The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE: [3:40] Marla reveals how she began her focus on healing her body image[10:07] How negative body image can show up in our lives[19:20] Listening to your body and befriending yourself[25:52] Choosing the road of self-compassion and acceptance[30:48] Reframing your perception of your body image KEY TAKEAWAYS: People believe reaching a certain weight or body shape will bring them happiness and confidence, but true healing comes from addressing deeper emotional and psychological factors, not just physical appearance. How we feel about our bodies can impact our relationships, work, self-worth, and ability to be present. It can lead to comparison, avoidance of opportunities, and even withholding joy from ourselves.Recognizing and challenging diet culture, societal pressures, and past traumas is crucial for improving body image. Developing self-compassion, addressing underlying emotional wounds, and reframing our relationship with food and our bodies are key steps to healing.Finding a balanced, self-compassionate approach to body acceptance and eating is essential. Instead of rigid dieting allow for self-acceptance, mindful choices, and kindness toward oneself—much like a best friend offering support.QUOTES: [6:10] “I needed deep help with this. So that's what took me on this journey of recovery, of healing my relationship with my body and my food.” Marla Mervis-Hartmann[9:44] “We can be so mean to ourselves, the things that we say in our head compared to what we would never say out loud to someone else, but we say them to ourselves.” Jenn Trepeck[25:09] “If you're hearing this right now, that moment when something shows up and maybe it's not even around your food and your body, perhaps it's about something completely different, that you just have this seed of wisdom that says, ‘Let's be kind to me here'.” Marla Mervis-Hartmann[29:21] “I would try to walk beside someone in a window to see our reflection, because I was like ‘She's thin, am I as thin as her?', and then I would compare myself.” Marla Mervis-Hartmann[32:48] “And now, what can I do for myself? Even if we ask it instead of what we would say to a friend, and now ‘what can I do for you?' say, ‘what can I do for me?' I love that question.” Jenn Trepeck[36:26] “We're having this conversation and we say ‘their body is okay for them, but their body would not be OK for me'. That disconnect, then, ask the following question: ‘Why is it okay for them and not for you? What's the other thing they have that makes it alright that I don't have that makes it not OK?'” Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramGUEST RESOURCES: Love Your Body Love Yourself - BookBreaking the Cycle - Free GiftLove Your Body Love Yourself - WebsiteTEDx Talk: The Secret Ingredient to Feeling Good in Your BodyBe-Friend Yourself - BookMarla Mervis-Hartmann- InstagramLove Your Body Love Yourself - FacebookMarla Mervis-Hartmann - YouTubeGUEST BIOGRAPHY: Marla Mervis-Hartmann is a dynamic speaker, bestselling author, and coach specializing in body confidence, food freedom, and self-love. Happy Satiated Saturday! Body shame is body communication. If body shame could speak, it might say, “It doesn't feel safe to be as you are. I'm trying to protect you from the pain you've already endured.”Body shame often acts as a shield, guarding against judgment and rejection. No one could be as cruel to you as you are to yourself. This can feel like a defense, ensuring that no one else's words can hurt you more than your own.Body shame can create a thick impenetrable wall around you that no one can get in but neither can you. It can lead to feeling disconnected from yourself where your body becomes a tool rather than a living being that allows you to experience sights, sounds, smells, textures, and tastes. Send us a textNew Year's resolution? Diet? Eat better for a few weeks, then go back to old habits? Well, maybe they aren't resolutions at all but wishful thinking.Resolution means to be resolved, a firm decision to do something or not. But what if deeper beliefs run contrary to that "resolution" preventing you from getting that better body or better life and not eating emotionally. Why keep going through that awful cycle of shame and diet, rinse and repeat?Something deeper is going on. A perfect podcast to start off the new year.Today I speak with author Marla Mervis-Hartmann who wrote the best-seller BE-Friend Yourself: Finding Freedom with Food and Peace with Your BodyShe is also the Tedx speaker of The Secret Ingredient to Feeling Good in your Body.We dig into the deeper associations we have with food. When an emotion feels too big, we binge, and for that moment the emotion is met, but no healing has taken place. It can be a black hole of trying to fill this empty feeling. It becomes a pattern, a cycle. We socialize and celebrate with food, we console loss with food, and we eat food on the couch when we're run down. But what if we've moved on and don't require food for that? What if you heal those stressors within, healing the wound, healing that emotion that correlates to the eating? What if a resolution truly meant just that, to treat your body and self with healthy food and self-regulation? Instead, creating a day of eating well to succeed, in your body and in your life. What if we were free from those crutches and food could be your friend? This is a deeper conversation about food and emotions. Take a listen and share it with someone who might be struggling with food, feeling alone in this fight. Marla is the creator and founder of Love Your Body Love Yourself. She helps women find a resounding “YES!” to the question: Do you love your body? And like all the guests I have on the show, Marla walks the talk. She's the real deal. She's been in the trenches of warfare with her own body, too — and she knows what the struggle is like. I ask some of the questions that have been top of my mind for me for a long time: Because dieting is so toxic to our bodies and minds, what do I do if I want to shrink the size of my body? What would you say to someone who's terrified right now, and she doesn't love her body? What do we do in those moments when we feel so scared and so stuck about weight? As a professional Marla, has been featured at TEDx Salinas. She was the leading body image expert and reiki master at Journey Malibu, a drug/alcohol rehabilitation center. After you listen in, you're probably going to feel a whole lot of relief and acceptance —and you'll know, once and for all, that when it comes to the weight loss struggle, you're not alone.
