Against the Carceral Archive: The Art of Black Liberatory Practice (Fordham UP, 2023) is a meditation upon what author Damien M. Sojoyner calls the “carceral archival project,” offering a distillation of critical, theoretical, and activist work of prison abolitionists over the past three decades. Working from collections at the Southern California Library (Black Panthers, LA Chapter; the Coalition Against Police Abuse; Urban Policy Research Institute; Mothers Reclaiming Our Children; and the collection of geographer Clyde Woods), it builds upon theories of the archive to examine carcerality as the dominant mode of state governance over Black populations in the United States since the 1960s. Each chapter takes up an element of the carceral archive and its destabilization, destruction, and containment of Black life: its notion of the human and the production of “pejorative blackness,” the intimate connection between police and military in the protection of racial capitalism and its fossil fuel–based economy, the role of technology in counterintelligence, and counterinsurgency logics. Importantly, each chapter also emphasizes the carceral archive's fundamental failure to destroy “Black communal logics” and radical Black forms of knowledge production, both of which contest the carceral archive and create other forms of life in its midst. Concluding with a statement on the reckoning with the radical traditions of thought and being which liberation requires, Sojoyner offers a compelling argument for how the centering of Blackness enables a structuring of the mind that refuses the violent exploitative tendencies of Western epistemological traditions as viable life-affirming practices. Jen Hoyer is Technical Services and Electronic Resources Librarian at CUNY New York City College of Technology. Jen edits for Partnership Journal and organizes with the TPS Collective. Welcome to another exciting edition of my weekly vlog! In this episode, I'm thrilled to share with you the latest updates on my website revamp and the progress I've made on "The Arbiters," my ambitious animated film project. We'll delve into two key takeaways from my work on the project's outline, exploring the challenges of crafting a captivating ending and the creative solutions I've uncovered along the way. But that's just the beginning of this eventful week. Join me as I take you on a journey through a wide array of experiences that range from in-person podcast recordings to my fascinating role as a videographer for The Recording Academy. I had the pleasure of capturing a discussion on tech and musicians with the LA Chapter, a delightful departure from my usual artistic circles. The event was both informative and enjoyable, offering insights into the world of music and technology. Additionally, I'd like to share my involvement as a board member of the Financially Fit Foundation, an organization dedicated to imparting financial literacy and techniques to individuals. Leveraging my video production skills, I've been diligently working on packaging our seminars into video lessons. This ongoing project, while demanding, has been incredibly rewarding, as it promises to make a significant impact on people's lives. To learn more about the Financially Fit Foundation, visit financiallyfitfoundation.org. Amid the hustle and bustle, I've found precious moments to update my Patreon page (http://patreon.com/philsvitek). Your support and engagement mean the world to me, and I encourage you to check it out. On a heartfelt note, I continue my mission to find a forever home for Diamond, my wonderful German Shepherd mix foster dog. I've been tirelessly training her and reaching out to every possible network to find her a loving home. If you can help in any way, it would be greatly appreciated. You can watch a video about Diamond here: https://youtu.be/fMZS0hYAb7Y. As the upcoming week promises to be less hectic, I'm eager to channel my energy into completing my website and tackling two video projects that have been patiently waiting for my attention. Despite my usual preference to finish one project before starting another, these two videos hold the promise of significant strides in my creative journey. I'll begin with a sizzle reel for myself that's been on the backburner for far too long. Following that, I'll wrap up the editing of a parody film school video that I filmed last October. In the meantime, I'll continue outlining "The Arbiters," allowing some time away to ponder solutions for the final act of the story. Speaking of "The Arbiters," last week, I mentioned my quest to find innovative ways to film people speaking in different languages with real-time translation. Well, it seems I've stumbled upon a promising solution: Heygen AI. Furthermore, I dive into the broader conversation about AI in art. I recognize that many artists have concerns about AI drawing from existing works, and I address this issue directly. It's essential to acknowledge that all works of art, to some extent, incorporate elements from others. I provide examples from the film industry, illustrating how even renowned filmmakers often borrow concepts from previous works. Shifting gears, I touch upon the recent news of the WGA reaching a tentative agreement. I express my thoughts on the "Streaming Data Transparency" deal point, emphasizing the need for full transparency rather than mere confidentiality in the streaming industry. It's time to openly acknowledge the challenges faced by streaming platforms and work collectively to find solutions. On a lighter note, I fulfill a long-standing item on my bucket list by attending a Tiesto concert. Lastly, I address a significant and pressing issue in our nation's political landscape – aging out of politics.

