On this week's podcast, we cover the episodes of Coronation Street shown on the 10th and the 12th June (Episodes #11,287 - 11,290). Only a couple of Corries to chat about this week, and not too many big developments to discuss either, we thought, so a relatively short podcast to balance out the bumper eps from the past few weeks! We'd all seen it coming a mile off, but this week, Toyah and Nick finally kissed - was it just a one-off, or will this blossom into something bigger? We've certainly got our own views where that's concerned! Also this week, Summer's back from Boston, and she's not alone - but is Felix just a bit too much of a geek even for her? Meanwhile, Abi's pleased to hear that Corey's documentary has been taken down, Glenda and George are still at loggerheads (despite Debbie's best efforts...) and Ken has a bit of a tumble - but will he accept his family's support? Up next on the podcast it's The Kabin, where we finally have a name and release month for Charlie Lawson's autobiography, and we finish things off with a bit of feedback. It is a pleasure to welcome singer-songwriter Finlay Morton to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Born in Aberdeen, Scotland, Finlay taught himself to play his older brother's Epiphone guitar at 10. His influences vary from blues musician Sonny Terry and Scottish folk act The Corries to classic rockers Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, and Neil Young. At 18, he packed up his guitar and moved to London to play in a band. While he played in various band, he worked as 10 Downing Street as its official sound engineer. From 1990 to 2007, Finlay Morton served four British Prime Ministers. He was present when a teary Margaret Thatcher left 10 Downing Street for the last time. He was ‘Tony Blair's Roadie' and was feet away when the former Prime Minister met former US President George W. Bush, former Russian President Boris Yeltsin, and the infamous Muammar Gaddafi. He also advised former Prime Minster Gordon Brown on his first day in office to never forget when he is wearing a microphone, advice that the former British Prime Minister seemingly forgot. In 2004, Finlay had a chance meeting with Moody Blues and Status Quo producer Pip Williams, which resulted in his first self-penned album Interpret This, which was released in 2006. Two singles went to radio with resulting airplay on regional radio stations throughout the United Kingdom along with a successful acoustic tour with guitarist Greg Bone. In 2008, Finlay started working on his second album, Back to Basics, at West London's Wendyhouse Studios. During the mixing process, he suffered a heart attack. Thanks to speedy medical attention, he went back to work only in a few days. His first single, “Scary Monsters,” was released later that year with more radio support. Legendary Los Angeles-based producer John Ryan updated Finlay's masters and the album was re-released as Back to Basics 2009. “The Devil Ain't Getting My Soul,” the album's first single, garnered both US and UK airplay. In addition to his passion for music, Finlay is a co-founder of London internet radio station Soho Radio, which is now, after five years, firmly established. Soho Radio won Mixcloud's “Best Internet Station in the World.” In 2019, Soho Radio also launched in New York City.In this edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Finlay Morton spoke about his experience working at 10 Downing Street and his song: “Move Mountains.”

W 1934 roku Josephine Beirne i George Sweatman nagrali piosenkę pod tytułem „My Bonnie Irish Lass”. A pod tytułem „Red is The Rose", w latach 60, piosenkę spopularyzował Tommy Makem. Tym razem nie ma drugiego dna, „Red is The Rose” jest o miłości, z tym że nie do końca szczęśliwej. W ostatniej zwrotce młody chłopak ubolewa, że musi rozstać się z ukochaną, gdyż cała jej rodzina wyjeżdża z Irlandii. Taki los… Sail Ho, Audycja zawiera utwory: „Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond”, w wykonaniu Elli Roberts; słowa muzyka tradycyjne „Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond”, w wykonaniu The Corries; słowa muzyka tradycyjne „Red is The Rose” w wykonaniu Liama Clancy'ego; słowa muzyka tradycyjne.

