As a sort of "Re-Boot" for The Leftover Pieces; Suicide Loss Conversations podcast after taking the last 6 weeks of 2024 "off" I am choosing to 'start over' this way .... please listen weekly to Down the Rabbit Hole episodes dropped at the start of each week and / or listen daily to these readings from The Daily Stoic-- nuggets as I call them -- of wisdom passed along from Ryan Holiday. Stephen Hanselman and the ancient Greek Philosophers such as Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus and Seneca. I hope you will do both. I hope you will consider journaling along with me. I hope it provides some inspiration, even motivation to keep going, to how we do what we do, to why we do what we do in moving forward 'after'...I hope it is a tool that you (like me) might find useful in your life after loss by suicide. The following is an excerpt directly from the book -- they are not my words and are placed here as a sample to help you journal. The full book must be purchased to follow along all yearTODAYS READING January 1 - CONTROL & CHOICEGet your own copy of The Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday & Stephen Hanselman**“The chief task in life is simply this: to identify and separate matters so that I can say clearly to myself which are externals not under my control, and which have to do with the choices I actually control. Where then do I look for good and evil? Not to uncontrollable externals, but within myself to the choices that are my own . . .” —EPICTETUS, DISCOURSES, 2.5.4–5"The single most important practice in Stoic philosophy is differentiating between what we can change and what we can't. What we have influence over and what we do not. A flight is delayed because of weather—no amount of yelling at an airline representative will end a storm. No amount of wishing will make you taller or shorter or born in a different country. No matter how hard you try, you can't make someone like you. And on top of that, time spent hurling yourself at these immovable objects is time not spent on the things we can change. The recovery community practices something called the Serenity Prayer: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” Addicts cannot change the abuse suffered in childhood. They cannot undo the choices they have made or the hurt they have caused. But they can change the future—through the power they have in the present moment. As Epictetus said, they can control the choices they make right now. The same is true for us today. If we can focus on making clear what parts of our day are within our control and what parts are not, we will not only be happier, we will have a distinct advantage over other people who fail to realize they are fighting an unwinnable battle." - from the authors**I hope you are considering journaling along with us! in January __________________________________________________________________________Go to my WEBSITE "The Leftover Pieces; Rebuilding You" is support central.PS....The FIRST SESSION of the Legacy Writing Project in 2024 has finished & the last one is under way...GET ON THE LIST NOW for the SINGLE DATE start for 2025For a way to leave a Legacy of your child - GO HEREIf you, or someone you know, is struggling ww suicidal thoughts, reach out:CALL 988 OR, you can also TEXT the word "HOME" to 741Support the show

On this week's episode of In The Circle, we are joined by Elizabeth, who brings an incredibly powerful inquiry: How Can I Remain Spiritual During Troubling Times? So many people I speak with are feeling lost, sad, depressed, or despairing in the face of the world's difficulties. Of course, it doesn't help that we are attached to devices that inform us endlessly of other people's challenges. This inquiry gives us a moment to explore the Serenity Prayer: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” Through this, we can develop a strategy for managing the myriad of challenges that the people of the world are facing.Tommy discussesThe danger of the newsAccept the things you cannot changeWe are all spiritual beingsThere is more light than darkness in the worldLooking for a way to deepen your recovery journey and meet others in the Recovery 2.0 community? If you memorize one prayer all year, let it be this one! This simple yet profound prayer has saved me from myself and my struggles more than I can count. I hope this short episode blesses you! You are not alone, and I'm cheering for you. The Serenity Prayer: "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I can not change, The courage to change the things I can, And the wisdom to know the difference. Amen." Much love, Dani
Hi friend! If you've ever felt more anxious after praying or wrestled with thoughts like, "Why isn't prayer helping?!" and "Am I doing it wrong?" and so many others, today's episode is for you. I'm sharing a few thoughts about it all, as well as some very simple yet profound prayers that have changed the game for me when I'm struggling, especially with anxiety. I hope they help you, too. The prayers mentioned today: The Surrender Prayer: Jesus, I surrender myself to you. Take care of everything. Amen. The Lord's Prayer: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen. The Serenity Prayer: God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Amen. Dave Brown:Romans 8:18-22 NIVI consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Alison Myers:Matthew 26:36-39 NLTThen Jesus went with them to the olive grove called Gethsemane, and he said, “Sit here while I go over there to pray.” He took Peter and Zebedee's two sons, James and John, and he became anguished and distressed. He told them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” He went on a little farther and bowed with his face to the ground, praying, “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”Surrender became my pathway to peace. The Serenity Prayer“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”
