#18: Draadkrachtige World Wide Knit in Public Day

Voor de draad ermee

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 9, 2024 61:48

Knit in Public Day is this weekend, and we thought it was fitting to invite Michele Bernstein to join us for this episode of the podcast because she will once again be joining the Knit Picks team for our own Knit in Public Day event! We talk with her about her current design passions, past small knitting events like Knit in Public Day, and bigger events with classes like Vogue Knitting Live. If you're local to the Portland, Oregon area, we hope you'll join us this weekend in Vancouver, Washington for our event. You can find more details on Blog.KnitPicks.com    Plus, Lee, Stacey, and Andi share their progress on the Ice Fire KAL and introduce our latest pattern collection, Soft Stripes & Intersecting Lines.      0:03 Welcome to the Knit Picks Podcast! 00:28 Lee and Stacey are joined by Andi to discuss their Ice Fire KAL projects!  10:41 Lee and Stacey share about our latest pattern collection called Soft Stripes & Intersecting Lines. 20:35 Designer Michele Bernstein joins Lee and Stacey to chat. Stacey and Michele discuss a previous knitting event at a Portland, Oregon cat cafe that Michele hosted. 36:43 The conversation turns to larger events with classes like Vogue Knitting Live and Red Alder.  40:21 Michele has done both virtual and in-person teaching and talks about the differences.  43:44 Michele shares what she has coming up for classes and patterns, and the conversation returns to assigned pooling. 50:20 Credits     Ice Fire Wrap Knit Along https://blog.knitpicks.com/ice-fire-wrap-knit-along/?&utm_source=libsyn&utm_campaign=podcast&utm_content=episode366 Ice Fire Wrap pattern https://www.knitpicks.com/ice-fire-wrap/p/54182D?&utm_source=libsyn&utm_campaign=podcast&utm_content=episode366 Wrap and Turn tutorial https://www.knitpicks.com/learning-center/wrap-and-turn-short-rows?&utm_source=libsyn&utm_campaign=podcast&utm_content=episode366 Soft Stripes & Intersecting Lines ebook https://www.knitpicks.com/soft-stripes-intersecting-lines-ebook/p/75450D?&utm_source=libsyn&utm_campaign=podcast&utm_content=episode366 Glennis Bandana Cowl pattern https://www.knitpicks.com/glennis-bandana-cowl/p/54176D?&utm_source=libsyn&utm_campaign=podcast&utm_content=episode366 Chroma yarns https://www.knitpicks.com/yarn/chroma/c/30015012?&utm_source=libsyn&utm_campaign=podcast&utm_content=episode366 Follow the Lines Cardigan pattern https://www.knitpicks.com/follow-the-lines-cardigan/p/54180D?&utm_source=libsyn&utm_campaign=podcast&utm_content=episode366 Gloire Sweater pattern https://www.knitpicks.com/gloire-sweater/p/54178D?&utm_source=libsyn&utm_campaign=podcast&utm_content=episode366 Woven Socks pattern https://www.knitpicks.com/woven-socks/p/54177D?&utm_source=libsyn&utm_campaign=podcast&utm_content=episode366 Coloring Outside the Lines ebook https://www.knitpicks.com/coloring-outside-the-lines-ebook/p/75448D?&utm_source=libsyn&utm_campaign=podcast&utm_content=episode366 Good Vibes & Groovy Lines ebook https://www.knitpicks.com/good-vibes-groovy-lines-ebook/p/75449D?&utm_source=libsyn&utm_campaign=podcast&utm_content=episode366 Animation yarn https://www.knitpicks.com/yarn/animation-amigurumi-sets/c/5420468?&utm_source=libsyn&utm_campaign=podcast&utm_content=episode366 Michele's website/blog https://pdxknitterati.com/ Michele's patterns on Knit Picks https://www.knitpicks.com/search?q=Michele%20Lee%20Bernstein?&utm_source=libsyn&utm_campaign=podcast&utm_content=episode366 Yarn Over: Brioche Knits ebook https://www.knitpicks.com/yarn-over-brioche-knits-ebook/p/75345D?&utm_source=libsyn&utm_campaign=podcast&utm_content=episode366 Both Sides Now Shawl pattern https://www.knitpicks.com/both-sides-now-shawl/p/52753D?&utm_source=libsyn&utm_campaign=podcast&utm_content=episode366 Brioche Knit Love book patterns https://pdxknitterati.com/brioche-knit-love-book/brioche-knit-love-the-21-designs/ Brioche Knit Love book/ebook on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C5KNG6HG/ Michele's Assigned Pooling patterns (Ravelry link) https://www.ravelry.com/bundles/assigned-and-planned-pooling Lee's assigned pooling dishcloth pattern https://www.knitpicks.com/scrubbing-bobbles-dishcloth/p/56389?&utm_source=libsyn&utm_campaign=podcast&utm_content=episode366 Shine Multi yarn https://www.knitpicks.com/yarn/shine-multi-worsted/c/5420476?&utm_source=libsyn&utm_campaign=podcast&utm_content=episode366 Knit Picks Knit in Public Day event https://blog.knitpicks.com/join-us-for-knit-in-public-day/?&utm_source=libsyn&utm_campaign=podcast&utm_content=episode366 World Wide Knit in Public Day https://www.wwkipday.com/ Purrington's Cat Lounge https://www.purringtonscatlounge.com/ Cat Adoption Team https://catadoptionteam.org/ 9 Lives ebook https://www.knitpicks.com/9-lives-ebook-cat-inspired-knits/p/75290D?&utm_source=libsyn&utm_campaign=podcast&utm_content=episode366 M K Nance's patterns https://www.knitpicks.com/search?q=M%20K%20Nance?&utm_source=libsyn&utm_campaign=podcast&utm_content=episode366 Nautical Knitting Cruise on the Schooner Zodiac (Bellingham, WA) July 31 http://schoonerzodiac.com/cruises/nautical-knitting/ Vogue Knitting Cruise to Alaska in September http://www.toursbyvogueknitting.com/ Virtual Vogue Knitting Live (2 brioche classes) in June https://www.vogueknittinglive.com/portal Petite Brioche and Starfall planned pooling cowl Zoom classes via For Yarn's Sake https://www.foryarnssake.com/classes/ Starfall pattern https://pdxknitterati.com/patterns/patterns-cowls-and-scarves/starfall-cowl/   Sitka Center (Oregon Coast) brioche workshop in July https://www.sitkacenter.org/workshops/3418-introduction-to-brioche-knitting   Sign up for the PDXKnitterati newsletter http://eepurl.com/cniNPX

