Years ago we used to do a segment called Write-a-Tune Tuesday where we brought in local artists to write songs based on listener suggestions. One of those artists was Anna Vaus, who just happens to be the daughter of Poway mayor Steve Vaus. Since then Anna has moved to Nashville and is killing it writing music for Maddie & Tae, Carly Pearce and Keith Urban. She just happened to be back in San Diego this week and joined us this morning at Soapy Joe's for a check-in. 

It's been a while since we spoke with Poway Mayor Steve Vaus who has been in that position for 10 years. We were so excited to see him at Soapy Joe's this morning to talk about his recent adventure on a cross-country Vespa trip! 

Last night I attended the Poway City Council meeting. I have lots to talk about including Poway banning homeless encampments, the replacement of Barry Leonard, money in politics, and Life Time Fitness at The Farm. Plus, we discuss Archie Moore, San Diego Roads, Steve Garvey for CA Senate, Ed Franklin, and more. We will take your comments and questions in the San Diego Community Forum. It's Wednesday June 7, 2023. Here's what John Riley thinks: Poway City Council Observations I hadn't been to a city council meeting in a while. It was great hearing some of the issues hashed out by both public speakers and elected officials. As a podcaster, it was special meeting some folks that listen or watch my show. Nice to make those human connections. Poway chooses to replace Barry Leonard with an Appointment/Election Hybrid Poway has a history of appointing people to council to fill out a person's term. I figured this was the route they would take in replacing resigning councilmember Barry Leonard. The public was overwhelmingly for an election. Steve Vaus proposed a hybrid model. They will appoint someone with a pledge they will not run in the November 2024 election. Money in Poway Politics California's new SB1439 bill requires that elected officials recuse themselves from voting on issues that involve a donor that gave over $250. But $250 is the campaign donation limit for Poway. Does that mean SB1439 is moot in Poway? Or do indirect funds to PACs and non-profits count too? Life Time Fitness Update at The Farm in Poway The Poway City Council says they cannot do anything since there is no formal proposal before them. That's true. But locals know the developer's plan is to put in a Life Time Fitness center that likely violates the voter's will with Measure P. Mayor Vaus says there is a lot of misinformation swirling in social media. Is JRP part of the problem? LOL Poway Bans Homeless Encampments San Diego implemented a rule that authorities can remove homeless encampments if there is a shelter bed nearby. Now Poway has enacted a similar rule. After all, the San Diego homeless could end up in Poway. Archie Moore, Any Body Can Youth Foundation What a great fundraiser hosted by the ABC Youth Foundation for troubled youth. I attended a very well run and safe youth boxing match at St. Augustine High School. Bravo to the athletes, families and organizers that made this event possible. San Diego Finally Repairing Roads in Rancho Bernardo, Westwood The Witch Creek Fire was in 2007 but the damage to the roads has still not been resolved. The reconstruction has been over for some time, but then authorities had trouble coming up with the $5M to fund this project in the Westwood community of Rancho Bernardo. Why is it so hard to get local government officials to focus on their primary tasks? Steve Garvey for CA Senate? Former Dodger and Padre, Steve Garvey, is flirting with the idea of running for US Senate as a Republican. After his career ended in 1987, he considered running for senate, but his flirting with extramarital affairs derailed his political future. These days that's no longer a disqualifier. Amit Asaravala is the President of the Poway Democratic Club. Amit joined me to discuss the tremendous surge of money in Poway politics, the changing voting demographics in Poway, and information on their endorsed candidates. Poway Campaign Finance The financial data was the most eye-opening. Individual people can donate up to $250 for a specific candidate. Amit Asaravala shared that even on the individual level, Poway candidate Brian Pepin has raised approximately $70,000. This is far greater than the typical $10,000 to $15,000 we would see in a typical district election. Over 80% of his donors are from outside of Poway. Meanwhile, there are political action committees involved in Poway politics attempting to influence the outcome in our local races. These PACs do not have a campaign limit and they receive big dollars from developers, housing contractors, and other individuals. Then the PACs cycle the money to other PACs who end up creating negative campaign ads against candidates that they oppose. Often these ads are heavily distorted and meant to scare the public. Community Voices, the San Diego Police Officers Association, and the Lincoln Club are players in this space. Poway Voter Demographics We also discussed the changing voter registration numbers for Poway. Our “City in the Country” has been a strong “red” city for a long time, but now things are changing. The Democrat voter registration has almost caught up with the Republicans. In fact, more Powegians voted for Biden than Trump in the 2020 election. Could this mean that the Poway Democratic Club's endorsed candidates might have a serious shot at beating Steve Vaus and the other GOP candidates? Yuri Bohlen is a candidate for Poway Mayor, and he joined me for a marathon 3-hour podcast covering so many hot topics in the City of Poway. Our livestream audience was also continually active presenting questions and comments for Yuri to respond to. Here are the highlights: Yuri wants to make “Poway the City in the Country” again. He wants to stop unfair housing mandates from Sacramento and let Poway make decisions for Poway's own future. We spoke about many of the development projects going on in Poway including the Outpost, Fairfield, and The Farm in Poway. Yuri Bohlen shared his plans to improve senior services and the homeless. Yuri felt passionately about the thrift stores displaced by the Fairfield development project. He wants to work with Poway Councilperson, Caylin Frank, to help these thrift shops find a new home. Yuri wants to improve communication with the people and get their input on housing development with a Residential District Review committee. We spoke about the increase of crime in Poway, particularly home thefts and catalytic converter heists. Yuri shared his thoughts on making Poway a safer city. Yuri Bohlen was a candidate for mayor in 2018 and has done his due diligence in the past 4 years. He is much more informed on the issues, including detailed city council agenda items and the broader topic of property rights. Even though Yuri is running for mayor, he is often a vocal supporter of current Poway Mayor, Steve Vaus. We explored this apparent dichotomy giving Yuri an opportunity to clarify this issue. Mayor Steve Vaus is in his second term as mayor of Poway. Prior to his first mayoral election in 2014, he served on the Poway City Council for two years. In December of 2018 he was unanimously elected as the Chair of the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) and served two years.Steve is a four-time Grammy Award nominee and 2010 Grammy-winning recording artist. He has also won multiple Emmy Awards. Additionally Mayor Vaus owns a Poway production company which has served clients such as the San Diego Padres, Cox Communications, Barona Resort, the U.S. Navy and others.

