed countries where nutrition and daily survival might be constant worries. Why choose an Altex Rabbit? Rapid and efficient weight gain     High dress out percentage     High meat-to-bone ratio The result? Fryers that can be marketed nearly a week sooner. Health All rabbits should be vaccinated against myxomatosis and VHD – both of which are potentially fatal conditions that can be spread by infected animals, bedding, utensils or toys.  They should also be treated regularly for fleas, ticks and worms. Health issues in the Altex rabbit The AlTex rabbit is a generally healthy breed of rabbit.  As with all rabbits, however, check that its bottom is clean of any debris and is kept dry to avoid the danger of flystrike. Teeth and also toe nails should be checked frequently to ensure they are not growing too long. Average lifespan of the Altex rabbit. 7 – 10 years and sometimes more. The Altex was genetically selected for heavy 70 day market weights for over 20 generations Breed Status The Altex is a commercial rabbit and not recognised as a show breed by the British Rabbit Council (BRC) or the American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA). It is emphasized that the Altex is a commercial-bred rabbit. They were not developed for exhibition at rabbit shows. The breed is found only on the North American continent and it can be difficult to locate stock for sale.    But still a breed none the less and it's creation was developed over 20 generations so it's an important one. Have I Missed Anything? If you know something about the breed standard, history or status of this rabbit, please let me know.   Do You Have a Story About This Particular Breed?  What do you love about them? Do you have any tips or tricks up your sleeve for what might make this breed happiest? Perhaps you're a breeder of this type of rabbit. Let us know, and maybe we can set up an interview?