We can hardly believe that it's almost time for this year's Great London Yarn Crawl tickets to go on sale! On this episode: Great London Yarn Crawl 2018 Update We have fewer routes, only 10 this year, to make things a little easier organizing the GLYC alongside Yarnporium. Sadly, I Knit and Fringe won't be taking part this year but a new shop is opening that will be! Willow & Lark is also on board as our yarn sponsor and we've already had some pretty lush door prizes pour in from Blue Sky Fibers. Routes will be announced on or around June 15th and tickets will go on sale on July 1st as in past years. What We're Working On  Allison has been a sewing and making fiend and has whipped up two Linden sweatshirts while also crocheting a French Market bag in linen. She's also started knitting Praline by Dani Sunshine and also whipped up a Lilly baby sweater on her knitting machine for a friend's new arrival. Rachel hasn't finished her Lilly baby sweater yet as focus has been on wrapping up her Marginalia sweater by Karie Westermann which is now off the needles, blocked and too hot to wear in this weather (of course!). Rach is also working on a new shawl design and searching for a travel project for a work trip to Amsterdam.  Yarn Crawl Season It's summer! Which means less enthusiasm about wool and knitting as it becomes too hot, but our local yarn shops still need our support! Thankfully there are things like Yarn Shop Day, World Wide Knit in Public Day, as well as Yarn Crawls all over the world to help keep us heading to our Local Yarn Stores to be part of the action. We chat about different things we can do to keep showing our support for our LYSs. Wrap Up Many thanks for joining us for another episode! You can find the podcast on iTunes and Stitcher Radio (please rate, review and subscribe!) and you'll find us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, in our Yarn in the City group on Ravelry, or in person on Wednesday nights at our knit night between 7 and 10pm at The Breakfast Club on Battersea Rise. This September 9th is the 5th Anniversary of the Great London Yarn Crawl, once again benefitting Refuge and we have planned to make it extra special for you this year so we really hope you’re going to join us us! This year we’ve got 12 awesome routes for you, each route is named after one of the lines of the London underground. Tickets will be £20, which includes your goody bag (full of gloriousness, including a skein of yarn from one of our yarn sponsers: Erika Knight and The Fibre Co.), entry to the Mini-Marketplace and After Party (with door prizes and other cool stuff).  We will again be collecting items to donate to Knit for Peace, and will be having a raffle for a grand prize basket of goodies! *** Many thanks for joining us for another episode! Rachel is away at the moment so Carmen from A Yarn Story fills in as co-pilot to Allison on this episode.  We realised after we recorded the podcast that we didn't explain very well about being at H+H, the craft trade fair that happened this past March 28-30 in Cologne, Germany. Allison was there on the SweetGeorgia Yarns stand and Carmen was helping out as German translator and answering questions about having the yarns in her shop in the UK. Now that you have that as context, this episode includes chatter about things we saw at the show, along with our usual bits of news and events and what we're working on. News and Events April 23 - Spaces are still available for the upcoming coach trip to Wonderwool from London with the London Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers. Click here for more details and to book your space if you'd like to join us. May 6th - Yarn Shop Day is back! This is great opportunity to show your love for your local yarn shop (LYS). It's also the three year anniversary for A Yarn Story and Wild & Woolly! June 10th - Join us at The Village Haberdashery for our World Wide Knit in Public Day event. We'll have more details for you soon! Make Happy - aka What We're Working On Carmen, who regularly wishes she was an octopus so that she could have more things on the needles is working on a second neckerchief to match the one she made for Allison for their matching dresses that they wore on the SweetGeorgia stand in Cologne. She's also been finding her fade this week and working on the hot shawl of the season. Carmen also has a few things needing sleeves before they can be completed. In addition to sewing a matching Moneta dress for Carmen, Allison has finally finished the sooper secret project and talks about the special Lucca lace pi shawl that she knit in honour of a friend's wedding. She also cast on a new project out of SweetGeorgia yarn so that she could knit on the stand at H+H and is knitting the Foolproof cowl out of deliciously yummy Cashluxe Spark. A Yarn Shop Buyer's Road Trip In this segment we get into a bit of a geeky craft business behind the scenes discussion about various ways that shop owners find yarns and other interesting bits for their shops, as well as some of the trends and things that we think are coming down the pipe for the later seasons this year. Wrap Up Many thanks again to Carmen for co-hosting this episode! You can find the podcast on iTunes and Stitcher Radio and us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, in our Yarn in the City group on Ravelry, or in person on Wednesday nights at our knit night at The Goat on the Rise between 7 and 10pm. On today’s podcast we’re chatting about two new books that we were asked to review at the Edinburgh Yarn Festival. We’ve got a review of Coffee with C.C. (and Dami too!) – more coffee-inspired patterns from C.C. Almon and this time with her daughter Dami as well. And we also take a peek at Knit the Rainbow, a collection of accessories designed for gradient sets by Joy McMillan. Joy of course, is also known as The Knitting Goddess and she really knows colour! News and Events   The Countess Ablaze Dye Studio is now newly reopened in their brand new space in Manchester’s northern quarter. They are now open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm and wow – the space is amazing! Congrats to the Countess and run, don’t walk to see her new space – and a new yarn too! 23 April - the London Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers coach to Wonderwool on Sunday, April 23rd. Tickets are £39 and include round-trip coach and entry to the show. Get your tickets here. Saturday May 6th - Yarn Shop Day Saturday, June 10th - World Wide Knit in Public Day. We’re excited to tell you that we will be co-hosting an event with The Village Haberdashery at their new location in West Hampstead.  