The Marine Institute and the Socio-Economic Marine Research Unit (SEMRU) at the University of Galway are conducting a survey of marine and marine-related companies to produce Ireland's Ocean Economy Report for 2024. This survey, which takes place every two years, aims to collect data on economic activity that is not currently available from public data sources for six of the thirteen marine industries, namely: 1. Marine Retail Services; 2. Marine Commerce and Trade; 3. Seaweed, Marine Biotechnology and Bioproducts; 4. Marine Manufacturing, Construction and Engineering; 5. Marine Technology Products and Services; and 6. Marine Renewable Energy. The results of this survey will be used to generate figures for Ireland's Ocean Economy Report 2024 on three economic indicators: Turnover, Gross Value Added (GVA) and Employment, providing essential data to support marine planning in Ireland. Ireland's Ocean Economy Report 2024 will be the eighth in the ocean economy series, since it was first published in 2010. The Report is now updated on an annual basis with figures and trends on the performance of Ireland's ocean economy. The Marine Institute provides support to the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications on Marine Spatial Planning in Ireland. Methane is a greenhouse gas that is roughly 25 times more powerful than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere, making it a key target of global efforts to fight climate change. Dairy cows and beef cattle are a significant source of methane, which is released as a byproduct of food digestion in the stomach of cows and other hoofed animals. Kangaroos, like cows, also have microbes in their gut which aid in digesting plant material. But these microbes release acetic acid instead of methane. Scientists at Washington State University collected gut bacteria from zoo kangaroos, and then introduced cultures of the bacteria into a solution mimicking a cow's stomach. The bacteria quickly flourished and replaced the community of methane-producing microbes. Birgitte Ahring is a professor in the Bioproducts, Sciences and Engineering Laboratory at Washington State University. She joins us to talk about the research, which is described in a paper recently published in the journal Biocatalysis and Agricultural Biotechnology, and how it could help the agriculture sector curb a potent greenhouse gas.

As public institutions are mostly spending tax money, there is a general interest that they are working highly efficient. In order to improve the procurement process of public institutions, Prof. Dr. Roland Bogaschewsky has launched an open network platform for public procurers. The platform functions as an exchange platform for ideas, for experiences and for these documents that are needed in the tender processes. At the moment, around 20.000 members in the German speaking area (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) are participating. Hello ocean hackers! Mark here. I'm very excited to publish this, the first in our subject matter expert interviews for the podcast and hackathon. For those of you who don't know, all of this is centered around an annual Hack for the Sea event, which takes place in September in or around Cape Ann Massachusetts. The concept for this episode is how an ocean hacker might balance the need for deploying sensors to collect marine data, and the impact said sensors might have on the marine flora and fauna. Our experts are Pete Marchetto and Dmitry Ponirakis. Dmitri is a senior noise analyst and applications programmer for the Bioacoustics Research Program at The Cornell Lab. He developed something called the Acoustic Ecology Toolbox to model the loss of communication space and masking of animal vocalizations from anthropogenic and abiotic sound sources. Peter is an Assistant Professor at University of Minnesota's Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering. His research is focused on how to get data from the natural environment out of the field and into a form that can be used to make decisions I met Pete first on Twitter, we had a great exchange about sensors. Pete was able to actually do a calculation for me to show how much impact a single sensor might have.
