BOSTON, 2014: On February 4, 2014, 13-year old Kristopher Bryan Lewis got off the school bus at his usual stop on the corner of West Selden and Morton Street in Boston, Massachusetts. He should've been home just a few minutes later around 5:30 p.m. but Kristopher never returned. Kristopher's mother Nina Cancel-Rodgers reported him missing that night. At first, police dismissed Nina's concerns. The media turned her away. She and her family took matters into their own hands, making noise and bringing awareness to her young son's disappearance. But nearly 10 years later, Nina is still waiting for her baby boy to come home.Nina gives a heart wrenching account of what it's like to have a child go missing and the lasting impact it's had on her life and the lives of her other children. She shares Kristopher's story hoping that people will start saying his name again, that they'll know Kristopher's face, and her greatest hope is that one day she'll know where he is.If you have any information about the 2013 disappearance of Kristopher Bryan Lewis, please contact the Boston Police Department at 617-343-4687. This episode of the She Turned Entrepreneur Podcast features a product so irresistible that Shark Tank ate it up. Sharon Mettra, franchise development at Press Waffle, shares the story of how this family-owned business, founded in 2016, evolved from a food truck to a rapidly expanding national franchise. It all starts with the waffle – a Belgian waffle, unlike anything you've tasted at Denny's or IHOP. Today they are a draw at food halls featuring artisanal offerings (and a rapidly expanding menu) in former big-box spaces and other bricks-and-mortar spaces. The franchise model, overseen by millennial founder Bryan Lewis, takes a fresh approach in terms of collaboration and accommodation to variables such as location and hours. Having returned to fully family-owned status, the company supports new franchisees with a two-part training module featuring a week of coaching at headquarters in Dallas followed by a week of onsite support from seasoned veterans who know how to roll out the business, whether owner-operated or run by a trusted team. The all-in cost ranges between $250,000-$300,000, generally inclusive of the $35,000 franchise fee. Sharon has been in the franchise space for some time and has enjoyed seeing this new enterprise take off. With locations already based throughout the Midwest, Press Waffle is expanding rapidly. Here are key takeaways from the conversation:· Press Waffle is 100% under family ownership and operation.· The Belgian waffle is unique in the U.S. market (although Sharon has seen competitors start to pop up).· Most of the profit thus far has come from the “indulgent” food category but standard meals are being integrated into the menu.· Training includes two modules: One at the home office in Dallas and a follow-up onsite.· The toughest part of the process is learning how to properly cook the Belgian waffle.· Currently the majority of Press Waffle outlets are located in the Midwest region.· The franchise's founder, a millennial, likes to “color outside the lines” and is excited to establish a fluid new iteration of the franchise model. Here's a quick look into the episode:· Sharon shares the sweet tale of Press Waffle's success, starting as a food truck that grew into a franchise entity located mostly at food halls, which are usually former big-box spaces transformed into a mix of artisanal restaurants and boutique food experiences.· Most recently Press Waffle has expanded into bricks-and-mortar standalones, which has allowed for an expansion of offerings, including alcohol at some locations.· Although Shark Tank's Barbara Corcoran made an initial $300k investment, Press Waffle is today fully under the family's control.· Press Waffle's onboarding/training process consists of:1. A seven-day onsite visit in Dallas, including up to three team members.2. For those owners who prefer to stay in the background, the franchise trains managers/surrogates.3. Following training, Press Waffle staff come onsite to help franchisees with setup and troubleshooting.4. Support is ongoing throughout the franchise's lifecycle.· Sharon says learning to produce Belgian waffles to standard is the toughest part.· Typically the franchise runs with about 10 full-time staff.· What makes for an ideal Press Waffle franchisee: 1. Individuals who would like to build a long-term partnership and relationship.2. People with a passion for the brand and growing it.· The start-up investment: The franchise fee is $35,000. Overall buildout is generally $250,000-$300,000, depending on square footage. · Some of Press Waffle's unique franchise attributes:1. Royalties are based on a daily sales scale, starting at 2%.2. As an investment in giving back, vendors are locally sourced wherever possible.3. There is proprietary flexibility in setting hours of operation based on culture, location and other factors.