Make Happy – aka – What we’re working on (#yitcmakehappy) Rachel is finally past some serious designers block on a new shawl design in Kettle Yarn Co. Beyul DK (in murky chartreuse of course...). She's also made progress on her Kippen Cardigan by Kat Goldin. Allison's Sooper Sekrit Project is SO close to being done! Koolhaas is done, her jacket needs sleeves to be hemmed and buttons sewn on, and she's swatching for Raindrops. She's also totally distracted by yarn in my stash tthat would be PERFECT for Shusui by Susanne Sommer, who we were lucky enough to meet at EYF.  Book Reviews: Coffee and Colour Coffee with C.C. (and Dami too!) - find all the patterns on Ravelry here. You can also find C.C. and Dami on their videocast and blog - Geeky Girls Knit. Knit the Rainbow by Joy McMillan - find all the patterns on Ravelry here, and find Joy's yarns at The Knitting Goddess.      Wrap up Many thanks to C.C. and Joy for providing us with copies of their books to review. We hope you’ll check them out and find as much inspiration as we have. You can find the podcast on iTunes and Stitcher Radio and us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, in our Yarn in the City group on Ravelry, or in person on Wednesday nights at our knit night at The Goat on the Rise between 7 and 10pm. This innovative tool was created by Claudia, a knitter, and her engineer husband, to protect delicate knitting needles from damage while on a project in your knitting bag. Claudia had broken several pair of 00 wooden sock needles by being jostled around in her knitting bag and was desperate to find a way to protect her delicate, and expensive circulars. That was the Needle Keeper's original intention, but...it has turned out the Needle Keeper is perfect for keeping your live stitches from falling off the needle, and for protecting the joints (the needle to cable area). Extremely lightweight, practically indestructible, you can shove everything in your knitting bag and never worry. They make reaching into your bag and grabbing your project worry free, no dropped stitches!     They come in 12 beautiful, bright colors, which makes them easy to see deep in your bag! Buy a different color for each project, contrasting against the current yarn color, or color-code for the type of project you're working on. Knitters LOVE them, read the nearly 1,000 5-star reviews on Etsy and pick up a few. The coupon deal for the PalKal 2016 is buy 4 and get one free from their Etsy shop, Fiber To Fabric Magic! Put 5 in your cart and one will ring up FREE. Claudia will be giving away 2 Needle Keepers to a lucky listener of this Podcast, and you get to choose which colors you'd like!     Knitting Talkback: Yarn (The Movie)  I was recently sent a screener copy of Yarn and I really enjoyed it. It was a different take on the fiber for me, but I found it really interesting and informative. Check out the website for more information about where you can see this film.    Non-Knitting Segments   One Pot Wonders One Pot Summer Vegetable Pasta One of the easiest recipes I've made.      Love it or Leave it This one is a combo! I both love and leave cleaning out clothes that no longer fit me!    Other News and Notes Running Updates I am training for my marathon and having some issues on my runs, but fighting through it. I ran a charity run on Sunday, #CharlotteRunsForOrlando, and I have a race on July 4th with my friend Karen.    Book Updates I finished reading and/or listening to:    I Know I am But What Are You? By Samantha Bee   Prada and Prejudice by Katie Olver     I started reading and/or listening to:  A Murder in Time by Julie McElwain   Modern Romance by Aziz Ansari     Briefly I mentioned that my grandparents live in Rainelle, West Virginia, the site of some major flooding last week. They are (thankfully) ok and their home was spared, but they are lucky to live on a mountain. The town was completely destroyed, many people lost their homes and everything they have. Check out this blog post at Kelbourne Woolens about garter tabs.   This got me to thinking: how have I gotten away this long without doing a garter tab? Catching Up: (0:20) Jen has been working out to get into shape some more and she's enjoying it, but it's hard. She's been working on pattern writing. She's really loving the new season of Orphan Black. She and Ron have been working on the music. And she's enjoying Mad Men but is sad to see it go. Laura is normalizing to her new job. She got her new shipment from Annie Modesitt's yarn club and it's really, really pretty. It's inspired by a moth. And the extra is a matching bag from Namaste. She's working on the Sunnydale Yarn Club Patrol 4 Sign ups. We talk a little bit about Season 4 of Buffy. Even if you don't join to club, join the Dizzy Color Ravelry Group to talk about Buffy. She's also preparing for a trunk show at Ewe+You. She's also working on a new yarn club (Teaser!). In the Knitting Bag: (14:01) Jen has been working on the Ysolda Teague’s Wee Envelope out of Oink Pigments in purple. She's working on the Baby Yours Sweater by Stephanie Pearl-McPhee out of Cascade 220 SW Sport. She's regretting not getting the worsted for the blanket, because it's taking forever. She is working on Rainbow socks out of White Birch Fiber Arts self-striping sock yarn in Fade to Gray (rainbow and grey self-striping). She only works on one sock at a time. She worked on that up at a show at the Groundlings. She is working on her sample for Sunnydale so she can take pictures. Laura is working on a hat for Halos of Hope out of Knit Picks Brava. These seem to be her standard Disneyland knitting. She is also casting on the Carson Shawl by Romi Hill out of Forbidden Woolery Pride Fingering. This is her Knitalong (or Slackalong) with her friend. And she is almost done with Swirl Hat (Crochet) from Patons out of Knit Picks Gloss Fingering in black. Finished Objects: (24:03) Jen blocked her Baby Yours sweater and it's not seamed. She has a ton of partially