Fred Armisen of Saturday Night Live & Portlandia shares his journey of falling in love with Los Angeles, despite not being 'a sun person.' Also, did you know Armisen is of Korean, Venezuelan, and German descent? Let's get into it!
La pintora de la felicidad, así se conoce a Eva Armisen. La zaragozana, que ahora está en Corea, nos presenta sus próximas exposiciones internacionales.
Fred Armisen grew up idolizing trailblazing musicians, from The Beatles to The Clash and The Talking Heads. But spending his twenties drumming in bands never seemed to land him further than moderate crowds and endless nights loading his gear into the van. In need of a change, he turned to comedy, honing the craft of creating characters we know and love him for, on shows like SNL and Portlandia. I connected with Fred while we were both on set in different locales to discuss his unusual pivot, why he still feels an intense yearning for the music he loves, and the strange intimacy of filming a fight scene. That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits
In this episode, Nick focuses on the great musical talent and knowledge of former "Saturday Night Live" cast member Fred Armisen. Before Armisen entered the world of comedy, and became a cast member on SNL, he was a musician in many bands, including the legendary Chicago punk band Trenchmouth. His connection to the world of punk rock snuck into this work on SNL a bunch of times, and in this episode, Nick concentrates on two amazing sketches satirizing that world of punk rock in hilarious fashion. He also looks at a terrific appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, in which Armisen brilliantly takes the audience on a tour of punk music from 1970 to the present day. You will hear hilarious work from cast members Bill Hader, Taran Killam and Bobby Moynihan, and guests like Ashton Kutcher, Dave Grohl and Steve Jones from The Sex Pistols. Terrific music, smart satire, and a history lesson are all combined in this trip through punk rock, as lead by the weird, smart, and hilarious Fred Armisen. [Ep65]
We sit down with writers producers, and the cast for a conversation about PV & Franny. ___ At a school where no one knows who's inside the football team's bulldog mascot costume, where a game of hide-and-seek has been going on for the better part of a week, where Dale Wilson, the world's nicest bully, desperately wishes kids would stop giving him their lunch money, two wayward fifteen-year-olds are about to start a band. PV & Franny is a stylized and occasionally surreal 30-minute single-cam comedy about young love, growing up weird, and making music. It follows PV, a confident, take-no-prisoners punk rocker in training, and Franny, a sensitive and taciturn singer-songwriter type, as they navigate falling in and out of love, artistic collaboration, and the perennial difficulty of tuning a B string. It's Sing Street meets The Other Two, with a healthy dose of cult classic The Adventures of Pete & Pete for good measure. Written by the talented Tommy Wallach, and narrated by Ty Burrell, Fred Armisen and other notable names, the two-part series tells the story of two young souls who cross paths in school. Franny is immediately impressed by PV's musical talents, but their connection takes an unexpected turn when PV seeks Franny's help to solve a personal dilemma. Tune in to discover the heartwarming dynamics of friendship, intimacy, and the complexities of young love. In addition to Burrell and Armisen, the star-studded cast includes Liam Richardson, Kensington Tallman, Rahm Braslaw, O'neill Monahan, Samantha Morelos, Eileen Fogarty, and Ruben Ray each adding their unique flair to the narrative. ____ Follow Table Read (@TableReadPodcastLA) on Instagram for more info! Can we all agree that the date of August 20, 2015 should be enshrined as one of the most important in the history of documentary? In case you've forgotten, that's the date that “Documentary Now!” burst on the scene with the airing of its first episode: “Sandy Passage”, an unforgettable debut starring Fred Armisen and Bill Hader parodying the Maysles' classic documentary “Grey Gardens”. Somehow, this crew of on and off-camera SNL talent (the show's co-creators are Armisen, Hader, Seth Meyers, and Rhys Thomas) managed to pull off the not-so-small miracle of parodying the high priests and priestesses of documentary in half-hour masterpieces and, just as miraculously, found a network to actually air the program (IFC, for the record). Fast forward seven years and “Documentary Now!” has just premiered its first episodes of season 4 (actually, season 53 in the bizarre-o world of “Doc Now!”). Seth, Rhys and Alex Buono (who directs with Rhys and is also the show's cinematographer) took time away from whatever else they were doing to join Mike and Ken on Top Docs and talk about the collective creative genius (our words, as they are far too modest) behind this unique show. Stay tuned for answers to such questions as: “Why did it take until season 4 (er, 53) to parody the highly imitable Werner Herzog and Les Blank's portrait of him, “Burden of Dreams”? How did the team find itself on a remote Welsh mountainside trying to build a sitcom set as howling winds threatened to blow the whole thing to smithereens? And