Dr. Ethan Russo has made immense contributions to the understanding of cannabis. 2024 was particularly productive as Dr. Russo's name kept popping up in some very interesting papers. We got him to chat with us about two of them.First there is the entourage effect paper. The entourage effect is the idea that different cannabinoids, terpenes and other components of the cannabis plant work together synergistically to give a desired effect. Professor Raphael Mechoulam and colleagues first talked about the entourage effect amongst endogenous cannabinoids in the human body. Dr. Ethan Russo and others have expanded the idea to phytocannabinoids and other cannabis plant components. But it is still just an idea. Now there is a trial that looks at if inhaled limonene makes THC cause less anxiety in people. This could be the beginning of the evidence to validate the entourage effect.Second, we chatted about a CBG paper. We have a lovely sound bite that describes CBG as a “bubble bath for your brain”. This study gives us some early evidence of the clinical effects of CBG, and whether it actually reduces anxiety.Let's do some learning!Ethan Russo.org - WebsiteEthan Russo- LinkedInCReDO Science - WebsiteVaporized D-limonene selectively mitigates the acute anxiogenic effects of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol in healthy adults who intermittently use cannabis. - PaperAcute effects of cannabigerol on anxiety, stress, and mood: a double‑blind, placebo‑controlled, crossover, field trial. - PaperMusic by:Dark Star by The Grateful Dead - YouTube(Yes we got a SOCAN membership to use this song all legal and proper like)Additional Music:Desiree Dorion desireedorion.comMarc Clement - FacebookTranscripts, papers and so much more at: reefermed.ca

Music News: Pink Floyd and Joni MitchellIn this episode of the Deadhead Cannabis Show, Larry Mishkin reflects on the intersection of music and cannabis in the wake of the recent elections. He delves into the Grateful Dead's legacy, highlighting a notable performance from 1973, and explores the lyrical depth of 'To Lay Me Down.' The conversation also touches on music news, including Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon' and Joni Mitchell's recent birthday. The episode concludes with a discussion on recent research indicating that cannabis may serve as a substitute for more dangerous substances. This conversation explores the complex relationship between cannabis use and substance consumption among young adults, the implications of Florida's failed marijuana legalization initiative, and the potential of cannabis as a harm reduction tool for opioid use. It also highlights popular cannabis strains and their effects, alongside a cultural reflection on the Grateful Dead's music. Chapters00:00 Post-Election Reflections: Music and Cannabis08:29 The Grateful Dead's Musical Legacy14:48 Exploring the Lyrics: To Lay Me Down21:59 Music News: Pink Floyd and Joni Mitchell37:06 Weather Report Suite: A Musical Journey43:10 Second Set Highlights: Mississippi Half-Step and Beyond49:36 Marijuana Research: Substitution Effects51:24 Cannabis Use Among Young Adults56:13 Florida's Marijuana Legalization Initiative01:05:01 Cannabis as a Tool for Opioid Harm Reduction01:11:10 Strains of the Week and Cannabis Culture Larry's Notes:Grateful DeadNovember 11, 1973 (51 years ago)Winterland ArenaSan Francisco, CAGrateful Dead Live at Winterland Arena on 1973-11-11 : Free Borrow & Streaming : Internet Archive Happy Veteran's Day  A very famous show from a very famous year.  Many feel 1973 was the peak of the band's post psychedelic era.  Certainly right up there with 1977 as top years for the band, even by November they were still in full stride during a three night run at Winterland, this being the third and final night of the run.  In 2008 the Dead released the box set:  “Winterland 1973: The complete recordings” featuring shows from Nov. 9, 10 and 11, 1973.  This was the Dead's second “complete recordings” release featuring all of the nights of a single run. The first was “Fillmore West, 1969, the Complete Recordings” from Feb. 27, 28 and March 1 and 2 (IMHO the best collection of live music ever released by the band).  The band later released a follow up, Winterland 1977: The Complete Recordings a three night run June 7, 8 and 9, 1977 that is also an outstanding box set. Today's show has a 16 song first set, a six song second set and a three song encore, a true rarity for a Dead show of any era (other than NYE shows). The second set consists of ½ Step, Big River, Dark Star with MLBJ, Eyes of the World, China Doll and Sugar Magnolia and is as well played as any set ever played by the band.  They were on fire for these three days.  A great collection of music and killer three night run for those lucky enough to have snagged a ticket for any or all of the nights. Patrick Carr wrote in the NY Times that: “The Dead had learned how to conceive and perform a music which often induced something closely akin to the psychedelic experience; they were and are experts in the art and science of showing people another world, or a temporary altering (raising) of world consciousness.  It sounds pseudomystical pretentious perhaps, but the fact is that it happens and it is intentional.”  INTRO:                                 Promised Land                (show opener into Bertha/Greatest Story/Sugaree/Black Throated Wind)                                                Track #1                                                0 – 2:10 "Promised Land" is a song lyric written by Chuck Berry to the melody of "Wabash Cannonball", an American folk song. The song was first recorded in this version by Berry in 1964 for his album St. Louis to Liverpool. Released in December 1964, it was Berry's fourth single issued following his prison term for a Mann Act conviction. The record peaked at #41 in the Billboard charts on January 16, 1965. Berry wrote the song while in prison, and borrowed an atlas from the prison library to plot the itinerary. In the lyrics, the singer (who refers to himself as "the poor boy") tells of his journey from Norfolk, Virginia, to the "Promised Land", Los Angeles, California, mentioning various cities in Southern states that he passes through on his journey. Describing himself as a "poor boy," the protagonist boards a Greyhound bus in Norfolk, Virginia that passes Raleigh, N.C., stops in Charlotte, North Carolina, and bypasses Rock Hill, South Carolina. The bus rolls out of Atlanta but breaks down, leaving him stranded in downtown Birmingham, Alabama. He then takes a train "across Mississippi clean" to New Orleans. From there, he goes to Houston, where "the people there who care a bit about me" buy him a silk suit, luggage and a plane ticket to Los Angeles. Upon landing in Los Angeles, he calls Norfolk, Virginia ("Tidewater four, ten-oh-nine") to tell the folks back home he made it to the "promised land." The lyric: "Swing low, sweet chariot, come down easy/Taxi to the terminal zone" refers to the gospel lyric: "Swing low, sweet Chariot, coming for to carry me Home" since both refer to a common destination, "The Promised Land," which in this case is California, reportedly a heaven on earth. Billboard called the song a "true blue Berry rocker with plenty of get up and go," adding that "rinky piano and wailing Berry electric guitar fills all in neatly."[2]Cash Box described it as "a 'pull-out-all-the-stops' rocker that Chuck pounds out solid sales authority" and "a real mover that should head out for hit territory in no time flat."[3] In 2021, it was listed at No. 342 on Rolling Stone's "Top 500 Greatest Songs of All Time". Apparently played by the Warlocks and the Grateful Dead in their earliest days, Bob Weir started playing this with the Dead in 1971, and it remained a regular right through to the band's last show ever in 1995.  Among those deeply touched by Chuck's genius were Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead. They often paid homage to Chuck by weaving his songs into their performances, breathing new life into his timeless melodies. "Promised Land," with its relentless drive, became an anthem of journey and aspiration. Their electrifying renditions of "Johnny B. Goode" were not mere covers but jubilant celebrations of a narrative that resonated with the dreamer in all of us. The Grateful Dead's performances of "Around and Around" echoed Chuck's mastery of capturing life's cyclical rhythms—a dance of beginnings and endings, joy and sorrow. And when they took on "Run Rudolph Run," they infused the festive classic with their own psychedelic flair, bridging the gap between tradition and innovation. A moment etched in musical history was when Chuck Berry shared the stage with the Grateful Dead during their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. The air was thick with reverence and electricity—a meeting of titans where the past, present, and future of rock converged in harmonious resonance. Again, in May 1995, Chuck opened for the Grateful Dead in Portland, Oregon. It was a night where legends collided, and the music swirled like a tempest, leaving a lasting impression on all who were fortunate enough to witness it. This version really rocks out.  