It was written by and starred Richard Murdoch and Kenneth Horne as officers in a fictional RAF station coping with red tape and the inconveniences and incongruities of life in the Second World War. Singers in the show's musical interludes included Gwen Catley, Maudie Edwards, Binnie Hale and Doris Hare. Among those appearing as guest stars were Phyllis Calvert, Richard Dimbleby, Glynis Johns, Alan Ladd and Jean Simmons. The show followed It's That Man Again as the most popular British radio comedy and was succeeded by Take It from Here and The Goon Show. This movie had a fantastic cast, director, and writer and was well reviewed critically. But does it hold up? A few of the topics that Arthur and Ryan comment on are characters breaking numerous moral and ethical boundaries in WYWS, the theoretical importance of leaning, farcical comedy's love of the miscommunication trope, and movie titles getting dropped with varying levels of clumsiness somewhere into the dialogue. Directed by Jon Turteltaub (National Treasure), While You Were Sleeping stars Sandra Bullock, Bill Pullman, Peter Gallagher, Peter Boyle, Jack Warden, Glynis Johns, Micole Mercurio, Jason Bernard, Michael Rispoli, Ally Walker, Monica Keena, Ruth Rudnick, Marcia Wright, and Dick Cusack. “I was singing for the troops when I was only a kid of course during the Second World War and I just enjoyed singing right from the start— and it’s pretty well the same thing now. I sing because I like to sing. I don’t sing to make a living, although I guess I do!” Petula Clark is here, to open season two of this program. The star, who for seven decades has captivated audiences the world over in live concerts and on records in five different languages, has a passion for music and for the stage that remain undiminished. What drives her love, her need for music? How has she been coping with month after month of darkened theaters? She and Daniel also dig into some of the fundamental questions about music-- how do different people hear it? How can one teach it? Ever skeptical of nostalgia, Petula speaks of her deep fondness for some of the people who played a role in her life who are no longer around-- Ella Fitzgerald, her longtime friend, and Fred Astaire, with whom she starred in Francis Ford Coppola's Finian's Rainbow. Petula's love for her contemporary colleague Amy Winehouse is powerful and moving. For any lover of music or culture in the 20th century, this is a must-hear conversation. Petula Sally Olwen Clark was born in West Ewell Surrey, England on November 15, 1932. Petula made her first broadcast as a singer for the BBC Radio Overseas Service in October 1942, and became an overnight star on BBC National Radio in December 1942 at the age of 10. After many radio shows for the BBC during World War 2, Petula made her film debut in "Medal for the General" in 1945. Notable films include the classic Powell/Pressburger film "I know where I'm going" (1945), London Town (USA "My heart goes crazy") (1946), Vice Versa (directed by Peter Ustinov) (1948), and the classic Huggett trio of family films which were to be the forerunner of television soap operas in the UK (1948-9). Her first leading role was in "Don't ever leave me" (1949), and "The Card" (USA "The Promoter") with Alec Guinness and Glynis Johns (1952). As well as her film work, Petula was a regular on BBC radio and television and British stage variety shows, and from 1957 in France and other European territories. She acted in comedy radio shows such as "Life of Bliss" and radio series with her pianist and musical director Joe "Mr Piano" Henderson. Petula was a recording star in the UK from 1949, with "The little shoemaker"(1954) being her first top 10 hit (also hitting #1 in Australia) and "With all my heart" which took her to France where by 1962 she became their top female singer with such big selling hits as "Chariot", "Coeur blessé" and "Ya ya twist", securing her the prestigious Grand Prix National du Disques Francais. Her hits in four languages included "Monsieur" selling a million copies sung in German! Her song "Sailor" became her first of 2 #1 hits in the UK. As well as her CBE presented by Queen Elizabeth in 1998, in 2012 Petula was awarded the honour of Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters in Paris, for her distinguished career in France. In 2013 at the age of 80 Petula was back with a new Top 30 album success in the UK ("Lost in you" Sony Records), and her new recording of "Cut copy me" became a remixed dance top 40 hit all over Europe. The song was also voted by the prestigious "Time" magazine into their Top 10 songs of 2013. ----------------- talkingbeats.com Please consider supporting Talking Beats with Daniel Lelchuk via our Patreon: patreon.com/talkingbeats In addition to early episode access, bonus episodes, and other benefits, you will contribute to us being able to present substantive interviews with the world's most compelling people. Here we are at the end of 2020 taking stock of the strange and intense year that was.  