Pam Blizzard from RecoveredPeace.com Lyschel Burket from HopeRedefined.org Bonny Burns from StrongWives.com Today, we are discussing the “work of recovery.” For ladies who have newly discovered their husbands' sexually problematic behavior, the idea that they can somehow heal from this intolerable devastation seems impossible. As they contemplate this, the question, “What is the work of recovery?” often comes up. We Discuss: 1, So, ladies, let's generally define, “The work of recovery,” concept. 2. Now, let's talk about what this work looks like in the days immediately following discovery. 3. What hope can we leave our listeners? The Serenity Prayer God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference, living one day at a time; enjoying one moment at a time; taking this world as it is and not as I would have it; trusting that You will make all things right if I surrender to Your will; so that I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with You forever in the next. Spirit Traveler, my beloved twin and much admired role model, comes on the podcast for an enlightening conversation about getting the lesson, giving thanks and keeping it moving! Topics include growing up in Detroit, day dreaming and cloud gazing; how she got her name; being sensitive and intuitive, finding support and mentorship to understand and develop her gifts; changing perspective about food and the energy and vibrations that come along with anything we consume or do; being the vessel. Spirit also shares about saying thank you for those who are responsible for who I am; pausing and giving thanks, being present, and giving back to community. “Each moment can be as good as you allow it to be.” “Remember to take the same medicine that you give others.” “Death is sad, though through understanding life's cycles, it is a blessing.” We talk about singing and tap dancing, and Spirit expresses her views on how being technical can stifle us from being fully self expressed. We can be mindful not to let the laws and rules restrict our full self expression, our art. We tend to fight against fear, guilt, shame, anger, sorrow. We tend to resist what we perceive as negativity or things we don't like, situations that create a change we feel may cause dis-ease or an undesirable outcome. This consumes so much energy and brain space, ruling our lives from a place of fear base beliefs. There is a slogan that states what we resist, persists. Creating a tug-a-war with our aversion to pain we call in yoga Dvesa, one of the mental emotional afflictions called the Kleshas. Peace comes when we can accept we have no power over people, places, things and situations we cannot change or control.Serenity Prayer: God grant me the serenityto accept the thing I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.Acceptance opens the door to learning. To approach practice with a beginners mind, to be open to receive what needs to be seen, experienced and felt, then to deeply understand in a supportive practice allowing the loving space you create to assist your growth. Life is always changing, there is always some new situation, person that brings stuff up in ourselves which becomes an opportunity to practice self-awareness (dissolving Avidya), understanding (dissolving Asmita) and then to gift ourselves a tender space to feel those old and new roots that get triggers we find an ability to accept (dissolving Dvesa) empowering ourselves to make wiser decisions to best navigate our lives with Grace. The Serenity Prayer is often said at 12-step meetings like Alcoholic Anonymous and even Codependent Anonymous. But it can challenging to enact, especially if you were caught in codependency's web as Brian was. Now that he has recognized and recovered from a lot of his codependent habits, he has a new understanding of and appreciation for it. GIVING THANKS EXCELLENTLY
When we are asked to just sit back and wait for others to move through their personal pathways of growth, and to just accept where they are at, even if it feels uncomfortable and sad for us, we are pushed. We are stretched. Some of us Type A personality types like to take action to make things happen. And often, it works. But in these situations when it comes to the free will of other people, actions do not always work. It's about vibration, energy, choice and soul contracts. This meditation brings in the energy of a loving saint, a person of the light who once walked the Earth, St. Francis of Assisi (who unexpectedly showed up!), with the vibration of gentle creatures like birds, chipmunks and rabbits to help us feel unconditional love for others, even when at a distance, and for ourselves. For support in learning soul lessons, allowing the free will and soul contracts of others to play out (invoking the Serenity Prayer - God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change) and to allow light to flow to others and to ourselves, check out my book, Tools for the Awakening Soul at https://www.soulfulworkconsulting.com/the-book or reach out for support in an individual session (Akashic Records, intuitive life coaching, hypnotherapy, etc) at https://www.soulfulworkconsulting.com/guidance-sessions, Blessings and gratitude for being here. ---- Merging the spiritual with the real world, Rachel Horton White helps people release negative patterns in their lives, with practical tools like mindfulness, energy and intuition exercises, to connect with their true, inner selves through this massive, planetary shift in consciousness. You're someone who holds yourself to ridiculously high standards, and there's a weird sort of pride in that. You're known for going the extra mile. It's helped to make you successful. What happens when the ideals that you hold yourself to become unsustainable? How do you reconcile the very human feelings that you're experiencing with the image of who you think you have to be? Today's guest is author and psychotherapist Anna Mathur. She has featured in the Daily Telegraph, Marie Claire, Stylist, Mother and Baby, and on BBC Radio 4's Women's Hour, amongst others. Her most recent book is The Little Book of Calm