finished stuff, but nothing finished. She is struggling with inspiration to knit. Laura had hoped to finish her Swirl Hat, but isn't done. But she will be done with it tomorrow. Jen is sad about her lack of finishing. We need a finishing bootcamp. We mention Stash Dash by the Knitgrillls and Miss Kalendar's Finishuary. Devil's Tower: (27:24) Jen's Devil's Tower is languishing. Laura pulled out Carson, even though she hadn't really started, but she had swatched so that's kind of started. Her Ink by Hanna Maciejewska is going to escape and get worked on at some point. Frog Pond: (28:52) Jen is not challenging herself as a knitter, so she has no Frog pond. Laura has been having some issues with her Swirl Hat because it's black yarn and crochet and she's not really used to it. We want to hear about your frog ponds in the episode thread! On Deck: (31:00) Jen doesn't feel like knitting and is so uninspired she's not queuing patterns. Laura used up all her On Decks forever in the last episode, with all of her Amy Herzog sweaters. She needs to make herself go kits, because all her yarn will be inaccessible for a while due to some home remodeling. She's overwhelmed by her list a bit, but we love all the designers. But as a bonus, Jen learned the difference between a bedroom and a bonus room! Knit Culture: (33:52) Jen has been feeling uninspired, so we talk about our knitting inspiration. Jen is inspired by her awesome friends who knit and crochet. For example, one of her friends has been posting her Sophie's Universe crochet projects. Her friend Melissa (who is well known to regular listeners) is an inspiration because of her color sense. Laura is inspired by her friend Dorothy, who is an amazing lace knitter. Jen and Laura's mutual friend Erica makes excellent sweaters and her finishing work is amazing. Laura gets hugely inspired by yarns: colors, groupings, etc. Jen used to have this inspiration but lately she hasn't been feeling it. While this keeps her from buying too much yarn, she wants it to be more of a struggle. Jen's friend Sarah is an amazing knitter, especially double knitting. Jen and Laura both find specific patterns pretty inspiring. We talk about how Kristin Omdahl has helped us reconsider crochet. Jen also talks about her friend Sandra who is an amazing fiber artist and does really cool yarn bombing projects and also other fiber art installations (including sweaters for fish). And of course Laura's first inspiration was her friend Jen (different Jen) who taught her how to knit initially. So who are your real life knitting inspirations? Geek Culture: (50:19) Agents of SHIELD has been awesome lately! And we are excited to see Age of Ultron. Jen wants to do a Marvel Cinematic Universe marathon. We also think Hot Topic Marvel Line. We're also a disappointed at the lack of Black Widow on Avengers merchandise. Upcoming Events: (54:48) Laura has a trunk show at Ewe and You on May 31st, for their first anniversary. We will be doing our own version of World Wide Knit in Public Day on June 20th from 2:30 to 5:30 at the Five O'Clock Winde Bar in Alamitos Bay Marina (right next to a yarn store). Camp CogKNITive is August 21-23, Camarillo, CA. It’s a great and relaxing weekend. Knit Dizzney will Sunday, September 13th, 2015. There will be T-shirts, project bags, and exclusive yarn available for pre-order. The meetup will be at 2pm at the Hearthstone Lounge in the Grand Californian. Yarnosphere is October 17-18 EXPO Art Center in Bixby Knolls, Long Beach. Laura is vending. Want Knotty Girls Swag? You can get some by donating! Click the donate button in the right sidebar! $10 gets you a set of stitch markers, $20 gets you a project bag, and $25 gets you both! Please include your name and mailing address when you donate and specify if you want crochet or knitting type stitch markers if applicable.

Today’s episode is sponsored by Dizzy Blonde Studios. For beautifully hand-dyed yarns and inspired knit design, please visit DizzyBlondeStudios.com. Catching Up: (1:18) Laura and her husband celebrated her 13th wedding anniversary and are having a dinner and movie date. She is finally seeing Maleficent, which Jen has seen and had mixed reviews about it. The anniversary is slightly overshadowed by the passing of her husband's uncle. Laura also caught up on Orphan Black and is almost done with Season 1 of Game of Thrones. She's working on making the next shipment of the Mean Girls Yarn Club, procrastinating on blog posts for both Mean Girls Yarn Club and Sunnydale Yarn Club. She's also procrastinating on entering stash into Ravelry. And she is working on dying the exclusive Knit Dizzney colorway and CogKNITive colorway. Jen got a little kicked around by the world these past couple of weeks, and she's trying to focus on the positive. She saw How to Train Your Dragon 2 which was cute. She's been watching the new season of Falling Skies and a new show, The Last Ship. She has the same complaints about Falling Skies, but she still enjoys it. She appreciates the diversity of the cast of The Last Ship, even though it's kind of a silly show. She saw some plays up at the Hollywood Fringe and she saw The Complete Works of Shakespeare Abridged. And she is excited to announce there is another niece or nephew on the way because Brother 1 and his wife are expecting Baby #2. In the Knitting Bag: (17:27) Laura is working (crocheting) on her Down the Garden Path Shawl by Michele DuNaeir in Lambie Toes in Special Hell.  She is working on her Yggdrasil Afghan by Lisa Jacobs out of reclaimed Berroco Vintage Chunky in Chocolate. Jen is working on the yoke for her Leah’s Lovely Cardigan from More Last Minute Knitted Gifts out of Malabrigo sock in Eggplant.  She's also working on her Water for the Elephants socks by Rose Hiver in some Knitpicks Stroll in a bare (natural) and Summer Blooms (pink). And she's swatching for her Ginny's Cardigan by Mari Chiba from Unofficial Harry Potter Knits out of Wollmeise Pure in Chim Chim Chimney for Camp Loopy Month 2. She is reworking the pattern for fingering weight. Finished Objects: (23:35) Jen finished her Lauriel Cardigan (by Ysolda Teague from Little Red in the City) out of Wollmeise DK in Pesto for Camp Loopy Month 1. She's super pleased with how it turned out. Devil's Tower: (26:41) Laura put the Knitted Scale Mail Gloves by CraftyMutt into Devil's Tower until she has the brain space to suss out the scale pattern.  