Most people who need help with nervous system regulation, don't realize that they need this type of help on their healing journey. So, have you ever felt like no matter how hard you try, you're stuck in a cycle of frustration with your skin or health? Maybe you've diligently followed every protocol, adjusted your diet, and practiced mindset shifts—yet progress feels just out of reach. It's not your fault. In today's episode, we uncover why mindset alone isn't enough and how your nervous system could be the missing piece in your healing journey.I've long known that surface-level strategies like “positive thinking” or “stress management” don't actually do anything. Maybe you've noticed this too.So if you're familiar with “fight or flight” mode, then you likely know that staying in that state for an extended period is problematic for nervous system regulation. But what's missing from the conversation is “shutdown”… essentially a third state that is your body's ultimate protective mechanism—a state that often goes unnoticed because it doesn't require a catastrophic event to trigger it.Eliza Kingsford joins me for this episode that is perfect for you if you've ever been paralyzed by overwhelm or struggling to follow through with even the simplest self-care steps. Eliza is a licensed therapist who helps people experience breakthroughs using a unique combination of applied neuroscience and nervous system regulation training to guide her clients to permanent change, even if they've been struggling for decades.Because how balanced your nervous system is directly impacts chronic skin issues. This is why learning practical ways to shift your nervous system out of overwhelm and into a state of healing can be a significant step you need toward lasting progress.Let's dive in!In This Episode:The nervous system's role as the body's “control panel” for healing and balance. What most people don't realize about “Fight or flight” mode. How nervous system regulation that's out-of-balance can block mindset work from being effective.Signs that your nervous system is in overload or shutdown mode. The connection between nervous system health and chronic skin flares.Simple tools for nervous system regulation to reduce stress. How to manage your nervous system so it doesn't hit shutdownWhy addressing your nervous system is foundational to root-cause healing.Quotes“Your nervous system is your control panel—it governs everything you think, feel, say, and do. Without addressing it, true healing can't happen.”“It's not your mindset holding you back; it's your nervous system's ability to handle the load. Without tools to regulate it, even small stressors can feel overwhelming.”“Mindset hacks won't work if your nervous system is stuck in a protective state. You can't think your way out of a physiological response.”LinksFind Eliza online | InstagramGet Eliza's FREE Guide: Transform Your Life by Mastering Your Nervous SystemHealthy Skin Show ep. 361: How To Change Your Mindset (So Your Skin Doesn't Control Your Mood) w/ Brad BizjackHealthy Skin Show ep. 368: How To Create A Positive Mindset (Even If You Have A Negative Outlook Right Now) w/ Dr. Sue VarmaHealthy Skin Show ep. 297: Deconstructing Trauma + Chronic Skin Problems w/ MaryCatherine McDonald, PhD

Angela presents a biohack edition featuring Eliza Kingsford from episode 261, exploring the profound impact of our nervous system on our thoughts, emotions, and actions, emphasising the importance of being in a regulated state to access a flow state and enhance creativity. Eliza explains that carrying a disregulated nervous system into a task or activity can hinder productivity and lead to distractions like food, scrolling, or checking email. By recognising and understanding our own nervous system states, such as safety and connection, fight or flight, and shutdown, we can better navigate our reactions and behaviours. TAKEAWAYS Our nervous system plays a crucial role in our thoughts, feelings, actions, and creativity. Being in a flow state requires a regulated nervous system. If we carry a disregulated nervous system into a flow state, it will hinder our productivity and creativity. Disregulation can lead to engaging in shallow tasks or seeking distractions. Recognising and being aware of our nervous system is essential. It drives our behaviour and how we interact with others. Different cues can activate different states in our nervous system. Mapping out the flavours of our nervous system can help us understand our own unique states. This involves describing what makes us feel safe and connected, as well as what activates our fight or flight response or leads to shutdown. BEST MOMENTS "Being in a flow state requires a state of nervous system regulation." "If you carry a disregulated nervous system into that state, it's not going to be productive." "No one is immune to this. We all have a nervous system and all of them are picking up on cues all day long." "It's just getting to know what's the state of your system, right? And bringing in as much description as possible to be able to describe that." Eliza Kingsford is a licensed psychotherapist and nervous system practitioner who helps clients identify and regulate their nervous system so they can get out of their own way, remove obstacles and overcome self-sabotage. In this episode, Eliza joins Angela to talk about how we can manage our nervous systems, build adaptive reserves and enhance the