Today we are joined by two highly-influential music creators’ rights advocates. Kris Ahrend began his career in the music industry working in the Law Department at Sony Music, where he provided legal services to all of Sony’s US divisions, including its publishing company. He subsequently worked in the business and legal affairs department at Sony BMG Music Entertainment before accepting a senior executive role at Rhino Entertainment. Kris Ahrend now serves as Chief Executive Officer for The MLC, where he leads the organization’s mission to ensure songwriters, composers, lyricists, and music publishers receive their mechanical royalties from streaming and download services in the U.S. accurately and on time. Most recently, Ahrend led the development and launch of Warner Music Group’s Center of Excellence for Shared Services in Nashville, where he oversaw the operations of fifteen different functional teams providing a variety of administrative, financial, and legal services to Warner Music’s U.S.- based publishing teams, record labels, and corporate divisions. Michelle Lewis is an award-winning songwriter, composer, singer and music creators’ rights advocate. From her early career as a recording artist signed to Irving Azoff’s Giant Records, to her first radio hit, Cher’s “A Different Kind of Love Song” in 2002, to the 2014 worldwide #1 single “Wings” by the British girl group Little Mix, Ms. Lewis brings authenticity, musicality, and heart to a diverse range of pop music. In 2015, Michelle Lewis co-founded the non-profit advocacy organization, Songwriters Of North America (SONA) in response to the ever-increasing complexities and inequities in digital royalties paid to songwriters and composers. Through her roles as SONA’s Executive Director, on the ASCAP Board of Directors, as an LA Chapter board member of the Recording Academy and on the Executive Committee of the Music Peer Group for the Television Academy, Michelle is solidly situated on the leading edge of issues facing songwriters: the ongoing fight to make streaming royalty rates more fair to creators, education and empowerment of creators through metadata, the implementation and utilization of the new Mechanical Licensing Collective, and fighting for songwriters to get healthcare and workplace safety standards in place. And The Executive are… Kris Ahrend and Michelle Lewis! In this episode, Elias Arjan and I talk about the new edition of the Biostrap, the BiostrapEVO. I’ve now been using Biostrap EVO for over a month and I have to say I’m pretty impressed with the quality of the data I am getting.    The BiostrapEVO along with the Shoe pod and external Heart Rate Monitor together provide one of the most advanced wearable health, activity and sleep-tracking devices on the market. The Biostrap EVO enables you to get deeper insights about your body at various points in time by providing clinical-grade data. I’m really impressed with the detailed and highly accurate data readings, exercise tracking, and recovery recommendations based on exercise, exertion, sleep quality and recovery. Another great feature of Biostrap is the heart rate monitor that provides heart rate variability, blood oxygen saturation and respiratory rate monitoring. With the upcoming release of the Heart Lab - a new feature, Biostrap EVO customers will also be able to assess and track a relatively new metric: arterial age.   Listen in to the episode and discover the powerful pros of Biostrap that health hackers find game-changing. Tameka Kee has spent the last decade connecting the dots of technology, media, and marketing. Currently the Vice President of Content & Strategy at Wise Public Relations, she joins us today to talk about some common misconceptions of virtual reality, where we are now with the technology, what she sees emerging in the coming years, and how it is changing in both consumer and enterprise markets. She also talks about successful moments in integrating sponsors into events, and lessons she is learning now as she begins to produce events in the VR/AR universe.   Takeaways: [3:25] Tameka is also the head of the LA Chapter for the VR/AR association, an industry trade group dedicated to advance and connect digital technology experts and enthusiasts. [6:19] VR is on a continuum of how immersive an experience it is, and Tameka sees the Oculus Quest as a game changer on the consumer front. [10:11] In the enterprise, VR is changing how companies do HR training that requires empathy and compassion, as the sensory-motor activity makes participants really feel like they are there in real time. [12:05] In medicine, there are a lot of VR and AR companies creating ways to make surgery better, and help doctors perform at super in-depth performance standards. [17:40] Tameka comes from a journalistic background and remained a champion for integrity and information even when she shifted to working in an event and sponsorship space. She hasn’t won every battle, but most times finds that audiences and events align with high-value content. [29:30] Part of the challenge with events in digital marketing is sponsors want to be thought leadership sponsors, when other opportunities may make for a more authentic and trustworthy integration. [37:37] Digital marketers can benefit in looking at events from other industries to get inspiration. [40:41] As much as the advertising and digital industry changes, relationships and networking still are at the forefront of long-lasting and consistently attended events. [42:11] As both an event producer and programmer, Tameka sees there are many aspects to consider such as name recognition, content, and financial contribution. [47:28] Tameka loves events due to her natural curiosity, love of seeing what’s coming up, and interacting with the leaders of the present day and the future. [56:14] It takes effort to find good speakers and organize an agenda and book a venue; oftentimes, people underestimate the responsibility of an events planner. [62:36] Tameka explains The Influx Lab, and the upcoming event on December 1 to