Back in 1995 Johnson City Tennessee artist Bryan Lewis Saunders began creating a self portrait of himself every day. As an artist, he also set out to look for experiences that would affect his perception of self and the world around him. To achieve these ends, he came up with an experiment titled Under The Influence. Everyday during the duration of the experiment, Bryan took a different drug or intoxicant and drew himself under the influence. In addition to his visual art practice, he also performs spoken word and he was the subject of a documentary called Art of Darkness about the his drug experiment, which, he says, left him lethargic and with mild brain damage that wasn't irreparable.

Welcome to the 16th episode of Anechoic Chamber, featuring Johnson City, TN-based artist Bryan Lewis Saunders. Working in a wide array of disciplines from drawing to sound recording, Saunders is in many ways the quintessential American folk artist: having himself identified risk-taking as one of the key identifying features of American creativity, his own forays into this field have coupled the boundary-testing ethos of 1970s American performance artists with an intensely dedicated level of documentation that itself combines scientific rigor and journalistic honesty. For decades now, Saunders has maintained his vow to draw daily self-portraits that reveal fluctuations in his psychic makeup, and has done this in tandem with projects in which he imposes severe restraints upon himself: living for a month deprived of sight. Drawing while under the influence of a new drug for two straight weeks. Subjecting himself to extreme temperatures for extensive periods, and choosing to document the effects of completely monochromatic living environments during quarantine. In addition to this, Saunders' experiments with sleep-talking and his unique form of confessional performance known as “stand-up tragedy” hint at an individual for whom no obscure corner of human experiential terrain is to be left un-explored or un-mapped. credits: Remixed excerpts of Bryan Lewis Saunders' "Deaf Month", "Blind Month", and "Temperature Month" Vinyls by Thomas Bey William Bailey. Bryan Lewis is the Founder of Adminja, a client management platform specifically designed for Virtual Assistants. Everything a VA might need to keep track of client projects, billing, individual tasks, and more is provided in Adminja. Bryan shares a little bit about his software and how it helps VAs as well as shares his predictions for a more virtual future in this week’s episode! Key takeaways: Bryan is matching Kathy’s tiara-wearing spirit by wearing a wizard hat. How has COVID-19 impacted Bryan this year? He’s going a bit stir crazy. Bryan shares his “dare to leap” story. He had $300 in his pocket when he decided to leave his hometown and move to where the “internet action was at” in the ’90s. Has Bryan ever been fired? Kathy and Bryan share their age discrimination stories they experienced as they have gotten older. How does Adminja work? Why does Kathy love Adminja so much? Kathy is not tech-savvy at all, but she loves working in Adminja because it’s so intuitive to understand and she can quickly get the reports she needs. It has such a low-tech learning curve! Bryan has a great special for the first 25 Dare to Leap podcast listeners! Virtual is here to stay. We will see an uptick in virtual teams when things go “back to normal.” As things become more automated, will the need for VAs slowly become obsolete? What’s next for Bryan? Bryan is not a fan of the term “gig worker.” He explains why. Virtual assistant is actually quite a hard keyword to do ads for. The same goes for the acronym VA. Are you a VA? Head on over to Adminja and check it out! Kathy loves Adminja because it helps you stand out from the rest. Imagine how much time/money gets lost by you not accurately tracking your tasks? Resources: Getadminja.com Coupon code: DaretoLeap202 Bryan on LinkedIn Quotes: “The world has now seen what virtual is like, and while we’re getting a little tired of it, when we go back to normal life, we’re going to be virtual a whole lot more than we did before.” “Virtual assistant is the most impossible keyword to do ads for on Google because what comes up is Siri or Cortana.” “It’s the admin work that drives you crazy, not the client work. If the admin work is automated? You feel more comfortable taking on more clients.”

