On the Schmooze Podcast: Leadership | Strategic Networking | Relationship Building
As any author will tell you, the journey of writing, publishing, and marketing your first business book is filled with uncertainties, so you should feel very proud if you've transformed your ideas into a tangible book. Surrounding yourself with fellow writers and authors can make all the difference in reaching your goals. I've created resources to help you find your author community and connect with over 50 Hub Partners ready to assist entrepreneurs in becoming successful authors. Visit www.BizBookPubHub.com to discover these free resources, learn about our virtual networking events, and access archived podcast episodes. We'll explore the importance of connecting with experts who can help navigate the complexities of the publishing process and how to keep up the marketing well past the publication date. All three talented authors participated in one of my Kindle Cross-Promotion Campaigns. Find out about the next campaign at www.BizKindlePromo.com. Let's meet the authors who will share their thoughts about the highs and lows of being a business author. Marcey Rader wrote “Work Well. Play More!: Productive, Clutter-Free, Healthy Living—One Step at a Time,” which offers practical strategies and insights for reducing clutter and enhancing productivity. It empowers readers to create a balanced life filled with joy and fulfillment. Sean Glaze wrote “STAYING COACHABLE: A Story With 4 Questions to Help You Thrive in Change and Enjoy Relentless Improvement,” which offers a thought-provoking framework of questions designed to help individuals foster a growth mindset. Stacey Larsen wrote “Reframing The Leadership Dance: The Secret to Finding Your Rhythm as a People Leader,” exploring innovative leadership approaches. It emphasizes the importance of adaptability and self-discovery in fostering effective leadership practices and navigating complex organizational landscapes. Please join me in welcoming Marcey, Sean, and Stacey. In this episode, we discuss: Audience Over Sales: All our guests emphasize the value of engaging with their audience and creating a profound impact rather than just focusing on book sales alone. Strategic Support: Highlighting the necessity of a strong support system, either through a team or professional help, to ensure high-quality writing and successful book launches. Personalized Writing: Each guest shares insights on tailoring their writing process to their individual needs and the importance of trusting one's instincts throughout the journey. Professional Growth: One guest likens her writing evolution to recording music at top studios, focusing on metrics of impact and her audience's engagement with each subsequent book. He was President of the British Society for Philosophy of Science for 1993-5, President of the Mind Association for 2009-10, and President of the Aristotelian Society for 2013-14. He's also the author of 9 books, including Philosophical Naturalism, Thinking About Consciousness, and Knowing the Score. In this episode, we talk about naturalism, and consciousness and mental phenomena. We start by discussing what naturalism is; if there are problems that science can't deal with; and how philosophy can contribute to science and the scientific method. Then, we move on to talking about consciousness. We first tackle the issues with mind-brain dualism, and then we discuss consciousness and action, and the Libet experiments in the 1980's; we also deal with the hard problem of consciousness, and the issues with emergentism. Finally, we debate the possibility of mental phenomena being nothing more than illusions, and what is real in how we experience the world, with a focus on our perceptual systems. He is a professor of biology at the University of New Mexico, and was president of the Human Behavior and Evolution Society from 2011 to 2013. He is known for his evolutionary explanation of rape as well as his work on insect mating systems and the parasite-stress theory. He's the author of several books, including A Natural History of Rape, and The Parasite-Stress Theory of Values and Sociality. In this episode, we focus on the main topics of Dr. Thornhill's book, The Parasite-Stress Theory of Values and Sociality (https://tinyurl.com/ybuant6k). We explore the evolutionary bases of the behavioral immune system, and the strategies humans and other animals evolved, in terms of sociality, to avoid getting in contact with sources of infection and contamination. In the case of humans, these strategies involve politics, culture, society, personality, and other aspects. We also refer to the biological bases of culture; the emotions of disgust and fear; the cultural differences between the southern and the northern United States; religious content to do with purity and pathogen avoidance; how parasite-stress might have affected the development of the Inquisition, the Enlightenment, and the 60's Cultural Revolution; and also how it is a factor that contributes to speciation. His scientific research focuses on the brain basis of awareness. He has proposed the "attention schema" theory, an explanation of how, and for what adaptive advantage, brains attribute the property of awareness to themselves. His previous work focused on how the cerebral cortex monitors the space around the body and controls movement within that space. Notably he has suggested that the classical map of the body in motor cortex, the homunculus, is not correct and is better described as a map of complex actions that make up the behavioral repertoire. He's also the author of 13 books, including Consciousness and the Social Brain (2013), and The Spaces Between Us: A Story of Neuroscience, Evolution, and Human Nature (2018). In this episode, we focus our conversation on the topic of consciousness. Basically, what is consciousness, from a scientific perspective, and its relationship to other cognitive components of our brains. Also, the interplay between attention, awareness, and consciousness. IT MUST HAVE BEEN SOME SORT OF RECORDING ISSUE. THANK YOU FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING. Dr. Frederick Crews is an American essayist and literary critic, and Professor Emeritus of English at the University of California, Berkeley. Also, a prominent participant in the "Freud wars" of the 1980s and 1990s, a debate over the reputation, scholarship and impact on the 20th century of the founder of psychoanalysis, Freud. He's the author of many books, including the ones that are relevant to our conversation today, The Memory Wars: Freud's Legacy in Dispute, and Freud: The Making of an Illusion. In this episode, we talk about how and why Dr. Crews decided to turn against Freud's psychological theories, and his role against the Recovered Memory Therapy movement in the 80's and 90's, and the idea of repressed memories. We then move on to talk about Freud's personality, and what led them to adopt a pseudoscientific academic approach. We cover some of his medical work and his main theories, like hysteria, the Oedipus Complex, dream analysis, and his organization of the unconscious. Finally, we discuss psychoanalysis in general, and if it today something resembling a science at least. She is an evolutionary psychologist/anthropologist who specializes in symbolic and aesthetic behavior, with an emphasis on storytelling, art, and play. Her work investigates the origins of these behaviors—specifically, the selection pressures that led to their emergence, the role they played in ancestral human societies, and the design features of the mind that make them possible. She publishes in both scientific and humanities journals, and blogs for the Huffington Post, where she explores modern issues, trends, and behaviors in light of human evolutionary history. In this episode, we talk about storytelling and folklore from an evolutionary perspective. We start off by talking about the social role and the evolutionary bases of storytelling. We then look into some of the similarities in themes and characters across cultures. We discuss if storytelling might play a role in the development of theory of mind in children. We also talk about the role of play in children's development. And we end up talking about some of the similarities between oral storytelling and fictional literature, and the fact that storytelling still plays a big role in modern societies.