what do you say to Cate Blanchett when she asks, “Is it OK if I wear giant Coke bottle glasses?” Join us as we peal back the layers on the show that dances on the line between the sublime and the ridiculous while never straying from its love of documentary. To paraphrase the show's host, the immortal Helen Mirren, “I give you ‘Documentary Now!'” Documentary Now! season 4 episodes discussed in this podcast include: “Soldier of Illusion” (written by John Mulaney) (parts 1 and 2), “Two Hairdressers in Bagglyport” (written by Seth Meyers), and “How They Threw Rocks” (written by Seth Meyers) Documentary Now! can be seen on IFC and streaming on AMC+. EpisodePull back the curtain on one of Salty's works and there's no telling what you will find -- a film, a party, an intimate discussion, a festival, a newspaper, a concert, a feast, and more often than, not an invitation to decide whether you want to participate as an audience member. or as part of the show. BIOSalty Xi Jie Ng co-creates semi-fictional paradigms for the real and imagined lives of humans within the poetics of the intimate vernacular. Often playing with relational possibilities, her interdisciplinary work is manifested from fantasy scores for the present and future that propose a collective re-imagining through humor, care, subversion, play, discomfort, a celebration of the eccentric, and a commitment to the deeply personal. Her practice dances across forms such as brief encounter, collaborative space, variety show, poem, conversation, meal, publication, film, performance. As a citizen scholar of the cosmos, Xi Jie explores aging, intimacy, food, lineage, identity, ritual and power, while questioning who artists are and what gets to be called art. Her research of everyday as performance bears fruit as tender presentations somewhere between art and life. Centering the body and its histories, she constructs portrayals of self and space that are ambiguous, raw, dream-like, absurd, mundane. At heart she is a cosmic clown, floating at the intersections of wonder and melancholy, existential meditation and devotional nonsense. Even if you don't know who Joe Wong is, you're almost certainly aware of his work. The Los Angeles-based composer and producer can be heard on television shows like Russian Doll, Ugly Delicious, Master of None and Superjail, as well as films like To All The Boys I've Loved Before and Seven Stages to Achieve Eternal Bliss. He also co-produced Fred Armisen's Netflix special, Standup For Drummers. Beyond his on-screen efforts, Wong also interviews some of the world's most accomplished percussionists on The Trap Set — an excellent drummer-focused podcast that has released more than 230 episodes. On top of all that work in a variety of mediums, Wong continues to write and record his own music. While back in his hometown of Milwaukee over Thanksgiving, Wong met up with My First Band host Tyler Maas to talk about his eclectic artistic résumé that spans the realms of television, film, podcasting and live performance. The conversation also made its way to Wong's interest in drumming during adolescence, his formative high school and college bands and his time living in a Riverwest house venue that would later be featured on an episode of Hoarders. Over the course of the hour-long discussion, Wong also talked about his foray into the interesting world of TV and film scoring. Kurt and Joey start off the show with a fun discussion of sex-education problems, Joey's reluctance to joke about boobs, and why are we so darn infatuated with them? About 15 minutes in, we get a little serious about the recent Michael Flynn issue, Trump's tweets and the cowardly passing of the tax bill. At the 30 minute mark, we shift back to fun with our weekly mystery celebrity birthday. Then (45:00 approx) we introduce our latest (and greatest?) segment, "Splooge from the Past!" (working on the title) where we dig into the archives of our lives and find GEMS!! Joey recites Kurt's 5th grade poetry, Kurt re-enacts Joey's facebook thread, and a post-break-up Hallmark card. You don't want to miss a second! Contest deadline extened to 12/25/17! To win yourself a call from Kurt and Joey and be part of a future episode, do this: 1. Annie and Dan hit the ground running and talk about a bunch of stuff, including Fred Armisen, improvised singing, the new website "Reddit", Dan's promotion, and some serious spoilers of The Dark Tower movie, which isn't even Disney. They briefly talk about the closing of The Great Movie Ride and Universe of Energy. The round out the last half of the episode by playing a rousing game of "Disney Would You Rather", and while it's not nearly as dirty as it sounds, its definitely just as fun.
You know Zoe Lister-Jones from CBS's "Life in Pieces" but did you know that she can write, produce, direct, play bass, and sing? Fred Armisen comes by to discuss the philosophy of Marshall McLuhan as well as his upbringing in Long Island and how he failed as a drummer. Conversation also covers Fred's rise to fame after getting hired for Saturday Night Live and Danny's struggles with trying to become successful. Fred gives Danny great tips on how to do impressions. This episode is sponsored by Stand Up! Records and Number 1 Auto Transport. Enjoy!