On April 27, 2019, in the middle of Passover, a white supremacist burst through the doors of a Chabad synagogue in Poway, California and opened fire, killing congregant Lori Gilbert-Kaye and injuring three others. As we approach the second anniversary of the shooting, we speak to Mayor Steve Vaus, a Grammy-winning country music singer, who was serving his first term as Poway's mayor at the time.  Then we're joined by AJC Paris Director Anne-Sophie Sebban-Bécache to talk about the case of Sarah Halimi, a 65-year old French woman who was murdered in 2017 because she was Jewish. San Diego Supervisor District 2 candidates Steve Vaus and Joel Anderson offer their stances on the issues as they vie to represent the East County. Plus, two teenage sisters are shedding light on what it means to be Black in the Poway Unified School District and they’re making a big impact. Also, for decades clinical trials have mostly recruited white men. A federal 10-year study called “All of Us” is trying to change that but some researchers believe the program may not actually benefit everyone. In addition, Phillip Halpern, a retiring federal prosecutor, has some choice words for Attorney General William Barr. And, the 1988 fires that scorched Yellowstone National Park captivated the nation and marked a new chapter of massive wildfires in the West. Finally, California theme parks could lose billions of dollars as the state’s coronavirus restrictions threaten to keep parks closed for the holiday season.

Incumbent Poway City Councilman Barry Leonard was my guest, and we discussed a range of Poway issues.  Barry shared his experience getting into politics, his original appointment to the city council, his relationship with Steve Vaus and winning his first election.  We discussed some of Barry’s goals for his next term including managing the city’s finances prudently, seeing through the development of the new Mickey Cafagna Community Center and other city projects in Poway. Pete Murray joined us to discuss his campaign for San Diego County Superior Court Judge.  Pete shares his diverse background as a Deputy District Attorney, Deputy Attorney General and an owner of a private law practice.  We enjoyed walking down memory lane as Pete shared his early days at Duke University, his time as a combat helicopter pilot flying air support for the SEALS , his second stint at Duke in law school and the trajectory of his professional career.  We also touch on his community involvement here in Poway including coaching at Poway National Little League. Kevin McNamara joined us to discuss the redevelopment of the Stoneridge Golf Course and his new project, The Farm in Poway.  We reviewed the home types, sizes and expected price range.  We went over infrastructure issues including water, traffic and schools. I’ve had a great few weeks connecting with people doing special things in their life, pursuing their own happiness. We explore the history of San Diego housing development over the course of the last 40 years and how we ended up in this housing crisis.  It was interesting to retrace our memories of development in the 70s, 80s and 90s as communities in Mira Mesa, Rancho Penasquitos, Scripps Ranch and Carmel Valley were developed.  We then get into the idea of working from anywhere where you can use technology to work remotely 100% of the time.  We discuss a variety of different scenarios, the positive impact on our freeways and climate, the economic benefit to companies and the financial and lifestyle rewards for employees.  I also share highlights of my recent Facebook marketing campaign to grow the podcast audience. Chick-fil-A had their grand opening in Poway and the city is buzzing.  People love CFA’s chicken.  Powegians have a new restaurant to enjoy.  There are smiling faces and neighbors meeting neighbors at the big event in town.  City leaders are there to share the event and get a photo op, but are they unknowingly promoting CFA?  What exactly should be the role of local government when it comes to managing the local economy?  Which businesses should the city promote, push aside or make illegal?  We discuss these issues plus also get into the political issues that always revolve around Chick-fil-A and the religious activism of their ownership.
