Meet Captain Content & Kevin in the pit again this week for a tooth-losing, hella good time! We're getting our aggressions out by revisiting the starting point of it all for Kevin. The thrash, crossover, speed metal movement of the 80s spawned his love of all things rock n' punk n' metal. Once again, we will not be covering the Big 4 of Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax, but if you love them, then you will love this bunch. What is it that we do here at InObscuria? We exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In this episode, we explore all things mosh-worthy! This is real meta,l people. All hail the speed and ferocity of Thrash! Our hope is that we turn you on to something new.Songs this week include:Exodus – “And Then There Were None”from Bonded By Blood(1985)Dead On – “The Widower” from Dead On (1989) Belladonna – “Blunt Man” from Belladonna (1995)Coroner – “Read My Scars” from No More Color (1989)Reverend – “Butcher Of Baghdad” from Play God (1991)Grip Inc. – “Guilty Of Innocence” from Power Of Inner Stregth (1995)Havok – “Fear Campaign” from V (2020)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uIf you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/

It all started with a cherry-red glint in the corner of my eye, a beacon of freedom on two wheels. At 14, in the heart of El Paso's Upper Valley, I stumbled upon a treasure - a red Allstate scooter, tagged at $125.00, whispering tales of the open road. For days, I gazed longingly, until courage took the wheel. The owner, a college-bound chap, agreed to a secret deal. My piggy bank bled $90.00, but dreams are worth every penny. And soon, with $125 in hand, the scooter and I were one. We zipped through backstreets, fueled by youthful rebellion. My first taste of independence? A daring dash for gas, venturing beyond the familiar lanes. For two glorious years, that scooter was my wings, my covert companion in crime. That little red ride revved up a lifelong love affair with all things fast and furious. From 65 cars to a fleet of motorcycles, I've had a mid-life crisis ever since. And now, Capt'n Dave is here to fuel your Friday with a rock ‘n' roll odyssey! We're kickstarting the journey with Pearl Jam's electric anthems, cruising through ‘The Kid with the Butterfly Net', and Cake's defiant ‘I Will Survive'. Jerry Butler's soulful serenade joins the mix, while Jesse Malin and Lucinda Williams bring ‘Dead On' to life. Don't miss our ‘California Dreaming' cover in the Deuces are Wilder segment. So buckle up, tune in, and let The Internet Radio Man take you on a wilder ride than ever before. A special shout-out to the Inside Self Storage crew - Vegas awaits your grand showcase next week! For nineteenth- century New Englanders, 'vampires' lurked behind tuberculosis. To try and rid their houses and communities from the scourge of the wasting disease, families sometimes relied on folk practices, including exhuming and consuming the bodies of the deceased. Author and folklorist Michael Bell has spent decades pursuing stories of the vampire in New England. My Special Guest is Michael Bell Michael E. Bell has a Ph.D. in Folklore from Indiana University, Bloomington; his dissertation topic was African American voodoo beliefs and practices. He has an M.A. in Folklore and Mythology from the University of California at Los Angeles, and a B.A. , with M.A. level course work completed, in Anthropology/Archaeology from the University of Arizona, Tucson. Bell was the Consulting Folklorist at the Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission, Providence, Rhode Island, for more than twenty-five years. He has also taught courses in folklore, English, anthropology and American studies at several colleges and universities. His book, Food for the Dead: On the Trail of New England's Vampires, was a BookSense 76 Pick and winner of the Lord Ruthven Assembly Award for Best Nonfiction Book on Vampires. He has completed the manuscript for a second book on American vampires, titled The Vampire's Grasp: The Hidden History of Consumption in New England. The Savagery of Consumption and it's link with the Vampire Though scholars today still struggle to explain the vampire panics, a key detail unites them: public hysteria almost invariably occurred in the midst of savage tuberculosis outbreaks. Typically, a rural family contracted the wasting illness, and- even though they often received the standard medical diagnosis and treatment- the survivors blamed early victims as vampires, responsible for preying upon family members who subsequently fell ill. Often an exhumation was called for, to stop the vampire's predations. Vampire Exhumations The particulars of the vampire exhumations, vary widely, in many cases, only family and neighbours participated. But sometimes town fathers voted on the matter, or medical doctors and clergymen gave their blessings or even pitched in. Some communities in Maine and Plymouth, Massachusetts, opted to simply flip the exhumed vampire facedown in the grave and leave it at that. In Connecticut, Rhode Island and Vermont, though, they frequently burned the dead person's heart, sometimes inhaling the smoke as a cure. These rituals could be clandestine, lantern lit affairs or public knowledge with participants placing ads in the local newspaper for anyone to attend. In this episode, you will be able to: 1. Delve into the captivating stories of dying men, women and children who believed they were food for the dead. 2. Investigate questions surrounding the exhumation of a loved one. The impact on family and community and who these individuals and communities were. 3. Explore the ritual practices involved in dealing with the 'vampire' threat and how these could evolve and change. 4. Delve into first hand eye witness records, letters and diaries. 5. Examine testimony from interviews with descendants of Mercy Brown (Rhode Island, 1892) one of the best documented cases of the exhumation of a corpse in order to perform rituals to banish an undead manifestation. Vampires, finally! After years of recording a horror podcast, I've finally recorded a conversation about the first thing you all probably think of if I said “horror monster.” Actually, at this very moment, maybe you'd name a Floridian politician but you get my drift…I'm delighted to be joined by Jacqueline Holland, to talk about her new novel of bloodsucking and cursed immortality, The God of Endings. As with so many books featured on this show, it's an offbeat look at an old trope, with a vampire that has no problem with garlic and who is not at all horny! She's also a pre-school teacher in the 80s. That's REALLY hardcore!Jacqueline and I talk about horror imposter-syndrome, the history of New England vampires, monstrous mothers, the terror of living forever, and how she has always been…in her own words… a dark weirdo.Enjoy! The God of Endings was published by on February 7th by Flatiron BooksOther books mentioned in this episode include:What I Didn't See, and Other Stories (2002), by Karen Joy FowlerWe Are All Completely Beside Ourselves (2013), by Karen Joy FowlerFood for the Dead: On the Trail of New England's Vampires (2001), by Michael BellSomething Wicked This Way Comes (1962), by Ray BradburyThe Martian Chronicles (1950), by Ray BradburyThe Shining (1977), by Stephen KingJust Like Mother (2022), by Anne Heltzel – Episode 92The Upstairs House (2021), by Julia Fine – Episode 27 Support Talking Scared on PatreonCome talk books on Twitter @talkscaredpod, on Instagram, or email direct to talkingscaredpod@gmail.com Support the show