for Mums. We do touch on parenthood, but this episode is much wider. You'll learn about self-acceptance. It sounds so unsexy, I know. Sorry ‘bout that. AND I think you're really doing to dig Anna's take on this. You'll learn about the Fish Oil Burp Effect, a new term we coined — that alone is worth listening for. And you'll learn two tools that'll help if you struggle with the impeccable standards that you set for yourself. Anna's funny, relatable, and wise. Join us! Hello my friends! Ok, by popular demand—my Therapist Jim Beebe is back! If you are struggling with any difficult places in your life, Jim continues to unwrap this concept of acceptance and surrender. Not acceptance in the sense of 'approval' necessarily, but acceptance as a way of surrender and not fighting reality any more. Fighting reality is exhausting and reality only wins 100% of the time, I've been told. ;) Jim talks about how we are living in the ‘age of anxiety' and he dives into what he calls “the gap”—the gap between what we think our lives or specific situations ‘should be' and what they actually are—the gap is where hurt, disappointment, regret, sadness, resentment, bitterness, anxiety and everything else negative lives at times. Closing that gap IS possible and is magical as it happens. I'm seeing it happen in my own life. If we have been victimized in any way, our power was taken from us. Jim unpacks and explains how we get our power back, one day at a time. He mentions The Serenity Prayer: God grant me the serenity to accept the things I can not change The courage to change the things I can And the wisdom to know the difference. Other mentions: “Small hinges swing big doors.” Romans 7:15 “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.” “Acceptance and how we are talking about it, is not approval necessarily. But it's recognizing that the facts of reality are what they are. And fighting reality does not change reality.” More conversations with Jim: Episodes: 5. Episode 6. Link to Jim's article. We look into the future to try to determine what is going to happen to use personally and professionally but we always fall short and we get frustrated. When I was in therapy at Shatterproof I learned that I needed to live more in the moment. I learned how to cherish each moment. Cherish and be grateful for what was in my world at the moment. You see even if you are going through difficult times right now there is so much to be grateful for. Living in the moment and stepping back from the things we can't control will bring you more peace and happiness. I remember hearing the following prayer when I was growing up. It's called the Serenity Prayer: " God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know there difference." Go out and conquer your day, and live in the moment. Stay tuned for more great guests on The Top Ranked Criminal Justice Evolution Podcast. www.cjevolution.com Patrick

The Serenity Prayer: God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; the courage to change the things I can; and the wisdom to know the difference. Sandeep Maheshwari is a name among millions who struggled, failed and surged ahead in search of success, happiness and contentment. Just like any middle class guy, he too had a bunch of unclear dreams and a blurred vision of his goals in life. All he had was an undying learning attitude to hold on to. Rowing through ups and downs, it was time that taught him the true meaning of his life.
We've been praying The Serenity Prayer… “God, grant me the SERENITY to accept the things I cannot change. COURAGE to change the things I can. And WISDOM to know the difference.” Today we close our this series by looking at WISDOM in the Christmas story through this very special prayer.
Drop a tennis ball and it falls to the ground. It's called “gravity.” When the ball hits the ground it bounces. That's called “kinetic energy.”We don't fight these two things - it's simply the way things work.In this session, we're going to look at “acceptance” of the way things work in a broken, fallen world. We are wise to invite God to help us. Consider the first line in the Serenity Prayer - “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”Acceptance is a word from the wilderness, the desert, and fierce landscapes where we face the fact that we have no control.Acceptance is like 5 card stud poker. Stud not draw. We have to do the best we can with what we have! The orphan hordes and hides. The boy folds. The man plays ‘em as best he can and doesn't whine about it.Acceptance is coming to terms and not getting stuck in the debilitating, life draining tar pit of “Why me??? anger, and resentment. Sometimes life isn't fair. Tires go flat. Jobs relocate or get phased out. Illnesses strike. Sometimes things just happen. Sometimes it's due to the poor choices of others that trap us in the backwash.Acceptance is about those things we cannot change. The things we have prayed about and gotten a clear answer of ‘no' from God.Acceptance is a choice. Most often we need to drop into acceptance when we are consumed with being right or having a specific outcome -- namely, our own!Acceptance of the way things really are, not as we'd like them to be.Acceptance of your limits. Knowing what you have control over and what you don't.Acceptance of other people's opinions. Letting go of needing to be “right.”Acceptance can be defined as letting go of my opinion or my assessment of things and taking hold of what is true.Acceptance of me by God. “My heart began to thaw as I became open to His unconditional acceptance of me as I am, not as I should be. He loves me whether in a state of grace or disgrace, whether I live up to the lofty expectations of His gospel or I don't. He comes to me where I live and loves me as I am.” Brennan ManningWith acceptance, we trade good for great, angst for peace while everything inside seems to scream “NO!!!!!”Jesus tells the story of a Centurion, an officer in the Roman army. The officer asked Jesus for help with a sick soldier under his command. Here's how the conversation went...“Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed, suffering terribly.” Jesus said to him, “Shall I come and heal him?” The Centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,' and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,' and he does it.” Matthew 8:5-13 NIVThe Centurion understood and accepted how things work in the natural, physical world. For example, he understood the devastating effects of terminal illness and he understood the chain of command. But more importantly, the Centurion understood the power of prayer (making a request of Jesus) and placed his hope and faith in Jesus. And Jesus is never bound by or limited to the way things (normally) work! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