discuss the conversation about all aspects of mixed reality. [70:11] TMI Podcast PSA: If you gave a TEDx Talk, please don’t weave it into every conversation that you have for the rest of your life. On this album, I believe I’ve worked with some of the finest session musicians in the world including Tony Levin, Jeff Haynes, Eugene Friesen and legendary Producer and guitarist Will Ackerman (Founder, Windham Hill Records), who says: “One of the brightest lights in contemporary instrumental music, Fiona Joy is poised to move into stardom.” - Will Ackerman, Founder of Windham Hill Records Australian Pianist, Producer & Singer Fiona Joy is enjoying the success of her recent release Signature Synchronicity after returning from her third major tour of China, recording a new album in the US, and featuring in several Australian concerts with her Blue Dream Ensemble at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre and the Sydney Women's International Jazz Festival. In China Fiona Joy is nick-named The Piano Angel, not just for her romantic, melodic songs and lush arrangements, but also for her gracious and mesmerizingly ballet-like performance style in concert. A prolific composer, she has always been interested in creating music that evokes images, emotions and stories. The album so far has won two catetories in the Independent Music Awards, a Finalist in the International Acoustic Music Awards, Hollywood Music in Media Awards and the USA Songwriting Competition. Her recording schedule for 2017 includes Blue Coast Records solo piano release (SACD/CD/DSD) Into the Mist and FLOW - the debut album by Fiona Joy, Lawrence Blatt, Jeff Oster & Will Ackerman. FLOW will be a groundbreaking release by a New Age group fof successful artists inspired by the iconic music of Windham Hill. It follows that her upbringing was filled with music. She recalls that her father embraced Andrew Lloyd Webber's music, playing Jesus in the Tamworth Musical Society production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Her classical piano training is evident in her thematic and melodic compositions. Ravel's “Bolero” emerged as an early influence, she says, adding, "I loved it, I played it over and over and deconstructed every part. George Winston, Prokofiev and Mendelssohn also intrigued me.” In 2015 Fiona contributed to a GRAMMY-winning album and traversed three continents, performing solo on a grand tour of China, entertaining in the U.S. at the ZMR Awards and at the audiophile Mecca, T.H.E. Show, closing out the year in Australia at the Sydney Women's International Jazz Festival with her renowned Blue Dream Ensemble. Once home, she attracted the national TV show ‘Lateline’, which ran a feature lifestyle piece on her life and music. (https://youtu.be/6RCTtmkwdSI) In 2014, a version of Fiona’s song “Grace” was chosen for a GRAMMY®-winning album that also reached #1 on the Billboard charts, and in 2013, her evocative piano and ethereal vocals earned her the global broadcaster’s choice and honor as the Best Instrumental Piano Album for600 Years in a Moment at the ZMR Awards, whose airplay charts she also graced at #1 for several months with Signature Solo. Fiona Joy also placed as Runner Up for Best Instrumental Song in the International Acoustic Music Awards, nominated alongside Pete Seeger for Best LIVE Performance Album in the Independent Music Awards, and she was an ARIA Finalist in Australia in 2008. As a forward-looking artist, Fiona is interested in pioneering new musical concepts and recording techniques to better serve her highly-interactive fan base. She frequently appears at audiophile conferences, and is signed to Blue Coast Records for high-fidelity recordings; owner/producer Cookie Marenco is considered and leader in the field, partnering with Sony Music to deliver hi-resolution music to discerning audiophile consumers. Marenco says, "Fiona's melodic solo piano and masterful performances are the perfect music to debut the kind of clarity double DSD audio brings to the home listener.  Her music is a cross of George Winston's simple melodies and Ludovico Einaudi's musical sophistication." Fiona's hard work and conceptual vision for the Signature Series is now coming to fruition in Signature Synchronicity, produced in collaboration with Will Ackerman's team in full orchestral form. Ackerman, founder of both Windham Hill Records and Imaginary Road Studios, embraced and encouraged Fiona’s music years ago, stating, “Fiona’s Blue Dream album was the most ambitious project of my entire career and resulted in one of the most remarkable collaborations this genre has ever known. Blue Dream is unique and I’m as proud of it as anything I’ve ever worked on in my 35-year career of GRAMMY® Awards and Gold/Platinum records.”  As a collaborator, Fiona has worked with Will Ackerman, Lawrence Blatt, T-Bone Wolk (Hall & Oates), Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel, Dire Straits), Jeff Haynes (Pat Metheny), Eugene Friesen (Paul Winter Consort), Heather Rankin, Charlie Bisharat (Shadowfax), Rebecca Daniel (ACO), Jeff Oster and many others. In 2014, she and Ackerman co-produced the successful debut album of Jennifer DeFrayne, who won Best New Artist in the 2015 ZMR Awards for her album By A Wire. Music writer Michael Diamond, recently reviewed one of Fiona’s live concerts in the U.S., writing “What I appreciated most was being able to listen and watch Fiona at the piano. The passion and elegance in her performance was breathtaking, as her flawless technique combined with pure emotional expression.”  When not recording or touring, Fiona is busy directing the entrepreneurial side of her music business, an effort which is crucial to the success of every independent artist. She manages her growing record label, Little Hartley Music, and promotes Fiona Joy Jewellery, her new line offering the upscale Swarovsky crystal-adorned bracelets and foot jewellery that she wears while performing barefooted in concert. When not on the road, Fiona escapes to her peaceful home in a small rural village in Australia.
