Put your helmet on and meet us on the field in The Bay, as we talk with Allie Dicken, Director of Brand & Influencer Marketing for the San Francisco 49ers. Allie tells us all about her role with the team, as well as involvement with their stadium shows at Levi's Stadium. We dive into influencer marketing, including strategies, tracking methods, what stats and skills to look for, and the best approach to handling them. As an early adopter of influencer strategies, the 49ers are helping to lead the way within the NFL, often speaking on league meetings and spearheading new projects. We discuss branding for the team and their “Faithful to The Bay” campaign. Allie explains how she helps guide merchandising decisions, uniform designs, and the team's expansion into the international market in Mexico and the UK. Although working in the NFL now, we hear about her start in the industry from an internship at the Rose Quarter in Portland and how it led to a dream job with the Phoenix Suns – including what the biggest differences are between marketing NBA and NFL teams. Put on your George Kittle jersey and enjoy this fun, extremely informative episode, which is chock full of sports fandom, take-away tips and career advice, and a unique look inside NFL team marketing.Allie Dicken: Twitter | LinkedInSan Francisco 49ers: Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

"The Last Black Ma In San Francisco" is a film about a friendship, a family, a house, a city, and its community. San Francisco serves as a stand-in for cities across the country undergoing gentrification. The film — which won two prizes at the Sundance Film Festival — captures the deep sense of loss that overcomes families who are pushed from their homes and stripped of their communal experience. It's another installment in the recent wave of films out of the Bay Area, made by people of color — about people of color.Host Mark Olsen (@IndieFocus) talks with colleagues @GerrickKennedy, @JustinCChang and @JenYamato. Later on, Olsen talks about LATE NIGHT with critic @KennethTuran and film editor @geoffberkshire. What's the future for this kind of smart, charming mid-level gem in a streaming world? Will they continue to fill up theaters?
Something a little different this time out — a live epi of Succotash Chats, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, presented as part of the 16th Annual San Francisco Sketchfest! (l-r) Cole Stratton, Paco Romane, Will Durst, Marc Hershon, Wayne Federman, and Joe Paulino (For those who may be offended by my use of Frisco in the title this week - often an affront to some from the City By The Bay - please bear in mind this was a time-honored handle for San Francisco until Chronicle columnist Herb Caen decided to make it a "thing", including writing a book entitled, Don't Call It Frisco! But screw him. He was from Sacramento originally anyway. I grew up in and around this city and I'll call it whatever I want…) We had a delightful show on a Sunday afternoon at the Piano Fight nightclub in the Tenderloin district with a slim crowd in attendance. (I like to blame the low turnout on the thunderstorm that was going on.) Our beloved booth announcer Bill Heywatt was there, live and in person, and went beyond simply introducing the show and reading a commercial for Henderson's Pants Hippie Hiphuggers — he sang a song, The President's A Trump, based on The Lady Is A Tramp. And he was accompanied on piano by guest Wayne Federman, co-host of the Human Conversation soundcast. Special thanks to Wayne, who was performing the previous night and was due to fly home early Sunday, but stayed over until evening and paid the extra money to switch his flight just to join us. In addition to Bill and Wayne, we had political comedian and social commentator Will Durst who read a live Burst O' Durst segment and also helped me host the event. And on our panel of soundcasters we also had Paco Romane, co-host of the Sup Doc show, and Cole Stratton, co-host of Pop My Culture (and also co-producer of the SF Sketchfest.) Interestingly, both Wayne and Cole's soundcasts have dropped their last episodes. (Pop My Culture actually put up its last show the week before as part of the Sketchfest offerings.) THE PERFORMERS Will Durst is a five-time Emmy nominated political satirist, seven-time nominee for Best Male Stand-Up of the Year, a nationally syndicated columnist, author of four books, and has released five CDs and is sworn enemy to all tyrants foreign and domestic. He is now touring with his new acclaimed one-man show about Baby Boomers. BoomeRaging: From LSD to OMG, and can be seen as one of the three subjects in the new documentary 3 Still Standing, currently available from Amazon Prime. Wayne Federman is a comedian, actor, and writer. He has been touring clubs, colleges, alternative rooms, and theaters for over 30 years. He has performed on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and has his own stand‐up special on Comedy Central. Wayne has appeared in over twenty films including Knocked Up, Step Brothers, The 40‐Year‐Old Virgin, Legally Blonde, 50 First Dates, Funny People, and is featured in the upcoming Will Ferrell/Amy Poehler comedy The House. Television viewers know Wayne from his his recurring role on Curb Your Enthusiasm as well Shameless, Hello Ladies, Documentary Now!, The Larry Sanders Show, Community, and New Girl. He is both an Emmy and WGA-award nominated