That life doesn't always play fair is an inevitable part of the human experience. One helpful way to navigate what is often a challenging road is captured by the Serenity Prayer: "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; Courage to change the things I can; And wisdom to know the difference." Trust that God will grant you the courage and wisdom to not just endure, but thrive even in the midst of things that are really hard. And one element of practicing this is to be kind and forgiving to self while extending love, mercy, and compassion to others. Yeah, life isn't fair but you can be, so go change your world! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Attributions: "Nuit Blanche" by Flitz&Suppe, B-Side, Mr. Käfer. https://flitzsuppe.bandcamp.com https://b-side3.bandcamp.com https://mrkaefer.bandcamp.com https://soundcloud.com/flitzsuppe https://soundcloud.com/bxside https://soundcloud.com/mrkaefer "thursday drive" from the album "The Color of Nothing (Reprise)" by ford. https://fordsounds.bandcamp.com https://soundcloud.com/ford "The Last One" from the album "Marty for President 2" by Marty. https://soundcloud.com/martyofficial --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/john-armstrong4/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-armstrong4/support

Is there anything, or anyONE, in your life that is making your life feel out of control? Are there worries keeping you up at night or stealing joy and happiness from the things you would like to be able to focus on or be more present with, but that worry in the back of your mind is just kind of always there, camped out, keeping you distracted or distraught? Today’s episode is just for you! We are going to teach you some life-changing concepts and guiding principles that have helped both Neil in his addiction and me in my journey with codependency. We’re going to help you – or anyone else who has worries and stresses as we all do – to identify what’s ours to control and when to let go. From that deep codependency that I lived in for so many years, I have hit rock bottom. And maybe that’s just what I needed so I could really feel that depth of despair and finally decide to not become a slave to my choices. At the end of the day, the best way to live is to live in control of yourself, and not of other people. Do what you know is best and that will bring you happiness and joy. In this episode, you will hear: The Serenity Prayer: "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference." It all comes down to trusting God and accepting that there is a higher purpose, higher plan, and an eternal perspective with whatever it is that's happening around us. There are all these different lies in addiction so the wisdom to know the difference, or to see the self-deception, to see the truth from error, or to see when you're lying to yourself is totally key and it takes time. Having that connection with God through the Spirit can help you differentiate and have the wisdom to know the difference between truth and error – right and wrong. The concept of touching your nose is to remind yourself that you are only in charge of yourself, and not of other people. Worrying doesn’t help solve your problems. Whenever you attach to someone or something, you lose control. And you forfeit your ability to think, feel, act, and take care of yourself. How Neil became codependent his own way and how it built a lot of frustration and resentment which led to him acting out more on his addiction How my happiness was so tied up in Neil's happiness and how working my own 12-step program has helped me to surrender things out of my control Surrender or detachment is not a one-time event. It's an everyday decision, an art, and a way of life. "You need to detach most when it seems like the least likely or possible thing to do." – the COVID situation is the best example of this. The 12-step is a step-by-step program. Whatever step you're on, don't look beyond that step. And you have to be willing to do each step. When we attempt to control people and things that we have no business controlling, we are controlled. Jesus is the perfect example of not trying to control others. In this message Ps Jacques unpacks the very well known Serenity Prayer: ‘God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, and Wisdom to know the difference.'
Often times when we walk through great loss or change, we cannot go back to how life was before. So now here in the ashes, we must grieve, forgive, heal, and rebuild. I hope in sharing more of my story (a continuation here from Episode 1) and the stories of others, you will hear that healing is possible. Rebuilding is possible. And hope is possible again. In this episode: Serenity Prayer- "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time, enjoying one moment at a time; accepting hardship as a pathway to peace; taking, as Jesus did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; trusting that You will make all things right if I surrender to Your will; so that I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with You forever in the next. Amen." (Reinhold Niebuhr) Connect with Heather Lobe Johnson for prayer or more daily encouragement on Instagram (@heatherlobejohnson).
