How can we transform our home environments into biophilic sanctuaries that restore our bodies, help us to keep us more focused and boost our immune system? If you're interested in designing a better environment for your life and wellbeing listen to this week's guest Nina Rowland Interior Designer and co-creator of The Water Shed, whose home and eco-retreat they created, was featured on Grand Designs TV show and went viral on Cool Stays with over 7 million views. Nina shows us how to design our lives and our environment so that we may reconnect with our nature and the world around us. With a natural swimming pool and biophilic design it is a place to restore, reconnect and rejuvenate. It is proven that spending time in nature lowers the heart rate and blood pressure, it reduces the production of cortisol, the stress hormone and it actually improves the immune system. Biophilic Design applies this connection with nature into an architectural and interior design context. By integrating elements such as light, plants, water and earthy materials into built environments, it enhances well-being, health and productivity. We are running a retreat together at The Water Shed on June 16th https://louhamiltonart.com/creative-transformation-retreats/Join Lou on LinkedinFollow her @brave_newgirl on Instagram PS. In today's episode, we discuss her new book and the process for getting there, including the role of feedback, editing, and an editorial board as inputs to iteration and improvement. Questions, Notes, and Highlights: Tell us the story behind the book? Why this book? Why this format? Sketching and drawing during the pandemic? Why illustrate each chapter? Asking people — “What have you figured out?” (PDSA) vs. “what do you know?” Who is the book written for? Lean leadership or just good “leadership” influenced by C.I.?? Do some people have trouble picturing themselves a leader? “The word leader can mean many things” — tell us more about that – how can everybody be a leader? Author talk: Writing and Editing process – PDSA cycles? (Plan, Do, Study, Adjust) Iterating, asking for honest feedback? “The curse of knowledge?” Iterating on the cover design? “Heading off the head scratchers” — acronyms “Perfecting Rework” — you invited me to contribute a “wisdom of the crowd” story here… W. Edwards Deming's – American way of making toast…

Vast Grimm | RPG Actual Play with co-designer, Brian Colin Vast Grimm is a stand-alone, art-filled, punk-fueled OSR role-playing game about the few humans remaining in a universe being consumed by growing parasitic würms. Spirit of 608: Fashion, Entrepreneurship, Sustainability + Tech
Our lives are not lived in linear paths. The zigs and the zags are often what allows the most magical, unexpected and impactful moments to bubble up and become a reality. Such is the case with this week's guest, Danielle Salinas, co-founder of popular sustainable fashion brand Maison de Papillon and, most recently, New York-based retail store and — as you'll hear — a whole lot more: Project Gaia. Starting out in advertising and moving on to build a thriving dental practice with her then-husband, Danielle eventually followed her instincts toward her true calling and landed at Parson's School of Design. That's where she met co-founder Shriya Mistra. The two launched Maison de Papillon in 2013 and have become known for elevated, luxurious basics that fit in just as well during a day of meetings as they might lazing around with an afternoon tea. During the pandemic, Project Gaia became the co-founders' somewhat unlikely bet on the power of retail during an unprecedented time. More than just a store, the Manhattan space is evolving into an incubator and accelerator for the next generation of sustainable and ethical brands. Listen in for Danielle's story, get inspired by how she lives her life and runs her businesses on her own terms and learn why taking the unexpected route to open a retail space at a time when so many businesses were closing was ultimately the right move. Learn more below: Meet Danielle: Danielle Salinas is the Co-Founder and Co-Designer of Maison de Papillon, a luxury ready-to-wear clothing brand for women. Maison de Papillon's collection of elevated essentials is designed for the modern woman who desires chicness without sacrificing ease and versatility. Raised in South Texas, Danielle's career path was certainly unconventional. Her strong entrepreneurial spirit motivated her from a young, single mother of humble beginnings and served as the catalyst for her first career step into the world of advertising. As she launched herself into this industry, she found her passion for business in working with entrepreneurs. Soon, she gained the confidence that allowed her to build a successful dental practice with her then-husband. As a woman on-the-go who craves simplicity and ease, Danielle noticed a void in the loungewear, ready-to-wear segment of the fashion industry. Ambitiously, she applied to Parson School of Design where Danielle met her now business partner Shriya Misra. Sharing a passion for luxury and versatility, these two women created Maison De Papillon. Today, you can find Maison de Papillon in over 200 of the best hotels and luxury boutiques in the world. You can learn more about Danielle and her company at www.maisondepapillon.com.

This is a special interview-only episode. I’m very happy to announce that my special guest for this show is Don French, co-designer of the TRS-80 Model I computer and long-time Tandy employee. Don has a long and storied history with Tandy. The TRS-80 Model I, the machine that saved Tandy and spawned a long line of historically significant computers, was his brainchild. He worked closely with Steve Leininger to develop the Model I. In addition, you’ll hear that he worked with Bill Gates, Paul Allen and many other giants of the microcomputer industry. I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I enjoyed talking with Don. Links “Priming the Pump: How TRS-80 Enthusiasts Helped Spark the PC Revolution” by Welsh, Theresa; Welsh, David (2011-02-23). SummaryCraig Kanarick was one of the people responsible for the first ever banner ad, which appeared on Oct. 27, 1994 on Hotwired.com. As mentioned in the podcast, there’s no “first” ad, as several were launched in a rotation at the same time. But as mentioned on the podcast, a lot of people like to think of the first ad as this one, for AT&T, which you can see here:And for more information about the “You Will” AT&T campaign, read about it here, or dig this.Craig went on to found Razorfish, along with his childhood friend Jeff Dachis. Razorfish was a pioneering design, technology and advertising studio that brought many large brands and corporations onto the web for the first time. Razorfish was also a pioneer of the web-tech scene in New York City, which has come to be called “Silicon Alley.” Craig is currently the founder of Mouth.com, headquartered in the DUMBO neighborhood in Brooklyn, as is this podcast (thus, the DUMBO-ish picture I chose above). In our conversation, I mention some contentious media coverage that Razorfish received back in the day, in my opinion, painting them as poster-boys for dotcom-era excess. I offer some of those articles for context:New York MagazineWired60 Minutes II See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