I especially love Keith's piano which is featured prominently in this clip. Played:  430 timesFirst:  May 28, 1971 at Winterland Arena, San Francisco, CA, USALast:  July 9, 1995 at Soldier Field, Chicago, IL, USA  SHOW No. 1:                    To Lay Me Down  (out of Black Throated Wind/into El Paso/Ramble On Rose/Me and Bobby McGee                                                Track #6                                                2:21 – 4:20 David Dodd:  “To Lay Me Down” is one of the magical trio of lyrics composed in a single afternoon in 1970 in London, “over a half-bottle of retsina,” according to Robert Hunter. The other two were “Ripple” and “Brokedown Palace.” Well, first—wouldn't we all like to have a day like that! And, second—what unites these three lyrics, aside from the fact that they were all written on the same day? Hunter wrote, in his foreword to The Complete Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics:”And I wrote reams of bad songs, bitching about everything under the sun, which I kept to myself: Cast not thy swines before pearls. And once in a while something would sort of pop out of nowhere. The sunny London afternoon I wrote ‘Brokedown Palace,' ‘To Lay Me Down,' and ‘Ripple,' all keepers, was in no way typical, but it remains in my mind as the personal quintessence of the union between writer and Muse, a promising past and bright future prospects melding into one great glowing apocatastasis.” “‘To Lay me Down' was written a while before the others [on the Garcia album], on the same day as the lyrics to ‘Brokedown Palace' and ‘Ripple'—the second day of my first visit to England. I found myself left alone in Alan Trists's flat on Devonshire Terrace in West Kensington, with a supply of very nice thick linen paper, sun shining brightly through the window, a bottle of Greek Retsina wine at my elbow. The songs flowed like molten gold onto the page and stand as written. The images for ‘To Lay Me Down' were inspired at Hampstead Heath (the original title to the song) the day before—lying on the grass and clover on a day of swallowtailed clouds, across from Jack Straw's Castle [a pub, now closed and converted into flats--dd], reunited with the girlfriend of my youth, after a long separation.” Garcia's setting for the words is, like his music for those other two songs, perfect. The three-quarter time (notated as having a nine-eight feel), coupled with the gospel style of the melody and chords, makes for a dreamy, beauty-soaked song. I heard it on the radio today (yes, on the radio, yes, today—and no, not on a Grateful Dead Hour, but just in the course of regular programming), and it struck me that it was a gorgeous vehicle for Garcia's voice. By which I mean: for that strongly emotive, sweet but not sappy, rough but not unschooled instrument that was Garcia's alone. I have started to think that my usual recitation of where a song was first played, where it was last played, and where it was recorded by the band borders on pointless. All that info is readily available. What's interesting about the performance history of “To Lay Me Down” is that it was dropped from the rotation for more than 200 shows three times, and that its final performance, in 1992, came 125 shows after the penultimate one. The reappearance of the song, in the 1980 acoustic shows, came nearly six years after the previous performances in 1974. “Ripple” had a similar pattern, reappearing in those 1980 acoustic sets after 550 performances, or nearly ten years. Of the magical trio from that day of molten gold in West Kensington, “Brokedown Palace” had the most solid place in the Dead's performance rotation, with only one huge gap in its appearances—165 shows between 1977 and 1979. So, in terms of story, what can be discerned? The short version, for me: even if it's just for a day, even if it's just once more, even if it's just one last time—it's worth it. It's golden. It's home. This version is really great to listen to.  Jerry's voice is still so young and strong.  And the group singing works really well.  Jerry's also kills it with his lead guitar jamming. Released on “Garcia” in 1972 Played:  64 timesFirst:  July 30, 1970 at The Matrix, San Francisco, CA, USALast: June 28, 1992 at Deer Creek Music Center, Noblesville, IN, USA MUSIC NEWS:                                                           Music Intro:                       Brain Damage                                                                                    Pink Floyd                                                                                    Pink Floyd - Brain Damage (2023 Remaster)                                                                                    0:00 – 1:47             "Brain Damage" is the ninth track[nb 1] from English rock band Pink Floyd's 1973 album The Dark Side of the Moon.[2][3] It was sung on record by Roger Waters (with harmonies by David Gilmour), who would continue to sing it on his solo tours. Gilmour sang the lead vocal when Pink Floyd performed it live on their 1994 tour (as can be heard on Pulse). The band originally called this track "Lunatic" during live performances and recording sessions. "Brain Damage" was released as a digital single on 19 January 2023 to promote The Dark Side of the Moon 50th Anniversary box set.[4]             The uncredited manic laughter is that of Pink Floyd's then-road manager, Peter Watts.             The Dark Side of the Moon is the eighth studio album by the English rock band Pink Floyd, released on 1 March 1973, by Harvest Records in the UK and Capitol Records in the US. Developed during live performances before recording began, it was conceived as a concept album that would focus on the pressures faced by the band during their arduous lifestyle, and also deal with the mental health problems of the former band member Syd Barrett, who had departed the group in 1968. New material was recorded in two sessions in 1972 and 1973 at EMI Studios (now Abbey Road Studios) in London.             The Dark Side of the Moon is among the most critically acclaimed albums and often features in professional listings of the greatest of all time. It brought Pink Floyd international fame, wealth and plaudits to all four band members. A blockbuster release of the album era, it also propelled record sales throughout the music industry during the 1970s. The Dark Side of the Moon is certified 14x platinum in the United Kingdom, and topped the US Billboard Top LPs & Tape chart, where it has charted for 990 weeks. By 2013, The Dark Side of the Moon had sold over 45 million copies worldwide, making it the band's best-selling release, the best-selling album of the 1970s, and the fourth-best-selling album in history.[3] In 2012, the album was selected for preservation in the United States National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. David Gilmour Addresses Synchronicity Theory Between ‘The Dark Side of the Moon' and ‘Wizard of Oz'On Thursday, November 7, 2024, Pink Floyd's David Gilmour appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon amid his extensive run at New York's Madison Square Garden, where he is supporting his latest solo release, Luck and Strange. During the music industry legend's stop by the late-night talk show, he spoke with the program's host, who questioned the theory of synchronicity between TheDark Side of the Moon and The Wizard of Oz, commonly referred to as the Dark Side of the Rainbow.“You said that you think it's your best work since Dark Side of the Moon,” Fallon questioned at the top of the segment, comparing Gilmour's comments regarding his latest release, and the Pink Floyd classic. “When we finished Dark Side, there was a lot of crossfades and stuff between all the tracks. They had all to be done separately and then they all have to be edited in the old days before Pro Tools. When we finally finished, we sat down in the control room at Abbey Road and listened to it all the way through. And, wow. I–I guess all of us–have the feeling that it was something quite amazing–that we got it, and at the same point on this album, I had a very similar feeling, which is why I said that.” Fallon stewed on Luck and Strange during a series of follow-up questions that assisted in painting a portrait of familial involvement during the making of Gilmour's 2024 release–harnessing the conversation to the artist's preferred homebred approach before they segued into the realm of the Emerald City. Fallon landed on the topic of Oz during a bit aimed at busting rumors that have populated throughout the musician's 60-year tenure in the spotlight.“The Pink Floyd album, Dark Side of the Moon, was written to synchronize with the movie Wizard of Oz,” Fallon suggested. Prompting Gilmour's humor-tinged response, “Well, of course it was.” Fallon threw his hands up in response, acting on the comedic angle, before the musician clarified, “No, no. We listened to it, Polly and I, years ago–” Fallon stopped the artist to ask, “There's no planning that out?” Gilmour continued, “No. No, I mean, I only heard about it years later. Somebody said you put the needle on–vinyl that is– and on the third–you know you got the film running somehow–and on the third roar of the MGM lion, you put the needle on for the beginning of Dark Side, and there's these strange synchronicities that happen.” Fallon asked if Gilmour had ever tested the theory, to which he exclaimed, “Yeah!” He went on to admit, “And there are these strange coincidences–I'll call them coincidences.”  