This week we are discussing what the interweb calls the New Wave Of Classic Rock! There have been bands doing the retro-rock thing for years, but this phenomenon seems to be gaining momentum lately and we decided to focus on new-ish bands that have released albums in the last year or so. Indeed, rock n' roll is not dead and is in the very capable hands of these killer new classics! What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection: an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. The younger generation is picking up guitars and playing that classic blues-inspired hard rock again! This retro rock thing is not quite as new as the interweb is making it out to be, but who cares? Facing that trouble head on permeates their work. Rough-hewn, expansive American rock & roll with dirt under its nails and whiskey on its breath, the music of The Silent Comedy channels the iron spine of the blues, Honky-Tonk sweat, and punk swagger into a euphoric declaration that when trouble rears its worrisome head it's time to crack knuckles, lock arms, and lift our voices high.  The brothers spent their formative years traveling the world with missionary parents before settling in California. In search of catharsis, the teens found solace in songwriting and stage lights. The young band proved capable of raucous shows and word spread. Years of touring followed, performing with Dave Matthews Band, Queens of the Stone Age, Mumford and Sons, Arctic Monkeys, and Vampire Weekend, and festival plays at Bonnaroo, Wakarusa, Under The Big Sky, Summer Meltdown and more.  https://www.thesilentcomedy.com/home   AMERICAN RESTLESS: Hard-scrabble, the music of American Restless channels the force of post-hardcore, the feral-energy of riff-heavy garage rock, and the swagger of  rockabilly, earning the trio subgenre monikers like Spaghetti-Midwestern and Psych-A-Billy, but the group would simply describe their sounds as Rust Belt Rock and Roll. Originally from Racine, WI, the band's hometown is best known for its industrial legacy and stiff blue-collars. But it's proximity to Milwaukee and Chicago made it rife with blues, metal, and DIY punk music, all of which shape the sonic DNA of the band. The Wildwoods' delicate melodies and descriptive lyrics come from nature, love, experiences from the road, and growing up in Nebraska. The band released their debut album, Sweet Nostalgia, followed by a duo EP, Birdie & Goose, in 2017 and quickly established themselves as a creative, harmonious, and instrumental force in their local music scene. Since then, The Wildwoods have released another full-length record, Across A Midwest Sky (2019), as well as a handful of singles, Little Home (2020) and Like My Old Man (2021), and have supported touring acts such as Elephant Revival, Arts Fishing Club, The Accidentals, The Way Down Wanderers, and Jamie Wyatt.Along with performing several Sofar concerts in cities such as London, Brooklyn, and St. Louis, as well as a European tour in 2019, the group has performed at several festivals, including Summerfest, The Nebraska Folk and Roots Festival, Wakarusa, and the Flatwater Music Festival. In 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2021 The Wildwoods were nominated by the Omaha Arts and Entertainment Awards as a top Americana/Folk artist in Nebraska, and in 2022 they were named “Best Band” by the Lincoln Journal Star's ‘Lincoln's Choice Awards.' Joe Strobl joined Badass Records Podcast for episode #16, and I'm not sure what we didn't cover: being engaged, smoking briskets, Anthony Bourdain, pro wrestling, Wakarusa, high school, family, Chiefs season tickets, collecting vinyl, Bruce Springsteen, Swedish visas (or the lack thereof). You know. The typical Tuesday-evening fodder.Joe chose My Morning Jacket's Z, The '59 Sound by Gaslight Anthem, and everybody's favorite Wilco record, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, as his initial dabbles into records of badassery.Early in our conversation I called Joe, "something of a unicorn," and later supposed that perhaps he was striped. He said it was a testament to his family going through stuff together and having that bring them close together. That sentiment hasn't left me since and I don't imagine it ever will.I barely know Joe. He's a friend of my youngest younger sister and we've only really seen each other at gatherings for a number of years. He's always been a sweetheart in my mind, though, and the kind of human he has always struck me as being now resonates as certain truth, and I can't help but tie that to his upbringing. It in fact makes me hopeful