I would like to ask why i can't find the podcast on spotify. will you come to spotify?" Bryan Lewis emailed: "I have been listening through your podcast episodes every day while I work. Best collection of irish music out there! But all of a sudden, Spotify no longer has your podcast!! When I click the "Listen on Spotify" buttons on your site and facebook page a spotify page comes up with [object] [object] and doesn't open spotify. Am I doing something wrong? has it been removed? I found you in Apple podcasts but there are no episodes after 10/2019. So worried I'm not going to get to listen to the last 6 months! Thanks!" I told Bryan about our free iPhone and Android app. "Ooooh! An App! Fantastic. Sorry about the spotify thing. ?? THANK YOU!!! Just finished downloading it. brilliant. I like having a dedicated app for you even better. Thanks for the great work and giving me a soundtrack for my life. ??" Craig Backus emailed: "Marc, I've been wondering about listening to and supporting my favorite artists.... I have a pretty wide taste in music, and I often buy albums (albeit from Apple) but the whole album.... Since I'm a prime member, I keep getting ads from Amazon Music that their app includes access to millions of songs for $10 a month! I'm sure artists see some benefit from it, but I don't know. For example, I saw that Lucinda Williams has a new album out. I've never actually bought any of her music, but have heard her many times on Tom Petty radio on SiriusXM. I went to her website to get a feel for how she sells music, and she's basically included links to every music streaming and download site. I thought that artists might make more from direct sales, but it doesn't seem like they are set up for that. Perhaps it's more cost-prohibitive to have someone process orders than to just wait for streaming royalties and to go out on tour? I don't know...... I'd be interested in knowing what you think....... PS I really loved the discovery of "Jiggy" last week. The combination of Celtic music with world beats is different and pretty cool. I bet it will be coming to a scifi show soon! Perhaps a new bar beyond the ring in the Expanse?"

How did the launch go? It was a pain in the ass. They launched a month late. Of all the brands he launched, Bryan says this was the hardest. He was never going to have ass it.Always be networking. That's how Bryan connected with Bree, his Chief Creative Officer, and part of the founding team. Why this role? Why her? Because Bryan isn't good at content creation, and you have to hire for areas that you're weak—that's foundational to build a 50MM+ brand. Why not launch with subscription right away? Customers want to see what they're purchasing, so they're giving customers some time to see, feel, and try the clothing before going live with it. He learned this from his previous company, FabCrate.Start with why you're making a garment. If you focus on that, it'll help you make good manufacturing decision. Another tip, share your vision with vendors early! That will get you better terms, and more leniency when it comes to minimum order quantities. What's Bryan's philosophy on funding? if you're in eCommerce, figure out how to cover your costs, then try and get net terms with vendors, and then try and get some funding. Don't raise too much money, only raise what you absolutely need. Having less money helps you make better decisions. When it comes to user experience, the buying process should mimic the feel you have when you engage on Instagram. After buying, people should get a phone call, and all unboxing material should be high-quality and made from sustainable material. The vision is large! Bryan wants The Sweat Club to be about everything sweaty—The amazon of fitness. Keep an eye out for more products and services from them, like yoga studios, supplement hydration, and more. If you think fitness, he wants to associate that with The Sweat Club.Wondering what DTC brand Bryan is excited about. Bryan Lewis Saunders (c. 1969) is in some ways easier to describe by saying what he isn't rather than what he is. He is anything but ordinary, boring, or predictable. In 1995 he began drawing and painting self-portraits, vowing to create at least one self-portrait every day until he dies. He has more than kept his word. By his estimation, at present he has actualized somewhere around 12,000 daily-self-portraits using his hands, feet, mouth, penis, and/or even his own asshole. These nakedly honest pictures, in which he filters the world through himself (rather than vice versa), are perhaps most striking or notable for their extreme variety of stylistic approaches, as well as their utilization of drastically different expressive mediums (it's sometimes difficult to believe that they were all created by the same person). The video artist David Larcher dubbed this work "The Endlessly Reconstructing Auto-Autopsy." In his ceaseless search for experiences that possess the ability to profoundly