She put the mitts for her husband (which incorporate design elements from Motoring Madness mittens by Audrey Nicklin from Lit Knits) away; she has knitting ennui. Jen pulled out some ancient socks, the Sock Strap by General Hogbuffer out of Knitpicks Stroll in Bare, Spring, and Dogwood Heather. She stopped working on them because she broke one of her needles. They have unusual construction.  We talk about anatomical sock toes. Frog Pond: (31:58) Laura frogged her Yggdrasil Afghan because she was unhappy with how the center looked. She had only knit 6 rows. She restarted on larger needles. On Deck: (36:05) Laura wants to make a Dreambird by Nadita Swings out of either Dizzy Blonde yarn.  She will make a(nother) slipped stitch hat for her other brother, out of Knitpicks Brava using this one to work out any issues with the pattern so she can publish.  And she wants to make the Effortless Cardigan by Hannah Fettig out of Dizzy Blonde DK. Jen has a huge list: the Citron Grande out of Desert Vista Dyeworks Voir in Cherry Icee, she wants to restart her Chickadee, the Dump Truck Cardigan for her nephew, the Playful Stripes Cardigan by Alana Dakos for the new baby out of Cascade 220 Superwash Sport out of teals and pinks and greys, and a layette for the new baby niece out of Cascade Heritage. She also wants to make booties and more baby things sweaters. She is happy to have a girl to knit for so she can make all manner of baby patterns. She also wants to make the Beulah Cardigan for Camp Loopy Month 3 out of Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light in Dried Rose. Knit Culture: (40:31) We recap the great time we had at our World Wide Knit in Public event. We had a great turn out, did some great shopping at Colors 91711 (Jen fell down on some recycled cashmere yarn), and had a great time. Thank you to Joni for the prize donations and the project bags you gave us. We also got donuts from the Museum of Donuts. We review Botanical Knits 2 by Alana Dakos, which retails for 18.00 for a PDF, 22.00 for the print book, and 40.00 for both Botanical Knits 1 and Botanical Knits 2. We both LOVE this book and highly, highly recommend it. We remind you that the stashdown is still going on. Post your finished projects in the June thread and you can win two patterns–the beautiful InfiniTAM donated by the amazing Deborah Tomasello and the Tan House Brook Shawl donated by BostonJen of the Down Cellar Studio Podcast (which you should all listen to, because it’s awesome. July's theme will be music, so post your FOs that are inspired by music in the thread. We let you all know that the ACTually KNITting Podcast is running a knitalong called the PAL KAL, which is themed to support podcasters. Use yarn or fiber or a pattern from a podcaster; see their thread for all the details. Geek Culture: (58:37) We point out this Verizon Ad about girls in science. We point out this awesome article about Jesse Seay's tutorial for knitting a working circuit. It's awesome. We talk about knitting software and apps. Some charting software we have used are EnvisioKnit (purchasable), Knit Visualizer (purchasable), Stitch Maps (free,web-based), Sconcho (free download), and Stitchworks Software (a purchasable software for crochet). Some apps we like are Stitchminder (a stitch counter app), Evernote (cloud storage, not specifically for knitting but great for storing Ravelry download patterns), Knit Companion, Yarma (interfaces with Ravelry for photo uploads), Wooly (interfaces with Ravlery to update projects), and Button Wizard (calculates where to put buttonholes on buttonbands). We mention the The Diet Diary for some knitting calculators. Events: (1:09:40) We are both going to the CogKNITive retreat run by Dr. Gemma of the CogKNITive Podcast on July 25. There is an exclusive colorway you can pre-order in Dr. Gemma's group. KnitDizzney will be Sunday, September 7, 2014.  Save the date.  There will be exclusive colorways and T-shirts for purchase and we will have a meetup at the picnic spiral. We will be at Yarnosphere on October 4th and 5th at the Expo Arts Center in Bixby Knolls in Long Beach. Dizzy Blonde will be a vendor and Jen will just be there for fun. We've interviewed the organizers of Yarnosphere in Episode 10. And Jen and Laura will both be at the CogKNITive Fiber Retreat on October 11 in the La Quinta Inn in Tehachapi. Dizzy Blonde will be vending. Sign ups are open. Our next milestone prize will be at 1000 members, so join the Ravelry Group. Purlescence Address: Purlescence Yarns your name & the name of your team 564 South Murphy Ave Sunnyvale, CA 94086 Catching Up: (5:58) Laura and her husband took the weekend off to recuperate after having family visit. She's working to catalog her stash. She is also preparing for her last round of Nerd Wars for a while. And she's getting ready for Stitches West. Jen has been working seriously long hours because of Flu season (stay healthy). The only good thing is that the extra lab time has given her more podcast listening time. She saw several movies, including The Hobbit, American Hustle, and Nebraska. She's been seeing her friend's band play. She and Ron also had a Disney Day to see the Winter World of Color and the last performance of Billy Hill and the Hillbillies. In the Knitting Bag: (17:08) Laura made a stripey hat out of acrylic remnants for Stripe it Up January. She's also making a premie hat for the Knitmore Girls Head to Toe collection. She's also working up the Olivia’s Butterfly Hat, reworking the pattern to be done in sport weight yarn for the Stitches West Passport Game. And she worked on her 22 Leaves Shawlette by Lankakomero, out of Mean Girls Yarn Club in Heart in a Box. She is still struggling with bead placement. Jen is working on her Sweetheart of the Rodeo sweater (her own design) out of Wollmeise DK in So Long Kitty (pink), Shalimar Breathless DK in Snopea (green), and Dream in Color Smooshy in Butterpeeps (yellow). She is also working on Twistygoo by Lisa M. Beamer in Knitpicks Brava in Wine. And she is working on a secret cowl. Finished Objects: (23:37) Laura finished two stripey hats. One was out of mystery acrylic and one was out of Dizzy Blonde DK mini skeins. Jen finished a Twistygoo out of Delicious Yarns Frosting Worsted in Blueberry and Pistachio, leftover from the gramps sweater she made for her nephew. She striped them for Stripe it Up January. She finished the California Poppy Shawl by Lydia Tsymbal out of Baah La Jolla in My Sweet Valentine for Melissa and a Gerri Hat in Peter Pan Wendy Yarn in the colorway speckled blue. And she finished her vanilla socks in very old Opal Sock Yarn (the Rainforest series, colorway Flamingo, which is pink). Frog Pond: (26:50) Jen had lots of gauge issues this week. She frogged her Kently Socks by Heather Ordover from Hitch: Patterns Inspired by the Films of Alfred Hitchcock because they were too big. She also had to completely frog her entire sweater, because her Wollmeise DK and her Shalimar Breathless DK do not give the same gauge on the same needles. She would have known that if she had swatched with both yarns. On Deck: (31:38) Laura is planning to do many stripey knit hats and crocheted hats and something for the Ravellenics. Jen will be making another stripey Twistygoo out of yellow Plymouth Encore Yarn and something else. She will also make other hats, she will make two pairs of Kently socks for the Knitmore Girls #matchymatchyKAL (a pair for her and a pair for Ron). She will also have her Ravellenics project. Knit Culture: (35:19) One of Jen's favorite Yarns We answer questions from our Knotty Talk Thread about stash and yarn. We talk about stash and how we store it. We also talk about our favorite yarns (Laura: Brooks Farm Primero (her oldest stash), Jen: Vice Yarn Paradigm in Drunken Cherries, also 1000 yards of white cashmere laceweight), needles (Laura: Hiya Hiya, Jen: partial to Knitpicks needles (affordable and sharp tips), Karbonz, and Chiaogoo, and Addi Lace), and knitting bags (Laura: Namaste Zuma Bag and Jordana Paige Bella Bag, Jen: Namaste Harlowe also Slipped Stitch Studios bags, but she also uses grocery totes and clear bags from Loopy Ewe). Don't forget to Flash Your Stash to win a digital copy of of Doomsday Knits courtesy of Cooperative Press. And post your stripey FOs for a chance at another TBD prize. We talk about the Ravellenic Games and Team Sasquatch.  Knit for Ravellnics, Team Sasquatch, or both. Laura will be working on Down the Garden Path by Michele DuNaier and Jen will be doing a one-skein shawl of her own design. Geek Culture: (1:01:10) Neat Doctor Who baked goods picture gallery from a BBC America party. We want to know if you have thoughts on casting Michael Douglas in Ant-Man (which also has Paul Rudd). And we both love the Muppets Most Wanted trailer and are super excited! Events: (1:07:06) We will be at Stitches West, which is February 20-23 in Santa Clara, CA at the Convention Center. Dizzy Blonde Studios & Skeindalous Yarns are sharing a booth (booth 906 and 908). The Dizzy Blonde booth is a collection point for Halos of Hope hats for Team KnottyGirls (the final collection point!). With prizes! Shout out to the Purlescence Girls (who have the booth across from us) and we are right next to Halos of Hope (Booth 904). We will be doing a meet and greet Saturday 12:00-1:00 at the Dizzy Blonde Booth. We will be at the Friday Fashion Show and Banquet. Jen has a sweater in it (made with Laura's lovely yarn). We will be doing a World Wide Knit in Public event sometime between June 7 – June 15, 2014, location to be determined. Our next milestone prize will be at 1000 members, so join the Ravelry group! This episode is sponsored by Dizzy Blonde Studios. “For beautifully hand-dyed yarns and inspired knit design.” Shoutouts to Knit 1 Geek 2 Podcast and The Hollywood Knitter Podcast for playing our promo. Catching Up (1:24) Jen traveled and it was too hot to knit. She also got some new yarn from the Unique Sheep Gourmet Club and Cookie A’s Sock Club. The patterns in this month’s Cookie A Club are inspired by Star Trek, one of the cookie recipes is reminiscent of Doctor Who, and the yarn is from Sweet Georgia. Laura had family visiting. She also worked on prepping for our World Wide Knit in Public Day Event. She has also been dying a lot because her yarn is in a new shop, KnitKabob, in Union Oregon. Slimy, yet satisfying The newest Mean Girls Yarn Club shipment went out. In the Knitting Bag (7:45) Lacy Cap. Laura is working on the Lacy Cap by Carissa Browning in Rowan Cashsoft 4-ply in a lavender colorway for someone with trichotillomania. It’s pretty spectacular. Jen started her Camp Loopy Project. She’s knitting the Tiong Bahru out of Fleece Artist Saldanha Two yarn. She continues to work on her Madroña Shawl. Finished Objects(11:38) This is a very serious scarf. Laura finished a Yarn Over Cross Scarf for Interval House in Brown Sheep Company Lanaloft Worsted. A finished shawl! In spite of procrastination. Jen finished her scarf for Interval House as well. She also finished her Romi Hill Mysterious Shawl Knit-a-long. Jen mentions the Knitmore Girls. Devil’s Tower (15:19) Laura is struggling with her Nerd Wars projects. She is struggling with time to work on stuff. Creative planning is why this isn’t yet done. She also is intentionally not knitting on a Jayne Hat Hat of Controversy so she can use it in WIP challenge. Jen still isn’t working on her baby sweater. Frog Pond (22:05) Jen had problems counting while working on her Tiong Bahru. On Deck (23:43) Laura is struggling with her Sabre Project so she’s changed her dissertation project. She’s now working on six bears for the Mother Bear Project (something that Dr. Gemma talks a lot about on CogKNITive). They will be Firefly themed, to go with the “Jayne Cubb” she made for last year’s CogKNITive Fiber Retreat KAL. Jen is going to make a Tempest Cardigan for her July Camp Loopy Project out of Dream in Color Smooshy. She also wants to work on a giant afghan using all the squares from