Today, we are going to talk about one of Scotland's most notorious serial killers, "The Muswell Hill Murderer and The Kindly Killer..." And if those nicknames weren't bad enough, buckle in, because this guy is one of the worst. Very depraved, evil and we can't trust him as far as we can throw him. I am privileged to have Elisha from Dead On: A True Crime Podcast with me, and she and I dissect this gross man's life to find out why he did what he did and to shed light on his victims who sadly got ignored and stereotyped in the media back in the 70s and 80s.  In part 1, we discuss his early life and background then discuss the first few murders and his first run-in with law enforcement. Part 2 is coming out tomorrow so make sure you check that out as well to finish discussing all the murders, his arrests, and the impact after he's off the streets. Ep 13_ The New England Vampire Cure with Michael E. Bell

Dr. Michael E. Bell (author of Food for the Dead: On the Trail Of New England's Vampires) was Rhode Island's official folklorist when he became a vampire hunter- well, it's when he first began to hunt down stories of vampires! His research came from tales passed down in families among the generations, from old newspaper articles, from personal letters and medical writings by doctors practicing in the 18th and 19th centuries. The vampire "cure" was a mysterious "therapeutic ritual" done by the common people and the practice has been found to have taken place throughout New England. The word vampire is a bit controversial, as no one ever involved in these cases referred to the dead as vampires. Dr. Bell's research took him back to a time when consumption was ravaging entire families. Consumption, now known as pulmonary tuberculosis, is a frightening, wasting disease. It could lay dormant for years, and then suddenly begin to dwindle down the life force. It was no respecter of age, class or social position. The cure often involved the exhumation of a corpse, because it was suspected that the deceased may be stealing the life force from family members still living, but suffering the effects of the consumption. Signs were looked for, such as fresh blood found int e vital organs. Sometimes the person's heart was removed and burned to ash, sometimes they were turned facedown in their coffin. In an age much like our own, people turned to unorthodox methods to try and save their loved ones. Dr. Michael E. Bell honors us with this conversation. In the 19th century, some New England communities grew so desperate to help victims of tuberculosis that they resorted to a macabre practice: digging up dead relatives and ritually burning their organs. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll examine the causes of this bizarre belief and review some unsettling examples. We'll also consider some fighting cyclists and puzzle over Freddie Mercury's stamp. Intro: Residents of Sydney and London could take a train to the local necropolis. Over a 23 year span these two filmmakers have created some of the most powerful stories put on film. This week we take a look at their first film 1976's ground-breaking masterpiece Taxi Driver and their final collaboration, 1999's criminally underseen Bringing Out the Dead. We realize that Taxi Driver has been discussed almost to death, however a film of it's power can always be looked at again. Bringing Out the Dead has never received the recognition or examination that it has deserved. We are proud to do our small part to fix this. Take a listen as we discuss the cultural and artistic importance (as well as legacies) of these two films.  Remember, Questions, Comments, Complaints, & Suggestions can be directed to gondoramos@yahoo.com. Kathryn Haggis is a Canadian actor and writer, living in Toronto ON. After graduating at The Neighbourhood Playhouse Theatre School in New York City, she returned to Toronto and joined The Second City auxiliary touring Company. While at SC in Toronto, Kathryn spent years teaching improv to children, youth and young adults of all abilities. She also enjoyed years of playing Francis, in Sonny Mills; live, episodic, Dyke City, for Buddies In Bad Times Theatre and she treasures being directed by Judith Thompson in Lois Fine’s, Freda and Gem's Best of the Week. Kathryn’s favourite film and TV credits include playing cousin Marianthi in My Big Fat Greek Wedding (1 and 2), and most recently: Imposters, on Netflix. Kathryn is currently collaborating on a short film, called Dead On.  We had a great discussion about her work with youth and what that brings to her role as a correctional officer, what she’s excited for in Edinburgh and what it’s like working with Judith Thompson – have a listen!