control we have over factors such as resilience, energy and health in life. KEY TAKEAWAYS Many people want to change but don't know how to get out of their own way. Finding the key to this has been Eliza's mission - the unblocking of that mental barrier that disallows change to start. Our society, system and culture does not teach us to dream in terms of moonshot goals for ourselves. We encourage it as children, but when we reach adulthood, we add "safety barriers" that stifle our ambition. The initial sense of optimism and excitement we feel when we envision our outcomes is hard to maintain. Every journey is filled with challenge. The trick is to focus hard on the bigger why. The goal in nervous system work is to build capacity and flexibility. First the awareness of which state we're in, then the flexibility to move between the states. BEST MOMENTS 'What drives change? How do people do that?' 'Our physiology really does influence everything we think, do say and feel' 'It takes a re-training of the brain' 'if you are sympathetically activated, you are going to execute a certain way of thinking' VALUABLE RESOURCES Take My Biohacking Quiz and Get A Free Personalised Report - www.yourtotalhealthcheck.comBecome an Insider of The Female Biohacker Collective and have Angela as Your Health Coach in Your Pocket - www.femalebiohacker.comFree Fasting Guide - www.angelafosterperformance.com/fastingPodcast Shownotes - www.angelafosterperformance.com/podcasts Thanks to our Sponsor: Bon Charge -  Get 20% off at www.boncharge.com/Angela    To express your interest in the Biosyncing program go to angelafoster.me/biosyncing For 50% off Eliza's 14 day jumpstart program to begin shifting your relationship with food (Normally $44) use coupon code ANGELA50 at https://www.elizakingsford.com/jumpstart-product-page/ www.elizakingsford.com https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCL1Og4dGmoY94O6aFnUmtDQ ABOUT THE GUEST Eliza Kingsford is a licensed psychotherapist and nervous system practitioner who helps clients identify and regulate their nervous system so they can get out of their own way, remove obstacles and overcome self-sabotage. The Full Plate returns! What I thought would be a short break turned into a few years. During that time, I opened and closed a business, had a miscarriage, had a baby, and opened a brand new business that focuses on retaining, recruiting, and promoting women in the workplace. So it's been a wild few years. But my heart called me to bring this podcast back. And return to my roots. I'm honored to bring my dear friend, Eliza Kingsford, to the show to talk about wellness in a way that's not talked about (but is so essential). Eliza's work is at the intersection of the science of nutrition and the psychology of eating. She's the author of Brain-Powered Weight Loss and is a licensed psychotherapist.  In part one of our conversation, we discuss why nutrition is simple, but the human element is the missing piece. Eliza gets to the root of weight loss, dieting, and health in a way that will give you practical steps to take. If you've struggled with the question, “Why don't I do better when I know better?” this episode will provide you with the clarity to move forward. Additionally, Eliza and I explore: What does life look like when you stop dieting. Why embracing diets keeps us safe but not fulfilled. Why understanding safety is the key to healthy living. The following two episodes are for you if you're ready to get off the yo-yo diet roller-coaster, stop obsessing about food, and learn how to eat with peace, ease, and even joy. The Full Plate Courses 3:18 - What is simple (and not simple) about nutrition 6:10 - We are doing health wrong, here's how 12:11 - The hard work is the easy part. So why aren't I making progress? 16:39 - What is left if you remove dieting? 22:42 - The core truth of all dieting Who is Eliza? In this episode, Eliza and Mordechai discuss ways to help kids that are struggling with their weight. They discuss strategies to help them learn healthy internal dialogues and how to manage their belief systems so that they can have a solid foundation for managing their weight and self-image. HighlightsWhen someone is struggling with their weight it means that they probably are not living the happiest, healthiest, and biggest life that they were meant to live.Eliza was told that she could not embrace the body positive movement if she was also talking about how to lose weight. She believed that it was not only possible but necessary to be happy with your current body while working to change habits on the path to transform and lose weight. When Eliza was younger, she had a poor relationship with her body image and after a long struggle with it, she finally decided that she would no longer have that relationship with her body and she began to investigate why and how to fix it.It wasn't until after seeing kids go home from camp after having success only to see them slip backward, did Eliza realize that the critical component was the approach to image and mindset around their current state.Believing that you can do something is the most important part of any endeavor.Kids need to be taught early to become aware of their language and how to observe their language and thoughts. It is important to help our kids understand the modern food environment. You have to help them regulate processed food intake.  Processed food is muting the body's ability to send correct hunger and fullness cues. You must help kids understand that foods affect how the body feels throughout the day.“A belief system is your operating system” Eliza KingsfordRelevant Linkshttps://www.elizakingsford.com/https://www.elizakingsford.com/brain-powered-weight-loss-the-11-step-behavior-based-plan-that-ends-overeating/