the Great American Afghan, Great North American Afghan, and Great American Aran Afghan books. She’ll be knitting it out of Cascade 220. Knotty Talk (33:10) We answer a question about summer knitting projects from Spiritsmith. Both like socks because they are small and portable and not too hot. Laura mentions the Lady Clementine Socks. Laura also likes hats such as the Nine Dwindling Cables Beret. Jen likes lace because it’s not too heavy. She mentions designers Caitlin ffrench and the Mizzle Shawl. For crochet, Laura likes tawashis. They also recommend some more difficult designers for people who are off school or work and have time for something complicated: Sivia Harding, Romi Hill, Steven West, and Jared Flood. WWKIP (37:50) We talk about our WWKIP event and play some interviews. We loved meeting everyone and were so glad you all came. Thank you to everyone who brought scarves for Interval House. This episode is sponsored by Dizzy Blonde Studios. "For beautifully hand-dyed yarns and inspired knit design." Catching Up: (0:45) Laura lost her dog Sabre. She is trying to keep busy, but it's been really hard. Jen's Stitch and Beach Group had a yarn swap. She got some different novelty yarn to play with (it will probably become charity scarves for Interval House). She also got some pretty purple laceweight yarn. Laura mentions the Cogknitive Fiber Retreat yarn swap. We talk about how useful yarn swaps are, both to give yarns you may not use a good home with people who really love them and to get yarns that you aren't used to working with (different colors and fibers) to break out of your comfort zone. We both both bought things out of our comfort zones on the Yarn Crawl. In the Knitting Bag (5:45) Jen cast on the Mysterious Shawl Knit-a-long by Romi Hill out of A Verb for Keeping Warm Floating in the colors Au Lait and Transnational Fury. Laura is still working on her Clapotis (or, as she calls it, her Sassy-tis, because the yarn was dyed to match her cat, Sassy). Laura is also working on a beaded choker design and trying to chart it and make the directions make sense and make it the correct size. Progress was a little sidelined by Sabre's passing, but now the pattern is off to the test knitter. Jen also worked on an easy scarf out of Lion Brand Homespun while watching the new Star Trek movie. She named the scarf "Chekov put on a Red Shirt" because she thinks Chekov is adorable. Jen mentions her knitting guilds: the El Segundo Slipt Stitchers and the Chocolate Martini Lace Knitters Guild. We mention designers Marnie Maclean and Janine le Cras, who does the patterns for the Unique Sheep. We digress about Chekov and Sulu in the original series and the animated series of Star Trek. Frog Pond: (15:56) Jen has had to rip back some of the bind off in the center section of her Madroña shawl because it was too tight. (Jen has issues with tight bind-offs and crocheting too tightly). Laura recommends wine to relax. Jen is hoping that beer and a marathon of Vikings with her friend will do the trick. Laura tried to substitute yarn on the Nine Dwindling Cables Beret by Yarn Owl. But math was not her friend. She's going to rip and re-knit a modified version. On Deck: (19:35) Jen is going to do a lace shawl for Camp Loopy out of Fleece Artist Saldanha Two in Vermillion color. She hasn't yet picked a project. She thinks the red color is wrong for Rock Island, so she will probably knit a pattern by BooKnits or the Romi Hill pattern Fire Bird (which she mistakenly calls "Firebrand"). Laura is going to handpaint some yarn to match Sabre and work on a scarf and fingerless mitts for her husband. This is her dissertation for Nerd Wars. Book Review: (23:58) We review 50 Sunlowers to Knit, Crochet, and Felt by Kristin Nicholas. (Full disclosure: Laura won this book in a contest from Vogue Knitting). Movie Reviews: (31:53) We give spoiler-free reviews of both Iron Man 3 and Star Trek: Into Darkness. TV Talk: (39:05) Jen talks a bit about the season finale of Doctor Who and the companions (no spoilers!). We digress into less geeky shows. Laura talks about the season ends of Grey's Anatomy, Castle, and Scandal. (All spoiler-free). We also discuss How I Met Your Mother. And then we get into the Big Bang Theory and being a geek. Also, we wish Tim Curry (star of Clue, Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Oscar) a speedy recovery! We also mention the films Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Singin' in the Rain. Events: (49:22) The Knotty Girls are hosting a World Wide Knit in Public Day Event at the Grand Californian Hotel and Spa on June 15, 2013 from 1 to 3pm. No entrance to the park is required, and parking at Downtown Disney is free for up to three hours (five with validation from a restaurant or the movie theatre in Downtown Disney). There will be SWAG! Bring: 1. Your Knitting (or whatever else you want to work on) 2. Money for snacks and/or drinks 3. Any FOs you want to show off 4. A scarf for Interval House. Details: The scarf can be any yarn, any weight and may be knit, crochet, or woven. (Great for stash-busting if you want to do stripes!). The only guideline is that it be at least 4” wide and 60” long. A more open work scarf is preferred (i.e. not a heavy dense fabric) as this is for women in Southern California, but really, that can just mean using really big needles. I tend to do mine either in garter stitch or a simple rib or broken rib on big needles. Please bring the scarf in a ziplock or some other bag (the bag does not have to seal) with a paper saying your name, the yarn the scarf is made of (if you know it, if you don’t that’s okay), and any care instructions. Also please provide contact info (email and/or phone number). The contact info is just for us to get in touch with you if you win the drawing; we will not sell, trade, lend, borrow, fold, spindle, or mutilate your contact info and it will not be provided to my guild or to Interval House, I promise you. Multiple scarves = multiple entries in the drawing! KnitDizzney will be Sunday, September 8th, 2013. More details to come, but we'd love to spend a day at the Disneyland park with you!