writer. He has had articles published in The Atlantic, Vulture, and Splitsider and was the head monologue writer for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon as well as co‐authoring a bestselling sports biography on Pistol Pete Maravich. His critically acclaimed 3-volume comedy retrospective, The Chronicles of Federman, was released in 2015 by ASpecialThing Records. Paco Romane’s authentic, engaging, and unpredictable style has established him as an audience favorite. His act is a “mashup of all things funny – stand up, sketch, improv, you name it” – and with his experience in improv and sketch comedy he’ll regularly spin any live moment with the crowd into his act. Paco has appeared on Comedy Central, is a frequent guest on The Todd Glass Show and was twice voted Best Comedian in San Francisco. He has also appeared in numerous films and national commercials, and is a sought after voice-over actor. Check out his comedy album Shaped Like A Thumb and his podcast Sup Doc. Cole Stratton wears a lot of hats. Not literal ones, as he has a tiny head and it just doesn't look right. He is the co-founder of SF Sketchfest. He’s also co-host of the popular (and recently shuttered) Pop My Culture soundcast. He has also guested on other soundcasts, such as Sklarbro County, Jordan Jesse Go!, Competitive Erotic Fan Fiction, Totally Laime, The Long Shot Podcast and James Bonding. Due to planet alignment, he has appeared on TV’s Nash Bridges, re-enacted on America’s Most Wanted, played with puppies and Betty White on the Animal Planet original The Retrievers, thrown-down like the sarcastic white boy he is on Wilmer Valderrama’s Yo Momma, and was a cast member on NBC’s competitive comedy show Comedy Colosseum. He’s a lead in the indie comedy Callback opposite Kevin Farley, has also appeared in the films Around the Fire, Dead Man on Campus, and the festival hit horror/comedy The Selling, where he plays obnoxious office gossip Ed, a role which he will be reprising in the upcoming end-times comedy Diani & Devine Meet The Apocalypse. HOW CAN YOU HELP? Great question! To help us to keep the mics on, you can do one (or all) of several things to offset our production costs. 1) Visit http://SuccotashShow.com and click on the cheery Donate button in the upper right side of the page, OR 2) Visit http://SuccotashShow.com and click on the Amazon banner at the top of the page - we get a little taste of everything you buy from the World's Greatest Anything Store, OR 3) Purch some merch from our Succotashery which, oddly enough, is available at http://SuccotashShow.com! Thanks so much for reading this, listening to the soundcast, and passing the Succotash! — Marc Hershon
LIVE from the home of Zynga, it's The F Plus Podcast! When Lemon and Boots visited The City By The Bay, they felt it was perfectly appropriate to sample the culinary traditions of such a vibrant and exciting city. Then, after eating some really good tacos, they made some raw food garbage based on recipes they found on the internet. Have you ever wanted to know what raw vegetable makes a perfect substitute for linguine? Or how changing the color of your salt can improve your chakra? Of course not, because you're not an idiot. This week, The F Plus plays the crunch twice for good measure.
WARNING: This is NOT a "regular" episode of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast. No clips. No interviews. No TweetSack. Call it an experiment. I was driving back to San Francisco after a weekend in Los Angeles. While in the southland I visited with a number of podcasters, comedians and past guests of Succotash: Rick Overton, Matt Weinhold, Ethan Dettenmaier, Shawn Marek, Travis Clark, Brandi Clark, Jon Manfrellotti, and Chris Gore. My conversations with all those folks invariably came around to podcasting. Why do we do it? Where is it going? And what does it all mean? Collectively, we batted those concepts and more around in our little discussion groups but - once I was alone, trapped in my car (Studio F) for the six hour Kessel Run back to The City By The Bay, the questions continued to bounce around in my head. So I fished out my trusty iPhone 5, my iRig Cast mic, and rambled into it for about 26 minutes. I ruminated on my show, other shows, and the podcasting industry as a whole. I wondered aloud about our listenship, the respect that podcasters may or may not be due, and all of the entertainment that's regularly provided for free by an ever-widening pool of podcasters around the world. Don't worry — it's not a signal that we're changing direction at Succotash. We've got another clip-filled extravaganza coming right around the corner with Episode 52. But one beautiful thing about this artform (if I may be afforded the chance to refer to it as such), is that a person can do anything they want from this side of the microphone. On the flip side, listeners don't have to listen to it. So this is, as I said in the beginning, an experiment. If you like it, let me know. If you hate it, let me know. Email, Facebook, Twitter, the Succotash Hotline (818.921.7212) — there's plenty of ways for you to get your thoughts and feedback to me. And I'll be back with our usual bag o' podcast clips in our very next episode! So don't be afraid to pass the Succotash. — Marc Hershon
Gary, Pat and Matt go on the road to the "City By The Bay" to have a Kihnversation with recording artist and MTV breakout star Greg Kihn.