Eliza Kingsford is a mind/body practitioner, licenced psychotherapist and leading expert in weight management and body image. She talks with Angela about weight loss and how we all stay stuck in our own story and pattern, repeating it over and over unless we are able to move out and change the paradigm. When you are able to change your paradigms and work effectively with the energy you have you are better equipped to deal with everything. You can objectively look at any situation and ask the questions that will move you forward and Eliza shares great content about how anyone can change a paradigm when they learn how to connect with the alignment of themselves.   KEY TAKEAWAYS The first step is to examine your values and what you believe. Looking at what you have and don’t have will tell you what your beliefs are. Our results are a reflection of our paradigm. You can give people all of the tools they require but if the unconscious paradigm hasn’t been addressed you will always go back to what your beliefs are. At our core, we are all just energy beings and you attract the energy you put out. Your emotions are the indicator for your energy field and whether you are out of alignment Until you have a clear understanding of where you are going the brain pulls information from the past. You need to stop doing everything and turn inward to concentrate on your vibration and blueprint, where you are going. Focus on repetitive action and actively engage with rituals and tools that will shift you from your current pathway until the person you are becoming is your new normal The more you surrender to the process without rules and obligations the easier it is for the energy. Surrender is not about giving up it’s the opposite it’s what keeps us out of our way and stops the messages such as ‘I can’t’ Words are just a representation of your physical emotions the vibration, the emotionality, is what changes our outside world It’s not what we say that matters it’s how we feel, the vibration that changes   BEST MOMENTS ‘Whatever your story, it’s what you will achieve in life’ ‘The more you surrender and slow down the quicker the change will come’ ‘Everyone needs to connect with the alignment of themselves’   VALUABLE RESOURCES High Performance Health podcast series Transform your sleep DNA optimization High Performance website  Eliza Kingsford Brain Powered Weight Loss - Eliza Kingsford Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself - Joe Dispenza     ABOUT THE HOST Angela Foster   Angela is a Nutritionist, Health and Performance Coach. Direction Not Perfection

Happy New Year! It is time to say “Goodbye” to 2020 and “Hello” to 2021. Most of us are thinking “Good riddance 2020!” Don’t let the door hit you on your way out”. And “Welcome 2021. We thought you would never get here”. All of our lives were changed in 2020 and we had to adjust our routines to work with the new normal. Now is a good time to sit back and reflect on what worked and what didn’t. As part of my business plan, I listen to Pat Flynn who writes a blog called Smart Passive Income. He recommends that we write down a list of what is working within our business and what is not. Keep the processes that are going well. Fire the processes that are not. https://www.smartpassiveincome.com/ I believe we should be doing exact same thing in the health and fitness world! What is working well for you? What is not working? We need to really assess the actions that feel good, produce great results or sit well with our soul and embrace them, keeping them in our daily lives. The flip side of this coin would be to look at those things that constantly feel hard to maintain or throw up barriers. Rather than throw them out, I suggest that you continually assess, and adjust those hard things to make them work for you, instead of against you. If you want anything to change in 2021 you need to be intentional and plan for it. Remember, we cannot control what happens to us and around us in the world. What we do have some control over are things in our own homes and within our own bodies. If lack of control was driving you crazy in 2020 you can gain back some of that feeling of control by adjusting your own behaviors. Exercise:Divide a piece of paper into 2 columns and label them “Working” and “Not Working”. Think about things that you have been doing to help reach or maintain your goals. Place them in the appropriate column. Start with food, exercise and health measures but don’t stop there. Let your columns trickle over into relationships, career, household or any other areas you are working on. There are no rules and no right or wrong items. Just start brainstorming. Don’t stick to your areas of comfort, think outside the box. Example:Working: Wake up early every day. It sets up my whole day.Drink hot water instead of coffee some mornings. I don’t always need caffeine.Writing down meal ideas before grocery shopping. Going into the week with a game plan feels good.Schedule a date night with my husband every week. It helps our relationship and keeps our life flowing.Walk and talk