There's lots of introspection, reflection, and depression happening.  So does Hot Date have the movie for you!  1973's Under Milk Wood, starring Richard Burton, Peter O'Toole,  Elizabeth Taylor, Glynis Johns, and a bevy of wonderful British character actors, is a film adaptation of Welsh writer Dylan Thomas's tone poem. Dan and Vicky ring in the New Year with a discussion of this forgotten and unique experimental film from director Andrew Sinclair.  Also on deck is alot of recently seen including Netflix's The Prom, HBO's The Flight Attendant, several Hitchcock classics and recent horror films Relic and Becky.   Give a listen to Hot Date 119 and leave us some feedback on our social media accounts.  www.hotdatepod.com

Last year Kate and Betsy discussed three potential Caldecott winners, and two would later receive medals. This year, the two discuss Dreamers by Yuyi Morales, Blue by Laura Vaccaro Seeger, and We Don't Eat Our Classmates by Ryan T. Higgins. And, as per usual, Kate brings up stuff Betsy never considered before. Questions like, how exactly does Penelope Rex eat her classmates so quickly (does she unhinge her jaw?). What does "caminantes" mean? And does the guy in Blue rename his girlfriend's dog? Kate has a violent reaction to one of the three books that Betsy finds deeply amusing. Then they out that Frances, from Bread and Jam for Frances, was originally supposed to be a vole, and Betsy's mind. Is. Blown. Show Notes: - Actually Pete Seeger is Laura Vaccaro Seeger's husband's uncle, not her own. Uncle-in-law, let's say. - Here is the PW interview Yuyi Morales and Neal Porter that gave a lot of great background information to Dreamers: https://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/childrens/childrens-authors/article/77766-in-conversation-yuyi-morales-and-neal-porter.html - Here is the Horn Book interview with Laura Vaccaro Seeger that discussed Blue: https://www.hbook.com/2018/12/publishers-preview-picture-books-five-questions-laura-vaccaro-seeger/ - And here is the PW interview with Ryan T. Higgins about We Don't Eat Our Classmates: https://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/childrens/childrens-authors/article/77167-q-a-with-ryan-t-higgins.html - Kate was completely right, by the way. The Triceratops and T.rex were contemporaries. Here's the article I was thinking of when I said the T.rex was farther from the Stegosaurus than we are from the T.rex: https://gizmodo.com/less-time-separates-us-from-t-rex-than-t-rex-from-stego-1614025559 - You can find the link to the Frances / Debbi Michiko Florence, Jasmine Toguchi series here, as spotted by Emily Schneider: https://imaginaryelevators.blog/2019/01/06/jasmine-toguchi-what-was-a-talent-anyway/ - Glynis Johns read all the Frances books?!? This is huge news! - And here is Kate's board game. Bear with us, D-Lovers, as we tell the tale of ROB ROY, THE HIGHLAND ROGUE. Rob Roy MacGregor is a proud Scotsman whose refusal to bow to the new King of England (who is German) puts him into conflict with the Secretary of State (who is Scottish), kicking off a guerrilla-like campaign; against the wishes of Ma MacGregor (who is a Campbell) and his new bride (who is Glynis Johns). It's actually a rather simple, if somewhat anti-climactic story; but Disney knew how to make a period history movie back in the 1950s, so there's lots of period accurate costumes and on-location shooting for our hosts to swoon over - and that's not even mentioning Richard Todd's bare chest.

Stephen Sondheim's song, Send In the Clowns, from the musical 'A Little Night Music' was written late in rehearsals for the actress Glynis Johns, playing the part of Desiree. A song of regret and anger, the part has famously been played by Judi Dench, and the song became an independent hit, sung by Judy Collins, Shirley Bassey and Barbra Striesand. Hannah Waddingham played the youngest ever Desiree in Trevor Nunn's production, and used her memories of an unhappy relationship to inspire her performance.