Ringing in with Episode 35, Succotash is beginning to feel like a show (to me, anyway), even if our format keeps sliding around a bit. Maybe that's the nature of this beast. This epi is a real hybrid - half clips, half interview - and it's also the "lots of background noise" episode. I put it together while vacationing in Honolulu and my tracks as festooned with the lapping surf of the Pacific Ocean right outside the window. Coupled with the coffee house environment that special guest Sammy Wegent and I have going on in the background of our interview, I have no right to take anyone down for audio roughage in their clips - this episode, anyway. Sammy is the brains behind Everybody's A Comedian, the web series that is currently "airing" its sixth and final episode on YouTube this week. He's a fascinating guy who I first met when we were brought together a few years ago to put together an improv training program at the San Francisco Comedy College. Actor, stand-up, improvisor, writer...Sammy is a multi-threat talent and he pulled everything together to create the first season of EAC. The series is roughly based on his own life in San Francisco as a struggling stand-up comedian. Featuring Samy in the lead role, the episodes also show off a number of comedy faces familiar to San Francisco audiences - Kevin Avery, Bob Brindley, Joe Tobin, Allison Page, Yuri Baranovsky, Sal Calanni...and yours truly. (Check out Episode 2...) In our interview, Sammy gets into the background that led him down the paths of acting and comedy, as well as how he found his way to San Francisco. Once he hit the City By The Bay, the seeds for EAC began planting themselves and he talk about how they coalesced into the semi-fictional series that concludes this week. As far as this episode's clips go, here's the rundown: Here's The ThingAlec Baldwin kicked off his own podcast last year and, as you might imagine, he can probably pretty much have whomever he wants as a guest. I’m actually reviewing this episode, in which Alec talks to SNL and Portlandia’s Fred Armisen, on This Week In Comedy Podcasts over on Splitsider.com this week, so be sure to check that out. In our clip, Armisen talks about the transition point he went through from drummer to comedian. Get Into CharacterBlasting out of Grand Rapids and hosted by Tommy and Chubby, I don’t know too much more about these guys, but they’re 22 episodes in and taking this podcast thing seriously. And if Angus Doodle, from the Royal & Doodle podcast likes ‘em, that’s good enough for me! Soda Pop TalkSoda Pop Talk with Dan and Nolan just started popping up on my radar the past few months when I started seeing their tweets. They sent in the clip and this blurb about their show: We are just two normal guys with much to say about nothing...and anything. Sometimes we go over the line only to realize that there's still further to go. Soda Pop Talk is a show that is about variety - not just soda pop. Able to span current topics to drunken antics of family to UFOs to fecal matter to meaning of life philosophical debates...okay, not so much the latter, but you get the idea. The Half ScoopHere's a "new to me" podcast, this time from Down Under, joining Australian podcasts The DHead Factor and The Rigid Fist as those being featuring on Succotash. Featuring co-hosts Bryce McKeon, Corben Mitchell, and Stephen Denham, each week they sit down and talk about anything and everything including time travel, films and Batman. Way Too Hip LyonHart and Labrat go live every Monday from 7 to 9 PM, East Coast time, then you can catch WTH as a podcast the rest of the week. We haven't checked in with them for a while, so the clip they sent us is a glimpse in a recent screwed-up evening in the life of the hapless Labrat. Burst O' DurstWe sign off as per usual with comedian Will Durst reporting in, this episode in the aftermath of the Democratic National Convention. Don't forget to follow Will on Twitter @WillDurst! Last item this week: I wanted to mention a fond and regretful adieu to The Gee & Jay Show as well as The Pissed Off Man Show, both out Belfast, Ireland, and both mostly out of the mind of Gavin Maxwell. He and Jay have been plugging along in the largely thankless podcast world for a couple of years and they've had enough.. Their shows were breaths of fresh Irish air in a world of soundalike "shootin' the shit" style shows but, for now, they've shut down operations. Gavin sounds off on his blog about the reasons why he's tossing in the towel, so click on the link and give it a read. (Good luck, boys! Come on back anytime!) UPDATE: Happened to be up late tonight and saw Gavin's tweet that there was an additional Pissed Off Man show that suddenly posted on SoundCloud...it seems if he can find the will (aka money), he'll find a way to keep going. Check it out. There's Epi35 in a nutshell for you. If you'd like to write me, that's at Marc@SuccotashShow.com and, if you're a comedy podcaster and want to submit a clip, we like 3 to 5 minute ones in MP3 format, which can be sent along to clips@SuccotashShow.com. Until next time, please pass the Succotash! — Marc Hershon