dates with friends. My dog gets a walk and I get friend time. Not Working:Waiting until night to workout. Something always gets in the way.Scheduling anything in the evenings. It always feels harder to make it happenKeeping my house clean. It is too much to do all in one day.Keeping a consistent chore schedule for my kids. It ebbs and flows depending on the season. Continue doing the things that are working for you. Make a plan and schedule those things in. Assess the things that aren’t working and figure out how you can tweak them, change them or even throw them out completely knowing that they will never work for you. Use your energy on the things that produce results. Word of the year.Have you come up with your word of the year for 2021? Rather than making resolutions choose a word that has meaning and speaks directly to you, reminding you what you are fighting for. I’m loving the words that have come in from my clients and friends! if you enjoy listening to my podcast and leave me a review, I would love to put your word on a bracelet and send it in the mail to you! As a registered dietitian I specialize in the science of using food and nutrition to help people lead a healthy lifestyle and/or achieve specific health-related goals. As I meet with client after client it is obvious that a huge part of finding success on the journey to live a healthy life is related to what is in their head. When anyone is on a weight loss journey, what they believe about themselves, what they tell themselves and how they think are all important parts of the plan. Today I am going to bring you a professional psychotherapist and weight management expert to weigh in on the effect our brain has on weight loss. Eliza Kingsford is a licensed psychotherapist, mind-body practitioner and behavior change specialist who helps clients struggling with food addiction, body image and emotional eating. Eliza’s work has been featured on Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz, NBC Health, CNN Health, Health Magazine, Shape Magazine, Mind Body Green and many more. She is the author of Brain-Powered Weight Loss and has sat on scientific advisory boards with the leading researchers in the field of food addiction, obesity and weight management. Eliza is turning the diet industry on its head by combining the science of nutrition with the psychology of eating to create lasting results for her clients. She utilizes group coaching, online courses and one on one immersive programs. Eliza’s book, Brain-Powered Weight Loss, delves into the mind set and psychology that’s needed to understand your relationship with food. When she sees someone who is struggling with food issues and body image, being over-weight isn’t the problem it is always a symptom of something else that is going on with their mindset, belief systems or past trauma. Changing the way they think about and behave around food is what it takes to permanently achieve weight-loss success. Brain Powered Weight Loss was the foundation of her work. It is a stepping-stone to the next level of her work that has evolved since she wrote it five years ago. There are both Intrinsic and extrinsic emotional eating factors that influence you.Intrinsic factors could be carrying parent issues or childhood issues into eating. Extrinsic factors could be that you really like food and ads make you hungry. There are typical responses to emotions that we have learned. For example, when we got hurt as a child our parent gave us ice cream, which made us feel better. Now we think we need ice cream to feel better about anything. That is a trigger that can be changed. We need to pause before we dive into an innate behavior. The pause is what is important. You need to sit back and be willing to analyze your behavior. Be intentional about what you want your story to be and don’t repeat patterns just because that is what you have always done. There are steps to take to create a new story. 1. Awareness. Be aware of patterns of behavior that you are stuck in. 2. Shift. Shift your narrative: Write yourself a new story. 3. Reinforcement.Reinforcement is the key that most people miss. Knowing something is not the same thing as doing something. You need to take action about your behaviors if you wish to change them. It will take many, many repetitions of good healthy behaviors to make changes. Slow and steady wins the race. In order to make change you need to shift your expectations. If you have a large expectation it will be hard to meet. Disappointment is the space between expectations and reality. The reason you feel disappointment is that you expected something to be one way and the reality was another way. You can’t control the outcome, but you can control the expectation. Let go of it and focus on daily habits that you can control every day. What you do, say, think and feel can close the gap between what you expect and what you actually get. Positive self-talk can help to keep you from filling your head with negative talk, but it won’t help you make changes. In order to change you have to make incremental shifts in your mindset until you believe what you are telling yourself. You will then experience a daily shifting of who you are. As you become more confident in the things you do, the way you feel and the little things that move you in a good direction, your momentum will build. She is turning the diet industry on its head by combining the science of nutrition