Jakobici - szkoccy i angielscy zwolennicy legitymistycznych pretendentów do tronu z dynastii Stuartów, potomków króla Szkocji Jakuba VII (w Anglii panującego jako Jakub II). W okolicach 1791 roku wielki szkocki poeta Robert Burns przepisał tekst i stworzył pieśń bardziej uniwersalną, w dalszym ciągu jednak antyjakobicką. Tekst Burnsa pozostał prawie niezmieniony do dzisiaj. Tytuł to „Ye Jacobites by Name” – prawda, że znacie? Śpiewa dla nas banjoista folkowy i jazzowy Alastair McDonald. Posłuchajcie Pierwsze powstanie zwolennicy Jakuba urządzili pod dowództwem Johna Grahama w 1689 roku. Wicehrabia Dundee zebrał w Irlandii 200 osobowy oddział, wykonał desant w Kintyre, dobrał ochotników wśród klanów góralskich i z furią ruszył na armię czerwonych kurtek. W 1708 Jakub Stuart, zebrał w 1708 roku we Francji 6 tys. żołnierzy i wyruszył z Dunkierki ku Anglii. I nie dopłynął, w kanale zatrzymała go Royal Navy. Dwie kolejne próby wzniecenia powstania w 1719 z pomocą Hiszpanów i w 1744 z pomocą Francuzów zniweczyły sztormy, które zatopiły całkiem liczne floty w Kanale. Karol musiał opuścić Wyspy, odpłynął do Francji. Fragmenty zebrał i opatrzył muzyką Donal Liathain (Lijan). Powstała piękna pieśń Ma Ghile Mear (mój wielki bohater), słuchamy jej w wykonaniu nie byle kogo – śpiewa sam Sting z towarzyszeniem zespołu The Chieftains. A o samej ucieczce księcia Karola opowiada nasza ostatnia pieśń. Bardzo popularna w Szkocji i nie tylko. Weszła do kanonu pieślni ludowych, często śpiewana jako kołysanka. Miłośn Outlander znacie ją z czołówki. Miłośnicy serialu „Outlander”, znają ją z czołówki, to „The Sky boat song”. Dziś śpiewa ją dla nas zespół The Corries. Audycja zawiera utwory: " Ye Jacobites by Name ", w wykonaniu Alastair McDonald, słowa: Robert Burns, muzyka: tradycyjna; " Ma Ghile Mear w wykonaniu Stinga i The Chieftains, słowa na podstaiwe Seana Maca Domhnaila muzyka: Donal Liathain; " The Sky boat song ", w wykonaniu The Corries, słowa: Sir Harold Boulton, i muzyka: Anne Campbelle MacLeod

On this week's podcast, we chat about the episodes of Coronation Street shown in the UK between the 12th and the 16th April (Episodes #10295 - 10302). There's a lot to fit in this podcast, what with last Friday's Corries being delayed, and we start off our epic Street Talk segment by chatting about Peter Barlow's various woes of the week. Whether it's discovering that he may never see his son again, having his family bicker during a meeting to find out whether he's suitable for a liver transplant or ending Friday by face planting onto the cobbles in a shower of confetti, it's fair to say that Peter's had better weeks, but hey - he managed to fit in his sixth wedding too, so it could be worse. Also having a rough time this week is poor Cathy, who takes a cue from Leanne and goes into hiding to get away from her online tormentors - let's just hope for Leanne's sake she's done a better job of keeping her hideout from Harvey a bit of a better secret. Meanwhile, Tyrone's behaviour leaves us fuming, George's attempt at the old 'give your date a bunch of flowers swiped from a dead person' trick fails spectacularly, and James does a #ClassicCorrieFakeout on Michael - though someone should probably tell him it's best suited for driving tests and GCSE results than potentially life-altering paternity test news.. In The Kabin segment, we're chuffed to hear Ali Mardell's engagement news and baffled by the mere concept of Corrie reportedly working alongside 16-year-old TikTok stars in their latest attempt to get down with the kidz, then we round the show off with more of your listener feedback. The comical history of Rosin the Bow. My failure as a podcaster. What on Middle-earth is a “smial”? A Doctor Whovian Spotlight on Matt Hughes. Welcome to the Pub Songs Podcast, the Virtual Public House for Celtic Geek culture. I am your Guide. My name is Marc Gunn. Today’s show is brought to you by my Gunn Runners on Patreon. Subscribe to the podcast and download free music when you sign up at PubSong.com. WHO'S PLAYING IN THE PUB TODAY 00:27 - SONG: “Rosin the Bow” from Happy Songs of Death What does “Rosin the Bow” mean? Rosin is a solid form of resin that's obtained from pines and other conifers. ... Used by cellists, violinists, and other string musicians, rosin helps create friction between the bow hair and strings. Essentially, rosin helps the bow grip the strings and produce sound. That’s from The Vault at Music & The Arts. The song was popularized in America in the 19th century. Though it probably had British or Irish origins according to Wikipedia. The most interesting fact was that the music for the song was used by several US presidential campaigns, including for William Henry Harrison ("The Hero of Tippecanoe"),[3] Henry Clay ("Harry, the Honest and True") and Abraham Lincoln ("Lincoln and Liberty"). 