Tung-Yen CHOU's In the Mist is a 360 video that premiered at Venice during the pandemic in 2021. The synopsis of the piece is “In a dim-lighted room filled with mist, blurred figures of men are sipping the desire and loneliness from each other. You seem to have entered a forbidden zone and fallen into a state between dreaming and being awake, gazing at someone and also being gazed at by them. Theatre and new media director Chou Tung-Yen once again touches on the unspeakable life experience of the gay community culture, exploring a male sauna through poetic lenses to take a peek into something that's hidden under the desire—the love without love.” I had a chance to speak with Yen remotely in 2021 about his piece that actually kicked off what ended up being a trilogy series followed by a mixed reality performance called Gazing, in the Mist, and then Traversing the Mist which premiered at IDFA DocLab 2023 and is featured in the next episode. In the Mist faced some censorship from distribution platforms of Viveport and Oculus as it featured male nudity and adult themes, which made it difficult to watch alongside the other pieces that were showing during the virtual exhibition of Venice VR Expanded in 2021. We talk about the challenges of distribution, but also the process and journey of creating what ended up being the first chapter of a longer journey and poetic trilogy exploring the gay sauna culture in Taiwan. This is a listener-supported podcast through the Voices of VR Patreon. Music: Fatality

This is the 26th & last episode of my Venice Immersive 2022 coverage, and I wanted to end with this discussion amongst film and immersive critics about the various challenges for reviewing and critiquing immersive art and entertainment. This is a continuation of two previous conversations that I also participated in during Venice Immersive 2019 (I hope to air the recordings of those here soon), and the major conclusion back then was that the challenges of the limited distribution of immersive stories makes it difficult to cultivate a broader audience for reviews and critiques. Fast forward to 2022, and many of these distribution challenges by and large still exist, although it is slightly better given more immersive stories showing up on the Meta platform and Viveport has the most robust selection of immersive stories, even though Steam still is largely games only. But the challenge for immersive festivals is that they're still having many challenges trying to attract the mainstream film critics to pay more attention to the selection of immersive stories. It's under this context that there was another gathering of mostly film critics who occasionally write about immersive work and myself who is solely dedicated to covering immersive stories, immersive art, and immersive entertainment. Fredrik chats with Tommy Maloteaux about his VR god game Deisim and all the interesting stuff which has happened in and around the game since episode 406 where Tommy first was a guest on the podcast. We start with some background on Tommy and how he got into game development from a start as a web developer. Then Tommy tells us how he got started creating the game. Tommy likes to start small and iterate, and he chose to start with the AI. We also discuss how the word AI can sound a lot more intimidating than when you actually need to build for your game. Deisim is available on multiple platforms, and since we last spoke it has become available through Oculus App lab, and thus much easier to play on Oculus quest. Tommy tells us about how App lab works, and how it has changed things for Deisim (and saved Oculus a lot of developer accounts). The other major event for Deisim since last time is that the game sells enough that it has allowed Tommy to make the game his full time job. Tommy talks about how going full time has changed how he works on the game, like both having more time, and also given him a chance to find a nice work-life balance. Also: how temperature can affect what gets worked on for the game. We discuss what hardware Tommy uses to develop the game, and interesting differences between running on desktop versus mobile hardware. On the Quest, the game is GPU bound, on the PC it’s CPU bound. A 2D mode for the game is in development, and Tommy talks about that version and what changes he needed to make to get the game running in 2D on a PC with a mouse. A well-factored code base and build pipeline helped a lot. Last but not least, Tommy discusses the power of having core values for your project, which the core values for Deisim are, and letting them guide what gets put in or not. We learn more through experience. And we experience more through VR. In fact, virtual reality solves for many of the limitations of in-person learning, allowing students to practice new skills through simulation. What if the future of education is VR?Tom Impallomeni is the Cofounder and CEO of TribeXR, a startup that leverages VR to teach creative skills, with the ultimate goal of turning aspiring musicians into professionals and performers. Tom has an extensive background in building companies, and his resume includes tech startups like Virtually Live, SuperAwesome and Where Are You Now. Tom also serves as an advisor to the teams at Aflete, FireTech Camp and Pyramid. Today, Tom joins us to explain why TribeXR decided to start with DJing and what makes learning that particular skill easier in VR than it is in real life. He describes his experiences as the founder of an early VR company, discussing what metrics his team uses to measure success and how they think about acquiring new customers. Viveport's subscription service Viveport Infinity can now be accessed by Valve Index owners, a rollout that comes just months after the Index's original release this June. It's not an entirely unexpected move, especially since Valve and HTC have previously worked together on VR projects, and the Index itself is compatible with some physical HTC Vive gear already. The service grants subscribers access to a library of VR games, as well as occasional discounts on other Viveport purchases. It's an unlimited-access spin on HTC's earlier Viveport subscription service that launched earlier this year, and one that follows in the footsteps of programs like Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass and EA's Origin Access. In a press release, Viveport president Rikard Steiber notes that the move is one more step toward the company's goal of making Viveport a hardware-agnostic platform. So far, Viveport Infinity supports HTC's own HTC Vive headset, the Oculus Rift, Windows Mixed Reality, and Valve Index. #gaminglife #like #apexlegends #gamingmemes #anime #nintendoswitch #fortnitememes #pcgamer #retrogaming #gameplay #battleroyale #pro #destiny #art #bhfyp #blackops #fortniteclips #callofduty #twitchstreamer #geek #youtuber #lol #rdr #gamingcommunity #minecraft #overwatch #sony #fun #instagram #online --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pixel-sultan/support

Richtig: Man bietet ihnen Geld. Wem bringt es was? This week Kyle and Matthew sit down with Harry Potter fanatics Laura Knight and Klee Wiggins to talk about their love for the movie Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them. They feel like this 1920s take on the Harry Potter universe got a bad rap. They like the series and how it has reinvigorated the franchise and kept them from Harry Potter withdrawals. They discuss their favorite fantastic beasts, Dumbledore's middle names, what's the deal with Grindelwald, magical racism vs. just regular racism, how the current political climate has affected their re-reading of the books, and what was really going on with Moaning Myrtle. Plus, they debate Snape, and Kyle still hates all the camping in the 7th book. This episode is sponsored by Loot Crate. Give yourself a geeky gift this month! "My Brother's Keeper"--a nine-minute virtual reality film that tells the story of two brothers, fighting on opposite sides of the Civil War, who reunite at Antietam, the bloodiest battle in US history--will debut at the Sundance Film Festival today (January 20th).