with the psychology of eating to create lasting results for her clients. Episode Highlights How Do I Handle This? We often start with treating the symptom and default our focus on “losing the weight”. Working to treat the cause by looking at behaviors and choices around foods that led to weight gain is much more effective This also removes the desire of constantly measuring your success to the number on the scale Tips: Do not separate siblings foods, instead work together as a family unit to eat healthier and make better decisions for to support your families health overall Do not emphasize that a specific child must eat a certain way or isolate them as having a problem  “Just because you can doesn't mean you should” Just because certain kinds of processed foods does not affect your other children's weight does not give good reason to still have these kinds of foods in your household Set your household in a way to support your whole family's health and agree upon family values as a whole The Weight Conversation  Parents inadvertently choose words that sometimes set up a good/bad dichotomy with food Taking out the language like “you can have” or “you can't have” -  “No, you cannot have seconds.” “You need to stop eating.” “Do you really need that cookie?”  Try “What does your body say? Does your body tell you you're full? Does your body tell you you're hungry?” Work on the behavior around food in your entire family system    Where to learn more about Eliza Kingsford... If you have been struggling with your weight loss goals know that a healthy body is about more than diet and exercise. The human brain is wired to find the easiest, fastest way to satiate hunger. Unfortunately in our modern world, processed food is designed to be quick and easy. So beating yourself up for reaching for a bag of something to snack on will only cause unnecessary stress. To change existing or create new habits and behaviors we need to create new neural pathways. Drew’s guest, Eliza Kingsford, helps her patients do just that. It’s a fresh year with new goals and resolutions possibly consist of trying to live a healthier lifestyle and possibly shed a few pounds?  However, something tells me you've been here before- you've tried this before- this resolution-  is starting to feel like groundhog day. It probably feels like insanity…. A wise man once said "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results" . It seems old habits, emotions and patterns usually come back into play… And here’s the key…. The most important component in the battle with your body is healing the source of your suffering. Successful weight management requires shifting your identity and belief systems...well before diet and exercise. I'm not throwing this out there without providing you some answers. The book is called "Brain Powered Weight Loss" written by Eliza Kingsford. Eliza is described as a mind/body practitioner and nationally recognized weight management expert. She is a leading voice in the burgeoning mind/body connection movement. She is also a licenced psychotherapist, trained in clinical psychology, Neuro Emotional Technique [NET], and Emotional Freedom Technique (or tapping) methodologies.  She was a behavioral coach, then clinical director, and finally executive director of an obesity and weight management summer program for teens for 10 years. She wrote the book-  Brain Powered Weight Loss in 2017, highlighting the brain-weight equation and how our weight is impacted by the relationship we have with food, and not just the food itself. Our discussion is quite fascinating and as we discuss concepts and checklists in greater detail she also mentions worksheets available to the listerners as well. How does this happen? We’re all overstimulated and suffering from comparison overload. How do we help our children and ourselves deal with the challenges of distorted body image and eating healthfully? Some big takeaways from this episode include: 1. We’re not fueling our bodies in a loving and compassionate way. 2. When kids are hooked on hyper-palatable foods, it’s neurologically harder for them to make good decisions. 3. How to give kids autonomy in eating, while helping them pay attention to fullness cues. What do you think about when you hear the word “diet?”For some people, the word diet is just like the word “no.” Some think dieting means cutting out many of the foods you love to eat or depriving yourself by eating less. But it doesn’t have to be that way.On this episode of The Dr. Gundry Podcast, I chat with weight loss expert Eliza Kingsford about how YOU can take power back from the word “diet.” Once you’ve taken back that power you can lose weight, stay healthy, and keep extra weight off for good.Eliza is a licensed psychotherapist and an expert on body image, weight loss, overweight and obesity, eating disorders and food addiction. She’s spent years working with overweight and obese teens at her Empowered Wellness Camp, helping them to lose weight and keep it off.She also just released a brand new book called Brain-Powered Weight Loss about the psychological connection between what we eat and how we feel. We’ll talk about all these topics and more, including how to develop a “healthy obsession” and how to deal with some of the most common misconceptions about healthy eating. We’ll even discuss the effect screen time is having on us, our kids, and our grandkids (hint: It’s not good!).