Joni Mitchell turns 81 - Joni Mitchell was born on Nov. 7th in 1943, making her 81 this past Thursday. For a short time, the three pieces that comprise the Suite were played as such, but that was relatively short-lived by Grateful Dead standards. The Prelude debuted in November 1972, originally as a separate piece from its eventual companions. The Dead played it, according to DeadBase, four more times in the spring of 1973 before it was first matched up with Weather Report Suite Parts 1 & 2, in September of that year. It was played regularly through October of 1974, and then dropped from the repertoire. The instrumental “Prelude,” composed by Weir, sets the stage for the two pieces to follow. I think it's one of the most beautiful little pieces of music I know—I have never once skipped through it over years of listening. I just let it wash over me and know that its simplicity and beauty are preparing me for the melancholy of Part 1, and the sometimes epic grandeur of Part 2. Part 1 is a song co-written with Eric Andersen, a well-known singer-songwriter who wrote the classic “Thirsty Boots.” He was on the Festival Express Tour (of “Might As Well” fame) across Canada along with the Dead, and I'm guessing that's where Weir and he met and concocted this piece. Happy to be corrected on that by anyone who knows better. Andersen and Weir share the lyric credit, and the music is credited to Weir. Once it appeared in the rotation, in September 1973, it stayed in the repertoire only as long as the Prelude did, dropping entirely in October 1974. The song addresses the seasons, and their changing mirrors the the singer's state of mind as he reflects on the coming of love, and maybe its going, too: a circle of seasons, and the blooming and fading of roses. I particularly like the line “And seasons will end in tumbled rhyme and little change, the wind and rain.” There's something very hopeful buried in the song's melancholy. Is that melancholy just a projection of mine? I think there's something about Weir's singing that gets at that emotion. Loss, and the hope that there might be new love. Weather Report Suite, Part 2 (“Let It Grow”) is a very different beast. It remained steadily in the rotation for the next 21 years after its debut, and the band played it 276 times. Its season of rarity was 1979, when it was played only three times, but otherwise, it was not far from the rotation. It could be stretched into a lengthy jamming tune (clocking at over 15 minutes several times), building to a thundering crescendo. And the “Weather Report” aspect of the song is what was really the most fun many times. Released on Wake of The Flood in 1973. WRS Prelude and Part I:Played:         46 timesFirst:  September 8, 1973 at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Uniondale, NY, USALast:  October 18, 1974 at Winterland Arena, San Francisco, CA, USA SHOW No. 3:                     Mississippi Half Step Uptown Toodeloo  (Second Set Opener/into Big River/Dark Star)                                    Track #17                                    3:17 – 4:55 Released on Wake of the Flood in 1973. Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo was first performed live by the Grateful Dead on July 16, 1972. The song has since been performed by a variety of artists.          George wrote the song while he was a member of the Mothers of Invention. When George sang an early version of the song for bandleader Frank Zappa, Zappa suggested that the guitarist form his own band rather than continue under Zappa's tutelage.[1] He did just that, and the song was subsequently recorded by Lowell's band Little Feat. The song was included on Little Feat's 1971 self-titled debut album. The band re-recorded the song at a slower tempo to much greater success on their 1972 Sailin' Shoes album. A live version recorded in 1977 appears on their 1978 album Waiting for Columbus. The lyrics are from the point of view of a truck driver who has driven from Tucson to Tucumcari (NM), Tehachapi (CA) to Tonopah (AZ)" and "smuggled some smokes and folks from Mexico"; the song has become a trucker anthem.  And of course, he asks for “weed, whites (speed) and wine” to get him through his drive. 1.      Using Marijuana Is Tied To Lower Consumption Of Alcohol, Opioids And Other Drugs, New Study Reveals 2.     Why Florida's Marijuana Legalization Ballot Initiative Failed Despite Trump Endorsement, Historic Funding And Majority Voter Support 3.     Marijuana Has ‘Great Deal Of Potential' To Treat Opioid Use Disorder, Study Finds, Predicting It'll Become More Common In Treatment 4.     Colorado Springs Voters Approve Two Contradictory Marijuana Ballot Measures To Both Allow And Ban Recreational Sales Strains of the week: Sub Zero - Sub Zero is a potent Indica-dominanthybrid cannabis strain that combines the robust genetics of Afghan, Colombian, and Mexican origins. This marijuana strain offers a complex flavor profile with notes of apple, menthol, chestnut, lime, and berry, providing a unique and refreshing sensory experience. The aroma of Sub Zero is as intriguing as its flavor, characterized by a rich combination of woody, earthy, and citrus notes, thanks to a terpene profile rich in Humulene, Limonene, Linalool, and Carene. These terpenes not only enhance the flavor but also contribute to the strain's therapeutic properties. Apple Fritter - Apple Fritter, also known as “Apple Fritters,” is a rare evenly balanced hybrid strain (50% indica/50% sativa) created through crossing the classic Sour Apple X Animal Cookies strains. Best known for making the High Times' 2016 “World's Strongest Strains” List, this baby brings on a hard-hitting high and super delicious flavor that will have you begging for more after just one taste. Extract:             Dulce Limon – hyrbrid sativa dominant            Pineapple Fizz – slightly indica dominant hybrid strain SHOW No. 4:                    Dark Star  (Mind Left Body Jam)                                                Track #18                                                34:45 – end This is the name given to a 4-chord sequence played as a jam by the Grateful Dead. It is thought by some to be related to the Paul Kantner song "Your Mind Has Left Your Body." The title "Mind Left Body Jam" was originally used by DeadBase. The first Grateful Dead CD to include a version was "Dozin' At The Knick", where the title was "Mud Love Buddy Jam" in a humorous reference to the DeadBase/taper title. But subsequent releases have adopted the "Mind Left Body Jam" title. Here, it comes out of a 36 minute Dark Star that many say is one of the best ever and links it to an excellent Eyes of the World.Fun to feature one of the band's thematic jams every now and then.  The truly improvisational side of the Dead and their live performances.  Played:  9 timesFirst:  October 19, 1973 at Jim Norick Arena, Oklahoma City, OK, USALast:  March 24, 1990 at Knickerbocker Arena, Albany, NY, USA                                                 INTO                                                 Eyes of the World  (into China Doll/Sugar Mag as second set closer)                                                Track #19                                                0:00 – 2:25 David Dodd:  “Eyes of the World” is a Robert Hunter lyric set by Jerry Garcia. It appeared in concert for the first time in that same show on February 9, 1973, at the Maples Pavilion at Stanford University, along with “They Love Each Other,” “China Doll,” “Here Comes Sunshine,” “Loose Lucy,” “Row Jimmy,” and “Wave That Flag.” Its final performance by the Dead was on July 6, 1995, at Riverport Amphitheatre, in Maryland Heights, Missouri, when it opened the second set, and led into “Unbroken Chain.” It was performed 381 times, with 49 of those performances occurring in 1973. It was released on “Wake of the Flood” in November, 1973. (I have begun to notice something I never saw before in the song statistics in Deadbase—the 49 performances in 1973 made me look twice at the song-by-song table of performances broken out by year in DeadBase X, which clearly shows the pattern of new songs being played in heavy rotation when they are first broken out, and then either falling away entirely, or settling into a more steady, less frequent pattern as the years go by. Makes absolute sense!) Sometimes criticized, lyrically, as being a bit too hippy-dippy for its own good, “Eyes of the World” might be heard as conveying a message of hope, viewing human consciousness as having value for the planet as a whole. There are echoes in the song of a wide range of literary and musical influences, from Blaise Pascal to (perhaps) Ken Kesey; from talk of a redeemer to the title of the song itself. In an interview, Hunter made an interesting statement about the “songs of our own,” which appear twice in “Eyes of the World.” He said that he thinks it's possible each of us may have some tune, or song, that we hum or sing to ourselves, nothing particularly amazing or fine, necessarily, that is our own song. Our song.  