alter or affect his perception of self, Bryan began a series of self-portraits in 2001 entitled “Under the Influence”, in which he began experimenting with making self-portraits while under the influence of different drugs. The series eventually went viral and brought attention to his myriad of other projects and experiments as an endurance artist (often involving prolonged sensory deprivation), videographer, poet, raconteur, stream of unconsciousness writer, recording artist, exterior decorator (See: “Extreme Makeover ‘Fuck Mattress' Edition”), museum director (his Johnson City, Tennessee home doubles as the world's only Steven "Jesse" Bernstein museum), found photography collector, and stand-up tragedy performer (a type of cathartic/traumatic performance he created following a failed attempt to become a famous stand-up comedian in China). On this episode of THE EXILE HOUR we talk with Bryan about a wide range of topics including his time in prison, resisting the entrepreneurial goal and effort to market artistic meaning, how to develop echolocation, Louis Wain, the difference between shock and disgust, processing psychological trauma, irrational fears, and mental disorders through ritualized artistic practice, sociopathy, thought transference, being publicly shamed for a cultural misunderstanding by a mob in the streets of China, his encounters with Chinese secret police, remembering late Industrial music pioneer Z'EV, and what it's like to experience the process of “breathing sound.” NOTE: Bryan is currently raising funds to have copies of his “Interviews Vol. 1” book sent to currently incarcerated criminals through the Books for Prisoners program. He asked us to include the following link which describes more about the undertaking and how people can support it: https://www.facebook.com/donate/2535660146501033/

Original Description: Today on the show is performance artist, stand up tragedy performer, poet, painter, and… There isn’t really a word for a lot of what Bryan Lewis Saunders does. You may have heard of Bryan Lewis Saunders a few years back when the internet suddenly became aware of his mission to create at least one self portrait a day for the rest of his life. Or, more specifically, a strange overblown period in which he created 50-60 self-portraits under the influence of different drugs (for context, he clams to have completed over 10,000 portraits now). So, we don’t talk about that much. If you want to read a little more about that and where Saunders currently lives, I’d suggest the piece Jon Ronson wrote on him for the Guardian a few years back. Just ignore the sensationalist, misleading headline. We talk more about his collaborations with noise musicians, his sleep speak recordings, his work performing psychological tests on himself, and his recent exhibits in which he was tortured on stage. In fact, I don’t speak a whole lot at all–I mostly ask a question and then just laugh for 10 minutes as he goes off on intensely surreal tangents. And finally, I need to thank and acknowledge the contributions of frequent guest, Arvo Zylo. At the end of his interview he had offered to send me a list of other guest suggestions, the first of which ended up being Bryan Lewis Saunders. Because of Saunders’s frequent collaborations with noise musicians, often recording a spoken word piece and then sending it to musician to do what they will with, and because I’ve been listening to a lot of Over The Edge and experimental Australian radio, I decided to take another stab at soundtracking and doing small edits to the interview. The majority of the music is from a previously unused three hour piece of Arvo’s titled, BLOODBATH. Arvo had originally been commissioned to compose it for a gallery, but the gallery went bust before opening and the track was doomed to an obscured spot on little seen archive.org playlist alongside 3-10 minute long pieces. The other piece is an excerpt from the Pleasure Tunnel collaboration between Arvo and Bryan. You can hear more about that in the bonus episode we posted yesterday. You can also find where to buy one of the few remaining cassette copies here.

Most films about lesbians are shitty or actually about straight people and she promises that this will be neither. Artists sometimes speak of their work as spiritual expression. This week Dr. Shepherd and guest cohost Rev. Rachel Simpson interview multitalented artists Jenny Hahn and Bryan Lewis, who discuss factors that motivate them to create work of beauty and power. Jenny is a gifted painter whose works brighten the room with their ebullient colors and expressive, imaginative figures. Bryan has created stained glass windows and smaller works that capture a modern version of the light-paintings visible in European cathedrals. This is an opportunity to hear two masters of their craft describe their passion for creativity. Share the link with others. The world will be a better place if more people fall in love with great art.