that I am perhaps a little ways down the path to raising quality people that will always have a good relationship with their family and always be kind to those that they meet while out in the world.Joe owed me nothing, but he gave of his time, nonetheless. He took from the busy vault that is his soon-to-be-married life, and drove to my house to talk music for the better part of three hours, and for that I am grateful. When I really decided to roll with this project, I had an undecipherable feeling pushing me forward and I think that that feeling was this notion that talking to one another face to face about our lives and the twists and turns in them carries with it a good bit of worldly medicine. And I think a good bit of worldly medicine has felt something along the lines of necessary for the past 26 months, if not the last six years. So, that's the unconscious impetus here, I guess; the ingredients and the steps for doing a cool thing exist, and if it's potentially mutually beneficial, why not do it.Someone told me a couple of months ago that this project is "a brilliant idea and the world needs more music love and such if it's ever going to heal and thrive, again. I know you can make this something truly great and you are well on your way."I don't know how much of that is true, but I hope all of it is. I love that sentiment and love the person that delivered it.I also love Joe Strobl for hanging out with me and being a part of whatever mix this is."Thanks for stopping by. And, please: Enjoy yourself."copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the intro/outro audio. They are samples from Kurt Vile's "Wedding Budz" off of his It's a Big World Out There (And I Am Scared) EP from 2013, c/o Matador Records. On this episode of The Recovering Catholic, Katie welcomes singer-songwriter Ruston Kelly.Ruston Kelly is an American singer-songwriter based in Nashville, TN. Kelly writes and performs the kinds of songs that inspire novels and movies. You could call him a bastard disciple of Kurt Cobain and Townes Van Zandt, and he'd be totally cool with that. He's just as comfortable wearing a cowboy hat as he is in a Slayer t-shirt. His story so far twists and turns through heartbreak and triumph, an overdose and rehab, empty dive bars and packed venues, living everywhere from South Carolina to Brussels. It's this unbelievable experience that informs his singular style—a gravelly patchwork of folk lyricism, grunge attitude, country heart, Americana spirit, and rock energy. Not only has he penned songs for Tim McGraw (“Nashville Without You”), Josh Abbott Band (“Front Row Seat”), and more, but his independent solo debut EP Halloween earned acclaim from KCRW, Consequence of Sound, RELIX, Apple Music, and more. “Poison” racked up over 516K Spotify streams, while “Black Magic” soundtracked the Season Finale of the CBS series Scorpion. He logged countless miles on the road sharing the stage with the likes of The Lumineers and Robert Earl Keen in addition to performing at Bonnaroo and Wakarusa. His latest release, Shape & Destroy, is available here. The Recovering Catholic is Produced & Hosted by Katie Pruitt; Artwork by: Sami Wideberg (Stolen Trailers Studio); Mixed by: Guy Fell; Edited by: Justin Thomas (Revoice Media); Music by: Katie Pruitt; Additional Music by: Ruston Kelly. Get Familiar with Vincent Antone, the man behind the “All the Pretty Lights” tribute that recently reverberated some much-needed positive vibes in the Pretty Lights Family. Vincent shares which Pretty Lights interviews he sampled in the tribute, his creative process on making music that Makes You Feel, and how a Pretty Lights performance video on YouTube inspired him to get on the waitlist for a monome made by a couple that only builds 200-300 a year. Vincent is a talented musician whose various projects have performed at many major festivals including  Austin City Limits, Wakarusa, and even the last Pretty Lights Episodic Festival in Texas.  Represented by Mammoth Music Group, Vincent ponders what avenues he might take his latest project given his myriad of interests and influences, and hopes to cultivate a fanbase that is open to experimentation.Vincent kept it real and shared some incredibly vulnerable struggles from his past, his ongoing journey for self-improvement, and how these experiences have helped shape his outlook that maybe life is “about experiencing [suffering,] using it, and coming out on top” If you enjoyed the “All the Pretty Lights,” tribute check out his music and keep your eye out in this episode for a sneak peek of a track from his new EP dropping this spring.