This week, we have an amazing interview for you with licensed psychotherapist, the Executive Director of Wellspring Camps, and author of Brain-Powered Weight Loss, Eliza Kingsford. As you listen, Eliza shares the common relationships that we have with food through coping mechanism, comfort foods, celebration, or addiction. Then, she shares the actions we can take today to improve how we see food, ourselves, and our relationship with others Exercises you can begin today to shift your mindset about yourself and your relationship with food: Awareness Find a Replacement Consistency Have an Intention or "Why" Mindfulness Repetitive Action Brain-Powered Weight Loss Losing weight and successfully maintaining it over the long term is not as much about what you put in your stomach; it’s more about what’s happening in the brain. In Brain-Powered Weight Loss, psychotherapist and weight management expert Eliza Kingsford shows that more than 90 percent of people who go on diet programs (even healthy ones) fail or eventually regain because they have a dysfunctional relationship with food. Changing this relationship by changing the way you think about and behave around food is what it takes to permanently achieve weight-loss success. Kingsford’s 11-step first-of-its-kind program enlists dozens of mind-altering and behavior-changing exercises and techniques and shows you how to: • Identify and reverse the conscious and unconscious thinking errors and food triggers that lead to the behaviors that drive our food decisions. • Let go of the mindset of going on or off a diet in favor of a conscious quest to pursue a lifestyle of healthy eating and everyday activity—one that can last forever. • Successfully use what Kingsford calls “dealing skills” to outsmart high-risk situations, tame stressful times, and prevent an eating “slip” from leading to a setback or all-out binge. • Find out if you have what emerging research shows is an addiction to certain high-fat and sugar-added, processed foods that can be as powerful as addiction to cigarettes and narcotics. • Design a personal healthy eating program built on Kingsford’s 10 Principles of Healthy Eating. Wellspring Camps Executive Director, Eliza Kingsford, Featured On Dr. Phil Show https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ejRriKfwNw About Eliza Kingsford Eliza Kingsford is a Licensed Psychotherapist specializing in weight management, eating disorders and body image. Back by popular demand...Eliza Kingsford (aka my sister). We had such a great time talking about her book last time and so many of you sent an outpouring of love about that episode, that we decided to do part 2. On today's episode of the progress over perfection podcast, we discuss how to recover from setbacks (aka life). We've both battled injuries this past year and learned so much from our "new normal." It can be a confusing time when life gets flipped upside down. Injuries can leave us wondering, "why did this happen to me?" Today, we discuss why that's actually benefitted our journey's in the long run. We also dive deep into the scale, and why you might need to break up with it for a while (or forever). So many women have written me lately sharing their deep struggles with feeling like they are rocking in every department, but the minute the scale doesn't show them a number they like, it completely negates everything they've worked so hard on. Join us in this episode as we talk about why this behavior is so destructive and how you can beat it, once and for all. Linkes: www.retifit.com

This week on the Progress over Perfection Podcast, I'm interviewing someone very special to me. Technically I'm breaking all the rules (they say you shouldn't interview your own family, but you know what? I LOVE to do everything people tell me not to do, because lets face it, life's too short to follow the straight and narrow path and not do what feels right). So this week, my sister Eliza Kingsford, author of Brain Powered Weight Loss is here to share the truth behind the obesity epidemic, why 70 % of the population is considered over weight, why mindfulness is such a crucial component in creating lasting behavior changes and last but certainly not least, why people may have the wrong idea about struggling with binge eating and what the clinical term actually means.    Connect with Eliza: Website: hthttp://www.elizakingsford.com/ Buy Her Book on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Brain-Powered-Weight-Loss-Behavior-Based-Overeating/dp/162336809X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1484501870&sr=8-1&keywords=brain+powered+weight+loss   Follow Eliza on Social Media: @ElizaKingsford