Joe Klocek No clips this episode. Just warning you up front. Normally we bring you a barrage of comedy podcast clips from around the Net of Inter (hence our subtitle, the Comedy Podcast Podcast.) This episode there's mostly just room enough for my interview with our special guest Joe Klocek. NEXT epi, however, there will be a barrelful of clippage and no interview. You'll like Joe. He's a funny, engaging standup comedian, solidly based in the San Francisco comedy scene — "a big fish in a small pond" as he puts it. Was not moving to Los Angeles or New York earlier in his career a misstep? Could be — we get to that and a whole lot more in our chat that took place this past week in the green room at San Francisco's historic Punchline Comedy Club. (A visit that really took me back, as I was hanging (and helping) out at the Punchline when it first opened more than 30 (!) years ago.) If you're within hailing distance of The City By The Bay, do yourself a favor and check out Joe's monthly show Previously Secret Information (or PSI.) He, along with Bruce Pachtman and Ty Mckenzie, have been producing this kickass monthly storytelling show. Often featuring comedians, PSI also has actors, writers and other show folk telling tales that, while often humorous in part, stray frequently into other emotional landscapes that make for the best stories. Coming up in June you can not only catch Joe in the show, but also Jamie De Wolf, C.W. Nevius, Erika Lutz, and Jack Boulwere. Shows happen at Stage Werx Theater, 446 Valencia St. in the Mission District. Although there aren't any podcast clips per se in this epi, you will hear I Want To Win, a cut off Karen Kilgariff's album, Behind You. Funny lady, funny songs — for just $3 bucks, you can download it from BandCamp.com. And, of course, we have our Burst O' Durst with a slightly belated Memorial Day message from comedy's Ambassador to the Middle, Will Durst. Before I forget, big thanks to those Succotash listeners who contributed to friend-of-the-show Dean Haglund's Kickstarter campaign. The X-Files/Lone Gunmen alum reached his goal for the funds needed to publish his planned Shock n' Awesome graphic novel! Since we don't have any podcast clips this time around, it seems like a good opportunity to remind any comedy podcasters that you're always welcome to submit a 3-5 minute MP3 clip from your show to me by sending it to marc@SuccotashShow.com. That's about it. Shorter bit of blather from me than usual. More time for you to enjoy my chat with Joe Klocek! When you get done, kindly pass the Succotash! — Marc Hershon
It's January, which is S.F. Sketchfest time in San Francisco. Now in it's 11th year, Sketchfest has bcome a Big Deal in the national sketch scene, taking place in multiple venues across the city with over a hundred shows. And with some very big names gracing the stage — this year bigger than ever —the festival has gained massive attention. That was one great reason to have Cole Stratton as our guest, as he is the co-founder and co-organizer of the event. If you've never had a chance to check out S.F. Sketchfest and you're within driving distance of The City By The Bay, you should definitely try to get in to see at least one of the shows (if you can still get tickets - many of the bigger name shows sell out quick!) For the full lineup, hop over to http://SFSketchFest.com. The other great reason to have Cole on is that he's also the co-founder and co-host of Pop My Culture, a very popular podcast that's about ten years younger than Sketchfest. It made a bunch of Top 10 Podcast lists last year and just fell in as one of fleet of p'casts under the Nerdist banner. Cole and his co-host, Vanessa Ragland, make for an engaging team and have had an impressive lineup of comic and celebrity guests on their show. It's always a little more fun for me to have a fellow podcaster on a Succotash 'sode (the last time was Epi8 with Rob Celli from What Duvet Said), because they're invited to chime in on the various clips that we feature. Normally we don't play as many clips when we interview a guest but, this being one of our out-of-Studio-P interviews means that the guiding hand of engineer/producer Joe Paulino wasn't there to keep me more professional. so we have ten clips, a Burst O' Durst, a classic Henderson's Pants commercial...and the episode runs 17 minutes over our usual one hour time. We also have a Skypversation with Kelly Carlin, spoken word performer and friend-of-the-show, who is performing her show A Carlin Home Companion at S.F. Sketchfest on Friday, January 27th. Succotash News: We have merchandise! What's a podcast, after all, without something to try to sell you? Now we have it! There's not much in the "Succotashery" so far — several styles of t-shirts, coffee mugs hats and some other stuff, all sporting the spiffy new Succotash logo. We'll bring more stuff online in the coming months but, for now, click on this link (or over on the ad on the