“I think what [Pretty Lights] did most importantly is he disproved the notion that electronic music couldn’t be human or soulful. "These guys can make music and elevate a scene." - Music City Roots Waker was founded by childhood friends and songwriting duo Chase Bader (Vocals, Acoustic) and Conor Kelly (Electric Guitar). The group hails from Nashville, mashing soul, rock & roll, and jam into an eclectic, danceable sound, focusing on songs that aim for the heart, head... and feet. From the East Coast to the West Coast, each member moved to Nashville to join Bader and Kelly one by one. The band originally began under the name Koa with bassist Ryan Ladd and saxophonist Alex Matthews. Percussionist Ryan McClanahan quickly joined adding a unique sound to the music. Finally, the band found drummer Dave Czuba to fuse Koa into Waker. Two years later, Waker welcomed Bobby Steinfeld to join to the band on keyboards as the 7th member of Waker. The intention has always been clear, to “wake people” with their music. In a short amount of time, the band has already conquered festival stages at Bonnaroo, ACL, Hangout, SXSW, Firefly, and Wakarusa. They’ve toured with Blues Traveler, JJ Grey & Mofro, Moon Taxi, Galactic, the Wailers, recorded a session for Audiotree Live, and headlined shows across the country. Since the release of their 2015 EP, the band has continued their nonstop regiment of touring & writing. Before the summer of 2017, Waker released two singles, "Wake Me Up" & "Pike", both of which will be featured on their debut album due early in 2019. Waker is an experience meant to be shared with others.

Welcome to episode #28 where I am pleased to bring you a band that I wasn't sure I'd ever see on the LMP. When I saw that Cake was in the line-up for this year's Wakarusa festival I hoped there might be a chance that a taper would get their set. Fortunately for me Brian Price was able to pull off a great sounding recording and especially fortunate since I missed out on Wakarusa this year. Cake's catchy guitar riffs, blazing trumpet solos, and off the wall lyrics all make them a great band, but I don't know if they've gotten a lot of live attention. I've seen them a couple times in the past and take if from me if you are fan you will enjoy the show. You can't really argue with the statistics, 9 out of 10 German tourist interviewed agree that their songs rock even though they miss the rising action a little bit. Is it just me or has there been an explosion of new music festivals in recent years? If you don't believe me take journey over to the Live Music Blog and search for the word "festival". The nice thing about all of these new festivals is that no matter where you live you are probably within driving distance to one. Currently I'm making plans with some friends to head over to Wakarusa which will once again be held in Lawrence, KS. The appeals of festivals are many but one big draw is that you get to see a lot of your favorite bands in one trip and also get exposure to new bands that you might not otherwise have seen live. From a live music taping perspective an additional benefit of the festival scene is that the taping policy of the festival will often times trump that of each band or record label. The result is that live recordings of bands that don't usually taped get injected into the taping community. The band I am featuring in this episode is one such example. Despite very few live recordings in circulation, here is Neil Young and Crazy Horse live from Bonnaroo 2003. I almost hate to admit it, but Episode #4 features a band that I have only been listening to fairly recently. The reason I say that is that the John Butler Trio really should have been in my CD player a while ago considering their style matches so close to bands like Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, and G Love and Special Sauce which I am huge fans of.  Another reason that they should have been in my CD player is that they are really damn good.  I was fortune enough to see these guys live at Wakarusa this year and really got to see an excellent performance.  This Australian trio really has a good variety of songs to get your toes tapping.  I especially enjoy their up tempo song Funky Tonight which is, as the name suggests, quite funky.Song listing 1) Daniella 2) Gov' Did Nothing 3) Zebra 4) Good Excuse 5) Better Than 6) Funky Tonight If you enjoyed this podcast click the following link to download the rest of the show John Butler Trio - Lawrence, KS - 06/09/07  Support the artists in this podcast by buying CDs and watching them live!