How often do you find yourself living in the future? Are you living your life in the past or the future? How often can you live in the present moment? We are not taught to live in the present. The only thing we have is the present moment and to think we have control over the future or over another is an illusion. It gives one a false sense of power/control. We often feel that we need to have a sense of control, when we are in fear. Fear is the underpinning of the need to be in control. When we feel in lack, we also feel the need to control. When we are able to look at our masks and take the risk to peel back the masks even a little bit, we have the opportunity to feel lighter and feel more expansive. We can peel back and heal layers of ourselves. A perfect reminder of what we actually have control over is the Serenity Prayer: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” “Radical acceptance rests on letting go of the illusion of control and a willingness to notice and accept things as they are right now, without judging.” ~ Marsha Linehan To Contact Us: Email: podcastmasksoff@gmail.com Masks Off YouTube Channel: https://youtube.com/channel/UCaWJfO7ZFd4aYBX3e-clj9Q Tia Fagan Website: tiafagan.com Facebook: @tiafagancoach Instagram: @tiafagancoach Email: tiafagancoach@gmail.com Kim Gross Website: unlock-yourmind.com Facebook: @unlockyourmindhypnotherapy Email: kimgross@unlock-yourmind.com Episode 12
In the 81st Chapter of the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu describes how a life filled with giving is the most fulfilling. How do I learn to give? By being Empty – empty of our rules, the desire to know, the need to control, ambition, and forcing our needs on others are just a few ways of being empty. We also hear lots of ways of giving other than monetary. One of the most difficult is giving others the right to their opinions. Great Discussion! Emptiness version of the Serenity Prayer God grant us the emptiness to accept what we cannot change, the emptiness to change what we can, and the emptiness to know the difference. This episode is a celebration albeit a somber celebration. At the time of the release of this episode on March 25, 2020 we are 14 days into the Coronavirus or COVID-19 being declared a pandemic. The information we are getting from the news is startling, especially as we are all coming to grips with the fact that this isn’t going to pass in just 2-4 weeks, like we may have originally hoped. Things are very uncertain but we cannot stop doing the very things that continue to develop us and remind us of our humanity and our connection to one another. Let’s do some celebrating, then I’ve got some information that may help you get through the coming months. The Celebration The Women Taking the Lead podcast is 5 years old! The official launch date of Women Taking the Lead was March, 25 2015. Here are some numbers for you. Most podcast don’t go beyond 10 episodes and it’s uncommon to make it to 100 episodes. This episode is the 385th episode of Women Taking the Lead. There have been over 687,000 downloads in 176 different countries. We are only 313,000 away from hitting one million downloads. Those numbers are amazing and I want to be clear that what this represents to me is community. And you, my community, while you have been listening to this podcast and sharing your thoughts and ideas, I‘ve been listening to you. Many of the best ideas I’ve gotten for this podcast and my business have come from you. I cannot thank you enough. Thank you for your feedback, thank you for sharing this podcast with your friends, family and colleagues and thank you for listening! The Elephant in the Room While I will continue to celebrate and feel all the good feelings that come with hitting this milestone, it would not be an episode of Women Taking the Lead if I didn’t address the elephant in the room You are under a lot of stress right now and could probably use some support. Being a high achiever, that’s probably hard for you to come to grips with – unless you’ve already had a meltdown. In which case, you can no longer hide or deny you need help. I want to offer you some support by giving you some tips on dealing with the uncertainty and the changes that you are taking on to keep our most vulnerable loved ones safe. We joke, and I’ve seen several memes on social media, about all we have to do is stay home. And yes, what we need to do or not do is easy to understand and execute but it is going to take a toll on you. And for those of you who are leaders, it’s going to be even more important for you to take care of yourself, because you need to continue to show up and communicate with your people. They need your direction, your empathy and your steadfastness now more than ever. You must, you must, you must take care of yourself and your mindset to deliver on this. The thing that steals most of your focus and energy is the mental stress of being out of a normal routine, and dealing with uncertainty and bad news. How you mitigate stress is by changing your perspective, or the focus of your attention. If you are struggling with all the uncertainty and have not yet read Viktor Frankl’s book, Man’s Search for Meaning, now is the time to do it. You don’t have to walk into a store or wait for a delivery. You can download it on your Kindle reader or buy the audiobook. If you have read Man’s Search for Meaning now may be the time to review it. Man’s Search for Meaning is Viktor Frankl’s memoirs of his life during the Holocaust. He had survived, having spent three years in four different concentration camps. He noticed that those who were most likely to survive were those who could find some meaning in the experience. Frankl believes meaning can be found through creativity and work, human interaction and experiences, and the manner in which we respond to suffering. Many survivors of the holocaust had coped with their experience by reminding themselves they didn’t want to disappoint relatives who were dead or separated from them, by helping others or, as Viktor Frankl did, to try to find the beauty in his environment. If you feel guilty because you are trying to find positives in the devastation, I want you to let the guilt go because, it’s okay to do that. It’s what is getting you through