Podcast Origin Story: (1:50) Laura and Jen talk about how they met at Stitches West and decided to start a podcast. In the Knitting Bag: (5:40) Laura is knitting a Clapotis in some Dizzy Blonde Studios Superwash Sock dyed to match the color of her cat, Sassy. Jen is working on the Easy Baby Sweater out of Classic Elite Liberty Wool. She's procrastinating on the sleeves. That's okay because Laura procrastinates on sock feet. Jen is also working on the Madroña by Romi Hill in Prism Delicato. She recommends winding that yarn in an outside-pull ball rather than a center-pull. We mention yarn bowls by Knit Witch and Jennie the Potter. Finished Objects: (12:10) Jen finished the Elizabeth Zimmerman Cloche in Sweet Georgia BFL Sock. This was a sample knit, but she wishes she could keep it! Laura finished a crocheted shawl-- The Summer Storm in Dizzy Blonde Superwash Sock. She's going to make another one for her mother-in-law. Laura also needs to make some Kninja Kitties! Devil's Tower (UFOs in hibernation): (17:30) Jen is not working on her Bashful Butterflies Shawl because she's not motivated. Laura suggests using a 20-sided die to help Jen power through it. Laura is not knitting on her 22 Leaves Shawlette because she can't decide on bead placement. Jen isn't knitting on Sock Strap socks because she broke a needle. This is the second time this has happened to her since Christmas. Frog Pond: (26:00) Laura had to frog her Sylvi Coat due to poor yarn choice. Acrylic yarns don't block. On Deck: (30:00) Laura is going to recycle the Berroco Vintage Chunky Yarn from her Sylvi to make a Yggdrasil Afghan. Jen has QABLE! (Queue Acquisition Beyond Life Expectancy) She can't decide. She will use some Delicious Yarns to design a sweater for her nephew. Interview with a Podcaster: (34:35) Jen talks about learning to knit, her interests outside of knitting, her blog her geeky fandoms, and her statistically significant other. Laura gives her "origin story." She talks about learning to knit, starting to design, her geeky fandoms, her husband, her stepchildren and step-grandchildren (She's a young step-grandma!), her dogs, and her yarn dying Dizzy Blonde Studios and the Mean Girls Yarn Club. We mention the Charlotte's Web Shawl, the Wingspan Shawl, and bandwagon knitting. We also talk about old-school geek shows. Events: (52:40) The Knotty Girls are hosting a World Wide Knit in Public Day Event at the Grand Californian Hotel and Spa on June 15, 2013 from 1 to 3pm. No entrance to the park is required, and parking at Downtown Disney is free for up to three hours (five with validation from a restaurant or the movie theatre in Downtown Disney). Bring: 1. Jasmin will be knitting at Santana Row with Miss Kalendar (from Brass Needles) and Tika (from Gives Good Knit). Gigi will be knitting with the Fiber Collective in Los Angeles. On the Needles: (02:06) Gigi and Jasmin had a GREAT time at the Retzlaff Winery spinning event! (Jasmin talks about the Pygora/Wool lace yarn from Hollyhock Hollow farm.) Jasmin has been on a finishing kick! She has finished her Houdini Socks. (You can find the cutting tutorial here.) Gigi has finished her first sock out of the Abstract Fiber Supersock in Lady Macbeth. Gigi talks about a Lucy Neatby bind-off technique. Jasmin has picked up her Mesmer socks again (you can find the Mesmer pattern here), and is in LOVE! She's knitting it in a burnt orange colorway of the Colinette Jitterbug. Gigi finished her first Coriolis sock in a new pair. She has found herself immersed in using Cat Bordhi and Lucy Neatby techniques! Jasmin is returning to her Monkey socks. Gigi and Jasmin discuss the 52 pair plunge. Jasmin recommends modifying these types of KALs with more reasonable expectations. Jasmin tells a stash enhancement story, where she wheels and deals for some hot pink Koigu. She's looking for sweater suggestions for it. Mother Knows Best: (21:25) We discuss Netiquette and Ravelry. When Knitting Attacks: (25:32) Gigi is on her third try on her Coriolis. Jasmin has been Mesmerized, and has been having issues reading directions. Gigi's Upstream socks are having issues, and she desperately needs a bout of startitis. Jasmin talks about picking up a fleece for Meghan (from Stitch-it!), and misreading her text. Straw into Gold: (33:26) Jasmin bought a little Pygora (from Hollyhock Hollow Farms), and will talk about spinning it in a future podcast. Jasmin talks about overdyeing naturally colored fiber. Jasmin talks about getting outstanding customer service from Schacht, and the "silencing a noisy bobbin" trick with White Lithium Grease. Meghan, Erin, and Jasmin split two fleeces from Janet Heppler. Frank was a dark, 10 1/2 lb merino/corriedale mix. Luther is a white, 12 lb merino corriedale blend with super long staple length. Meghan's grey cormo fleece came from Sue Reuser, as did a white cormo fleece that Erin and Jasmin are splitting. Meghan has thrown down the gauntlet- if Jasmin hand-processes 4 lbs of fleece, Meghan will knit a lace shawl on smallish needles (US 5-6). Jasmin mentions Aija's tutorials on processing fleeces in locks.

A knitting needle was collateral damage. Jasmin talks about her Cabletini socks. She compares the beginning of the sock to the witches' feet (in the film, The Witches). They have been ripped out and re-started.Jasmin talks about her Sunshine socks, and the changes she's made.Bring it On: (43:36)We discuss how to avoid knitting mistakes, and solve others.1- Read all of the directions before you start knitting. Twice. (Jasmin is often defeated by "At the same time", "at each end".)2- Swatch. Wash it. 3- Don't rip prematurely. - When knitting lace, use lifelines.- Make a photocopy of your pattern (for your personal use). Make notes in the margin.