The song leaves plenty of room for our own interpretation of certain lines and sections. The verse about the redeemer fading away, being followed by a clay-laden wagon. The myriad of images of birds, beeches, flowers, seeds, horses.... One of my all time favorite songs, Dead or otherwise.  A perfect jam tune.  Great lyrics, fun sing along chorus and some of the finest music you will ever hear between the verses.  First really fell for it while at a small show one night my junior year at Michigan in the Michigan Union, a Cleveland based dead cover band call Oroboros.  We were all dancing and this tune just seemed to go on forever, it might have been whatever we were on at the time, but regardless, this tune really caught my attention.  I then did the standard Dead dive to find as many versions of the song as I could on the limited live Dead releases at that time and via show tapes.  Often followed Estimated Prophet in the first part of the second set, china/rider/estimated/eyes or scarlet/fire/estimated/eyes and sometimes even Help/Slip/Frank/Estimated/Eyes.  Regardless of where it appeared, hearing the opening notes was magical because you knew that for the next 10 – 12 minutes Jerry had you in the palm of his hand. This is just a great version, coming out of the Dark Star/Mind Left Body Jam and then continuing on into China Doll (two great Jerry tunes in a row!) and a standout Sugar Mag to close out the second set.  Any '73 Eyes will leave you in awe and this one is one of the best. Played:  382 timesFirst:  February 9, 1973 at Maples Pavilion, Stanford University, Stanford, CA, USALast:  July 6, 1995 at Riverport Amphitheatre, Maryland Heights (St. Louis), MO  OUTRO:                               And We Bid You Goodnight  (encore out of Uncle John's Band/Johnny B. Goode) 3 song encore!!                                                Track #25                                                :40 – 3:03 The Grateful Dead performed the song a number of times in the 1968-1970 and 1989-1990 periods but infrequently during the rest of their performing career. On Grateful Dead recordings the title used is either And We Bid You Goodnight or We Bid You Goodnight. The Grateful Dead version of this traditional 'lowering down' funeral song originates from a recording by Joseph Spence and the Pindar Family which was released in 1965. The title used on that recording, as on many others, is I Bid You Good Night. This song appears to share a common ancestry with the song Sleep On Beloved from North East England. I got to see it the first night at Alpine Valley in 1989 (the Dead's last year at Alpine) and it really caught the crowd off guard.  Great reaction from the Deadheads.  Kind of a chills down your spine thing.  I was with One armed Lary and Alex, both had been with us at Deer Creek right before.  Lary stayed for all three nights but Alex had to take off after the first show.  Great times.  Played:  69 timesFirst:  January 26, 1968 at Eagles Auditorium, Seattle, WA, USALast:  September 26, 1991 at Boston Garden, Boston, MA, USA  Thank you for listening.  Join us again next week for more music news, marijuana news and another featured Grateful Dead show. Have a great week, have fun, be safe and as always, enjoy your cannabis responsibly.   .Produced by PodConx Deadhead Cannabis Show - https://podconx.com/podcasts/deadhead-cannabis-showLarry Mishkin - https://podconx.com/guests/larry-mishkinRob Hunt - https://podconx.com/guests/rob-huntJay Blakesberg - https://podconx.com/guests/jay-blakesbergSound Designed by Jamie Humiston - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamie-humiston-91718b1b3/Recorded on Squadcast

However, I learned so much more about this plant's nuances over this month and through the shared experiences of my students from the Roots and Spheres course. Some of the themes of Lemon Balm were a sense of calm amidst chaos, restraint in anxiety, bee symbolism, and many circumstances where I was able to feel into the moment rather than overreact. I hope you find this video helpful, and if you struggle with anxiety, try Lemon Balm! I'm still flabbergasted at how difficult it is to choose wisely for myself at the dispensary… the overwhelming information scrolling so fast on screens so far away and then the names mean nothing but the tenders all talk like the stuff with the highest thc levels is the BEST! Well it isn't and it's not the thc that's giving you all those effects! Oh sure… thc has AN effect… actually several… but the terpenes have action and effect as well and that's the difference in using cannabis mindfully or not. Choosing the right effects for your issues. Let's get into it. 4 terpenes alll sedating: Beta-Caryophillene, Linalool, Myrcene, and Pinene when paired with Myrcene. 2 terpenes both uplifting: Limonene or Pinene (without Myrcene!) Photo: Pixabay Note: I recorded this right before I got sick so I sound a little 'throaty' but I hope you'll enjoy the show nonetheless! For the first show of 2022, we start out with a dorky one and answer the question: Where does aroma come from and are the things people describe in wine like roses, smoke, and pepper real or total BS?   We take the questions head on and give some answers that may surprise you! Enjoy and thanks for your continued support of the show and all we do!   Here are the show notes:  We start with the basic, defining aroma, as I do in the Wine for Normal People book: The smells unique to the grape variety, demonstrated in a varietal wine in its youth.   We discuss perception, wine tasting, and then I review some very cool findings from this article, “Aroma Compounds in Wine” By Fengmei Zhu, Bin Du and Jun Li, Published: October 19th 2016   "File:Head Olfactory Nerve Labeled.png" by Patrick J. Lynch, medical illustrator is licensed under CC BY 2.5 At a high level we talk about aromas from the grape, from yeast and enzymes, from amino acids, and those from malolactic fermentation. We talk about the effects of weather and soil briefly as well.   Then we go through the laundry list of compounds in wine, and what each brings to the aroma, bouquet, and flavor:   Terpenes: In grape skins also in fruits, flowers, leaves of some plants. Big component of aromatic whites – Muscat, Gewurztraminer, Muscat, Riesling. Includes: Linalool: When in contact with other things in the wine, makes lavender, orange blossom, lily, bay leaf notes Geraniol: Rose petal smell Nerol and citronellol:Floral, citrus notes, also in flowers and fruit Limonene and citral: Found in citrus peel Hotrienol: Elderflower, gooseberry 1,8-cineole and alpha-pinene:Eucalyptus, garrigue (airborne and can cling to the skin of grapes)   Rotundone: In skins, aroma of peppercorns, particularly white pepper Photo: Pixabay Aldehydes: Hexanal and hexenal: Fresh cut grass, tomato leaf Vanillin:Vanilla beans, vanilla Benzaldehyde:Bitter almond or marzipan in Italian white wines Furfural: Dried wood, caramel, oak     Pyrazines/ Methoxypyrazines:  Green bell pepper, herbaceous notes   Esters: Created by reactions between alcohols and acids Primary fruit aromas like apple, orange, citrus, banana, pear   Photo: Pixabay Ketones and diketones: Beta-ionone: Violets, dark flowers Diacetyl: Butter, creaminess in wine - byproduct of malolactic fermentation. When combined with new American oak with its vanilla- nut notes - like buttered popcorn     Thiols/Mercaptans: Volatile sulfur compounds in grapes, released by fermentation (when bad – like garlic or onion!) 3MH (3-mercaptohexan-1-ol):Passion fruit 3MHA (3-mercaptohexyl acetate):Guava and gooseberry 4MMP (4-mercapto-4-methylpentan-2-one): Blackcurrant (Cab)   Lactones Sotolon:Sauternes, Madeira  -- either Botrytis or age has an effect here - spice, nuts, maple syrup Octalactone:  Coconut notes   Phenols are derived from oak aging:  Guaiacol: Smoke, roasted, toasty notes Eugenol: Clove   Other common wine aroma compounds TDN (1,1,6-trimethyl-1,2-dihydronaphthalene): Petrol or kerosene in Riesling Noriosoprenoids: Spice, raspberry, rose, vanilla Photo: Pixabay   What's the point of this show? Forget all the technical terms and just know: what you are tasting and smelling is based on something REAL -- not some nonsense made up by wine snobs. There is a legitimate reason for why wine smells the way it does!    _____________________________________________ If you think our podcast is worth the price of a bottle or two of wine a year, please become a member of Patreon... you'll get even more great content, live interactions and classes!  www.patreon.com/winefornormalpeople     To register for an AWESOME, LIVE WFNP class with Elizabeth go to: www.winefornormalpeople.com/classes   ___________________________________________________________ Sources: Scientific Papers Series Management, Economic Engineering in Agriculture and Rural Development Vol. 18, Issue 4, 2018 PRINT ISSN 2284-7995, E-ISSN 2285-3952 423 AROMATIC COMPOUNDS IN WINES Luminita VISAN1 , Radiana-Maria TAMBA-BEREHOIU1 , Ciprian Nicolae Wine Enthusiast, The Science Behind the Main Wine Aromas, Explained, ANNE KREBIEHL MW -- The source for this article seems to be the article above, which I also used, but it's a handy, quick summary of the more academic one above!