this and it’s a good thing. I know you also see the reality; you’re not ignoring it. What you are doing is preventing yourself from being mentally and emotionally disabled by it. You won’t be good to anyone if you are constantly watching the news, getting overwhelmed by all you see, and becoming too fatigued to cope. It feels like doom and gloom but we are also seeing and hearing about people who are stepping up to help their neighbors and communities to address the challenges. I’ve seen businesses come up with creative ways to stay open and continue to provide services. I think this is why Kitty O’Meara’s poem has struck a chord with so many of us. It’s unlikely you haven’t read it somewhere by now but for those of you who haven’t heard this poem yet… And the People Stayed Home By Kitty O'Meara And the people stayed home. And read books, and listened, and rested, and exercised, and made art, and played games, and learned new ways of being, and were still. And listened more deeply. Some meditated, some prayed, some danced. Some met their shadows. And the people began to think differently. And the people healed. And, in the absence of people living in ignorant, dangerous, mindless, and heartless ways, the earth began to heal. And when the danger passed, and the people joined together again, they grieved their losses, and made new choices, and dreamed new images, and created new ways to live and heal the earth fully, as they had been healed. It’s okay to recognize the positives. This is how we take advantage of opportunities. Adopting a woe-is-me attitude so as to not offend other people will not help anyone. Be sensitive to what other people are going through and recognize there are good things happening all over the world and you can be a part of it. I am continuing to get new clients. I have passed 3 referrals to other business owners in the past few days that will turn into business. Yes, we are already seeing an economic downturn and it will have consequences but we will get through this and we will recover. We’ll do this together. When things are turbulent, having a coach can make a difference. There’s no shame in getting extra support and accountability so that you are thriving in such a difficult time. I’m seeing too many leaders who are struggling, not asking for help, and it’s having a detrimental effect on those around them. Don’t hesitate to reach out to me if this sounds like a good option for you. I’m here to support you if you want the support. In times like these, when so many things feel out of our control, and they are, I lean into the Serenity Prayer. Stress comes when we either deny the power we have in a situation, and render ourselves victims to our circumstances, or we try to assert power we don’t have, which only causes us frustration. To bottom-line it, stress will typically come from one of two things: We fool ourselves into thinking we have no control in certain situations when we do. We always have control over our attitude, our actions, and our voice. Or, we try to control things we have no control over – like other people’s attitudes, actions, or words. In the situation of the COVID-19 pandemic, you can follow the CDC guidelines on hygiene and social distancing. You can shop for your elderly or medically vulnerable neighbors. You can buy gift cards from your local establishments. You can reach out to family and friends to see how they are doing. You can think about developing new streams of income. You can get 30 minutes of exercise in each day. The list could go on and on. Find what you have control over and take action. That will relieve stress and refuel your energy stores. Alternatively, let go of trying to control things you don’t have control over. You can make sure the people you know are informed on proper protocols, and pass along tips for self-care, but you can’t force them to adopt them. And let me be clear, if you are getting upset it is because you are frustrated that you cannot control their behavior. What you can do is bless them, pray for them, and do what you need to do to take care of yourself. As long as you have done what is in your power to do, for your own sanity you need to make peace with the rest. Here’s the Serenity Prayer to help you with that. Serenity Prayer God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; Enjoying one moment at a time; Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will; That I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him Forever in the next. Amen. I’m struck by the line in that prayer that reads, “Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it.” Now, it is my own belief that the world is not sinful, it is mistaken – but let’s not get tripped up by that word. If you read the line without the word “sinful” it reads: “Taking, as He did, this world as it is, not as I would have it.” The world is what it is. This is the world we’ve got. Railing against the fact that it should be different doesn’t do you any good. Taking action to make positive changes, that is completely in your power. But you have to first accept that the world is the way it is before you can make a meaningful difference. That means first seeing things factually, unemotionally, and without judgment. The world is neither good nor bad, right nor wrong. It is what it is. Now, from this non-judgmental perspective ask yourself, “What would I like to infuse into the world?” At the end of each episode I send you off with a Marianne Williamson quote with a little jingle playing in the background. Today it feels appropriate to just read it for you now. Our Deepest Fear By Marianne Williamson Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness That most frightens us. We ask ourselves Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small Does not serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking So that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, As children do. We were born to make manifest The glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; It's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, We unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we're liberated from our own fear, Our presence automatically liberates others. Thank you for making this 5-year journey so joyful and