3:02 - WELCOME -- Post a review in Apple Podcasts. Get Celtic Christmas music. -- Browncoat Christmas is now online. Mikey Mason and I released this four song EP of Christmas songs inspired by Joss Whedon’s TV show, Firefly. It’s upbeat and fun. You can download or stream it most everywhere online. -- Short Story of what’s new: My failure as a podcaster. - CD SPONSOR: SCOTTISH SONGS OF DRINKING & REBELLION Hi. I’m Marc Gunn. You may remember me from such kilted bands as the Brobdingnagian Bards, Kilted Kings, and Marc Gunn. Ye know. Me. But perhaps, you don’t know my music. But you may know some fine Scottish Songs of Drinking & Rebellion. That may be a rip off title from a Clancy Brothers album, Irish Songs of Drinking & Rebellion. But the music is pure Scottish fun. You’ll get 17 Scottish songs that will make you want to drink or rise up against England. You’ll hear songs I learned from Ed Miller, The Corries, Widening Gyre (you probably have never heard of that band), and even Outlander… Well, sort of. There are five songs by Robert Burns, including “MacPherson’s Farewell”, “Scots Wha Hae”, “Ye Jacobites by Name”, “A Man’s A Man for A’ That”, and the clean love song version of “Green Grow the Rashes”. There’s the unofficial national anthem of Scotland, “Flower of Scotland”, by The Corries. The “Skye Boat Song” was a fantastic traditional Scottish song even before the lyrics were modified for the Outlander TV show. There’s the great drinking ballad, “Jock Stuart”. And let’s not forget Hugh S. Roberton’s incredible “Mingulay Boat Song” that is given a Louisiana gospel edge. You’ll find it all on Marc Gunn’s Scottish Songs of Drinking & Rebellion. Get it at CelticMusic.org. Now let’s go geek with a song that’s not from that CD... 9:09 - GEEK SONG: “The Smial or the Tree” from Sci Fi Drinking Songs "In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole and that means comfort." - The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien What on Middle-earth is a “smial”? Well the Tolkien Gateway has the answer. “Smials were the hobbit-holes tunneled into earth mounds and hills. For generations the Hobbits dug into the earth to live. By the later Third Age the poorest Hobbits still went on living in burrows of the most primitive kind with only one window or none. For the most well-to-do hobbits, smials were luxurious versions of those primitive diggings of old. Their tunnels had rounded walls and branched to other rooms. Smials included Bag End and the smials along Bagshot Row of Hobbiton, the Great Smials of Tuckborough and Brandy Hall. The latter two were large enough to have ample room for a hundred Hobbits. When suitable sites for these large and ramifying tunnels were not everywhere to be found, many Hobbits lived in wood, brick or stone houses. This was the case with some muddy regions of the Eastfarthing, such as the Marish. "Smial" is a term used by Tolkien fans to refer to divisions of Tolkien Societies. Read more about it at http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Smials 11:25 - CELTIC GEEK SPOTLIGHT: Matt Hughes I've seen Matt Hughes' name for about as long as I can remember. He was an integral part of the Brobdingnagian Bards' community early on. Which is where I first found him. He was also one of the first people to cover a song I wrote. So you know that's gonna make me happy. Hehe He also helped me write “Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster” and performed on “Scouring the Shire” and “Bilbo’s Farewell” (he yelled ‘Proudfeet’) on my CD Don’t Go Drinking With Hobbits. When I asked Matt about being a guest in the Celtic Geek Spotlight, he made some silly reference to the Weeping Angels from Doctor Who. That gave me the idea to have Matt answer all of my questions… without blinking. As soon as he does that, we will be forced to move to a different time period with a new question. Welcome Matt, can you tell me what inspires you with music? Why are you still making music today? What do you have planned for the future? Oh and do it all without blinking… MATT RESPONDS Whoa. Cindy and Craig Corrie are the parents of human rights activist and observer Rachel Corrie who in 2003 was killed by an Israeli military operated Caterpillar D9R bulldozer in the Gaza Strip, as she tried to prevent the demolition of a Palestinian family’s home. Motivated by their daughter's work and example, the Corries have dedicated themselves to the pursuit of peace with justice in the Middle East and have made many visits to the region, including five to the Gaza Strip. In 2012 and 2016, Cindy Corrie co-led Interfaith Peace-Builder delegations to Israel, the West Bank and Gaza. In pursuit of accountability in Rachel Corrie’s case and rights for Palestinians, the Corrie family has for years advocated in the U.S. at both state and national levels of government, and has sought justice through court systems in this country and in Israel. The Corries reside in Olympia, Washington, where they support the work of the Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice. In December 2010, the foundation was recognized for “outstanding service for Human Rights-Unique Achievement” by the Thurston County Diversity Council. The Corries are recipients of a Human Rights Advocates of the Year Award from Seattle University’s Human Rights Network and a Pillar of Peace Award from the Pacific Northwest Region of the American Friends Service Committee. In October 2012, they accepted the LennonOno Grant for Peace on behalf of their daughter Rachel.