We also have a flower review on Sherbert by NOBO. Is Delta 8 getting Banned in Michigan? What really is going on with the Covert Cups recall here in Michigan. All this and more in the newest episode. Sherbert Strain Review Cannadave & Groovee review the cannabis strain Sherbert. Sherbert was grown by NOBO and we bought it at their Muskegon location. Sherbert is a cross between Girl Scout Cookies and Pink Panties, it's also known as Sunset Sherbert. This specific strain has a gassy & Limonene terpene profile. Have you tried Sherbert before? If so is it one of your top strains? Cannadave & Groovee talk about what makes Sherbert so unique & does it pass the MiCannaCast Strain Review. Tune in and Find out. Muskegon Cannabis The Westside of Michigan is a hub for cannabis spots. We stopped in at Muskegon and were wowed away by all the cannabis companies out there. It had tons of different shops and we were able to hit a couple of them.  The first stop we stopped in was NOBO. NOBO is about the quality of the Flower they produce. We had on Alan Bonsett Owner/Founder of NOBO a brand from Colorado that has entered the Michigan market. We reviewed the Sherbert and the Truffle pig products of NOBO. The overall shop was neat, friendly staff and knowledgeable, they also have deals and grams can cost around 10.40 for one. The Second Shop was Timber Cannabis, a nice spot, and friendly staff was there. They are vertically integrated like NOBO but didn't have any flowers of their own yet. They're currently in the process of growing and harvesting their first batch in the coming months. They based their cannabis on how it made you feel instead of Indica & Sativa. Cannadave ended up getting an 8yth of Michigrown Runtz to try out which was pretty good. The Third shop was Redbud Roots. Very cool-looking shop as well, we didn't get much from this shop. Groovee picked up some Gorilla Glue wax which is reviewed on the CannaCon episode towards the end. See What Groovee thought of the wax! Finally the last stop was Rair, which also was vertical integrated carrying mostly their own in-house product. We picked out a couple of grams of Flower Platinum Garlic & Glue, as well as some Live Rosin of Plantium Garlic. The platinum garlic had a  unique taste definitely a spicy & limonene taste. Covert Cups Recall A big recall in Michigan happened the other day to a product we like to eat, which is Covert Cups. They're edibles two pack 50mg a piece comes in a couple of different flavors. The state recalled them over packaging because it didn't match up to the original package. Berg from Medical Mondays had a great interview with Chris from Covert Cups to discuss what truly happened. The company that produced the cups Euclid lost their license temporarily because of the test and not good healthy practices happening inside the facility. The workers licked the spatula, touched their phones, & didn't wear practical clothing inside the facility. This is the same company that was suspended last year for two weeks due to an employee licking tons of pre roll joints during the pandemic. We shall see what happens here in the future and we will keep you updated. Delta 8  Delta 8 is Not getting banned in the State of Michigan. Governor Whitmer came out with a response saying we aren't banning it like we originally thought. The state is taking a different approach to have Delta 8 regulated in the state. This is a great step for our state to lead the way with Delta 8, we actually reviewed the vape oil of Delta 8 before we thought it was going to get banned. The MRA will be regulating the Delta 8 testing it just like the medical and adult-use cannabis gets tested through that program too.

Travel Gluten Free gives you valuable information from finding a safe restaurant to knowing what food is safe to eat when you travel; I'll be with you every step of the way on your gluten-free journey. Lead your gluten-free life, don't let being gluten-free lead your life. Enjoy Food, Enjoy Travel, and Enjoy Life with your show host, Elikqitie!   In this episode, I'm chatting with Tim Pickett, who is the founder of the Utah Therapeutic Center. Tim sees patients with chronic illnesses such as chronic pain, auto-immune diseases and terminally ill patients, all of whom are seeking relief from their symptoms without using pharmaceutical drugs.   What is Medical Cannabis?   Medical cannabis is using the marijuana plant and extracting the healthy, inflammation-fighting components of the plant. You can receive medical cannabis in tinctures, edibles, whole flowers, vape cartridges, balms, and sprays. “The art of Medical Marijuana and plant-based medicine is to ascertain what ratio and strain might be right for the patient, how best to administer the plant as medicine, and how to utilize patient feedback to get the best outcome.”   Medical Cannabis is different from using marijuana for recreational use. With medical cannabis, patients are using this plant for relief of symptoms, not to get high. If you're looking to find relief from your chronic condition and find that you want to balance the THC in your cannabis, you can try using CBD for a more balanced effect.   How Can I Get a Medical Marijuana Card?   In Utah, you have to qualify under one of the qualifying conditions to get a medical marijuana card. These conditions are Aids, Alzheimer's, chronic pain, terminal illness, ALS, Autism, Chron's, Ulcerative Colitis, seizures, MS, PTSD, muscle spasms, and cancer. To apply for a card, you must have a QMP - a qualified medical provider - who has taken and passed the certification to recommend medical cannabis. I've had only positive experiences at the Utah Therapeutic Clinic with their caring and professional staff.   Once you have been approved for a medical marijuana card, you can meet with a pharmacist at the dispensary located near you to find out which types of cannabis are a good fit for your specific symptoms.    Where Can I Find Medical Marijuana in Utah?   There are almost ten dispensaries located and dispersed throughout Utah. My go to pharmacy is Deseret Wellness in Park City. You can find a list of Utah licensed dispensaries on the Utah Therapeutic Website.   How Should I Dose My Medical Marijuana?   Like other medicinals used, you always want to start with small doses and work your way up. Also, you'll want to try one or two strains at first, then change up to or add medical cannabis as needed. I've had great results using Limonene during the day for depression and their 1:10 tincture for joint pain. In addition, I've been getting much better quality sleep using the Dragonfly Bites, which are edibles.   Why Utah Therapeutic Center for Medical Cannabis?   While you can choose from any medical provider in Utah, my girlfriend recommended Utah Therapeutic Center as she loved their professional customer service. I was really impressed with how much time they spent listening to my health issues and how well they guided me through the process.   Get $25 Off Your First Appointment with Utah Therapeutic Health Center   Mention you heard UTHC on the Travel Gluten Free Podcast and you'll receive $25 off your new patient visit. In episode 71 of HealingMatters, Jason talks about how to stop arthritis pain in 30 days! Arthritis is caused by an infection and poor diet that causes mineral loss. There are two types of arthritis: Rheumatoid arthritis and Osteoarthritis. Jason will list six steps to stop arthritis pain and Premier Research Labs Supplements to support each step. Rheumatoid Arthritis is general fatigue, swelling with red, hot, and tender joints. Moving the joints makes it feel better. Osteoarthritis is arthritis in the bones and cartilage. Moving the body makes it hurt more. Bacteria and Viruses live in the joints and create waste products that erode the joints and bones. Excessive protein consumption is often blamed but it's actually that the body can't digest the protein and more waste products flood the liver with toxins. Gout is an example of mineral deposits in the joint/cartilage creating cracking, rough, painful joints. Six Steps to Reduce Pain: 1. Address Infection in the gut and the whole body. Premier Research Labs makes Olive Leaf, Allicidin, HCL, and OsteoVen to reduce infection. 2. Liver and Gallbladder Toxicity. The liver is a filter. If it's too full with toxins, it can't do its job. Even if you've had your Gallbladder removed, you can still produce bile. Premier Research Labs Makes GallBladder ND and Liver ND. 3. Overtaxed Adrenal Glands from too much sugar, caffeine, stress, and poor sleep. Watch my video on SLEEP: https://youtu.be/uExqGJ5z1d8 Premier Research Labs AdreneVen, and Pink Salt. 4. Food Allergies are wrecking your health with inflammation. Take a 30 day break from Gluten/Wheat, Dairy and Sugar. Sugar isn't really an allergy but it feeds the bacteria and yeast that excrete toxins. Premier Research Labs AllerCaps. 5. Dehydration! Drink more water! 