Fred Armisen may be one of the most versatile performers on TV now. You've seen his hilarious skits on SNL. He's Seth Meyers' 'Late Night' bandleader. And he's also starring opposite Carrie Brownstein in the quirky IFC comedy series, "Portlandia," as the two parody life in Portland, Oregon. Armisen talks to Peter Travers about his chemistry with Brownstein both on set and off. And he sets the record straight on those reports that the series will be coming to end next season. Please leave us a review! ----> http://bit.ly/2kIbsjV Check out our other podcasts: http://bit.ly/2eBJMNa * ABOUT PETER TRAVERS: Peter Travers an American film critic, author and journalist. For some 25 years, Travers has written for Rolling Stone. He personally screens nearly 400 movies per year and releases weekly reviews. Travers is the nation's most blurbed film critic, according to eFilmCritic.com. Travers is also host of ABC's "Popcorn With Peter Travers," where he interviews actors, directors and Broadway performers about their roles and their lives. In his eleven seasons on “Saturday Night Live,” Fred Armisen appeared in over 800 sketches, proving to be the most versatile oddball utility player the storied late night show could hope for. Since leaving the show in 2013, rather than setting his sights on film, as many of his fellow ex-SNL-ers have, Armisen has found a groove on TV. His Peabody winning show, “Portlandia” has just entered it’s 7th season on IFC. That channel is also home to his deliciously specific documentary spoof series, “Documentary Now”. And most nights you can find him leading the band on “Late Night with Seth Meyers”. All of these busy jobs come up on this week’s conversation on “Happy Sad Confused” but you may delight most in the tangents. From Armisen’s lamenting the end of the nerd era to his creepy plans for his own funeral (he plans to have his tombstone read “Buried Alive. 666”), it’s all uniquely Fred. Steive, Pappy, and Vints the Intern spoil Documentary Now! "Saturday Night Live" compatriots Fred Armisen, Bill Hader and Seth Meyers serve as creators, executive producers and writers of this IFC original series, using their love of documentary films and combining it with comedy to present a unique take on the form. Hosted by Dame Helen Mirren and starring Armisen and Hader, each episode is shot in a different documentary film style, paying tribute to some of the most important stories that didn't actually happen. "SNL" creator Lorne Michaels also executive produces "Documentary Now!", and guest stars include Jack Black and John Slattery.
Our pal Fred Armisen! Widely known as a cast member on Saturday Night Live from 2002 until 2013,[3] Armisen has portrayed characters in comedy films, including EuroTrip, Anchorman, and Cop Out. With his comedy partner Carrie Brownstein, Armisen is the co-creator and co-star of the IFC sketch comedy series Portlandia. Armisen founded ThunderAnt.com, a website that features the comedy sketches created with Brownstein, and is the bandleader for the Late Night with Seth Meyers house band, The 8G Band. Just in time for the 40th Anniversary of the premiere of SNL on October 11, 1975!
This week Dan and Chris discuss Fear The Walking Dead and the wave of recent spin offs, reboots and adaptations. But mostly, they get distracted and talk about unrelated nonsense. Catch us on twitter @nothinbutstatic or email us on mail@nothingbutstatic.co.uk

Appendix F: From the vaults! H.G. Wells (Paul F. Tompkins) welcomes Ernest Hemingway (Josh Fadem) and Sun Tzu (Fred Armisen) to the Dead Authors stage for an evening of whatever this is. Portlandia's co-creator-writer-stars Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein join Ophira Eisenberg at New York's 92nd Street Y for a conversation about their creative process and the unique careers that brought them together on this hilarious and award-winning show. This was recorded on February 25, 2014.
Fred Armisen’s career has followed an unpredictable trajectory. Armisen spent nearly a decade drumming with Trenchmouth, a punk rock band remembered for its spirited cacophony. When he got tired of carrying his own equipment, Armisen picked up a video camera and began creating improvised characters. Fred relates stories from his years in the Los Angeles comedy club scene, drumming for the Blue Man Group, and working on SNL, where he met his idol, Steve Martin. And it’s true: Armisen really does love Portland. Paula Pell was having the time of her life singing and dancing at a Florida theme park when she got a phone call from SNL creator Lorne Michaels. She moved to New York, and two decades later, Pell was the show’s head writer. She says she’s still baffled by her charmed life. Pell calls herself “Nanny SNL,” because of her lengthy tenure on the show, but she says having a good night at SNL makes you feel 20 again. Mandy, Graham and Rajasri take the show back to its roots (Mandy's apartment) with superskinny and incredibly famous comedian, musician, and creator Fred Armisen. Do you think Portlandia makes fun of things? Listen to find out how you are wrong. RiotCast.com