side) and check out the swag! Succotash Reminder: Yours truly is a contributing reviewer for This Week In Comedy Podcasting, Jesse Fox's delightful column at Splitsider.com. There's a fresh rack of the funniest and hottest comedy p'casts reviewed every week. For a full lineup of who Cole and I talk about on this show, it's right here! (As always, just click on a show's title to be taken to their website. All the shows are available through iTunes. And some of them (including Succotash) can be found on your smartphone or tablet's Stitcher Smart Radio app.) Pop My CultureAs is our custom whenever we have a fellow podcaster along, their show gets to ride shotgun. Cole Stratton and Vanessa Ragland's hot p'cast features guest comics, actors and celebrities chewing the fat about the latest trends, movies, music and media. The guest this clip is Jim Rash, familiar to fans of NBC TV's Community as Dean Pelton, and also co-writer of the hit movie The Descendants. The BugleThis fun news-based comedy show straddles the Atlantic with one host, John Oliver, based in New York and the other host, Andy Zaltzman, holding down the fort in England (where the show originates from.) Epi178 is a historic episode of sorts as it is the last one produced under the banner of the London TimesOnline. From here on out the lads are on their own (but if you already subscribe to The Bugle on iTunes, you should receive the new episodes without interruption.) Never Not FunnyFast n' furious Jimmy Pardo is the host of this long-running comedy podcasts - one of the firsts to get out there, actually. He's also got a pay-to-play model going for the "Pardcast", so you'll have to visit his site to get the whole magilla. You can sample every episode through a free 20 minute hunk that's up on iTunes, though. Jordan, Jesse, Go!Jesse Thorn and Jordan Morris host fast-paced conversational show. Our guest, Cole Stratton, has worked with them a lot over the years and says they're as fun in person as they sound on their podcast. In this clip they're joined by "the Bitter Buddha", comedian Eddie Pepitone. The Long Shot PodcastPepitone again? Yep, only here he's on his home turf, where he is a regular along with Sean Conroy, Jamie Flam and Amber Kenny. This quartet often has a guest but, even when they done, they hold court and laugh it up about current events, disturbing dreams and pretty much anything their wide-ranging conversations turn up. The Thrilling Adventure HourOur guest, Cole, has lots of good things to say about this imaginative show, which is a monthly comedy staple in Los Angeles as a live stage show. Done in the motif of an old-time scripted radio, the cast and their slate of impressive guests consistently deliver a great listen. And since it's meant to be a radio offering, it's translation from stage to podcast is dead on. You Made It WeirdComic Pete Holmes and his show is now part of the Nerdist network of podcastery. Patterned in the spirit of Marc Maron's WTF show, Holmes has a knack for making his guests (often fellow comedians) feel a little uncomfortable at some point in the show but seems to usually all end in laughter. Here he talks with the very funny Nick Kroll. (Side note brought up by our guest this week: Holmes is the voice of the E-Trade baby on the TV commercials!) Pod F. TompkastWe've featured this very creative show before and with good reason - host Paul F. Tompkins is one of the funniest, fastest and inventive comedians around. The scripted longform material performed on the Tompkast is difficult to do justice to in the time we have, so do yourself a favor and grab a full show soon. This My ShowPodcaster Jeremy Wein is a tribute to the idea that if you want to do a podcast, just go ahead and do it. He's not a comedian himself but he's managed to crack the code to get a lot of funny people to sit still with him long enough to do a decent interview. Here's he's caught up with NBC-TV's Parks & Recreation's Aziz Ansari. (Apologies to Jeremy - in the episode, I give out his site as ThisMyShow.com...it's actually ThisMyShow.NET) Big Pop FunAnother Nerdist family podcast? Yeah, I'm not sure why they're so prevalent on Succotash this episode — I swear there's no payola involved (but a fellow can dream, can't he?) — but they do have a quality lineup over there. This one is a young p'cast, hosted by veteran comedian Tom Wilson, most famous for his role as Biff (and Buford) Tannen in the Back To The Future movies. He's also a good interviewer as you can hear in his 3-part chat with comedian/writer/director Steve Oedekerk. We close out the show with our Burst O' Durst feature, faithfully supplied to us by the politically bent comedy stylings of Will Durst. That's it for this batch. Write me sometime at marc@SuccotashShow.com and let me know what's on your mind. You can also call into the Succotash Hotline at (818) 921-7212 and sound off about something you've heard or something you want to hear. Thanks for listening! (You are listening, aren't you?) Don't forget to pass the Succotash! — Marc Hershon