6. Inflammation causes damage and infection. Premier Research Labs Phytozymes (cleans up joints without surgery), pH Minerals, Deltanol, and Magnesium. Fermented Turmeric, DHA, and EPA take at least 30 days to get into your system. You can also mix Neem Oil and Limonene to use topically on the joints. Keep moving, walking, stretching, get fresh air and massages. What are terpenes and how important are they to the cannabis plant? This week we're joined by Dr. Ethan Russo, physician, researcher, and leading expert in the field of Medicinal Cannabis. In this episode, we discuss all things terpenoid, including how they are produced, varieties commonly found in cannabis, and their therapeutic benefits. Episode SummaryDr. Russo was classically trained as a neurologist, but turned back to a teenage interest in medicinal plants when he realised he was prescribing increasingly toxic drugs to his patients. In the early 90's he became interested in treating headaches and migraines, and took research trips to the Amazon rainforest in Peru to work with native tribes who treated the condition with botanicals. When he returned to the USA he knew that he wanted to change his career path, and became interested in the medicinal properties of essential oils, terpenes and terpenoids.Dr. Russo became interested in using cannabis medicinally and started the Journal of Cannabis Therapeutics. He quickly became an expert in the field, and worked as a consultant for GW Pharmaceuticals who had obtained a permit to grow cannabis for medicinal purposes in 1998.Later on he became a Senior Medical Advisor and was heavily involved with the development of Sativex and Epidiolex. The first cannabis derived pharmaceutical approved by the FDA was Epidiolex, which contains a 98% pure cannabidiol compound and is used to treat Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome. To get a drug approved by the FDA often requires between 10 and 12 years of research and between $700m and $1.2bn of expenditure.Dr. Russo has recently founded CReDO Science, who create innovative products and services related to cannabis and the endocannabinoid system, outside the realm of THC. Projects include over the counter treatments, novel extraction techniques, nutritional cannabis products, cannabis based disinfectant, and diagnostic tests. Terpenes are the aromatic components of plants which can be found in the leaves, bark, flowers and sometimes roots. They are used in aromatherapy which is the science of essential oils. An example of this is lemon oil, which denotes cleanliness and is a cleaning agent. The terpene responsible for this aroma is Limonene, which can be found in citrus fruits.Selective breeding for high THC strains means that many of the new strains have a dominant terpene of Myrcene, which interacts with THC to produce sedative effects.Dr. Russo is currently conducting a piece of research which looks into the effects of using THC with differing terpenoids, using memory tests as a measure. There are over 20,000 identified terpenoids, none of which (so far) are unique to cannabis. Alpha Pinene and Limonene are the most abundant in nature but are not found in cannabis very often. In cannabis, Myrcene and Caryophyllene are often found, which interact with CB2 receptors. Caryophyllene is both a terpene and a cannabinoid. In any cannabis sample, there are on average 3-5 prominent terpenoids along with trace amounts of many more.Terpenes act as a defence mechanism for plants, their strong smells either promote pollination, deter predation by insects or to prevent grazing by mammals. Cannabinoids and Terpenoids are both produced in Capitate Glandular Trichomes which are most abundant in unfertilised female plants. Many terpenes have pain reducing effects which work through distinct mechanisms. Quotables‘Terpenes are critical components to the medicinal effects of cannabis' 04:20‘Essential oils are extremely potent, so the amounts involved are tiny' 22:25

World Coffee Research is working to improve the genetic potential of coffee cup quality. To start this task, you first need to define the meaning of “quality.” WCR believes it is a market-driven definition and organized new protocols to assess quality from the perspective of the coffee industry. With experts and partners, WCR produced the coffee lexicon that allows an objective analytic description of coffee quality attributes. In their presentation, Hanna Neuschwander discussed these innovations and shared some lessons learned, including the latest results deriving from these methods and advances on the molecular basis of cup quality. In particular, Hanna highlights the burgeoning importance of some specific volatile compounds like Limonene. These results are not an end but a beginning; an opportunity for further studies to find out the molecular markers or genes related to cup quality in general. Hanna Neuschwander is the communications director for World Coffee Research, a research nonprofit that works to secure the future of coffee. She writes and speaks globally about coffee science and agriculture. Her writing and commentary has appeared in the Art of Eating, Time Magazine, CNN, BCC, Portland Monthly, and many others. Limonene: Health Benefits And Uses Of An Essential Oils Constituent

Limonene is one of hundreds of constituents found in essential oils. As an individual compound, or as part of a "whole" essential oil, it provides numerous health benefits which have helped bring attention to the therapeutic benefits of the oils themselves. In this article, I'll cover some of those health benefits, as well as explain where to find limonene and how to determine how much you get if you use essential oils. While essential oils provide a plethora of health benefits when used as a "whole" essential oil, it's sometimes easier to understand how the individual compounds affect our health. That's just how nutrition science and research works. For example, we know that animal-based proteins like steak, bison, and whey are an important part of a healthy, high-protein diet, because researchers have studied the effects of the essential amino acids, creatine, and other nutrients found in those foods. However, that doesn't mean you should only eat the amino acids and creatine. Animal protein contains many other compounds that enhance health, which is why you eat the whole food and supplement your diet with creatine, amino acids, omega-3s, and other micronutrient, botanicals, and ergogenic compounds. It's the same thing with essential oils. While there could be some benefit to supplementing with limonene alone, there's also plenty of evidence to show why using the whole essential oil would be better.  Read also: Essential Oils For Fitness: Research, Anecdotal Evidence, Experimentation. With all that said, let's get to the topic of today's article: d-limonene. What is d-Limonene? Though it's found in another isomer form, r-limonene, the more prevalent and studied form is d-limonene. For readability, I simply use limonene in this article, with the understanding I'm referring to d-limonene. d-limonene is one of the most common terpenes found in nature. But, what the heck is a terpene? A terpene a class of volatile compounds commonly made by coniferous trees and citrus fruits. Because of their volatility, they quickly dissipate when exposed to the air, which is why you don't find them in dried herbs. Terpenes have a strong odor designed to ward off pests in plants, and are used medicinally and supplementally. Limonene is one of those terpenes, and based on the name of it, you might (accurately) guess that it smells like somewhat like lemon. Where Do You Get Limonene? Though you’re not getting therapeutic doses, you’re probably consuming more limonene than you realize. It’s used as a fragrance and flavor in a number of foods, such as candy, gum, soft drinks, ice cream, and (hopefully you don’t drink it, but…) fruit juice. Aside from food and dietary supplements, limonene is also used as a healthier cleaning substance in household products, manufacturing, and industrial printing, as a degreaser for metals, and in paint as a solvent. You'll also see limonene on the label of shampoos, soaps, fragrances, and other personal care products.  The most abundant sources of limonene are the peels of citrus fruits (which is where the essential oils are derived), dill, caraway, fennel, celery, and turpentine, not that you should consume turpentine. For commercial and industrial use, most limonene comes from orange essential oil. The table below outlines some of the most concentrated sources of limonene.  Essential OilConcentrationBergamot (Citrus bergamia)40%Bitter Orange (citrus aurantium)97%Elemi (Canarium luzonicum)42%Grapefruit (Citrus paradisii)93%Lemon (Citrus limon)53%Orange (Citrus sinuses)93%Pomelo (Citrus grandis)75% The body metabolizes limonene quickly, and within 24 hours, clears almost all of the limonene from a single dose. Health Benefits of D-Limonene The health benefits of limonene described below are connected to the internal use, or consumption of limonene. Though the inhalation of limonene-containing essential oils causes numerous physiological effects,

When you think of lemons and cancer, the organization “Alex’s Lemonade Stand” may come to mind. But more than just a way to raise funds for cancer research, lemons can fight cancer by eating them too. Today we will be talking about the real, physical benefits lemons have on the body, and the most effective way to get the most out of this amazing fruit! Lemons vs Cancer Everything people choose to eat either contributes to disease or helps to fight it. Disease cannot live in an alkaline body where it actually feeds disease in an acidic state. Lemons are one of the most alkalizing foods you can consume. It may seem counterintuitive because of it’s sour taste, but it turns alkaline once ingested. Lemons are a citrus fruit, high in vitamin C, which is great for giving our body the immune boost it needs to stay in check. When vitamin C levels are low, little to no repair happens in the body. Lemons are also high in potassium, which stimulates brain and nerve function. Potassium helps reduce free radicals, increases red blood cell production and controls blood pressure. What does all this mean in real-talk? More energy, clearer skin, anti-aging properties, less sickness, less stress, and more focus! Um, yes please! One very simple and inexpensive way I tell my clients to help detoxify their system is to drink warm or hot lemon water throughout the day for a period of two weeks. The trick here is of course not to drink any other beverages during that time. So no juices, coffee, alcohol or ice teas, hot cocoa etc, just sip lemon water throughout the day. This is especially helpful after the holidays or any other time of year you may have overdone the cookies and made a little “too merry”! Make sure the lemon is not from a container of lemon juice, but from a piece of whole lemon. So what’s this about cancer? Well, the compounds found in lemon peels are a thousand times more powerful than Adriamycin, a common drug used in chemotherapy. In fact, Lemons contain 22 anti-cancer compounds, including limonene, citrus pectin and flavonol glycosides which stop the division of cancer cells. Limonene seeks to destroy the malignant cells while leaving behind the healthy cells, undamaged. Let me be clear. I am not suggesting that anyone stop chemotherapy and just eat lemons. This is definitely one more simple way to help fight the disease. In fact, according to The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization of Australia, citrus fruits redice the risk of some cancers by 50 percent. These scientists report that citrus fruits are most protective against stomach, mouth, larynx and pharynx cancers. One of the best ways to consume this superfood is to first rinse, then freeze the fruit whole. Once completely frozen, grate the entire lemon along with its peel. Then feel free to use the shredded lemon as a salad topper, in your morning smoothie, in a cup of hot water or tea, or in various other recipes. https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/detox2018 Well, I've been at it again folks: putting my mind and muscles through a brutal ringer for the sake of science.  