memorable. We are in this together. Here’s to Our success! Cheers! Today's topic is learning what you can control because we somehow we believe we can control a situation or other people or even ourselves. Jersey Ed’s Podcast Pick of the Week: Coaching through ChaosHost Dr. Colleen Mullen offers inspiring and motivating stories about relationships, finance, stress, conflict resolution, healthy living, addiction recovery, health and fitness, money management, success coaching and veteran projects. https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/coaching-through-chaos-podcast Let’s start with the AA Preamble: Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for A.A. membership; we are selfs supporting through our own contributions. A.A. is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety. AA’s 12-Step approach follows a set of guidelines designed as “steps” toward recovery, and members can revisit these steps at any time. The 12 Steps are:9 1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable.2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs. Your Higher Power does not need to be “God,” as defined by someone else. It works if you work it. The program is not based on intelligence, it’s based on heart. The benefits you reap will come from the effort you put in. In a meeting, it’s okay to be yourself. It’s okay not to be okay - and you don’t need to feel guilt or shame because of it. Serenity Prayer:God, grant me the serenityto accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can,and the wisdom to know the difference. ---------- The Friends in Recovery Podcast is brought to you by Genesis House Recovery (800-737-0933) and produced by Sweets Productions in Beverly, Massachusetts. Salt Lake City Real Careers and Training Estate Podcast with Joshua Stern
Someone once asked Abraham Lincoln what he would do if he had eight hours to chop down a tree. His response? “I’d spend six hours sharpening my ax.” For the last tactic of our “Shift” series, we’ll talk about bulletproofing the transaction. When it comes to real estate, being forewarned means being forearmed. We must educate our clients and tell buyers and sellers what to expect—it keeps the drama out of the transaction. With that in mind, here are the specific transaction issues you need to bulletproof: Inspections and appraisal repairs. Things can go wrong during inspections, whether it be unexpected findings, inspection report complexities, confusion about who pays for what, etc. There are also repair timetables and potential doubts about the home’s worthiness to consider. That’s why we focus on setting up expectations up front for buyers and sellers. Oftentimes, we’ll have our sellers have their homes pre-inspected before listing, and it might be a good idea to attend the pre-inspection with the buyer or seller. Also, we always help select and supervise the vendors based on track record and quality, and we reassure buyers throughout the process. When it comes to appraisals, they can sometimes be an issue in downward-trending markets when they don’t support the home’s contract price or loan type. The condition of the home can present issues, too. In these cases, you want to provide as much information as possible to the appraiser up front. You also want to help buyers find additional funds to close on the loan and negotiate with the seller and the lender for funds. You can always ask for an appeal if the appraisal doesn’t match your valuation. Loan approvals and funding. Potential issues here include credit issues, delays in application, documentation problems, and the lender’s failure to approve and fund. To stay ahead of these issues, select an originator who will get the buyer through the full underwriting process prior to home shopping. You can also offer to assist buyers with paperwork or refer them to a credit counselor and then have them reapply or do a parallel loan application. “The bottom line is, successful people know how to shift.”In terms of buyer credit issues, there are seven don’ts of mortgage funding that you should educate your buyers on up front and throughout the home purchase: Don’t change employment status Don’t make any major purchases Don’t increase credit card debt or miss any payments Don’t change bank accounts or make undisclosed large deposits Don’t apply for a credit card, cosign on a loan, or make any credit inquiries Don’t spend money you’ve set aside for closing Don’t delay providing all necessary paperwork Other contingencies (the sale of the buyer’s house, getting third-party approvals on short sales or distressed properties, etc.). In this case, you want to take backup offers on your listings and know who to communicate with during complex transactions. Also, be sure to get preliminary title reports on your listings and read them before going on the market. Co-op agents. We hear plenty of complaints about co-op agents, but let’s do our best to keep our own egos out of the negotiations and assume that these agents are less educated about the market. They may be unintentionally giving bad advice due to poor communication, or they’re making bad vendor selections. In any case, you can stay ahead of this by clarifying your clients’ intentions. Own the process and deliver sound communication throughout. Deadlines. You might have tight inspection or repair deadlines, or the selected closing date won’t work. We often see occupancy issues with taking possession and delayed approval because of delayed documentation being delivered by the buyer to the lender. In these cases, be sure to confirm appraisal and inspection appointments and follow up on their progress. Build in some buyer and seller flexibility up front, prepare them for any common delay issues, and manage your closing checklist. Being proactive in the transaction will help everyone focus on the positive. Also, keep your clients intentional and flexible, and make sure you keep all players in the transaction accountable. Be a problem-solver and be customer-centric in handling whatever goes wrong. That wraps up our “Shift” series and the various tactics millionaire agents use to thrive in a shifting market. The bottom line is, successful people know how to shift. You can’t do all things at once, so focus on what’s important