Happy New Year!! 2022 In this episode, I covered the difference between setting intentions and new year resolutions. It's a short and sweet episode. Intention-setting is less about a specific goal and more about a shift in mindset to help achieve that goal. While resolutions are hard and fast goals that are either achieved or broken, intentions are broader ideas. To get you started, here are some examples of clear intentions you can set: I intend to lead by example. I intend to love unconditionally. I intend to stop taking things personally. I intend to manifest happiness naturally. I intend to see the goodness around me. I intend to be kind even when under pressure. A couple of journaling questions to get you started in setting intentions. What are my core values and beliefs? What is one hope for the remainder of this year? What is the number one goal for my relationship with myself? What do I want to stand for? What is my number one goal for being happy and healthy? Valeria Garcia (she/ella) is the Founder of First-Gen Professionals! She is a proud immigrant who navigated her education and most of her career as an undocumented person pre and post-DACA. She started the First-Gen Professional Network to highlight the identity and experiences that she felt and continue to feel is missing from the academic and professional discourse. There were so many things “new” things she didn't know how to navigate like how to interview, negotiate salary, seek promotions, choose health insurance, understand retirement plans, save, buy a home, deal with overt and covert racism (and many others) because her family does not have access to many of the privileges she does. The first-gen identity didn't end after earning a college degree, yet much of the support does. In many ways, a college degree leads to assumed expectations that will not only know what's next but also know how to do it. First Gen Professionals network is to amplify the voices, deconstruct the ‘professional' identity and experiences, share resources, provide professional development opportunities, and overall create a community. In this episode we covered: What it means to be a first-gen graduate and professional How networking allowed her to graduate debt-free with her Master's Degree How to Find Community and tips for students on how to find community.