In my recent post "", you learned how Men's Health magazine recently sent me on a 3 month global expedition to do everything a fella could possibly to do increase testosterone, size, orgasm quality, libido and a host of other manhood related parameters - including stem cell injections, acoustic sound wave therapy, red light blasting and beyond. Shortly after completing that article, I received my next writing assignment: outfit my pantry with an arsenal of the latest trendy hangover cures - from Oriental raisin extract hovenia dulcis to prickly pear concentrated extract to self-administered Myer's cocktail IV's - then engage in extreme alcohol hedonism and see what happens (). So, after all this brutality, I've decided to kick off 2018 by pushing the reboot button and cleaning up my entire system with a giant, scientifically proven detoxification mop, and I'm inviting you to join me. In this article, you'll learn why detoxification is not a myth, exactly why you should seriously consider detoxing (even if you live an ultra-clean lifestyle and don't necessarily treat your body as an N=1 guinea pig like I do), and how I'm personally going to detox using a relatively unique approach. Is Detoxification A Myth? A few years ago, The Guardian released an article entitled: ? In the article, the author says that: “...detoxing — the idea that you can flush your system of impurities and leave your organs squeaky clean and raring to go — is a scam. It’s a pseudo-medical concept designed to sell you things.” So is this true? Can you really not detox your body? As you go into the New Year, during which detox diets and claims are sure to surround you, it’s important to know the truth about detoxing. It’s important to begin with an understanding of what toxins actually are. No matter how “clean” you live your life, just about everybody shows some evidence of a buildup of toxins. When the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conducted the , they found some pretty shocking results. On average, the CDC’s report found 212 chemicals in people’s blood or urine, 75 of which had never before been measured in the U.S. population. The chemicals included: Acrylamide (formed when foods are baked or fried at high temperatures, and as a byproduct of cigarette smoke) Arsenic, found in many home-building products Environmental phenols, including bisphenol A (found in plastics, food packaging and epoxy resins) and triclosan (used as an antibacterial agent in personal care products such as toothpaste and hand soap) Perchlorate, used in airplane fuel, explosives and fireworks Perfluorinated chemicals, used to create non-stick cookware Polybrominated diphenyl ethers, used in fire retardants found in consumer products such as mattresses Volatile organic compounds (VOC’s), found in paints, air fresheners, cleaning products, cosmetics, upholstery fabrics, carpets, dry-cleaned clothing, wood preservatives, and paint strippers When you put all these together, these chemicals can potentially present a toxic burden to the human body, and (as the CDC has found) can accumulate in your body’s blood, urine and tissue — possibly one reason why the plastic-based versions of these chemicals are sometimes referred to as “obesogens,” due to the . While your body does actually have detoxification organs (your liver and kidney) that can process many of these chemicals and toxins, they can potentially cause medical problems if your liver and kidneys are not functioning properly or are overburdened with a poor diet.  for your blood and removing wastes and excess water from the body, it’s the liver that has an incredibly important job when it comes to detoxification. Along with filtering your blood to remove toxins, your . During phase 1, toxins are neutralized and broken into smaller fragments. Then, in phase 2 they are bound to other molecules, creating a new non-toxic molecule that can be excreted in your bile, urine or stool. But order for this liver detoxification to work properly, your body must have adequate nutrients. If not, , which can leave toxic substances to build up in your body. There are specific nutrients that support both pathways. For example: Phase 1: B-Vitamins (B2, B3, B6, B12, folic acid) Flavonoids, found in fruits and vegetables Foods rich in vitamins A, C and E (eg, carrots, oranges, wheat germ, almonds) Glutathione, found in avocado, watermelon, asparagus, walnuts, fresh fruits and veggies, and the nutrients n-acetylcysteine, cysteine and methionine. Branched chain amino acids, found in animal protein (dairy products, red meat, eggs and whey protein) Phospholipids, found in eggs, meats, organ meats, fish and soybeans Phase 2: Indole-3-carbinol, found in cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts Limonene, found in oranges, tangerines, caraway seeds and dill seeds Glutathione, found in avocado, watermelon, asparagus, walnuts, fresh fruits and veggies. Fish oil Amino acids from protein  have demonstrated the  for supporting proper liver detox pathways. In addition, as you can learn in , Dr. Bryan Walsh has introduced the concept of a third "Phase 3" detoxification pathway. Now that you understand detoxification, let's delve into how detoxification products are actually supposed to work. The first claim in the article from The Guardian is based on a quote from , a professor of complementary medicine at Exeter University. He says: “...there are two types of detox: one is respectable and the other isn’t. The respectable one is the medical treatment of people with life-threatening drug addictions. The other is the word being hijacked by entrepreneurs, quacks and charlatans to sell a bogus treatment that allegedly detoxifies your body of toxins you’re supposed to have accumulated.” The article goes on to explain that when it comes to products that range from dietary supplements to smoothies and shampoos, not one of the manufacturers can actually define what they meant by detoxification, or name the toxins these products are supposed to remove. However, just because a manufacturer of — say — spirulina powder (a popular green powder found in the detox section of many health foods stores) can’t say how it works, doesn’t mean there isn’t scientific evidence for it’s potential to remove toxins from the body. For example, . It does this via a process called ion-exchange binding, and can . 100 micrograms (a very small amount) of spirulina hexane extract has been shown to . At a does of 250-500 milligrams per kilogram of body weight, spirulina has been shown to , and it has also been noted to , and . Granted, spirulina is one of the few molecules in existence that actually has a large body of evidence to support it’s detoxifying activity, but other compounds such as ,  and  have also been clinically proven to reduce heavy metal buildup. And while heavy metals are only one form of a toxin that can accumulate in your tissues, there is no doubt that science has proven that these toxins can indeed be removed via the use of these specific “detox” compounds found in nature. So when the article in The Guardian “guffaws” at the ideas of superfoods such as spirulina, I would actually beg to differ. Or take milk thistle extract, another popular detox or cleansing supplement. While the article in The Guardian would have you to believe there is no value whatsoever in consuming this type of nutrient,  that milk thistle actually protects and promotes the growth of liver cells, fights oxidation (a process that damages cells), and actually blocks toxins from entering the cell membrane. Silymarins, a group of antioxidants extracted from the seeds of milk thistle, have antioxidant properties several times greater than that of vitamins C and E, with . Milk thistle also helps to , which is necessary for phase 2 liver detoxification to be completed. As you can see from the two simple examples of spirulina and milk thistle, things aren’t quite as simple as painting with a broad brush and saying that detox supplements and diets simply don’t work. While the detox evidence for — say — cayenne pepper and maple syrup juice really doesn’t exist, evidence for other nutrients actually does exist. The article in The Guardian then goes on to address colon cleanses, noting that: “...proponents will tell you that mischievous plaques of impacted poo can lurk in your colon for months or years and pump disease-causing toxins back into your system. Pay them a small fee, though, and they’ll insert a hose up your bottom and wash them all away.” And also: “Some colon-cleansing tablets contain a polymerising agent that turns your faeces into something like a plastic, so that when a massive rubbery poo snake slithers into your toilet you can stare back at it and feel vindicated in your purchase.” When you think about it, the idea of toxins being somehow reabsorbed by your body as they sit in your colon actually makes some sense. After all, rectal suppositories are used to rapidly administer drugs — so if drugs can enter your bloodstream from your colon, it’s certainly possible that toxins could be entering too. However, your colon is equipped with several natural mechanisms to keep toxins from building up. For example: . . I personally suspect that if colon cleansing or enemas have any effect in making you feel like you have more energy or have been “cleansed”, it is more likely to do with an , along with , which can indeed improve digestion, have a laxative effect, relieve constipation and cause you to go to the bathroom. Sure, this could potentially make you feel better by allowing you to better digest your food, or to even pass some feces that may have built up over the past few days, but I’d have to agree with the article in The Guardian that there is no evidence that poo can simply sit inside you for years, slowly rotting and toxifying your body. So should