We stick with the land and the new twists in the fight of tenant farmers Alison and David Telfer of Cleuchfoot farm to stop Buccleuch estates removing them to make way for planting trees. As deadlines on Brexit loom ever nearer the BBC has suddenly shown an interest in what the Irish government's position on the Irish backstop is. Neale Richmond, who Lesley spoke to last week, and Irish Deputy Prime Minister Simon Coveney have both made impressive appearances in the past couple of days in the face of "interesting" questioning, in particular from John Humphrys. The murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi has turned the spotlight on Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman and the humanitarian disaster in the Yemen. Will his brutal death prove a turning point in the West's relationship with Saudi Arabia? In 1746 a young woman, Flora MacDonald, sailed over the sea to Skye with her Irish "maid", Betty Burke. The "maid" was actually Prince Charles Edward Stuart, a fugitive from the forces of King George II who were hunting him following his escape after the disastrous Battle of Culloden. The grandson of James II of England, Prince Charles Edward Stuart, or Bonnie Prince Charlie as he was known in Scotland, had led the second Jacobite Uprising of 1745 to overthrow King George, where his army of Jacobites was slaughtered and he was forced to flee for his life. This was where Flora came into the picture. Like Outlander? Maybe you'll like this. For many hearing The Skye Boat Song brings back a wealth of childhood memories, as the words "Speed Bonnie Boat Like a Bird on the Wing" tell the story of the escape of Bonnie Prince Charlie, dressed as a maid to the Isle of Skye, after this defeat at the battle of Culloden. Originally written by Sir Harold Boulton and Anne MacLeod back in the 1870's, we explore the beauty of this song and how it continues to touch people's lives across the world in very different ways. Contributors in this programme include: The Queen's Piper, who has played this tune in happy and sad times, recalls playing it outside the Queen's window and leading Princess Margaret's cortege. A New Zealand artist shares his memories of time spent with his father, and the sound of him whistling the song on their way home as dusk fell. A sailor from the Isle of Skye, describes his connection with the spirituality of piece and the Loch on which he sails. Acclaimed violinist Tasmin Little shares her own arrangement of the piece and explains why it works so well musically. An Australian mum, tells how important this song has been in connecting with the two girls she has adopted from China. Gaelic Singer Maggie MacInnes tells the history of the piece. The programme includes music by Julian Lloyd Webber, The Corries and Pete Lashley. Producer - Rachel Matthews.

Video: Vimeo - YouTube Photos: Flickr Audio: download links below This Toad Session is something a little different, in that instead of setting up a studio environment in the house, we actually just recorded the songs at a house gig.  The gig was in fact also the band's first live appearance in four or five years.  So the whole atmosphere of the session is massively different to the usual ones we record. The interview took place all at once before the gig, rather than in and around the songs like it usually does, and for the podcast I have just spliced bits of it into the podcast as and when it seemed suitable. We also webcast this live, which was kind of fun.  I am not sure how brilliant the image and sound were for everyone, but it was an extremely fun thing to do and something we'll be looking to do more of in the new year I hope. It was a little tricky to ask people to take pictures in the middle of a performance, so we have a few photos by Anneli and Fiona but not very many.  As per usual we have videos of four songs, over and above the main video above.  Martin actually read some of his poetry before the gig started, so there's a little of that in the main video as well.  The session tracks are all downloadable for free below, as is the main interview podcast, with the full tracklist for that at the bottom of the page.  A large thank you to Fiona Buckle and Anneli Kuukka for their pictures, to Neil Pennycook for recording and mixing the songs and to Ben Clarke for helping with the filming. An old Scottish song popularized by The Corries. Over-fishing in the Greenland sea during the early 19th century had a devastating toll on the whale stocks. A new hunting ground, the South-West Fishery, was discovered in the region of the Davis Straits and it was mostly here that The Diamond fished. In 1830 The Diamond, Eliza Swan and The Resolution along with seventeen other whaling ships were caught in the ice of Melville Bay. The ships were lost and many sailors lost their lives.