first. Remember that we “fail” our way to success, and keep in mind the words of the Serenity Prayer: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” As always, if you have any questions for us about your continued success in a shifting market or about today’s topic, please let us know. You know what inadequacy and cowardice sound like? People pissing and moaning about things they can’t control or influence while paying scant attention to the shit they CAN control. Cowardice? Sure. Because by blaming external events and forces you pathetically let yourself off the hook for taking control of your own destiny (and if that’s YOU, then we’ll never get along). It may come as a surprise to discover I’m not a religious man, but, apart from the first word, I do like this snippet from the Serenity Prayer: God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference Makes a lot of sense once you take the mythical, bloodthirsty, misogynistic, and kiddy-fiddler-loving deity out of it. But there’s more to it than that – watch the vid, and I’ll share it with you. Then click the link - growyourbusinessfast.co.uk/ground-zero/
When the going gets tough, find serenity in change. A calm that surpasses all understanding. Sometimes it's not about the change, but the wisdom of deciphering what you control. Don't beat yourself up when you fail at every turn. You might even be extremely focused on what you really want to change, that anything different than what you want only upsets your peace. Desire to be supported and encourage by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACT. http://facebook.com/groups/thewomenofimpact As actions and habits are uprooted, keep your focus on what you can control. Nothing is impossible. So change is possible. I was doing a little research on a very familiar prayer, The Serenity Prayer. And I discovered that it was written by an American Theologian Karl Paul Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971). It was popularized by Alcoholics Anonymous. The Serenity Prayer God grant me the serenity To accept the things I cannot change; Courage to change the things I can; And wisdom to know the difference. You are loved where you are. And yes, you can make a change. But you are not loved more or less when it comes to that change. Rest in the loving arms of the peace that surpasses all understanding. Find your serenity! The K.I.S.S. ~ Find serenity in change! “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” ~ Philippians 4:6 Change is not easy. But what you control is well known. Take the wisdom you have and accept what can be change, and those things that cannot. Don't get wrapped up in the little petty stuff that is only holding you back. Smile bigger, because you know what you control. You got this! Accept the hardships, because it's part of the journey. And direct your heart and mind to the one who can change anything; God, Himself. Background on Jonny Since discovering travel hacking over a year ago, we have become OBSESSED with learning everything we possibly can about earning and redeeming miles & points for upgraded VIP travel. Over the course of just 12 months, we collected over one million points without ever stepping foot on a plane or checking into a hotel. We recently returned home from Europe on a Lufthansa flight in business class. Our seats were located in the upper deck of a Boeing 747-8. Complete with champagne, gourmet meals and lie-flat seats. Our out-of-pocket cost for this flight was just $120 in taxes and fees per person. Pretty amazing, right? In addition, while in Paris for four nights, we stayed on the 33rd floor of a beautiful hotel that offered a breathtaking view of the Eiffel Tower from the window of our room. We also had complimentary breakfast, snacks all day long and hors d’ouerves, wine and beer each evening. Total out of pocket cost for all four nights? $25 for taxes and fees. That’s it. Seriously. Podcast episode: Refrigerator Magnets Hello there! In this episode, ‘Refrigerator Magnets’, I talk about my recent trip to Switzerland, the magnets and postcards I bought; and how I recognized the places I’ve been just by looking at the magnets on my fridge. In the Book of Proverbs, in the Holy Bible, there is a verse that says “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” In other words, we can make all the plans we want to, but God has his own plans for us. We plan our lives, our vacations, our jobs, etc. But what happens when those plans do not happen? We can either stop, and sit out our lives in dismay, or we can continue on the path we have been set on. Either way, life is happening. And before we know it, we are a certain age and we have lived lives of sadness or bitterness because our lives did not happen the way we expected. But when we look at our refrigerators and see pictures of family members, grocery list reminders, or encouraging words. We see funny magnets we have picked up along the way, or magnets depicting places we have been. We realize life was indeed happening anyway. We may as well take an active part, accepting what we must, changing what we can, and knowing the difference. Sounds like a familiar saying? It’s a form of the Serenity Prayer: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, And wisdom to know the difference.” -- American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr (1892–1971). I truly believe there is great wisdom in knowing the difference. In knowing when to change course. In taking part in our own life, even when that life looks nothing like we planned. Sermon Synopsis: Trusting God in the “All Things” of Life Romans 8:26-39 July 27, 2008 What does it take for a believer to trust God no matter what happens? Answer: Faith, yes but in this context Paul wants you to answer Spirit. It takes the Spirit of Christ in the believer to give life to faith in the “all things” of life. Jesus said the kingdom is like yeast in flour. In time it will be apparent that the little yeast within the flour will make a big difference in the outcome. Life of the Spirit of Christ in believers is made apparent in “all things.” Serenity Prayer: God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference. Scriptural References (NIV): Romans 7:24-25a; 8:1-2, 9, 12, 26-39; Matthew 13:31-33.