you detox? Ultimately, as the article in The Guardian alludes to, your body has it’s own powerful methods of detoxification — and can activate these methods without the use of fancy diets or . These methods primarily come in the form of your liver and your kidneys. For example, your liver prevents pathogens from passing into your bloodstream, processes environmental toxins for safe removal, and helps to rid your body of excess nitrogen that build up from the breakdown of proteins and amino acids. Your kidneys filter blood, remove excess water, pass urea (which is a toxin that builds up as a byproduct of protein breakdown), and sends this all out of your body via your urine. So if you eat foods that support your liver and kidneys, or avoid foods that stress your liver and kidneys, you’re already detoxing every day — and theoretically, unless you’ve gone through something like a serious bout of alcoholism or heavy metal toxicity, you don’t really need any fancy herbal blends or colonic cleanses (at least, that's what I used to think. More on that in a second...as it may not be quite that simple). But first - to start simple indeed: for your liver, you can do things like avoid high amounts of omega-6 polyunsaturated fats from processed and packaged foods like canola oil and French fries, and instead eat those type of fats from fish, meat, seeds and nuts. You can avoid high amounts of fructose and sugar, limit alcohol, consume plenty of egg yolks (which contain choline that your liver uses to process fats), eat good, organic liver every now and then and . For your kidneys, you can limit , drink plenty of water, limit alcohol intake, and — if you are predisposed to renal issues — limit  (e.g. more than 200g/day of protein). So, as The Guardian article notes, many popular detox and cleansing diets probably feel beneficial very much in part because of what they eliminate. All the processed fats, high fructose corn syrup, alcohol, candy, soda, commercial meat and snack foods you’re eliminating on a detox diet are giving your liver and kidneys a chance to step up and do their normal detoxification duties, since they’re no longer overburdened with bad food and not enough micronutrients and minerals to support their normal function. But alas, the plot thickens, and it turns out that in our modern, post-industrial, radiated, metal-laden, polluted, glyphosate-sprayed, GMO-concentrated era, you may need to engage in a bit of better living through science and supplementation to truly detox. The Detoxification Plot Thickens So you eat a clean diet, take care of your liver and kidney's, and you don't need to detox, right? As I alluded to above, it's likely not that simple. See, when I interviewed Dr. Dan Pompa in the podcast episode “, he described a serious issue called “cellular toxicity” and explained why it is an underlying cause of numerous health issues, including gut problems, thyroid issues, sluggish metabolism, brain fog and much more. Once again, the cause of this modern phenomenon is not "woo-woo" or non-quantifiable toxins, but rather measurable physical compounds: plastics, phytoestrogens, metals, pharmaceuticals, herbicides, pesticides and all manner of other chemicals that can overwhelm our liver, kidneys and built-in detoxification system. And what’s especially unfair is that you and me (even when we’re living a clean lifestyle) have to get exposed to these toxins on a constant daily basis, whether from brake dust on car roads, or mercury from electronic equipment, or herbicides on the apples at our friend’s house, or estrogens in the shampoo at the hotel, or mold on the carpeting at the gym (don't even get me started on gyms - just read this two part series  on gym issue - and )…you get the idea. So even if your waistline and fat cell storage survived the holidays, the same might not be said for your brain, your lungs and the rest of your insides. In other words, over the past year, was your body ever exposed to over-processed and refined foods, chemical additives, antibiotics and pharmaceuticals, pesticides, herbicides, chlorinated water, artificial sweeteners or anything else that might remotely be consider “unnatural”? Did you drink many diet sodas? Eat much non-organic or farm-raised meat? Travel extensively? Chomp on fruits and vegetables without washing them? Get sick and have to get on a drug protocol? Engage in a few excessive nights of drinking? Get exposed to second-hand smoke? Spend much time around cleaning supplies? You get the idea. To make matters even worse, the world’s largest study on air pollution, just , found that when you breathe the average air in the average city (with all other variables held constant, such as eating healthy and exercising) you develop a huge risk for high blood pressure. How? In the study, the biological mechanisms for the adverse effect of air pollution on the functioning of the heart and blood vessels included: -Local and systemic inflammation… -Oxidative stress (a build-up of damaging molecules in the body)… -An imbalance in correct functioning of the nervous system… This also means that no matter how healthy you eat, how much you workout or how clean your water is, you’re still getting blasted with toxins from air pollutant every time you step into a city, or airport, or public gym, or just about anywhere else they aren’t using massive HEPA filters. How I’m Going To Detox This Year So why am I telling you all this? Frankly, everything that you've just read about is exactly I’m going to detox my entire body and brain beginning this February of 2018, and . That’s right, . And I’m not going to do just any ol’ detox like putting cayenne pepper into a nasty concoction or pushing giant grocery shopping carts full of random herbs through the supermarket. , these popular detoxes can actually release toxins from tissues such as fat cells and shove them into the brain, causing even more damage and serious brain and body repercussions that include permanent brain fog, weight gain, skin breakouts, mood disorders, and much more. Instead, I’m partnering up with one of the most brilliant detox minds on the face of the planet: the guy I mentioned earlier named , and Dr. Pompa's is going to walk us through the exact brain and body detox program that he’s studied and perfected for years. But I'm not going to stop there. I’m then going to combine Dr. Pompa's proven detox formula with my own exercise and biohacking protocols so that I can completely clean up my body without losing fitness by doing only, say, hot yoga and trampolining for weeks upon weeks. See, I don’t want to come out of my detox having lost my muscle or having to huff and puff whenever I climb a flight of stairs, so I’m pulling out all my fitness tricks that allow me to sculpt my body while I detox, without actually causing adrenal fatigue issues or ruining the detox protocol. I going to incorporate many of the similar modifications that I included in my detox last year, which you can , where you'll discover: -The 5 strategies I’m personally using to ensure I don’t lose fitness or muscle during my detox… -How fringe techniques like dry skin brushing, rebounding and infrared therapy can maximize the effectiveness of a detox… -The exact workouts I’ll be performing during my detox… -Whether or not you should use the dietary strategy of ketosis during a detox… -The best fasting strategy to use during a detox… -How meditation can fit perfectly into a detox program… -How oil pulling can assist with detox… -Why fermented foods are crucial during a detox… -The crazy, unique tea blends I’ll be using to accelerate my detox and wean myself off coffee… -And much more!  During that episode, you'll learn why I'm going to incorporate strategies such as: – – – – – – – – – – Now don't worry - if this all sounds crazy complex or if you don't have time to go back and listen to that podcast, then please understand that I've taken all the guesswork out of it for you, and out in an easy-to-understand and simple-to-use dashboard, training plan, and downloadable pdf's. You simply wake up each day, and do exactly what the plan says, and you can, of course, look forward at the beginning of each week to preview the entire program. Episode 42 has Casey & Tyler talking about listeners and then imbibing Obama Kush from Bridge City Collective with Royal Highness hash from Oregon Coast Cannabis. Then they chat about pairing 10 #cannabis strains with five kinds of Girl Scout Cookies. They talk about: Samoas with Hindu Kush (6:05), Samoas with Chocolate Chunk (7:47), Tagalongs with Trainwreck (9:46), Tagalongs with OG Kush (12:15), Do-si-dos with Jack Flash (13:59), Do-si-dos with Burmese Kush (15:48), Thin Mints with Black Betty (17:45), Thin Mints with God Bud (19:57), Toffee-tastic with White Widow (20:32), Toffee-tastic with Chocolate Cream (21:32), “They’re (the cookies) shit Casey, don’t lie to me.” (22:01), Casey & a letter to the editor (25:40). Last year, Casey and I did Girl Scout and cannabis pairing for Willamette Week. Below are our original notes. Samoas Pairing Notes Hindu Kush was chosen for its tasty and stinky combination of sweet, nutty and earthy flavors. It made sense that the toasted coconut in the cookie would pair well because it takes on the flavor of other foods well. Major terpenes: Caryophyllene, Pinene, Humulene Chocolate Chunk was brought on board for its strong and sweet aroma of chocolate. The hope was to enhance the chocolate taste in the cookie by adding more sweet and bitter flavors. Major terpenes: Myrcene, Linalool, Limonene Tagalongs Pairing Notes When searching for strains to combine with this cookie, we focused our attention on varieties with a combination of sweet, nutty and chocolate notes — like Trainwreck. The most prominent taste in Train Wreck is it’s nuttiness as well as a sweet, almost lemon flavor. We wanted to mellow out the peanut butter and turn the sweetness in the chocolate. Major terpenes: Limonene, Myrcene, Caryophyllene The sweet and nutty flavors in OG Kush are what stuck out in the selection process because the aim of pairing these aromas and tastes was to great a synergy of flavors. Think of it of the weaving of flavors to create more complex ones. Doubling up on the sweetness along take its potency to a deeper level. Major terpenes: Limonene, Caryophyllene, Myrcene do-si-dos Pairing Notes