Ringing in with Episode 35, Succotash is beginning to feel like a show (to me, anyway), even if our format keeps sliding around a bit. Maybe that's the nature of this beast. This epi is a real hybrid - half clips, half interview - and it's also the "lots of background noise" episode. I put it together while vacationing in Honolulu and my tracks as festooned with the lapping surf of the Pacific Ocean right outside the window. Coupled with the coffee house environment that special guest Sammy Wegent and I have going on in the background of our interview, I have no right to take anyone down for audio roughage in their clips - this episode, anyway. Sammy is the brains behind Everybody's A Comedian, the web series that is currently "airing" its sixth and final episode on YouTube this week. He's a fascinating guy who I first met when we were brought together a few years ago to put together an improv training program at the San Francisco Comedy College. Actor, stand-up, improvisor, writer...Sammy is a multi-threat talent and he pulled everything together to create the first season of EAC. The series is roughly based on his own life in San Francisco as a struggling stand-up comedian. Featuring Samy in the lead role, the episodes also show off a number of comedy faces familiar to San Francisco audiences - Kevin Avery, Bob Brindley, Joe Tobin, Allison Page, Yuri Baranovsky, Sal Calanni...and yours truly. (Check out Episode 2...) In our interview, Sammy gets into the background that led him down the paths of acting and comedy, as well as how he found his way to San Francisco. Once he hit the City By The Bay, the seeds for EAC began planting themselves and he talk about how they coalesced into the semi-fictional series that concludes this week. As far as this episode's clips go, here's the rundown: Here's The ThingAlec Baldwin kicked off his own podcast last year and, as you might imagine, he can probably pretty much have whomever he wants as a guest. I’m actually reviewing this episode, in which Alec talks to SNL and Portlandia’s Fred Armisen, on This Week In Comedy Podcasts over on Splitsider.com this week, so be sure to check that out. In our clip, Armisen talks about the transition point he went through from drummer to comedian. Get Into CharacterBlasting out of Grand Rapids and hosted by Tommy and Chubby, I don’t know too much more about these guys, but they’re 22 episodes in and taking this podcast thing seriously. And if Angus Doodle, from the Royal & Doodle podcast likes ‘em, that’s good enough for me! Soda Pop TalkSoda Pop Talk with Dan and Nolan just started popping up on my radar the past few months when I started seeing their tweets. They sent in the clip and this blurb about their show: We are just two normal guys with much to say about nothing...and anything. Sometimes we go over the line only to realize that there's still further to go. Soda Pop Talk is a show that is about variety - not just soda pop. Able to span current topics to drunken antics of family to UFOs to fecal matter to meaning of life philosophical debates...okay, not so much the latter, but you get the idea. The Half ScoopHere's a "new to me" podcast, this time from Down Under, joining Australian podcasts The DHead Factor and The Rigid Fist as those being featuring on Succotash. Featuring co-hosts Bryce McKeon, Corben Mitchell, and Stephen Denham, each week they sit down and talk about anything and everything including time travel, films and Batman. Way Too Hip LyonHart and Labrat go live every Monday from 7 to 9 PM, East Coast time, then you can catch WTH as a podcast the rest of the week. We haven't checked in with them for a while, so the clip they sent us is a glimpse in a recent screwed-up evening in the life of the hapless Labrat. Burst O' DurstWe sign off as per usual with comedian Will Durst reporting in, this episode in the aftermath of the Democratic National Convention. Don't forget to follow Will on Twitter @WillDurst! Last item this week: I wanted to mention a fond and regretful adieu to The Gee & Jay Show as well as The Pissed Off Man Show, both out Belfast, Ireland, and both mostly out of the mind of Gavin Maxwell. He and Jay have been plugging along in the largely thankless podcast world for a couple of years and they've had enough.. Their shows were breaths of fresh Irish air in a world of soundalike "shootin' the shit" style shows but, for now, they've shut down operations. Gavin sounds off on his blog about the reasons why he's tossing in the towel, so click on the link and give it a read. (Good luck, boys! Come on back anytime!) UPDATE: Happened to be up late tonight and saw Gavin's tweet that there was an additional Pissed Off Man show that suddenly posted on SoundCloud...it seems if he can find the will (aka money), he'll find a way to keep going. Check it out. There's Epi35 in a nutshell for you. If you'd like to write me, that's at Marc@SuccotashShow.com and, if you're a comedy podcaster and want to submit a clip, we like 3 to 5 minute ones in MP3 format, which can be sent along to clips@SuccotashShow.com. Until next time, please pass the Succotash! — Marc Hershon
This week, Alec talks with Fred Armisen. Armisen has been a punk rock drummer, currently he's a cast member on Saturday Night Live and is also the co-creator and co-star of IFC's Portlandia. Armisen has always been ambitious; when he was a drummer, he recalls, he always "wanted much more." Long ago, Armisen played drums with the Blue Man Group in Chicago and he tells Alec he learned a lot: about "simplicity," "reinvention" and "that audiences want to be entertained." Armisen admits that he's always working; when SNL is on hiatus, he's producing Portlandia. But he still dreams about what might come next: "I want to invent a type of entertainment that is really blurry between comedy and something else. That doesn't have a name yet...another level of fooling people as opposed to just doing a character. Something a little bigger than that."
